After years away from the box office, the Hollywood kid — daughter of the late Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, a Brangelina of their days — is back on top.

“Halloween” made $33.3 million last night, a whopping amount heading to an $80 million or more weekend. Jamie Lee starred in the first “Halloween” what seems like one hundred fifty years ago — actually 1978. Back then, “Halloween” made a total of $47 million, which was HUGE for its time.

The other immediate news is that Annapurna Pictures for some reason added around a thousand theaters to the release of “The Sisters Brothers.” That was a mistake. You can’t blow lots of air into a flat tire unless it’s been repaired first. Annapurna is leaking. They made only $230,000 last night in over 1,000 theaters. The brothers could not find any more relatives. But now they have to pay theaters. This is worrying for their next two releases, “Destroyer,” and “Vice.”

“Halloween” will take the number 1 spot at the box office this weekend, with a predicted $70 million.

But “A Star is Born” crossed the $100 million mark Wednesday, after 13 days in release. It’s up to $104 million with no sign of stopping.

On top of that, the soundtrack is still number 1, on Amazon and iTunes. The album has placed 10 different spots on iTunes including “Shallow,” which holds at number 1. Not bad. Even Bradley Cooper has two hit singles!

As for Oscar buzz, I don’t see a way “Star” doesn’t swamp the categories: Best Picture, Actress, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay, and Song, just for starters.

What a good thing Bradley Cooper didn’t lose heart after “Star” almost had a false start and didn’t happen. And Lady Gaga? There aren’t enough good things to say!

Last night’s swell screening and after party at MoMA for “The Price of Everything” had a lot of revelations about the art world– and one about Woody Allen.

The HBO documentary is from Nathaniel Kahn, son of the late legendary architect Louis Kahn. It’s a fascinating look– I loved it– about the current state of the art world from prolific and successful artists like Jeff Koons to long time stealth star abstract painter Larry Poons.

Just as “The Price” begins, the scene is set at Sotheby’s for an auction of paintings from the collection of disgraced Sotheby’s chairman Alfred P. Taubman. As the camera pans the room of possible bidders, there is– unmistakably– Woody Allen himself. It’s not clear if he bought something, but he certainly had a paddle and was interested.

More than a couple of people in the MoMA theater could be heard saying, “Isn’t that Woody Allen?” (To which many replied, It can’t be.)

It was.

So what happened? Kahn told me that it is indeed Woody, who can be seen in three-quarter profile. “And turnabout is fair play,” Kahn said. “In Woody’s movie, Match Point, which was filmed in London, you can see a movie marquee clearly that was playing my film, My Architect, by my father. So, without planning, all the films are now connected.”

Coincidentally, Louis Kahn’s life was as complicated as Woody’s. He had three children, but only one with his wife, who outlived him by two years and died in 1996. Kahn’s other two children during the marriage were from other relationships. Nathaniel brought his mom, Harriet Pattison, to the premiere last night. She’s a vibrant 90, and is very proud of her Yale-educated filmmaker son.

“The Price of Everything” starts an Oscar qualifying theatrical run today at the Quad Theater (13th St. between Fifth and Sixth) before it hits HBO in November. Don’t miss it– it’s really terrific, if for nothing else how it traces Poons and George Condo each as they create their amazing art in real time.

Great news tonight from the UK: exclusive from the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye reveals that Dame Judi Dench has joined Tom Hooper’s all-star movie of “Cats,” based on the hit musical.

Dame Judi joins Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Sir Ian McKellen, and James Corden. She’ll play Old Deuteronomy, but we’ll think of her as Young, just as well!

Wow: I may actually be able to watch this movie now. They’re really sweetening the pot every day. After this, I do hope Tom Hooper gets back to drama without music. First “Les Miz,” now this.

Judi Dench makes everything better. You can’t deny it!

Melissa McCarthy gives a powerhouse and poignant, weaved in with her comedic caustic wit performance in “Can You Ever Forgive Me.”  Not only do we fall in tortured love with failing writer Lee Israel, but we also admire her and respect her for her honest to a fault and ‘calling it like it is’ manner.  

Set in 1991 in NYC, which director Marielle Heller captures perfectly, “Can You Ever Forgive Me,” is based on Lee Israel’s memoir of the same name.  The script is wonderfully written by Nicole Holofecener and Jeff Whitty.  The film opens with a demoralized Lee struggling to pay her bills, with her beloved cat Jersey being sick.  She spends a lot of time at her favorite watering hole, Julius, a legendary gay bar that is still around in the East Village.

Lee meets the charming; sly and messed up Jack Hock, played perfectly by Richard. E. Grant; the damaged duo quickly become fast friends. Even though she’s had one of her noted biographies on the New York Times Best-Seller list, her exasperated agent Marjorie, played perfectly by Jane Curtin, can’t find a publisher for her latest book a biography of Fanny Brice, the vaudeville comedienne, a labor of love for Lee.

While she’s  doing research in a library, Lee comes across a personal letter that was left between the pages of a book, and realizing it’s worth something, she sells it to a love/fan struck woman who runs a bookshop, played beautifully by Dolly Wells. And then it’s off to the races for Lee.  Realizing that her talents as a writer can make her money forging personal letters from notable figures, like Dorothy Parker and Noel Coward, she goes with it until it invariably goes wrong.  By then she recruited Jack as her partner in crime, ultimately leading to the FBI involvement.  They get caught red handed.

McCarthy and Grant are both simply stunning. Heller, with an expert sense of pacing, makes a dynamic film that captures the mood of New York in every choice she makes.  Melissa McCarthy shows all sides of Lee; wounded, vulnerable, funny, smart, kind, all of it.  She knocks it out of the park.  No doubt she and Grant along with the filmmakers will be recognized mightily during the awards season.

Fox Searchlight’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me” opens in limited release today.
