Oprah’s OWN: What Happened to Kirstie Alley, Eckhart Tolle?

Oprah Winfrey has launched her OWN Network and even announced a new show, with financial advisor Suze Orman, for later this year.

But what happened to her 2008 deal with Kirstie Alley?

And where is Eckhart Tolle? Two years ago Oprah turned over her almost all her resources to the jabbering new age bestselling author of gobbledy-gook. She even ran internet seminars via Skype with Tolle where she gushed over him like he was a saint.

At the TCA’s yesterday in Pasadena, our Randee Dawn got to ask OWN’s Christina Norman about these Oprah favorites. Norman denied that there have ever been deals with either Alley or Tolle, or even former CBS Distribution guru and onetime Harpo worker Terry Wood — that he would be coming to the network.

Here’s Randee’s report on the OWN presentation:

It was a strange mix of slate presentation – Norman introduced three
of the net’s new series before the Queen of All Media took the stage
solo – and drinking of the Kool-Aid. Permutations of being your “best
possible self” emerged from everyone, from Gayle King (who will bring
The Gayle King Show to the network as a live, five-day-a-week gabfest)
to the ten finalists on the Mark Burnett-produced Your OWN Show, which will give a six-episode series guarantee to the winner, selected from thousands of amateurs and semi-pros around the country.

Even Burnett is in on it: When asked why he’d contribute his time and
reputation to an untested network, he said, “If Oprah had asked me to
ride a unicycle naked backwards at night, I’d have said where and when.”

It’s fortunate that Oprah and her minions at least intend to do good –
but it’s also a little spooky at times; the Republicans and Fox News
have nothing on her people for pushing talking points.

At last Oprah took the stage, dressed casually in various hues of
purple, taking a seat in a comfy white chair. (Meanwhile, as she
talked for the next three-quarters of an hour, Norman stood
continuously nearby, really wanting to pee and considering taking a seat on the edge of the stage – as she noted later.)
She fed off of
the audience’s energy and despite the potential hostility of the crowd
managed to catch a lot of softball questions, spending at least 15
minutes answering what her dreams and hopes have been.

She’s creating “mindful television” which can be on all day in your
home and never give you a reason to stay up at night. There’s
something to be said for all this positivism: “The intention of this
channel is to bring good energy, no matter what the programming is”
and “ratings … aren’t as important to me now as they might be to
[experts].”

On the other hand, there’s a fine line between positivism,
treacle and pabulum: Without a little frisson, we all go dead inside.
But maybe that’s just the cynical New Yorker in me.

In the end, not a lot got said but a lot of good feelings were shared.
And in the end, Oprah left the stage while Norman – who later denied
that any deals were in the works with rumored names like Kirstie Alley
and Eckhart Tolle, or that – got a chance
to use the facilities.

While Gervais answered a question, Pilkington’s ear bud came off inside his ear and hilarity ensued: “There’s your science, for Chrissakes,” said Gervais, responding to the dubious queries about the series’ scientific qualifications. “This was my gift to the world,” he said about sending the gullible and somewhat naïf-like Pilkington off on his own, adding: “He’s the most fascinating thing on the planet.”

Megan Mullally: How She Turned Down Stephen Sondheim

Randee Dawn is reporting for us from the Television Critics’ panels in Pasadena:

Sure, Megan Mullally has a terrific (if ensemble) role the Web-to-cable series “Children’s Hospital.”

But that 15-minute-per-episode series doesn’t even begin to give the two-time Emmy winner enough room in the spotlight. Mullally, who (who last appeared on Broadway from 2007-09 in “Young Frankenstein”) says she’d love to get on the Great White Way again “down the road.”

But her husband Nick Offerman is getting big cheers these days on “Parks & Recreation,” so the couple must remain based out of L.A. full-time.

“We met in a play in L.A.,” said Mullally, “so we’re always looking for more chances to get on stage again.”

Not that offers aren’t coming in: Mullally said she was considering a role as Sally in Trevor Nunn’s new London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Follies” but “it would have meant eight months out of the country” and she didn’t want to be away from her aging mother that long.

That said, there’s some potential LA-based big news for the “Will & Grace” star: Her next long-awaited starring role in a sitcom. “There’s something in development,” she teased, but wouldn’t say more – or indicate a network attachment. But “W&G” did so well for NBC in the past, the home of “please make us must-see again” (and “Parks”) should be willing to give her a series shot.

Still, her heart still lies on the East Coast: “Give my regards to New York!” she called out, before disappearing for yet more “Hospital” press interviews

Beatles in ITunes Deal that “Apple doesn’t want anyone to know about”

The Beatles’ deal with ITunes? Well, it diminishes their ailing record label, EMI.

In a most unusual deal that ITunes and Apple don’t want anyone to know about, the Beatles and their music publisher are being paid directly by the downloading service.

What does this mean? It means that EMI’s Roger Faxon, who made a big deal out of finally getting the Beatles connected to ITunes, made a concession unlike any other.

I’ve confirmed it independently, however.

What happens normally is that the record label–EMI in this case–cuts the deal with ITunes. Then they receive payments, or royalties, and distribute them to the artist and the music publisher. In a normal deal, EMI would be receiving money from ITunes on Beatles downloads, then sending them to Sony/ATV Music and to the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps (separate from ITunes’ Apple).

However, in this deal, EMI is the last to get paid. They have to wait for the Beatles to receive their money from ITunes. Then Apple Corps pays EMI. ITunes is also paying Sony/ATV directly all its music publishing royalties.

By doing it this way, the Beatles are likely receiving a higher royalty than if EMI were paying them. And so far the Beatles have sold hundreds of thousands of downloads on ITunes since they announced the deal a month ago. Still on the ITunes bestsellers chart are “Abbey Road,” “Sgt. Pepper,” the White Album, the red and blue greatest hits albums, and the Beatles box set.

ITunes/Apple, says my source, does not want this story getting out. “They don’t want to have to negotiate individually with every artist. This could be precedent setting.”

It’s also precedent setting for EMI, which is in dire financial shape and doesn’t have much leverage with anyone. There’s now speculation that EMI’s deal with Pink Floyd might be similar. Pink Floyd sued EMI and won over allowing downloads of their concept albums like “Dark Side of the Moon” in pieces. Now that Pink Floyd has finally re-signed their catalog to EMI, sources say that soon we won’t be able to download individual tracks from those albums. It’s unclear how ITunes will pay Pink Floyd–through EMI or their own company.

Camille Grammer Off “Housewives”: Most Likely Part of $50 Million Divorce

Even Anderson Cooper is outraged: Camille Grammer is leaving “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” at the conclusion of this “season.”

No one can guess why? But it’s pretty obvious: Kelsey Grammer wanted her off that show.

Let’s rewind to last spring, and the Broadway opening of “La Cage Aux Folles.” Before the curtain went up, Camille and the “Housewives” camera crew invaded the Longacre Theater. For the first time ever, a crew was shooting in the orchestra section seating and the show hadn’t even begun! It was Bravo, and they were filming Camille and her plasticized cohorts from “Housewives.” It was tacky and unprecedented. Kelsey was not happy.

As recently as a few weeks ago I ran into Kelsey and his succeeding wife/girlfriend Kayte. We talked about the whole “Housewives” incident, as well as that same camera crew filming him at the “La Cage” opening night party. He had not been pleased.

Just before Christmas, Camille Grammer had according to reports rejected a $30 million divorce settlement. She felt she was owed $50 million for 13 years of marriage, no prepnup, and her share of Kelsey’s “Frasier” career. Now it seems like a deal may have been reached over the holidays. But part of that divorce agreement, no doubt, is a clause that gets Kelsey’s ex wife off the air. The Emmy winner has lots of projects in the future, including an offer to be in Sarah Jessica Parker‘s new movie. He doesn’t need ghosts of marriages past haunting him on TV. Camille will have to be satisfied with the 50 mil, and — as depicted in the already seen episodes–four nannies for two children.

Gwyneth Paltrow Reinvents Herself: From Oscar Ice Queen to Rock Star

A lot of actors and celebrities get stuck in public roles and wish they could reinvent themselves. Some have done it, but it’s a rarity.

No one could have expected Gwyneth Paltrow, 1999 Best Actress winner of the Academy Award for “Shakespeare in Love,” to pull something like this off. Known for that movie, for marrying Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and being a fashion icon, Paltrow had drifted as an actress. So many disappointing films followed “Shakespeare,” from “Bounce” to “Possession” and “A Year at the Top.”

It did seem like Paltrow’s acting career was on the verge of tanking. Granted, she was in both “Iron Man” movies. But for an actress who was supposed to be the second coming of Meryl Streep, something had gone wrong.

But then, bingo! Paltrow had sung very well with Huey Lewis in a film directed by her late father, Bruce Paltrow, called “Duet.” She and Lewis even had a hit covering Smokey Robinson’s “Cruising.”

A few years ago, at a benefit for Paul Newman‘s Blue Light Theater Group, Gwyneth sang with powerhouse Phoebe Snow and bowled over the audience. She obviously knew something we didn’t.

Now, as she promotes her new movie, “Country Strong,” Paltrow is suddenly hot stuff for the first time in 12 years. Covering CeeLo Green‘s “Forget You” on the hit TV show  “Glee,” Paltrow became an overnight sensation.  She really can sing– she’s got a sultry R&B voice and a good sense of humor. Then this week she rapped hilariously (again) with Jimmy Fallon on his show, where she’s become  a video parody rock star. Now she’s set for “Saturday Night Live,” on which she and Green will likely do a duet on “Forget You” (known more infamously as “F– You” as Green’s hit). Their performance will be an event.

All of this may not do much for “Country Strong.” It’s not an Oscar film, and the audience knows it’s been dumped into the cold clutches of January also-rans. But for Paltrow, it’s a surprising new career. And bravo to her! It took a lot of courage to reassess and reinvent. Paltrow’s success should give her peers confidence to try it themselves.

People’s Choice Awards: America’s Dirty Little Secret

The People’s Choice Awards: they are America’s dirty little secret. Are they real? Does someone actually vote for them? Does it matter? Who are these people?

Really: you know the whole thing is a set up between publicists and studios. This is a world in which “Grown Ups” wins Best Comedy. “Twilight: Eclipse” is Best Drama. The horrific Kardashians are not only fawned over in the audience but then win some award. It’s cynicism on overload. These are the dregs of the dregs.

Why yes, Jennifer Aniston, Johnny Depp, and Adam Sandler all show up.  They have movies to plug.  What a shock! The three stars of “Twilight” are all sitting together in the front row ready to accept their award. Robert Pattinson also showed off the free phone he got in his gift bag. Well, there has to be some incentive to whore oneself out at this thing. The gift suites must have been amazing!

Queen Latifah looked nice, and I’m sure she gets a nice piece of change for the annual work. “People’s Choice” is produced by Mark Burnett, who gives us “Survivor.” The shows have a lot in common. Where is the award for Best Fast Food? Favorite mall?

I did feel bad that Warner Bros. allowed “Inception” into the mix with those other godawful movies like “Iron Man 2” and “Twilight.”  But what can you do? Anyway, it’s cold out, the garbage is piled high on the sidewalk, and five days after New Years Hollywood reminds us what it’s really all about.

Natalie Portman: Will Bad Movies Released Now Hurt Her Best Actress Chances?

The Best Actress race is starting to take on its own personality.

For one thing, Natalie Portman may be in the same position Eddie Murphy found himself in a few years ago. Murphy, considered hot for Best Supporting Actor in  “Dreamgirls,” is thought to have undone himself by releasing “Norbit” A hideous comedy, the movie kicked Murphy back several notches. Winning the Golden Globe didn’t help either. Alan Arkin won the Oscar instead for “Little Miss Sunshine.” Murphy and his entourage got up and and walked out the Oscars in the middle of the show.

Portman, so hot herself right now in “Black Swan,” has some unfortunate releases coming up as awards season unfolds. “No Strings Attached” seems to be the coarse version of “Love and Other Drugs.” Foul language and situations, juvenile behavior–Portman is wasted in a “friends with benefits” relationship with Ashton Kutcher. Oy. The Ashton Kutcher library is really getting great. Circle January 21st for this disaster.

Then there’s Portman’s straight to video “The Other Woman.” This is a little bit of everything–“Stepmom” meets “An Unmarried Woman.” Natalie breaks up a marriage, has to deal with a stepson, gets pregnant with the new husband, and then the new child dies. She and the stepkid bond. Yikes. It’s hard to say which of these two films is “Norbit” and which is “Pluto Nash.” And get this: “The Other Woman” is already on Time Warner’s video on demand.

“The Other Woman” is also Lisa Kudrow‘s 99th bad movie with Don Roos. He made one good movie, “The Opposite of Sex.” The rest have been terrible. Kudrow should have been the biggest TV star of the 2000s. She could be Mary Tyler Moore and Lucille Ball all rolled into one. She just needs a great sitcom built around her in which the other characters like her. Is it that hard to do?

Golden Globers: “Somewhere” Was Nowhere; Weinsteins Bulk Up; Writers Guild Awards Skips Some Biggies

Remember when I told you about the seven members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who had credited roles in Sofia Coppola‘s “Somewhere”? Now I’m told that the seven members recused themselves from voting on the movie when ballot time came around. “And Sofia Coppola knew that would happen,” says a source. “Somewhere” got no Globe nominations in the end. I’m not sure if this means that a)Coppola didn’t care about the Globes or b)the HFPA members thought it was more important to be in a movie than to vote on it later. Either way, they all made their own decisions here…

...THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY has bought a 25% stake in Starz Media, announced around 4pm. It’s a good strategic measure since Starz cable channels will provide outlets for the Weinsteins’ movies like “King’s Speech” and “Blue Valentine.” And Starz has Anchor Bay Films, a small division that could provide some product for TWC. Anchor Bay’s “Solitary Man” might have been a bigger deal at TWC.

…Meanwhile, TWC’s “King’s Speech” did not get a WRITERS GUILD nomination for David Seidler because he didn’t belong to the guild when he wrote the movie. The WGA feels if it only gives nominations and awards to its members then writers will think twice about not belonging to the group. “Blue Valentine” also was ineligible, and so was “Toy Story 3,” “Another Year,” “The Ghost Writer,” “Made in Dagenham,” and “Biuitiful.”

Does it matter? Not really. The usual suspects made the WGA lists from “The Social Network” and “Black Swan” to “True Grit,” “Inception,” and “The Kids Are All Right.” The WGA ceremony is always right in the middle of the Grammy weekend, so it gets less attention. And in the end, the Oscars will nominate the missing films’ screenplays anyway. While “The Social Network” is easily the best adapted screenplay of the year, “The King’s Speech” is the best original one. The latter is so good that it’s going to go on and become a Broadway play–something I reported exclusively and first weeks and weeks ago.

Gerry Rafferty: Clowns to the Left of Him, Jokers to the Right

Gerry Rafferty, the man behind the hits “Baker Street” and “Stuck in the Middle with You.” has died at age 63.

Rafferty died of liver failure brought on by a long battle with alcoholism.

In his early days Rafferty worked with British actor/comedian Billy Connolly. “Stuck in the Middle” was a hit with his group, Stealer’s Wheel.  “Baker Street.” with its haunting melody and horn lines, was the radio hit of 1977-78. You could have taken it and Al Stewart‘s “Year of the Cat” and made a great movie. Indeed, “Stuck in the Middle” was featured memorably in “Reservoir Dogs.”
