Mariah Carey Tackled by NFL’s Jason Kelce: Her Christmas Song Falters on Charts for 1st Time in 30 Years

0

Mariah Carey’s 30th anniversary of ruling over Christmas is having some trouble.

I told you earlier this week that Mariah’s annual re-release of “All I Want for Christmas” barrage was in trouble. Page Six from the NY Post wrote the same story four days later, of course.

Now I can tell you that Mariah has really been tackled by the Philadelphia Eagles’s retired star Jason Kelce and friends. Their group, the Philly Specials, now has the numbers 1, 2, and 4 records on the iTunes Christmas songs chart. They have a top 10 hit on the iTunes Top 100 and a hit album with “A Philly Special Christmas Party.”

Mariah’s single is down around number 80 on the iTunes Top 100 and so is the album, called “Merry Xmas,” on the album chart.

Kelce is the brother of Travis, who’s the boyfriend of Taylor Swift. Travis has been known to harmonize with Jason on their previous two albums, but Taylor so far has not joined in. At least we don’t think she has. But fans may be scouring the songs for any sign of her voice or guitar.

Mariah is on her annual Christmas tour right now, and has launched a line of Xmas merch, too. It’s early in the holiday season, so “All I Want” may eventually return to number 1. But for now, the Philly Sounds have undone her longtime reign.

Box Office: “Red One” Starring The Rock, $30 Mil Weekend, Cost $250 Million

0

The Santa kidnap movie, “Red One” is sinking like a Rock, The Rock.

“Red One” will make around $30 million for the weekend. It cost $250 million according to reports.

Dwayne “The Johnson” Rock stars along with Chris Evans, of Marvel fame, and the Flame from “Fantastic Four.” Jake Kasdan is the director.

But “Red One” has flamed out upon launch.

This is a complication for Amazon MGM which has “Red One” in 4,000 venues. But the $11 million on Thursday-Friday is a bad omen for the future unless “Red One” suddenly catches on during the holidays.

On the Upside, “Red One” is the only “hit” of the weekend. Everything else has been around a while.

More tomorrow…

Ratings: “Grey’s Anatomy” In the Emergency Room with Half as Many Viewers as Competition

0

If ABC is going to cancel “Grey’s Anatomy,” they’d better let the producers know soon. They have to craft a big farewell episode.

Last night, “Grey’s” had just 2.13 million viewers at 10pm on ABC. That’s a little less than half of its competition, “Elsbeth,” on CBS.

The 21st season of “Grey’s” — which is about 10 too many — is off 29% from last year. Moved by ABC to 10pm, the veteran hospital drama is on life support.

The only good news is that “Grey’s” is beating the NBC drama at 10pm called “Found.” (Why would you call a show “Found” after “Lost” was such a hit?) So that’s something.

“Grey’s” is over. As I said, it should have American TV series run way too long. Mary Tyler Moore was right when she said, go out on top. Seven is the magic number. Every season after that risks a show’s legacy. “SVU” may be the only exception, but it found a new POV and life. When “Grey’s” killed off Patrick Dempsey, the die was cast.

Review: Elton John’s “Tammy Faye” Musical Brings Out the A List, and A Batch of Terrific New Songs

0

Elton John’s “Tammy Faye” Musical opened on Broadway last night to a an A List audience. It also brought a bunch of terrific new songs from Sir Elton, and high powered performances from a great cast.

Initial reviews are mixed, but I had a great time and so did everyone at the newly renovated and moved (upward) Palace Theater.

Among those in the audience: Michael Stipe, the great rocker from REM; Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen; comic actor Titus Burgess; Tony winner Celia Keenan-Bolger; favorite actor Richard Kind, plus TCM host Dave Karger. I’m told I missed seeing Alec Baldwin and wife Hilaria.

And, course, Sir Elton and husband David Furnish were there, as well as Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears, who wrote the song lyrics. So was Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker’s son, Jay, who is 100% devoted to the show.

Sir Elton and David are deeply attached to the subject matter. Tammy Faye Bakker seemed like a joke during her hey day. But what’s emerged in the movie starring Jessica Chastain, and in this musical, is what a courageous pioneer she as in acknowledging AIDS patients and the gay community. This is not a small thing. While the TV evangelist world of the 80s dismissed AIDS — just like Ronald Reagan, their hero — Tammy Faye was an avenger in mascara.

British actress Kate Brayben — who won an Olivier Award in the UK — makes a sensational Broadway debut as Tammy Faye. This won’t be her last time here. Brayben brings a humanity to Tammy Faye while belting out a dozen more new Elton John classics like “If Only Love” and the smashing 11 o’clock number, “If You Came to See Me Cry.”

Broadway stars and Tony winners Christian Borle and Michael Cerveris are no slouches either, playing Jim Bakker and Jerry Falwell. Borle gives Jim Bakker a personality, pathos, and humor. Cerveris brings down the house singing his heart out with his solo spotlight on “Satellite of God.” The songs are very Elton-ish, so much so that I can’t wait to hear the soundtrack CD. His zillions of fans will be thrilled.

What wobbles sometimes in “Tammy Faye” is the book by James Graham. The show is a gloss on the Tammy and Jim story, playing the highlights (including Jim’s affair with Jessica Hahn) but never getting under the skin of either subject. Still, it’s an entertaining show full of great sounds and performers. It’s worth our time. And Sir Elton remains an international treasure!

Sylvester Stallone Compares Trump to Slave Owner Who Also Had Wooden Teeth (No Fluoride)

0

Last night at Mar-a-Lago Sylvester Stallone came out of the closet.

He went full MAGA, giving a speech at a Trump party in which he compared the next president to a man who owned slaves and had wooden teeth.

That would be George Washington.

It’s no surprise that Stallone, who’s moved to Florida, is a Trumper. That he’s connected Washington — who owned 123 slaves by the time he died — is pretty hilarious. Washington had wooden teeth because the water so bad in 1789. Trump is going to let Robert Kennedy Jr. eliminate fluoride in the drinking water in 2025. Wooden teeth may be making a comeback!

Stallone is not exactly a progressive person. Two years ago he went after his “Rocky” producer, Irwin Winkler, with antisemitic drawings on Instagram. Stallone is angry that Winkler, who owns the “Rocky” franchise, won’t just give it back to him.

Stallone is in the twilight of his career. The movie part is over, and what’s left is “Tulsa King,” a kind of middling TV soap opera. Backing Trump is a very Charlton Heston move. Maybe he’ll be made head of the Department of Boxing in the new administration.

Conan O’Brien Set to Host a Tough Oscar Show This Year with Many Indie Films

0

The very affable and goofy Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars next March 2nd.

Conan is a great choice, and what the next Academy Awards need considering it’s a big year for indie films.

He’ll be dealing with a mixed pack of Best Picture nominees. Possible big studio candidates include “Gladiator II,” “Wicked,” and “Dune Part Two.”

But nothing is guaranteed. Right now, a pack of indie and streaming films are what will make up the bulk of nominations. They include “A Real Pain,” “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez,” “Maria,” “A Complete Unknown,” and so on.

Conan will have to develop some material and producers will have to think up out of the box ideas to bring in audiences since a lot of these films haven’t had wide distribution or haven’t attracted huge audiences to theaters.

“Wicked,” especially, will have to be a Barbenheimer type sensation for this all to work. “Gladiator II,” ditto.

The Academy will have to pull out all the stops, especially after the Critics Choice and Golden Globes will precede them.

Watch George Clooney Trailer for Broadway Debut in “Good Night and Good Luck”

0

Come next March, George Clooney will make his Broadway debut in “Good Night and Good Luck.” (It’s the same thing he said to Joe Biden earlier this summer.)

This is a stage adaptation of Clooney’s highly praised movie of years ago. Clooney will play distinguished CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow, a role played in the film to much acclaim by David Straithairn. David Cromer directs the play.

It’s a little unusual for a play to have a trailer but tomes are changing. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

Review: Angelina Jolie Exceeds “Maria” Callas Movie in Soaring Performance

0
Pablo Larrain has made movies about Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy Onassis that were captivating because of their respective stars’ performances. Kristen Stewart as Diana and Natalie Portman as Jackie were memorable even if the movies were flat. Now comes Angelina Jolie in Larain’s “Maria,” about opera diva Maria Callas. The big problem, of course, is that almost no one under 60 knows who Callas was anymore. Larrain and screenwriter Steven Knight don’t do her any favors. They simply assume the world is interested in hearing Callas tell her story to a documentary filmmaker. And that’s where things go wrong. Fortunately, Angelina Jolie, with regal cheekbones and jawline you could open sealed letters with, is so captivating you wind up watching “Maria’ just to see what she’ll do with the material. Jolie gives a great performance in a weird movie, but that’s okay. Her commitment to Callas — who lives on prescription drugs — is noteworthy. Unfortunately, unless you’re over 60, no one knows who Aristote Onassis was, and the movie never explains. Even though Callas was married, and then Onassis was married, they had a love affair that went on for years. They were the subject of American interest because Onassis married former First Lady Jackie Kennedy. The whole saga was an enigma. That was the real opera, not “Tosca.” Larrain and Knight don’t explain this upfront, so it’s hard to understand why we’re even here. It’s not for the opera, since the audience for that is limited at best, and older than any demographic. Jolie sings a bit, and her voice is mixed in with Callas recordings. But the singing never feels natural even when Jolie is at her haughtiest. I sort of knew that Maria Callas was a Diva with a capital D, though I never gave it much thought. Since the movie doesn’t really flesh out her background in a substantive way, the Callas part disappears as Jolie becomes sort of her own creation, just one who can sing. She seems a little like Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard.” When Jolie puts on Callas’s thick glasses, she looks more like an older Sophia Loren, someone a little more accessible maybe to audiences who watch TCM. You know, kudos to Netflix and Larrain for keeping Callas’s flame burning at all. But the film is a downer. Callas, Onassis, et al were part of the jet set, yet no one is having a bit of fun. There’s a lot of doom and gloom. On the upside, the sets, costumes, and scenic design are top notch. And cinematographer Ed Lachman is in his glory. Lachman will add one more Oscar nomination to his three already, and deserves to win at this point. Jolie will get her Oscar nom — she already has a supporting statue for “Girl Interrupted.” Her sense of timing rises above the deficiencies here. PS a shout out to Valeria Golino, who used to be in a lot of American movies like “Rain Man” but turned to directing pictures in Italy. She really has one scene her as Maria’s sister, and she nails it. She’s the only actor in this film who can go head to head with Jolie. “Maria” gets an Oscar run in theaters, then heads to Netflix on December 11th. If I were in Netflix marketing I’d promote it like crazy on PBS, NOR, and radio stations like WQXR FM in New York. That’s where they will find an appreciative audience.

Beyonce Gets No Sales Bounce from 11 Grammy Nominations, But Taylor, Sabrina, Chappell All Benefit

0

The Grammy nominations were announced last Friday.

As you may have heard, Beyonce scored a whopping 11 for her “Cowboy Carter” album.

But where are the sales? According to hitsdailydouble, Beyonce got no sales bounce from the news.

“Cowboy Carter” won’t even be in the top 50 this coming week. Counting concludes tomorrow night.

This is in stark contrast to the other ladies who were nominated. Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan each sold an average of 48,000 copies of their nominated albums since the announcement. Even Charlie XCX did well.

What is the disconnect with Beyonce? Maybe it’s because she does no promotion whatsoever. Eilish was on “SNL” two weeks ago. The others are all over the media. But Beyonce remains an enigma.

Anyway, we won’t cry for Beyonce. She’s living a pretty good life. Can she win the Grammys by doing nothing? Does she care? I guess we’ll find out.

Confirmed: Rocker Patti Scialfa Readying Fourth Solo Album Release for Early Next Year

0

Everyone knows Patti Scialfa is a kickass rocker.

On albums with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Patti gets to show off some of her chops as a howling singer and intense guitarist.

Now I’m told rumors of a fourth solo album are real. A source in the E Street world says Patti will release the still untitled collection in 2025. The earlier, the better.

Scialfa’s three previous albums — 1993’s Rumble Doll, 2004’s 23rd Street Lullaby and 2007’s Play It As It Lays — are still in rotation at my house. So a new album is very good news.

It’s particularly good news since Patti has been battling multiple myeloma since 2018, a face revealed in the excellent new Springsteen doc, “Road Diary.” But she looks great, and maybe the new album will include here recent duet with Bruce on “Addicted to Romance.”
