“Minecraft” Soundtrack, “Hamilton,” Chicago’s 1st Album Library of Congress Adds Ridiculous to the Sublime

0

The Library of Congress picks 25 recordings ever year to add to the National Registry.

This year, the choices range from the ridiculous to the sublime.

The soundtrack to a video game, “Minecraft,” would be among the former.

Among the latter, Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” Miles Davis’s “Bitches Brew,” my beloved “Koln Concerts” from Keith Jarrett, and the first — and best — album from the group Chicago.

See below.

Elton John-Brandi Carlile Collaboration Headed to Most Physical Sales This Week of Any Albums

0

Elton John and Brandi Carlile really have a hit record.

“Who Believes in Angels” will finish the week tomorrow at number 1 among all physical sales — meaning CDs and paid downloads.

The total should be upwards of 40,000 units. That’s a real accomplishment and the only number that matters.

The album has held firm at number 1 all week on iTunes and amazon.

“Who Believes in Angels” will finish sixth or seventh overall because there’s little streaming going on. Fans of these two fab singers want the product in hand. It’s not just a dip-in on Spotify.

Meantime, Sir Elton has declared peace with Madonna after decades of feuding. Madonna came to see him backstage at “SNL” this past weekend and they buried the hatchet — and not in each other!

Maybe the Middle East problems can be solved if Netanyahu hosts “SNL” and Hamas comes backstage!

Here’s what Madonna had to say:

RIP Steven Spielberg’s Beloved Longtime Publicist, the Great Marvin Levy, Passes Away at 96 After a Legendary Run

0

Marvin Levy has passed away at 96.

Steven Spielberg’s beloved and long time publicist was the dean of all Hollywood press agents, loved and respected.

Spielberg says: “Marvin’s passing is a huge loss for me and our industry writ large. There are many talented PR executives, but Marvin was one of a kind. For over 50 years, he was a deeply loyal and exceptional collaborator who was respected and appreciated by all those who were lucky enough to learn from his counsel. When it came to handling the press, he had no peer.”

Marvin Levy, you know, was a mensch.

Spielberg continued:
“To the media-and the world of exhibition, Marvin was the face of Amblin. We were opposite ends of the movie-making process. Every time I reached the end of production on a film, Marvin’s work had only begun. Through countless films, tv series, Amblin events, awards campaigns and our public relations strategy—this is where Marvin came alive. He loved his work—and was endlessly enthusiastic about our business. He was creative, innovative and respected for his knowledge and honesty. He was excited to figure how new and better ways to present films to audiences. As a result, he was the first and only publicist to receive an Academy Award. In awarding the honor, the Academy highlighted his “exemplary career in publicity that has brought films to the minds, hearts and souls of audiences all over the world.”

I’m a little verklempt. Through thick and thin, and the many, many Spielberg movies, Marvin was there for me at all times. He kept the trains running, as they say, which wasn’t easy when you think of how prolific Steven has been over the decades. He really helped me a lot on movies like “Minority Report” and “Saving Private Ryan.”

Marvin worked at Columbia Pictures with Spielberg on “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” in 1977. He soon left to work exclusively alongside Spielberg, first at Amblin Entertainment and later at DreamWorks Studios, and on and on right through “The Fabelmans.”

Marvin was honored with a Lifetime Oscar in 2018 and it was much deserved.

Condolences to his lovely wife of 74 years, Carol, his whole family, and many legions of admirers.

“Saturday Night Live” Ratings Up Slightly from Previous Week, with Jack Black, Elton John & Brandi Carlile

0

“Saturday Night Live.” It’s up, it’s down.

The ratings stay within 4 and 5 million.

This week’s show, with Jack Black hosting and musical guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile, was up from the previous week.

The show added around 250,000 viewers to 4.53 million. This was a recovery from the Mikey Madison week and a return to Lady Gaga’s area of 4.63 million two weeks earlier.

Top show this season was almost 6.6 million for John Mulaney and Chappell Roan. The most recent hit outing was Timothee Chalamet hosting and singing, 5 million.

The good news is that Jack Black’s movie, “A Minecraft Movie” is number 1. And so is the new album from Elton John and Brandi Carlile. The album, “Who Believes in Angels,” will be the top selling physical album of the week with 40,000 CDs and paid downloads.

This week comes Jon Hamm, promoting a new TV series, and Lizzo, trying to recover from terrible publicity.

BREAKING Associated Press Wins Injunction Against Trump, Can Return to White House For Time Being

0

The Associated Press has won an injunction against Donald Trump. They can return to the White House press room and Oval Office while their case is ongoing.

Trump kicked them out of The White House because the AP refused to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

This is a triumph for the First Amendment and the free press.

CBS Renews Soap Opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” for Three More Seasons Despite (Or Because of) Strange Stories

On “The Bold and the Beautiful” recently, a character named Finn recalled suddenly that he’d slept with his adopted aunt when he was a teenager. They have a child together.

That kind of story is very popular on the CBS soap, which the network just renewed for three more seasons. That will take it to its 41st, in 2028.

The half hour soap has so-so ratings but is very popular in places like Italy and other countries. It is also now wedged between number 1 soap, “The Young and the Restless,” and the new up-and-comer “Beyond the Gates.” It’s an easy soap to follow because it tells the same story over and over, on a loop.

A half hour soap already set up and established is easier to produce than a whole new talk show at this point. So, God bless. Meantime, the actors don’t age, which is a miracle in itself after almost four decades.

“White Lotus” Finale Propels Billy Preston’s 1974 Hit “Nothing from Nothing” to iTunes Top 40

0

We know “The White Lotus” season finale was a hit, but not because of ratings.

The song that closed out the final episode, Billy Preston’s “Nothing from Nothing,” has hit the iTunes top 40.

The 1974 track by the “fifth Beatle” is number 35, as we speak.

HBO says over 6 million people watched the episode on all platforms. Numbers for linear HBO haven’t come in yet, but should be well over 1 million.

Show creator Mike White only used 1 existing pop song in the eight episode season, and that was “Nothing from Nothing.”

Past hit songs that ended other hit series also got big chart boosts in the past. They include Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” at the end of “Breaking Bad” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” at the conclusion of “The Sopranos.”

My advice to “White Lotus” fans is don’t overthink the show. A lot of it, in retrospect, makes no sense at all. But the performances stand out. Parker Posey, Sam Rockwell, and Carrie Coon look like they’re headed to the Emmy Awards. I’m sure the show, Mike White, and the below the line artisans are, too.

John Stamos Not Sorry for Going to Mar-a-lago, But Sends Everyone to Anti-Trump Legal Advocacy Group

0

John Stamos — Uncle Jessie from “Full House” — made a big mistake this weekend.

He spoke at a Palm Beach charity event held at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago.

Eighty years ago, this would have been like stopping by Luftwaffe Headquarters to promote Easter Seals.

Stamos’s fans went crazy and criticized their once upon a teen idol. He responded that he was supporting the Academy for Nursing and Health Occupations, which in turn supports front liners. Stamos says they train 350-400 nurses a year.

That may be true, but optics are everything. The owner of Mar-a-Lago is a reprehensible monster who’s burning the world down. Stamos should have been aware of that. So should have the Palm Beach Ray of Hope foundation which is only a year old. There must have been other venues.

As a matter of defense, Stamos directed his critics to a group called Democracy Forward. The Washington DC legal group bills itself as “bipartisan,” but in fact — this is a relief — is an anti-Trump legal advocacy group. Their leader, Skye Perryman, is a regular on MSNBC, where she touts the group’s almost daily legal filings against whatever horrid thing Trump has done that day.

Uncle Jessie was not the brains of the “Full House” operation. Obviously, that was the Olsen twins. Next time, some due diligence would go a long way to stay out of these messes.

Tom Cruise Bringing “Mission Impossible 8” to Cannes Out of Competition on Second Night of Festival

0

Three years after hitting the Cannes red carpet, Tom Cruise is back.

Paramount is bringing “Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning” to the Palais du Festivals on May 13th, one day after the festival opens. The Christopher McQuarrie action movie will be shown out of competition.

The movie features Cruise hanging from planes, jumping in the air, and running very quickly. There will also be a hint of romance and many explosions. There will also be great music from Lalo Schifrin.

In the end, will Ethan Hunt die like James Bond? Probably not. He’ll vanish into the mist and find a secluded home where Instacart delivers from a good steakhouse. Every day he’ll jump off the roof and run around his house. His gardener will deliver a USB stick tha once plugged in, dissolves quickly. It will have the Instacart receipt.

Feeling Old? Original Beatles Drummer Pete Best Retiring at 83, Was Replaced by Ringo

0

Pete Best is retiring from personal appearances.

The 83 year old was the original drummer for The Beatles. When he couldn’t make a gig, Ringo Starr arrived. And the rest history.

Pete’s retirement was announced by his decades younger brother — via his mother, Mona — named Roag.

It’s nice to see the brothers are close. Back in the day, Beatles road manager Neil Aspinall had a fling with Mona. There was a 20 year age difference. The result was Roag.

This was awkward as the now late Neil was charged with getting Mona out of the Beatles’ office, and laying off Pete. He accomplished his mission and fathered a child.

Pete’s lived his whole life in the shadow of the Beatles. He wasn’t The Best, but he’s a nice guy who’s managed to soldier on. It can’t have been easy. He’s retiring, while Ringo — a year older — is just bouncing along making specials and touring all the time.
