“Yellowstone” Season 4 Finale Was A Ratings Blockbuster with Over 10 Million Total Viewers

0

There was rending of garments, murder of a popular character and many declarations on Sunday night’s episode of “Yellowstone.”

There were also a lot of viewers. The season 4 finale of Kevin Costner’s horse opera drew over 10 million viewers on cable. The Paramount Channel grabbed 9.3 million, and Country Music Television lured in another 960,000.

No other program on Sunday night on cable or broadcast TV came close to those numbers except for NFL football. “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS only had 5.5 million viewers, by comparison.

But “Yellowstone” is no “Dallas.” Costner’s show only has 10 episodes per season, less than half of what typical network series had back in the day. And the season itself is undefined. We may not see “Yellowstone” Season 5 until next fall or winter at the earliest.

Nature abhors a vacuum. If I were the Paramount channel, I’d rerun all of “Dallas” and “Knots Landing” right now to fill the void. The time is right even to reboot the latter (the former has already had its chance).

Meantime, “Yellowstone” has two spin offs already running with “1883” and “Mayor of Kingstown,” and more coming. It’s a whole business now for Costner and creator Taylor Sheridan.

Grammy Awards Decision Coming Today: Should They Stay or Should They Go on January 31st?

0

All eyes will be on CBS and the Grammy Awards today. Should they stay or should they go on January 31st?

In Los Angeles, the COVID surge continues. I’ve been told that top talent is wary of packing into the Staples Center on the 31st, let alone the LA Convention Center on the 29th for Joni Mitchell’s Musicares Person of the Year dinner.

But moving the Grammy weekend isn’t easy. That would push the whole package including Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy dinner, to April or May. Anything is possible and so far no one seems to know what’s going to happen. I’m told even host Trevor Noah is clueless.

So stand by… the envelope with the answer will be opened any minute…

RIP Famed Actress Joan Copeland, 99, Sister of Playwright Arthur Miller, Won Drama Desk Award, Star of Stage and Soaps

Joan Copeland was one of my favorite people I ran into over the years. The famed actress sister of legendary playwright Arthur Miller died today at her house out in Amagansett at age 99.

Joan was a pip. Flashback to the summer of 2013, Joan appeared in the lobby of the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. This was a good 45 minutes away from her house. We were all there for the opening night of “Irma Vep.” “Joan,” I asked, “how did you get here?” She looked at me like I was crazy. She said, “I drove, of course. It’s only 45 minutes! The roads were very clear.”

Joan Copeland appeared in 13 Broadway productions. She won a Drama Desk Award in 1981 starring in her brother’s play, “The American Clock.” Four years earlier she’d been nominated for a Drama Desk Award in “Pal Joey.” She served as Katharine Hepburn’s standby in “Coco,” as well.

On TV, Joan was a staple on Procter & Gamble soap operas like “Search for Tomorrow” (a five year run from 1967 to 72), “Love of Life,” “One Life to Live,” and “The Edge of Night.” She was also a regular on “Law & Order,” appearing in 8 different episodes. She also appeared in several movies, but she was a real New York actor — the kind that barely exists anymore — and split her time between the soaps and Broadway.

Condolences to her family, especially niece Rebecca Miller, who I know was very close to her. Joan was a talented, lovely lady, a connection to really classic New York theater, and she will be very much missed.

Broadway: Lincoln Center Theater Will Close “Flying Over Sunset” Three Weeks Early

0

Lincoln Center Theater — an enigmatic deal to begin with — is closing its main play three weeks early.

Now “Flying Over Sunset” will shutter on January 16th, the same day as “Ain’t Too Proud” down on real Broadway.

“FOS” was a strange musical about old movie stars taking acid. Tony Yazbeck, Harry Hadon Patton, Carmen Cusack, and Michael Korie star, James Lapine wrote and directed it. I never saw it because Lincoln Center Theater ignores me, and I’ve managed to live without their shows. I guess I’ll miss this one, too.

Did you know Carmen Cusack is married to an actor on “Days of our Lives,” the NBC soap filmed in Los Angeles? His name is Paul Telfer. There’s some trivia.

There are plenty of tickets available for the rest of the run. Maybe I’ll nip over to the TKTS booth and get one. Or not.

Cliffhanger: Did “General Hospital” Kill Off Luke Spencer? No But They Got Publicity and a Story

0

I received a lot of messages today from fans of ABC’s soap, “General Hospital.” They were all: “General Hospital” killed off Luke Spencer.

No, they didn’t.

Anthony Geary, who played Luke Spencer for eons, retired and moved to Holland a few years ago. Then his long time scene partner, Jane Elliot, who plays Tracy Quartermaine, also “retired,” and they shipped her off to Holland, too.

But Elliot returns once a year, probably to keep her income up enough to get SAG AFTRA health benefits. They have to write her a story, and one that involves all the older cast members. So this time it was the “death” of absent Luke.

However: I looked at the tape. At the end of today’s show, the local villain, Victor Cassadine, indicated that he’d “neutralized” Luke, whatever that means. So Luke is alive. No one dies on soaps unless a body is produced, the death happens on screen, and even then resuscitation is always possible.

I go by the great movie parody, “Soapdish.” Whoopi Goldberg is the writer of the soap. She’s informed that Kevin Kline’s character is returning to the show after 20 years– even though he was decapitated when he left. Whoopi exclaims, “How am I supposed to write for a guy without a head!”

Easier than you think. (See the clip below.)

Good PR move by ABC Daytime. They got everyone talking about their show. And Anthony Geary, he’s at home in Holland, I suppose, arranging tulips, drinking beer, wearing wooden shoes, smoking pot, and laughing at everyone.

TV Syndication: “Drew Barrymore” Renewal Threatened by Low Ratings, “Hot Bench” Fans Who Want Show Back

0

Now is the time for TV syndicators to think about Fall 2022. Which shows will end, which will survive, which will be born?

At stake right away is “The Drew Barrymore Show” slot at 9am on CBS. “Drew” is in its second season and has never risen above 500,000 average viewers per day.

“Drew” comes with a lot of baggage. Produced by CBS, the new talk show replaced “Hot Bench,” owned by Judge Judy. “Hot Bench” hovers between 1.4 and 1.7 million viewers per day. It is very popular. But CBS thought it would make more money putting Barrymore into the 9am slot vs. established powerhouse “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” which is owned by Disney and shown mostly on ABC stations at the same hour.

So CBS let go of “Hot Bench,” which angered Judge Judy so much that she shut down her own hit show after 25 years and moved to streaming on the IMDB channel (owned by Amazon, big money). All the “Judge Judy” shows running on television this season are reruns as CBS owns the whole library and will just keep playing it over and over. For new “Judge Judy,” you have to go to Roku or Google Chrome or Apple TV devices.

But look, “Hot Bench” — playing now on lesser local channels and at odd times– is still getting between 1.4 and 1.7 million viewers per day– roughly three times’ “Drew’s audience. And other talkers are coming in, with rumors of Jennifer Hudson aiming to do a “Kelly Clarkson” like move. (She’d be great.) Plus, Kelly is getting the bump up next fall after Ellen Degeneres exits the arena.

Will “Drew” make it a third season? Or will CBS the show the error of its ways and return “Hot Bench: to its home at 9am on their owned and operated channels? Everyone is awaiting this verdict.

“Sex and the City” Review: Carrie Flips What Looks Like a $10 Mil Apartment, Buys a Mattress from a Defunct Company

0

The sixth episode of “Sex and the City…And Just Like That” arrives on HBO Max Thursday after 12 am. It’s kind of slow and a little depressing, although I did laugh a couple of times, albeit ruefully.

The main story concerns Carrie, now widowed, buying what looks like a $10 million apartment in the West Village. They never say the price, but from the size, the views, the windows and height of the ceilings, she didn’t buy this place with the money earned from writing sex columns. She buys it with Mr Big’s money. What isn’t addressed is that Carrie is very rich now, financially independent after earning about 8 bucks a year.

Weird error: Carrie tells her pals she bought a new bed from 1-800-Mattress. It’s not possible. 1-800 Mattress– leave off the last s for savings — was sold to KKR Investments, which turned it into MattressFirm about five years ago. This is a dated reference, like a lot of others in this series.

Meantime, Miranda’s lesbian sex scene from last week is recalled graphically, this time to Charlotte, who is appropriately horrified. But Carrie gets off a good line sitting at a picnic table, so the whole thing was worth it.

Carrie also attends some kind of celebration with her Indian realtor, played by Sarita Choudhury, who really needs her own show. She is a superstar in her own right. Sarita’s mother is played by a real superstar, Madhur Jaffrey, who should have had a special credit. (Oh well. Carrie’s dress at the Diwali celebration may not go down well, especially her hair style, but I’ll leave that to others.)

“And Just like That” has ground to something of a halt since there’s no Samantha, meaning no sense of humor, and no fun. Last week, Carrie had hip surgery. This week, she investigates a face lift. Next week it will be liver pills. She’s 55 and acts like she’s 75.

There are many weird things about this series. Among them: Carrie has no interest whatsoever in her friends’ kids. The kids have no interest in her or the respective other women. Miranda’s son is supposed to be 17, looks 25 (is 27 in real life) and talks so disrespectfully to her someone needs to slap him fast. He also bears zero resemblance to his father, who has disappeared (but I’m sure will get an earful soon). Also, I’ve never understood how none of these people have any family whatsoever. Are they all orphans?

“And Just Like That” is a Grimm fairy tale. PS They mention Samantha again, I don’t know to what purpose.

Maybe this just isn’t a series for me. I’d really like Carrie and co. to run into Siobhan Roy at some fundraiser, and let the latter make mincemeat of all of them. Now THAT’s a crossover!

PS The big winner this season is Todd Rundgren. HBO used “Hello It’s Me” in the first two episodes, and this week they scored it in the background when Carrie was thinking about Big. I hope Todd got a nice piece of change from this clearance!

Sex and the City: And Just Like That the Theme Music from the TV Series is Gone, Did Anyone Notice?

Netflix Top 10: Even with Streep, DiCaprio, Blanchett Costly “Don’t Look Up” Finishes in 3rd Place Among Most Viewed Films

0

How many stars does it take to be number 1 at Netflix?

The TV platform has released its top 10 films of all time. “Don’t Look Up” with several Oscar winners finished not in first place or second but third among all Netflix films viewed in their fist 28 days.

The number 1 movie? “Red Notice” with The Rock, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds.

Number 2? Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” which is already a few years old.

And number 3? Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up.” It’s good, but not great considering how much money went into it. And curiously, some other powerhouse Netflix films aren’t on the list at all. Happily, “The Irishman” holds its own as others have come and gone.

So let that be a lesson. As I reported a while ago, “Don’t Look Up” was wildly expensive to make. Salaries just for Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence totaled $55 million. Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, and Tyler Perry didn’t come cheap. So the top line actors probably cost $100 million. And that doesn’t count everyone else including McKay and the production.

Bullock, by the way, has TWO movies in the top 10. The other one is her current one, “The Unforgivable.” You have to love this woman! Bravo to her. She’s a much bigger star than some others in her age range who thought they were number 1.

UPDATING: Sunday’s Golden Globes Winners Announcement Will Be Late (9pm EST) and So Far No Livestream

5PM TUESDAY UPDATE: The Globes still have no livestream or broadcast plan. They plan a ceremony at Beverly Hilton at 9pm Eastern time. No celebrities or press. Select members of the HFPA and some miscellaneous people will be invited to have COVID tests and proof of vaccination. They’re trotting out their diveristy guy and will emphasize their charitable giving. As of today, the HFPA doesn’t have an available Form 990 for their 501 c3 for 2020.

EARLIER TODAY You may recall the defrocked Golden Globes. They are supposed to announce winners of their 2022 awards on Sunday.

So far, no one knows what’s happening. I’ve talked to members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and they are clueless.

Is there a live stream on Sunday? Does it come from a specific venue? Will any stars show up?

The answer is: Who knows?

I’m told no invites have gone out to HFPA members. And no announcement has been made.

As you know, the Globes were cancelled by NBC because of their scandals concerning diversity in membership. There are also financial issues.

Over time, the HFPA managed to hire a diversity officer after the first one quit. They added several new members, six of whom are Black. (The HFPA had no Black members.)

The group also retired a few of its older members who didn’t want to go along with changes. They are now listed as “Emeritus.” I’m told this means they are out, basically, and can’t vote.

With their January 9th date with NBC gone, the HFPA was supplanted by the Critics Choice Association. The CCA took the date and booked the CW and TBS Networks and the Fairmont Century City Hotel ballroom.

But the HFPA decided they would proceed with January 9th in some form even with the CCA broadcast now taking their date.  That seemed like a low ball on the part of the HFPA but hey, at this point, what did we expect?

Alas, the CCA had to cancel January 9th because of the rise of COVID cases in Los Angeles. They are not eyeing a date in March.

Now we wait to see what the HFPA will do on Sunday? A livestream? A Zoom show? Facebook Live? Twitter? Or maybe they’ll use aol. Hah!

Seth Meyers Tests Positive for COVID-19, Week of “Late Night” Shows Cancelled

0

Seth Meyers has tested positive for COVID. The rest of the week of shows is cancelled after last night’s return. The show will return next week in some form, maybe.

Get well, Seth! Sorry to all the guests who were booked.

Yesterday Jimmy Fallon revealed to his audience that he’d tested positive at the beginning of the Christmas break. But he was back last night, looking and feeling fine. He thanked all the medical professionals who helped him.

The beat goes on…
