Sundance Review: Emma Thompson Naked and Unafraid in Stunning “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”

0

Sundance: Oscar winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End”) has always been an uncommonly fine actress, whether she was the painfully restrained but deeply caring housemistress in “Remains of the Day” or the painfully restrained but deeply caring Elinor Dashwood in “Sense and Sensibility” (she also got an Oscar for writing the screenplay). You may know her as Nanny McPhee. or as the Baroness in “Cruella.”

Now she’s gone and done something quite extraordinary. At the age of 61, Thompson appears naked in more ways than one in Sophie Hyde’s “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” The movie is “written and created by” Katy Brand, who appeared in the “Nanny McPhee” sequel in 2010 and must be a friend of Thompson. (This movie has strange credits, by the way).

You’d almost think that “Leo Grande” is an adapted play. But it’s not. It’s an original, very original in fact, in its whole execution. I’m not sure how it will get away with an R rating, but who cares? This much is certain: Thompson will be heaped on with awards in 2023. So get ready.

Thompson plays “Nancy” (not her real name), a widow and retired school teacher who hires “Leo” (not his real name) for sexual instruction. They meet in a hotel. Leo is played Daryl McCormack, who looks a little goofy in real life but a hot hombre in the film. He’s going to help Nancy have her first orgasm ever and enjoy her body for the first time in her life.

The conversation between Nancy and Leo is frank and modern. And as Nancy peels off clothes, she also peels herself off like an onion. In doing so, she also seeks to find Leo’s layers, so when they’re not naked and having sex (a glut of which comes at the end of the film) they are finding out important stuff about each other.

Thompson is brave– not because she’s fully unclothed without help from the makeup or props department. Her courage is in allowing herself, an Oscar and Emmy winner with lots of other accolades, explore an intimate world we don’t see in films nowadays. She was one of Mike Nichols’ favorite actresses, and you can see why. She’s willing to plumb depths of her soul.

Other reviews I’ve glanced at talk about this movie being “sex positive” which is lingo for 2022. Brand reaches some nice conclusions and resolutions, the kind you won’t see on Lifetime or Hallmark. “Leo Grande” may shake up the landscape when it finally gets released. In the old days Miramax would have picked this up and gotten Oscar nods for everyone involved. LionsGate has it in the UK. I’m curious to see what happens in the U.S.

PS This is a total aside, but Sundance is brimming with terrific performances by actresses directed by women director. Case in point: Elizabeth Banks in “Call Jane.” More on that in my next piece.

Exclusive: Adele Was Using Non-Union Musicians in Las Vegas Gig, Opposite of Pro-Union Lady Gaga

0

The difference between Adele and Lady Gaga, at least in Las Vegas.

Gaga has been using union musicians since she started performing there a couple of years ago. Adele has not.

Keith D. Nelson, secretary/treasurer of the Musicians Union in Las Vegas, Local 369, says that the band for Adele’s now cancelled 13 “Weekends” gig — 26 shows– had gone outside the normal system to bring in musicians.

According to sources, the band — even though they weren’t part of the union — was rehearsing up to the moment Adele announced the “rescheduling” of the 13 weekends.

When musicians are needed for a show anywhere they are usually brought in through a local “contractor.” But I’m told that Adele used a contractor no one ever heard of, out of Canada, to go around the Local.

Nevada is one of 28 “right to work states” which allows employees to take work in unionized settings even if they’re not members of the union. The other states in this group are mainly poor and “red.” Nevada, ironically, is considered “blue” and financially sound thanks to gambling.

Wait: isn’t Adele supposed to be from working class roots? “They’re attempting union busting,” says Nelson. When Adele was on tour for her “25” album, in places like Radio City Music Hall, she had to have union musicians. This turn of events may be why she wanted to “sit down” in Vegas rather than hit the road.

Nelson adds that Adele is not alone in Las Vegas looking for workers who will go outside the pre-ordained system. But this way, the musicians are without rights if something should happen to their show. In this case, Adele’s band may be up a creek without a paddle.

Nelson says Lady Gaga is the most popular performer in Vegas these days because she observes all union rules with her musicians. I’m not surprised. We know Stefani Germanotta is a mensch.

It’s unclear what happens to the non union musicians now that their Adele has been cancelled, er, rescheduled. They’re not working. Let’s see if they get paid for the 16 weeks.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Play: Actor Playing Adult Title Character Fired for Sexual Misbehavior

0

It’s not just COVID causing trouble on Broadway.

Over at “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” there are other issues of substance. Today it was announced that the actor who’s been playing the adult Harry Potter for almost two years has been fired.

James Snyder was dismissed after an independent investigation that began in November. Snyder acted inappropriately with Diane Davis, the actress who played his wife, Ginny. Snyder is married and has two children.

Snyder and Davis were replacements for original cast members. They started around the same time, in February and March 2019.

“The Cursed Child” started out as two plays, Parts 1 and 2, but was combined into one when it returned from the Broadway lockdown. There are a lot jokes on the internet now about Harry Potter and his magic wand, but we won’t go there. It’s bad enough that Davis’s name is out there. She’s the victim, but bravo to her for her courage in this matter.

A statement from the production states in full:

“On November 19, 2021, the producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the first time received a complaint from Diane Davis regarding the conduct of fellow cast member James Snyder. Immediately upon receiving this complaint, the producers commissioned an independent investigation by a third party, and Mr. Snyder was suspended pending the investigation’s completion.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the producers decided Mr. Snyder should not return to the production and terminated his contract. Ms. Davis has made the personal decision to take a leave of absence. Out of respect for her privacy—and to maintain the integrity of the investigation—we will make no further comment regarding the matter.

We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive workplace, which is why we have robust workplace policies and procedures in place for all those involved in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This includes strict prohibitions against harassment in any form, as well as channels through which any employee can report conduct that they believe is inappropriate. We will continue to do all we can to ensure the extremely talented team that brings this production to life feels safe, empowered, and fully supported.”

Box Office: “Spider Man 8” Climbs Back to Number 1, Knocking Off “Scream 5”:

0

Spider Man, Spider Man does whatever ais  spider can.

In this case, “Spider Man: No Way Home” does the unexpected and climbs back to number 1 with a $14 million weekend. The 8th Spider Man movie knocked off “Scream 5,” which did a respectable $12 million but finished second.

“No Way Home” is now comfortably lodged at number 4 on the all time box office list with $721 million. It has $40 million to go to over take “Avatar” at number 3.

The rest of the box office is uneventful. Something called “The King’s Daughter” opened on over 2,000 screens and made just $750,000. So much for that whatever it was.

“The King’s Man” is stalling at $31 million. Luckily it’s made $73 million abroad. How do you like that? They loved it in South Korea, France, and Mexico the most. Go figure.

PS The “Spider Man” success has not crossed over for Zendaya in her HBO series, “Euphoria.” The series had 279,000 viewers last week on HBO Prime. The series is rated for adults and everyone over my age for being X rated and sort of ridiculous. If high school were really just a sex party, everyone would go back immediately!

Sundance: Lena Dunham’s First Big Project After “Girls” is About Porn And All Its Glories

0

First let me say that I think Lena Dunham is an excellent writer. Between “Tiny Furniture” and many episodes of “Girls,” I was always impressed.

So “Sharp Stick.” her first new big project, is a disappointment. There are flashes of Dunham’s wit and intellectual vigor, but basically she’s decided to drift into porn, and how a shy, 26 year old girl becomes obsessed with it. “Sharp Stick” is the charmless flip side of Sean Baker’s “Red Rocket.”

“Sharp Stick,” as opposed to Dunham’s other credits, has a lot of unpleasantness, too. It’s the story of Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth) who lives above her mother’s apartment (Jennifer Jason Leigh) which is also shared by her foster sister (Taylor Paige). They are an odd group, very John Waters- like, and the Waters references don’t end there.

Sarah Jo is 26, a self proclaimed virgin who works with developmentally challenged kids. One of them has for parents a pregnant Dunham and Jon Bernthal. Talk about an odd couple. Dunham resembles Divine in this movie. Bernthal is her studly husband whom Sarah Jo successfully propositions. These two embark on a loop of sex and cheating that seems to not to affect Sarah Jo’s conscience one bit.

Indeed, Sarah Jo’s obsession with screwing Bernthal’s Josh for some reason leads her into a deep dive into the world of porn. She takes it on like a PhD, vowing to have as many kinds of sex as she can while fantasizing about a porn star she finds on the internet (Scott Speedman, far from “Grey’s Anatomy).

“Sharp Stick” is like the opposite of “Ladybird.” It’s a coming of age story you’d rather not know about. While the actors are charismatic on their own, Dunham does nothing for them. I’m going to consider this film a weird pandemic digression, Dunham getting back to work so she had to start somewhere. Whatever she does next will have to be a major leap forward.

Sundance: Disney Focuses Its Searchlight on Horror Cannibalism With Charmer Who Cuts Up Dates and Eats ‘Em

0

You will want to become a vegetarian after watching “Fresh.” Or should I say, “Flesh.” This is a horror movie that is pretty disgusting, not terribly clever, but one that Disney- yes, Disney– will release this year.

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Mimi Cave’s “Fresh” is a movie about cannibalism. Yes, cannibalism, the eating of people. Yes, Disney. It’s not a parody or a satire like “Get Out.” It’s a straight up horror film about a charming doctor, played by Sebastian Stan, who seduces women, kidnaps them, and carves out pieces of them for sale to high paying customers. Eventually, they’re all carved up and dead.

Written by Lauryn Kahn, I guess “Fresh” is supposed to be hip. It’s way too hip for me, that’s for sure. (Hip may be on Dr. Steve’s menu.) Disney will release it not on DisneyPlus but on Hulu, and try and distance their brand name. But it’s Disney, folks, nonetheless.

Plodding along the lines of “Get Out” and “Parasite,” “Fresh” may considered hip because a woman wrote it and another one directed it. But women can make the same mistakes as men. Just because you’ve got a good cinematographer and production designer doesn’t mean you’ve got a good movie.

At his country house, Steve has imprisoned other women when he brings Noa (two by two?) to his lair. She wakes up drugged and chained in a room, where Steve explains how he’ll be carving her up. And he does. From different women he’s taken pieces of their posterior, legs, and other body parts. We get to see interspersed scenes of Steve’s rich, fat customers chowing down on his victims. At one point, he invites Noa to have one of his gourmet meals, and they discuss which part came from which girl.

(Is this a sly comment on veganism vs. carnivores? I doubt it, and the intent isn’t there for satire.)

All that saves the film is the casting. Noa is played Daisy Edgar Jones, who comes mostly from TV and is very appealing. Noa’s best friend is Mollie, played by Jojo T. Gibbs, and she makes an impressive movie debut. Dr. Steve is none other than Marvel’s Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan, who is not getting good advice on film roles– he should not have done this. But maybe it’s part of his Disney-Marvel deal.

Of course the whole thing ends up with a bloody climax and denouement. Cave manages to ratchet up the tension and drama, but nothing here is as sophisticated as they think it is. There is a slight twist when Mollie meets Steve’s family, but I’ll leave that unspoiled here in case you see “Fresh.”

I’m bewildered by this turn for Searchlight, the studio of “Nomadland” and “The Shape of Water,” and so many wonderful films. I can’t image the former stewards of this studio wanting this on their resume. But horror is cheap, and it’s ‘in’.

Sundance: Sinead O’Connor Doc “Nothing Compares” Details Child Abuse of Star, Lacks Essential Music

0

Sundance: Sinead O’Connor is a powerhouse and a deeply affecting performer. I met her only in 2012 at a Curtis Mayfield tribute concert in New York and found her delightful and fascinating.

But a cloud hangs over Sinead. She was severely tortured as a child by her mother both mentally and physically. This beautiful girl with the huge intellect and gorgeous voice cannot escape her part even when she’s tried. Last week, her eldest son committed suicide. She herself has struggled with mental illness issues.

The documentary “Nothing Compares” is playing at Sundance and tries to grapple with some of this although it stops in 1993. It is largely a clip job but the audio is fascinating. It plays like a radio play or a podcast. It’s engrossing but lacking in many important details. Little of Sinead’s music is included, especially the title song, “Nothing Compares to You.”  Either the producers couldn’t afford to license it, or O’Connor’s people wouldn’t allow it, or Prince’s people wouldn’t allow it. Whatever, it’s a huge gaping hole. Also, for some reason the clip of her ripping up the Pope’s picture on “Saturday Night Live” isn’t here. Again, this may be a budgetary issue.

What’s clear is that “Nothing Compares” is the starting point for what could be a great doc in the future. O’Connor was ahead of her time in almost all realms and has paid a dear price for that. Her own detailing of abuse at her mother’s hands and in the Church are terrifying and sad. I am so sorry for what she’s been through with her son (none of that is in the doc). Again, the night we hung out in 2012 she was an absolute delight. God bless her. But this film doesn’t do her justice.

PS I went to her Beacon Theater show when “Nothing Compares to You” was number 1. The level of intensity in the sold out venue was off the charts.. Nothing ever compared to that.

Vanity Fair Got Snookered by Priyanka Chopra On Cover Story, Baby Was Coming the Whole Time

0

“They’re a big part of our desire for the future,” says Priyanka. “By God’s grace, when it happens, it happens.” I point out that both their lives seem busier than ever. “No, we’re not too busy to practice,” she says. I laugh and clarify that I wasn’t talking about sex but rather about their breakneck pace with work. They will have to slow down when a child enters their lives.

“I’m okay with that,” she says. “We’re both okay with that.”

Unless Vanity Fair interviewed Priyanka Chopra for their new cover story nine months ago, the magazine got snookered royally.

Chopra and Nick Jonas announced the arrival of a baby this week via surrogate. Chopra is on the cover of Vanity Fair — for reasons that are mystifying to begin with — with Jonas right there on the scene. But all VF could get out of them was the quote above.

Now, who knows what went on backstage? But I doubt Rebecca Ford, who wrote the story, knew she was being had at the time. It wasn’t like when I asked Blake Lively’s publicist if the actress was pregnant at a luncheon. I was sitting next to her and she seemed like she was pregnant (you can never ask, maybe she’d had too many Mallomars). The publicist actually laughed when I queried, like I was out of my mind.

Ten days later, there was an announcement.

But this is bad. I feel for Ford. The last thing you want is a big surprise like that just after your story is published. Who knows? Maybe they’ll name the baby Rebecca.

As for Priyanka Chopra, I give her credit. She was on a short lived show on ABC, “Quantico,” and turned it into a career of celebrity. She is literally known for being Priyanka Chopra. She knew how to play the game. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Exclusive: Adele’s Vegas Show “Was All Loaded Into” Caesar’s Palace, How COVID Was Affecting Crew

0

There’s been a lot going at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace all month with Adele.

I’ve talked with the head of the local chapter of IATSE, the union representing the3 5 member or so crew that’s been working on “Weekends with Adele” since January 3rd.

For one thing, the sets and all the elements have been “loaded in” to the Colosseum. That part is done. But Phil Jaynes, president of Local 702, says that hasn’t stopped COVID.

“There’s no question we’ve seen a rise in cases and positive tests,” he said, although just today it looks like Las Vegas reached its peak and may be on the downslide trendwise. I asked Jaynes about that 35 “ish” member crew.

“For Adele’s show, they had maybe six people a day testing positive who had to leave.” That sounds like a lot, but not really. Jaynes assured me that he had plenty of crew to replenish the ones who left. Still, he concedes, the constant turn over is never a good idea. Once crew members have the routine and know what’s going on, it’s hard to educate new ones over night.

IATSE does not include musicians and singers. Adele’s show, according to a local report, includes a 60 member gospel choir. There were supposed to be 100 in the group, but only 60 showed up so it was pared back. It’s unknown at this time how many musicians were involved. (If you know, please email me at showbiz411@gmail.com).

According to the Las Vegas News Journal, there was at least one big set piece— a scene opener a la James Bond that might have meant “Skyfall” was the opening number.

There are plenty of shows up and running in Las Vegas right now, and many more coming including residencies with Rod Stewart and with Sting at the Colosseum. I asked Jaynes if it was normal that Adele’s entire 13 week run had been scrapped instead of just delaying for a couple of weeks. He replied, “A lot of people were very surprised.”

I’m told meetings are taking place at Caesar’s to try and figure out how to go forward. Jaynes told me if the shows are cancelled completely– which doesn’t seem likely given the mess with tickets– it would take “two weeks to load out.”

PS I sent an email today to Adele’s long time publicist, Benny Tarantini, asking when there might be announcement about the rescheduled dates. So far, there’s been no answer.

Law & Disorder: “SVU” is Up, Up, Up in Ratings While “Organized Crime” Has Fallen 1 Million Viewers Behind

0

There’s a lot of Law and Disorder right now in the NBC Thursday lineup.

This month, “SVU” is up, up, up in the ratings. Mariska Hargitay’s show has risen 20% in January, jumping 17% in its return on January 6th to 4 million viewers. The next week “SVU” lurched ahead 3.26%. Last night was stable with just a slight fall off.

This is pretty good considering “SVU” is in its 23rd year. Its main competitor,”Grey’s Anatomy,” has been off because of COVID. So the procedural has to do battle with a new hit CBS comedy, “Ghosts.”

But things are not rosy in Dick Wolf’s world. “Law & Order: Organized Crime” follows “SVU.” At first the Chris Meloni show followed close behind in the ratings because the two shows were linked. But on its own this month, “OC” has plummeted. There’s now a gap of 1 million viewers between the two shows. Last night, “OC” garnered just 3.1 million viewers. Not only are they losing the “SVU” lead by a lot, they’re down a million viewers since their debut last September.

This is all problematic since “Law & Order” classic is returning next month with Sam Waterston. The idea was to have a solid Thursday night. But “OC” is now the weakest link and getting weaker by the minute.

The problem is the premise. “OC” is violent and annoying. The Richard Wheatley story just goes on and on for no reason. The search for Meloni’s wife’s killer should have been resolved already. And “OC” is not like “Law & Order” shows. It’s just about one thing. The secondary characters and the rest of the show are undeveloped. If I see Dylan McDermott one more time as Wheatley, I will throw the TV out a window. (Not really, but last night the preview was so bad, I turned away immediately.)

So that’s the state of “Law & Order.” If they’re going to save “Organized Crime,” it’s time to retool it so that Meloni leads a repertory cast, and Wheatley is sent to jail. McDermott is too good an actor to waste on this stuff.
