Trump, in Latest Authoritarian Move, Tells the Smithsonian Museums That He Will Review All Materials for 250th Anniversary in His Vision of History

0

To all of you who voted for Donald Trump because you didn’t like Joe Biden, or thought Trump was a “disruptor,” or some other bull shit, you’ll like this.

In his latest authoritarian move — and there have been several just this week — the uneducated, flatulent, misogynistic, racist, blowhard has sent a letter to the Smithsonian Institute. He’s going to take control of it, the way he has the Kennedy Center.

Trump will essentially rewrite history for the 250th anniversary of the United States.

He plans on reviewing all materials and deciding if they align with his idea of history.

You can read this travesty here. Click this link.

The bottom line: “Museums should begin implementing content corrections where necessary, replacing divisive or ideologically driven language with unifying, historically accurate, and constructive descriptions across placards, wall didactics, digital displays, and other public-facing materials.”

Trump told you he’d be a dictator. He is fulfilling his promise every day.

Will anyone in the government stand up to him? I doubt it.

Taylor Swift: New Album Called “The Life of a Showgirl” Launching Right on Time for Travis Kelce’s Football Season

0

The merch alerts went out this morning.

Taylor Swift has a new album coming sometime between now and October 12th. Like, right as football season begins. The cross marketing with the Kansas City Chiefs will be awesome.

The album is called “The Life of a Showgirl.”

Did you really think Taylor’s absence from public life was because she was chilling out, or getting married, or taking time off?

Forget it.

The announcement came yesterday on the Kelce brothers’ podcast.

No cover art yet but plenty of opportunities to buy “The Life of a Showgirl” in advance..

Vanity Fair Throws in the Towel, Fires Movie Critic and Correspondent, Will Retire Online Categories, Concentrate on Parties and Film Festivals

0

Vanity Fair is throwing in the towel.

Today they ousted movie critic Richard Lawson and writer David Canfield. They’re dumping online rubrics The Vine and HWD. There’s some chatter that Anthony Breznican, who came from Entertainment Weekly and is highly regarded, is gone.

There will be no more movie reviews from Vanity Fair. It’s easier to puff up celebrities if you’re also not criticizing them.

The magazine says it’s going to concentrate on their Oscar party and parties at film festivals. There will be no more talk of studio heads, because that makes them unhappy. There will just be breathless valentines.

This is all from the magazine’s new 36 year old editorial director, Mark Guiducci, best friend of Anna Wintour’s daughter, Bee Shaffer. Wintour is really the presiding chief of Vanity Fair. Guiducci is caring out her wishes.

This is what it sounds like when doves cry.

How long before Melania Trump is on the cover? (Check watch.)

Here’s the memo that went to staff:

Hello everyone.

Over the past six weeks, we have talked a lot about focusing on the intersections between Vanity Fair’s core subjects — Hollywood, the arts, money, politics, and style — in modern ways, from newsletters to TikTok to new platforms that don’t yet exist.

Today, we will start working toward our new editorial strategy, gradually sunsetting our siloed vertical structure to focus on Vanity Fair as a whole. We will be moving away from news aggregation, reviews, and trade coverage. We will no longer think of something as a “Hive post” or a “HWD post.” We will treat each story as a Vanity Fair story.

This does not mean we are becoming less ambitious. The opposite is true. Transformations are not without difficulty, but I’m thrilled to say that we are hiring for a number of new positions. They include a global creative director to oversee visuals and design across all editions and platforms. They also include two senior editor positions and three new correspondents, each focusing on Hollywood, Washington, and Style, as well as producers and an entirely new social team. We will continue to add roles.

As we look ahead to the Hollywood Issue, my first, we are working on a redesign of the magazine that will influence the look of Vanity Fair on every platform, including our live events, from the Oscar Party to our presence at film festivals.

I’m also thrilled to announce that Claire Howorth will be stepping into the role of Deputy Editor, overseeing our stories everywhere that they may live. In this role, Claire will guide our day-to-day assignments, from quick turn reporting to longform narrative features to live events coverage.

I’m also happy to announce that Daniel Kile will become VP, Global Content Strategy. Video, social, operations, audience development, and events teams will report to Daniel, who will also work closely with departments across the building, from Revenue to Product and Technology. In this role, Daniel will also be collaborating with Simone Marchetti and our global HOEC as we look to grow Vanity Fair internationally.

My favorite thing about the past six weeks has been meeting each of you 1:1 and seeing firsthand the immense talent here at Vanity Fair. I also know that these weeks have been busy, often exhilarating, and I appreciate everyone who has stepped up.

Bracing for Kennedy Center “Nominees” Announcement Tomorrow as Trump Continues to Divert Away from Epstein Scandal

0

Donald Trump thinks the Kennedy Center is his cat toy, and he can do anything he wants with it.

This morning he threatened to announce the annual honorees tomorrow. Who has he selected? Who will accept and actually come?

Trump sneeringly calls it the “Trump/Kennedy Center” just to get attention. He also claims the theater complex was run down or in some kind of financial trouble before he arrived like Mighty Mouse to save the day.

None of this is true. This is all a diversion away from the Jeffrey Epstein saga. So is inviting Putin to meet him in Alaska.

Who has been asked to take a Kennedy Center award? Liza Minnelli remains a sticking point. She’s waited a long time, she’s almost 80 years old. But will she accept?

A bunch of country stars will be in the mix. Names I’ve heard floated: Alan Jackson, George Strait, Lee Greenwood. That’s Trump’s bread and butter.

Who else? Maybe Johnny Mathis. Chances are, he’ll say yes.

Here’s a new name to consider: Sydney Sweeney. She obviously doesn’t deserve it, but she’s a Republican. How about Carrie Underwood? She sang at the Inauguration.

Whoever the choices are, the announcement tomorrow will cause a day of media coverage, and a day away from Epstein. That’s all Trump cares about.

PS Interesting wording below. “Nominees”? Or inductees? Is he just going to nominate a bunch of people and announce “winners” later? He would happily trivialize this process like a reality show.

Spike Lee’s Dizzying “Highest 2 Lowest” Premieres with Denzel, Jeffrey Wright, ASAP Rocky: A Summer Movie Gift

0

What a crazy night in Brooklyn!

Spike Lee, loyal to a fault to his home borough and neighborhood, brought his “Highest 2 Lowest” to the Brooklyn Academy of Music last night.

Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, Rocky ASAP, and John Douglas Thompson star along with La Chanze, Michael Potts, Wendell Pierce, and New York’s favorite actor, Dean Winters, who plays a cop channeling Winters’ crazy insurance commercials. Everyone was there in the beautiful theater usually used for live plays.

I sat with legendary folk singer Judy Collins, who’s lately bonded with Spike because her long musical association with his late father, Bill Lee. We were in a neat area that included rapper Slick Rick, Keegan Michael Key and his b.w. Elle Key, plus Don Lemon.

The late Salsa musician Eddie Palmieri, a true legend, is featured heavily in a breathtaking sequence in the movie. Eddie passed a short time ago, but his son – Eddie the Second — spoke before the screening and was so hilarious that he almsot gave away the movie. Spike had to give him the hook (in a good way) before he went too far!

“Highest 2 Lowest” is called a love letter to New York, and certainly looks amazing thanks to Matthew Libatique’s extraordinary cinematography — giving the remake of this Akira Kurosawa movie the feel of Woody Allen’s best work. There’s also a stunning score — also Oscar worthy — from Howard Drossin.

Spike has update Kurosawa’s original film so that now Denzel plays David King, a rap music mogul on top of the world. Literally: he and his wife and son live at the vertigo producing pinnacle of a Brooklyn skyscraper overlooking Manhattan and the East River. The film opens with Gordon MacRae’s performance of “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” as the camera spins around New York showing off its magnificence. But it’s also to show that David King is king of his world.

Right away, there’s a kidnapping of Denzel’s son mixed up with the son of Jeffrey Wright (in one of his usual scene stealing turns). Solving that plot is the main story, but then “Highest 2 Lowest” becomes an action movie, a thriller, a philosophical meditation. There are also a lot of laughs, don’t worry. The humor leavens what seem like dire circumstances so the audience knows this will all work out. But why are these events in motion?

ASAP Rocky plays a sketchy rapper who comes in during the second half of the film, and pulls the rug out from underneath everyone. Rocky will be the surprise of the season.

There’s an absolutely breathtaking action sequence in this film that involves Eddie Palmieri and band playing live, the subway above Yankee Stadium– with Yankees fan and cameo player Nicholas Turturro, Dean Winters on a police chase, not to mention exquisitely choreographed thieves on mopeds dressed in black that rivals any of Spike Lee’s other legendary set pieces (including Samuel L. Jackson and Halle Berry in “Jungle Fever” set to Stevie Wonder). We’re going to watch that a few times.

Denzel: he’s one name now. He can do no wrong. Even with Jeffrey Wright seriously trying to pull attention as the second banana, Denzel does a slow build with David King. He seems very unlikable at first, but as the screenplay evolves, so does David. Denzel — who made “Gladiator II” such a pleasure — knows to pay out his charms slowly. By the time he builds to a crescendo, you see what greatness on film can be. When David lists off a list of his favorite R&B singers, grinning from ear to ear, he’s got us in the palm of his hand.

“Highest 2 Lowest” isn’t perfect. There’s a tagged on end scene I could have done without. A little trimming would have helped the whole enterprise. But this is Spike Lee’s summer gift to us, and we are very grateful.

NY Film Fest on Hyper Drive: Not Just Springsteen, But DDL Return, Jodie Foster, Scorsese, Ben Stiller, Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke

0

The New York Film Festival 2025 has gone into hyper drive.

Yesterday they announced the Bruce Springsteen film, “Deliver Me from Nowhere,” as the spotlight gala.

You know Bruce will be there, which will cause mayhem.

Now added to the list of galas Daniel Day-Lewis’s return to film in his son’s movie, “Anemone.” (This is the spell check word of the season!)

Ronan Day-Lewis directs from his own script.

Family affair? DDL’s wife, and Ronan’s mother, director Rebecca Miller will unveil her five part “Mr. Scorsese” documentary about everyone’s other favorite filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

Then there’s Ben Stiller’s documentary about his parents, “Stiller & Meara,” which I already want on a DVD, called “Nothing is Lost.”

Plus Richard Linklater has two movies! “Blue Moon” and “Nouvelle Vague.” The former is said to Ethan Hawke’s best performance ever, and also features stellar supporting work from Andrew Scott (who won the Silver Bear for best supporting performance at the Berlinale), Margaret Qualley, and Bobby Cannavale.

What do we do? Sleep at the Empire Hotel across the street? Get $400 box lunches from Tatiana?

It’s a conundrum!

Plus, Jodie Foster, who’s fluent in French, stars in Rebecca Zlotowski’s “A Private Life,” which is all in that language with subtitles. So Jodie’s gunning for a third Oscar.

Whew!

There’s also a 39 minute documentary about actress Carol Kane and her 98 year old mother, Joy, from director Nathan Silver, who made the lovely “Between the Temples” last year with Carol. Plus, of course, many full length and short docs that all look pretty tantalizing.

Off to the races!

Box Office “Weapon”-ized with $42 Mil Opening for Horror Film, Plus a “Freakier Friday” Than Guessed Gives Sequel $29 mil Weekend

0

Everyone’s digging “Weapons.” Especially Warner Bros.

The horror film starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and of all people, Amy Madigan, hit the sweet spot this weekend.

Total box office: $42 million. Yes, you read that right. Another hit for Warner’s, which has done no wrong this year (except for “Alto Knights,” which got no love). Everything is booming, with “Superman” leading the way.

A Freakier Friday than the rest of the weekend was very good for “Freakier Friday.” The Jamie Lee Curtis-Lindsay Lohan reunion was great for families and girls, bringing in $29 million. It turned out to be easy money. “FF” should play well right through Labor Day and the start of school.

Not so great: “Naked Gun” fell 50 in its second weekend, leveling off to just $33 mil. They’ll get to $50 mil but the novelty of the possible romance between stars Liam Neeson and Pam Anderson has cooled considerably. Good for Paramount marketing to front load the whole show and put on a full court press. Great launch, better than anyone could have hoped.

Angel Studios, right wing Christian based, finally sent out a good movie and no one went. “Sketch” had a measly $5 million weekend. I guess Angel didn’t get church crowds in by giving them free tickets the way they wrangled $250 million for the awful “Sound of Freedom.” Poor Tony Hale, star of “Veep,” was a star and producer, I don’t know why he chose this as his move away from TV.

Trump Edict: “The Homeless Have to Move Out IMMEDIATELY” of Washington, First Ethnic Cleansing, Now Illegal Relocation of Citizens

0

Donald Trump has been practicing ethnic cleansing for six months, kidnapping, detaining, and removing immigrants whether they’re here illegally or not. He’s not sending them home, but to dangerous third world countries.

Now he’s going to start relocating American citizens without homes. He wrote this morning on his sewage system social media:

“I’m going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before. The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong. It’s all going to happen very fast…”

Incompetent, ill qualified Jeannine Pirro will likely help him carry out this debacle. He’s sending fair warning. Will the ACLU and other groups listen today?

All this insanity to distract from Epstein. First he paved over the Rose Garden. Now he’ll pave over Washington at large

Restaurateur Keith McNally’s Ex Wife Leaves Postcard of the Year After Dining at His Famed Balthazar Restaurant in Soho

0

Keith McNally is the owner of several famed restaurants in New York including Balthazar in Soho.

His bestselling memoir, “I Regret Almost Everything,” details his many successes and failures in business and romance. McNally also bravely tells the story of his stroke and recovery. You can’t put this book down for its honesty and humor.

McNally also runs a self-deprecating, refreshingly candid Instagram account where nothing is off limits. Today he offers this post card from his first ex wife, Lynn, who won a bunch of the restaurants they started together in their long ago divorce. It may be the postcard of the year. And McNally gets kudos for publishing it.

The ex couple can “dine out” on this story for years to come!

Bob Dylan, 84, Hits the Recording Studio in Albany With His Band For What Could Be His 41st Album, First Since 2020

0

The last time Bob Dylan released a new album was in 2020.

That was “Rough and Rowdy Ways,” which was a big hit and produced a 17 minute single that briefly went to number 1.

“Rough and Rowdy Ways” also has been the foundation of Dylan’s touring act for the last five years.

Now White Lake Recording Studios in Albany, New York reports that Bob and the band worked there recently.

Could Dylan be making his 41st album? Sure. Why not? He recently recorded with Barbra Streisand on her new duets album. He’s also been sounding great vocally after years of garbled singing. Plus, there’s lots to write about unless he’s doing an album of covers.

Also, this has been a banner year for Dylan with the released of the Oscar nominated “A Complete Unknown.” He hasn’t sold so many records in years.

Whatever the case, a new Dylan is more than welcome any time. So far in 2025 the total comes to just under 500,000.
