Kim Kardashian Turned Alec Baldwin’s Talk Show into “Charlie Rose for Morons”

0

Alec Baldwin squandered the second hour of his pedestrian talk show by devoting an entire hour to Kim Kardashian. In the middle of a national political debate, this is what he wasted his time on. Ratings? He had none last week. We’ll see if this works.

Who is Kim Kardashian? I have no idea, even now. She and her family are invented celebrities. They are purveyors of trash. Even if they’ve managed to turn that into a fortune, is that a reason to feature her? If that’s the criteria, why not Ron Popeil and the Pocket Fisherman?

Alec didn’t ask this Kim the questions that were pertinent: what about her sex tape? How will she explain that to her children? What’s it like being married to someone bipolar? What about her 72 day marriage to Kris Humphries?

Instead, the conversation was insipid. Alec is not a journalist, so we can’t blame him entirely. Someone must produce this show. But this was an infomercial for banality. “I never realized how much I was jealous of Kanye West,” Alec said. I threw up in my mouth.

Kim Kardashian herself is not interesting in any way. The only interesting parts of the interview had to do with Kanye West and Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner. I could have read the National Enquirer for that information.

Happy “Halloween” as 40th Anniversary of Classic Horror Film Scores Big But Falls Short of Record with $77.5 Million

0

Halloween is all about masquerading, and certainly the movie “Halloween” in 2018 is all about that.

As the 40th anniversary horror film sets a record today with a $77.5 million opening it’s interesting to see who’s behind the mask.

“Halloween” was made by people who don’t usually make horror films. The director is David Gordon Green, who made his name with a cult indie film called “George Washington” in 2000.

More recently, Green has worked a lot with wry comic actor Danny McBride. They collaborated on McBride’s original HBO series “Eastbound and Down.” Then they re-teamed for “Vice Principals.” Now McBride helped writer “Halloween” with his “VP” writer Jeff Fradley.

McBride and Fradley wouldn’t be the names that come to mind for a “Halloween” type movie. But the humor is what makes the 40th anniversary edition zip. It’s very Kevin Williamson, who made the “Scream” parody series off the backs of movies like “Halloween.” So the whole thing has come full circle.

Oscars: Glenn Close’s Stirring Performance in “The Wife” Is Even Better Than You Think

0

And so the re-watching of movies begins.

We are all wrapped up right now in Lady Gaga, and Melissa McCarthy for terrific lead performances. Next month we’ll have Nicole Kidman in “Destroyer” and Viola Davis in “Widows.” There’s also Olivia Colman as crazy Queen Anne in “The Favourite.” This is a bumper season for actresses.

But Glenn Close was sort of first this year, with “The Wife.” It’s a ‘small’ movie– the only explosions are from Glenn, whose portrait of Joan Castleman, the devoted wife of bestselling literary writer Joseph Castleman, is sly and calculated. You have to watch her eyes as the movie ticks away, and Joan — who seems dutiful– refuses to reveal a secret she’s kept for thirty years. When Close finally blows, the power of the blast could knock out a neighborhood.

Jonathan Pryce plays Joe, and it’s to his credit that he keeps baiting Joan/Close, torturing her and then pulling it back. Joe is a sadist, and selfish, although to the outside world he seems like a pussycat. Don’t discount Pryce’s performance. To get Glenn to her eruption, Pryce just keeps laying it on. When she finally does lose it, you’re surprised she hasn’t just rolled over in bed and killed him years before.

“The Wife” is strangely unique these days. It’s fiction, based on a novel that was inspired by the imagination of its novelist, Meg Wolitzer. Jane Anderson adapted Wolitzer’s novel for the screen. In almost every other movie, actors are playing people either truly historic or “based on a true story.” In the movie a young Joan Castleman (played by Annie Starke, Close’s real daughter, and a terrific actress) gets an earful from an older female novelist played by Elizabeth McGovern. She warns naive Joan that no woman will ever be taken seriously by the publishing patriarchy. I’ll bet Meg, who’s written several terrific novels, and her mother, Hilma Wolitzer, also an acclaimed novelist, could tell us a lot about that. Their experiences, poured into Joan, come whistling out of Glenn Close like steaming water in a tea kettle.

Glenn Close has six Oscar nominations. I dare say she’s waited her turn. “The Wife” — no capes, no escapes– may just be her moment at last.

Actress Selma Blair Says She Has MS: “I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps.”

Actress Selma Blair– very underrated– has posted to Instagram that she has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The diagnosis was made on August 16th by actress Elizabeth Berkeley’s brother, Dr. Jason Berkeley. Selma says: “I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps…I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others. And even to myself. You can’t get help unless you ask. It can be overwhelming in the beginning. You want to sleep. You always want to sleep. So I don’t have answers.”

Selma is 46, and currently stars in the Netflix series, “Another Life.” She works all the time but her most famous movie was “Cruel Intentions” from 1999. She was Charlie Sheen’s original co-star in the “Anger Management” series, but left after not being able to endure Sheen. (Wise.) She was married from 2004 to 2006 to Ahmet Zappa, son of musician Frank Zappa. She has a 7 year old son from another relationship. She’s a damn good actress, and this is a lousy curve ball. Wishing her all the best. It sounds like she’s got a good support network and excellent medical care.

I was in this wardrobe fitting two days ago. And I am in the deepest gratitude. So profound, it is, I have decided to share. The brilliant costumer #Allisaswanson not only designs the pieces #harperglass will wear on this new #Netflix show , but she carefully gets my legs in my pants, pulls my tops over my head, buttons my coats and offers her shoulder to steady myself. I have #multiplesclerosis . I am in an exacerbation. By the grace of the lord, and will power and the understanding producers at Netflix , I have a job. A wonderful job. I am disabled. I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps. But we are doing it . And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best. Since my diagnosis at ten thirty pm on The night of August 16, I have had love and support from my friends , especially @Jaime king @sarahmgellar @realfreddieprinze @tarasubkoff @noah.d.newman . My producers #noreenhalpern who assured me that everyone has something. #chrisregina #aaronmartin and every crew member… thank you. I am in the thick of it but I hope to give some hope to others. And even to myself. You can’t get help unless you ask. It can be overwhelming in the beginning. You want to sleep. You always want to sleep. So I don’t have answers. You see, I want to sleep. But I am a forthcoming person and I want my life to be full somehow. I want to play with my son again. I want to walk down the street and ride my horse. I have MS and I am ok. But if you see me , dropping crap all over the street, feel free to help me pick it up. It takes a whole day for me alone. Thank you and may we all know good days amongst the challenges. And the biggest thanks to @elizberkley who forced me to see her brother #drjasonberkley who gave me this diagnosis after finding lesions on that mri. I have had symptoms for years but was never taken seriously until I fell down in front of him trying to sort out what I thought was a pinched nerve. I have probably had this incurable disease for 15 years at least. And I am relieved to at least know. And share. 🖤 my instagram family… you know who you are.

UPDATE Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade Played to A Mostly Empty House Last Night in Norfolk, Virginia

0

SATURDAY AFTERNOON: This is kind of sad.

Fox News’s Brian Kilmeade, co-host of Fox and Fiends, is playing to an empty house tonight in Norfolk, Virginia.

He’s on tour promoting some book about Andrew Jackson, but no one is coming. The 1,500 seat Norva theater has pretty much all seats available according to their online ticket system at 4:40pm. The show begins at 7:30pm.

I know most of my readers hate Brian (and all the folks at Fox and Fiends) but when I was at Fox News he was the least awful of the many hideous people on air. In fact I think he was a Democrat in those days. But you know, he’s been hostage there for many years, and eventually you become like your captors.

Tickets are only $53. And you get a copy of the book “Andrew Jackson: Miracle of New Orleans.” I think Andrew Jackson was the one who tried to move all the Indians to one area so he could kill them or something. Yeah it was called The Indian Removal Act. Otherwise, he was a really nice guy!

Beatles Bonanza: Listen to Three “New” Versions of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from “White Album” 50th Anniversary

0

We’re getting ready for the November 9th launch of the 50th anniversary of “The White Album.” I recently attended the press conference where Giles Martin, son of the late great 5th Beatle, George Martin, played samples from the tracks. The package includes his 2018 remix of the album, as well as rehearsal tapes, and a disc devoted to the famous “Esher” demos (pronounced Eesher).

In 1968 George Harrison had the three other lads over and they each played their songs– as Giles says, “unplugged.” The Esher demos sound amazing considered they’re 50 years old and were just…demos.

So here are the three versions of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” from the 50th anniversary box set, which you can tell I am excited about. The Take 2 version was included on one of the Beatles Anthology albums, but now it’s all cleaned up.

PS A month after “The White Album” package arrives comes two new packages from Paul McCartney devoted to “Wings Wild Life” and “Red Rose Speedway.” When the Beatles broke up it was so horrifying that any solo work they issued was received like a buoy in a dark and forbidding sea. With McCartney it was the “McCartney” album, then “Ram,” “Another Day” and then– what? “Wings Wild Life” emerged, without any single (why? who knows? “I Am Your Singer” could have been, so could “Tomorrow”). It was a weird time as Paul figured out what he was going to do. Then came “Red Rose Speedway” with “My Love”– commercial hits. I’m very anxious to see what the box sets are like. Of course, after “Red Rose Speedway” came “Band on the Run,” and the rest is history!

Box Office: “Halloween” Brings Jamie Lee Curtis to the Top, “Sisters Brothers” Finds No More Relatives

0

Jamie Lee Curtis played this very well.

After years away from the box office, the Hollywood kid — daughter of the late Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, a Brangelina of their days — is back on top.

“Halloween” made $33.3 million last night, a whopping amount heading to an $80 million or more weekend. Jamie Lee starred in the first “Halloween” what seems like one hundred fifty years ago — actually 1978. Back then, “Halloween” made a total of $47 million, which was HUGE for its time.

The other immediate news is that Annapurna Pictures for some reason added around a thousand theaters to the release of “The Sisters Brothers.” That was a mistake. You can’t blow lots of air into a flat tire unless it’s been repaired first. Annapurna is leaking. They made only $230,000 last night in over 1,000 theaters. The brothers could not find any more relatives. But now they have to pay theaters. This is worrying for their next two releases, “Destroyer,” and “Vice.”

More on this tomorrow…

NBC’s Thursday Night Is Must-Not See TV With Ratings Lower than Soap Operas

0

CBS won Thursday night’s ratings easily, with the potent combo of “Big Bang Theory” and “Young Sheldon” bringing in 11-12 million viewers from 8 to 9pm. Then “Mom” pulled in over 8 million, and “Murphy Brown 2.0” 6.5 million viewers– “Murphy” desperately needs work, it would never live without “Mom”‘s protection. No one I know can bear to watch it.

But CBS is golden compared to NBC. What the heck is happening? Look at these ratings. They’re lower than “The Young and the Restless.” Actually, NBC’s own “Days of our Lives” doing better at noon by comparison. Very few people are watching the NBC lineup even though it’s hip and cool and all that. Maybe it’s a promotional problem. But these numbers are Must Not See TV. I thought “Will & Grace”: was a big hit. And “SVU” should be doing a lot better. It’s tough out there!

“A Star is Born” Crosses $100 Mil Mark in 13 Days, Soundtrack, Singles Still Number 1 on Charts

0

“Halloween” will take the number 1 spot at the box office this weekend, with a predicted $70 million.

But “A Star is Born” crossed the $100 million mark Wednesday, after 13 days in release. It’s up to $104 million with no sign of stopping.

On top of that, the soundtrack is still number 1, on Amazon and iTunes. The album has placed 10 different spots on iTunes including “Shallow,” which holds at number 1. Not bad. Even Bradley Cooper has two hit singles!

As for Oscar buzz, I don’t see a way “Star” doesn’t swamp the categories: Best Picture, Actress, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay, and Song, just for starters.

What a good thing Bradley Cooper didn’t lose heart after “Star” almost had a false start and didn’t happen. And Lady Gaga? There aren’t enough good things to say!

Woody Allen Appears By Accident in HBO Doc About Art World, Director Says Turnabout Fair Play

0

Last night’s swell screening and after party at MoMA for “The Price of Everything” had a lot of revelations about the art world– and one about Woody Allen.

The HBO documentary is from Nathaniel Kahn, son of the late legendary architect Louis Kahn. It’s a fascinating look– I loved it– about the current state of the art world from prolific and successful artists like Jeff Koons to long time stealth star abstract painter Larry Poons.

Just as “The Price” begins, the scene is set at Sotheby’s for an auction of paintings from the collection of disgraced Sotheby’s chairman Alfred P. Taubman. As the camera pans the room of possible bidders, there is– unmistakably– Woody Allen himself. It’s not clear if he bought something, but he certainly had a paddle and was interested.

More than a couple of people in the MoMA theater could be heard saying, “Isn’t that Woody Allen?” (To which many replied, It can’t be.)

It was.

So what happened? Kahn told me that it is indeed Woody, who can be seen in three-quarter profile. “And turnabout is fair play,” Kahn said. “In Woody’s movie, Match Point, which was filmed in London, you can see a movie marquee clearly that was playing my film, My Architect, by my father. So, without planning, all the films are now connected.”

Coincidentally, Louis Kahn’s life was as complicated as Woody’s. He had three children, but only one with his wife, who outlived him by two years and died in 1996. Kahn’s other two children during the marriage were from other relationships. Nathaniel brought his mom, Harriet Pattison, to the premiere last night. She’s a vibrant 90, and is very proud of her Yale-educated filmmaker son.

“The Price of Everything” starts an Oscar qualifying theatrical run today at the Quad Theater (13th St. between Fifth and Sixth) before it hits HBO in November. Don’t miss it– it’s really terrific, if for nothing else how it traces Poons and George Condo each as they create their amazing art in real time.
