Nick Cannon Stepping Away from Morning Radio Deejay Job, Tweets “Y’all can have this planet. I’m out!”

0

“Morning radio family. I have decided to take some time away from my radio show so I can commit myself to deeper, more thorough reflection and education.”

So wrote Nick Cannon yesterday, stepping away from the mic at Power 106 FM in Los Angeles. Will he return? I think so. But his situation now calls for a better strategy than he’s employing. He’s got a rabbi from the Simon Wiesenthal Center on his podcast, which is great, but he still has posts on his own Twitter feed from less than two days ago reflecting his former hostile feelings.

In the meantime, overnight Nick sounded like he was having a difficult time balancing his contrition with criticism from peers that he’d abandoned them. Abandoned them from what exactly? Anyway, he Tweeted: I hurt an entire community and it pained me to my core, I thought it couldn’t get any worse. Then I watched my own community turn on me and call me a sell-out for apologizing. Goodnight. Enjoy Earth…Y’all can have this planet. I’m out”

Well, he’s not “out.” He’s still here, he’s got three kids and he’s got to deal with this mess. If he’s smart he’ll take a season off from everything and regroup, return with some new insights. And if he’s serious about all this, he’ll get some decent advice, starting with the overall look of his podcast. He’s posted a photo from his studio on Instagram, talking to Rabbi Abraham Cooper with the triple power fist behind him while wearing a bright red costume. That’s a lot of contradicting messages, frankly.

Here’s the Kygo Remix of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It”– She Isn’t Coming out of Retirement, Everyone Relax

0

Here’s the Kygo remix of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with it.” It was unnecessary, but we have nothing else to do. Is Tina coming out of retirement? No. When she appeared last November at the Broadway premiere of “Tina! The Musical,” she was sassy as usual but fragile. She didn’t even come to the premiere after party. We love her, we’re always happy to see and hear her, but Tina should enjoy her retirement. She worked hard and deserves it.

The video stars the great Laura Harrier and Charles Michael David. Sarah Bahbah wrote and directed it. The remix doesn’t do much to the original perfect record. This worked with Kygo and Whitney Houston last summer because it was an unreleased song, it was unexpected, we though there was no more in the Whitney archives. But this song is a massive hit for 35 years. No surprises. Tina’s people should find some unreleased material.

PS If Tina were up to it, she’d have been IN the video, even a cameo. She’s not. Which is fine. She’s given us EVERYTHING. She has nothing to prove.

Kate Winslet to Receive Toronto Film Festival’s TIFF Tribute Actor Award, Presumably via Zoom

0

The Toronto Film Festival is soldiering on despite the fact that no one is coming — we can’t go to Canada because the border is closed, plus no one wants to fly anywhere. It’s a very bad situation because we love TIFF and know they are suffering financially. The festival is looking for donation from film fans and movie studios.

Today TIFF announced that they’re giving their annual Tribute Actor Award to Kate Winslet. I guess this will be via Zoom. Kate is not flying in from the UK, obviously. And we’re not going up there. But we’ll watch it on Zoom. I’m sure the Oscar winning Ms. Winslet will send a pithy speech– I sure hope so, she’s one of the wittiest people I know. The first time we met, long ago, she told me to “Bugger off.” We’ve been friends ever since!

Officially:” The Awards mark an annual fundraiser to support TIFF’s year-round programming and the organization’s core mission to transform the way people see the world through film. The TIFF Tribute Awards honour the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements, recognizing leading industry members, acting talent, directorial expertise, new talent, and a below-the-line artist and creator.”

If you love film, send this festival a token donation! We want them in good shape for next year.

UPDATED Murdoch’s Fox TV Makes It Clear: “Masked Singer” Ratings More Important than Nick Cannon’s Anti-Semitic Statements and Broadcasts

UPDATED AND CORRECTED Rupert Murdoch’s Fox TV — not Disney, as I inaccurately wrote earlier– it  letting Nick Cannon remain as host of “The Masked Singer” despite his anti-Semitic statements and pro-Louis Farrakhan Nation of Islam videos on YouTube. The name Disney has suddenly disappeared.

Yes. Fox TV– which was not part of the Disney deal–  is more interested in keeping “The Masked Singer” with its format and cast for big ratings and not rocking the boat. So what if Cannon said white people are savages and agreed that Black Hebrews are the real Jews? What’s more important? That? Or someone dressed in a parrot suit belting a crap song?

“Nick has sincerely apologized, and quickly taken steps to educate himself and make amends,” Fox said in a statement Wednesday.

“On that basis and given a belief that this moment calls for dialogue, we will move forward with Nick and help him advance this important conversation, broadly.”

Perfectly reasonable.

Cannon was fired by Viacom from VH-1, MTV, and Nickelodeon. He didn’t apologize to them. Instead, demanded the rights back to his “Wild n Out” show, and apology from Shari Redstone.

Of course, Nick can always get work at Sean Puffy Combs Revolt TV online. Combs offered him a job on Twitter yesterday because he’s in sympathy with Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. For some reason, no one in the record industry is getting that message. But last week, Revolt TV was the only medium that would carry Farrakhan’s hate speech on July 4th.

What everyone is also not understanding is that it wasn’t one video on Cannon’s YouTube channel that was in question. There were several. They were all pro-Farrakhan, one of the most anti-Semitic, white-hating hate mongers in the world– maybe the leading one. In a time when we are trying to heal racial divides, Farrakhan should be everyone’s enemy.

Still to be determined is whether Cannon will host a daily talk show beginning September 21st for LionsGate in syndication, mostly on Fox stations. I can’t imagine guests signing up for that show, or the producers of it wanting to be involved. But we’ll see. Money talks in Hollywood.

Wait for It: Nick Cannon Sends Out Three Part Tweet to Rescue Career in Face of Anti-Semitism Remarks, Broadcasts

0

Nick Cannon– someone showed him the bottom line today. His anti-Semitic remarks, his demand for an apology and the rights to his “Wild n Out” show after Viacom fired him, finally it was drilled into this head that his career was teetering on the precipice of having such a nice Hollywood life.

Cannon posted a triple tweet not quite apologizing for his behavior, but kinda sorta saying he was trying to understand the really stupid things he’s said and done.

He writes tonight:

“First and foremost I extend my deepest and most sincere apologies to my Jewish sisters and brothers for the hurtful and divisive words that came out of my mouth during my interview with Richard Griffin...I want to express my gratitude to the Rabbis, community leaders and institutions who reached out to me to help enlighten me, instead of chastising me…I want to assure my Jewish friends, new and old, that this is only the beginning of my education—I am committed to deeper connections, more profound learning and strengthening the bond between our two cultures today and every day going forward.”

Nick has done this to save his hosting of Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” and his afternoon talk show coming from LionsGate. He’s deleted all the pro-Farrakhan videos from his YouTube channel, so that’s good. But I don’t know if that’s going to be enough to undo this mess. I’m certainly not interested in watching him host that talk show. I can’t believe anyone wants to see it now.

Ex Game Show Host Chuck Woolery Deletes Twitter Account After Admitting Son Diagnosed Postive with COVID-19

Chuck Woolery has taken his game show and gone home.

The former host of “Love Connection,” outspoken right winger and supporter of Donald Trump has deleted his Twitter account after losing a war on the social media site.

Earlier this week, Woolery tweeted that, essentially, everyone was lying about COVID 19, “The CDC, media, Democrats, our Doctors” were all lying to make sure Trump lost the election.

Trump immediately re-Tweeted Woolery’s Tweet, basically agreeing with him and throwing Dr. Fauci and every right thinking person under the bus.

Ah, but that wasn’t all. Because the next day Woolery backtracked. The reason? His son, he said, had tested positive for the virus. “Covid-19 is here and it is real,” he said, contradicting his entire prior Tweet. And his whole philosophy. I wrote about that tweet, and many people– including me– sent well wishes to his son.

But not Donald Trump. He never again commented on Woolery or cared what happened to his son. He was too busy blaming the Chinese, Hunter Biden, and a runaway bat for his problems. He fired Brad Parscale as his campaign manager.

A lot of Tweeters thought maybe Woolery’s account was suspended. But Twitter would have marked it as such. No, the account is gone. Chuck has lost the game. He did not make a Covid Connection after all. He goes home empty handed, with the consolation that he can still admit his stupidity and beg for forgiveness.

Donald Trump Demotes Campaign Manager Brad Parscale as Nothing Works, Everything Backfires, Poll Down to 36%

0

Donald Trump has demoted campaign manager Brad Parscale as his poll number has fallen to 36% acccording to Quinnipiac.

Parscale is out after botching the Tulsa Rally, Mt. Rushmore event, yesterday’s campaign speech aka “press conference,” the handling of the coronavirus, Black Lives Matter, and everything else he’s touched. Trump announced the change replacing Parscale with Bill Stepien on Facebook of course, because Twitter was down.

Trump really thinks his poll numbers are up, or is selling that lie to his base. But the base may be eroding as Trump kills the country, literally. The Quinnipiac folks wrote: “Independents are a key factor behind Biden’s widening lead as they now back him 51 – 34 percent, while in June, independents were split with 43 percent for Biden and 40 percent for Trump. There is also some movement among Republicans as they back Trump 84 – 9 percent, compared to 92 – 7 percent in June. Democrats go to Biden 91 – 5 percent, little changed from 93 – 4 percent in June.”

If we don’t vote Trump out on November 3rd, we will have no country. Our kids will have had their formative years robbed from them. More importantly, people my age– who are on the other side of the 50 fence and trying to get the most out of life– will have wasted important years. Being Republican with a lot of money doesn’t matter if you can’t enjoy it. And now with Trump’s presidency, you can’t. You are stuck at home. Even if you’re in a mansion with a tennis court, tell the truth, you had a great trip planned this summer, right? Thanks to Trump, you’ve lost a year of travel viability.

UPDATE KPop Boy Band BTS Gamed iTunes for a Day But Their All Japanese Album Has Already Sunk on the Charts

0

FRIDAY JULY 17TH: The album has dropped to 13 on iTunes. A raft of new releases that people actually want to hear have taken over. Better luck next time, BTS!

WEDS JULY 15TH Sorry KPoppers. You can’t beat “Hamilton.”

KPop boyband BTS has released an all-Japanese album, a version of the CD they released in February. And it went straight to number…2 on iTunes. Not number 1.

The “Hamilton” soundtrack has kept BTS fans from succeeding at their gaming of the iTunes chart. When a new BTS album comes out, the fans buy it and buy it to push it up the charts. They do it with singles tracks, too.

The new album is sung entirely in Japanese. Do you really think American teens have swooped it up, and for purchase? If you, then like the Vapors, you’re turning Japanese, I really think so.

Let’s get back to reality. The English version of this album has sold only 273,000 copies in the US since its release. Another 250K comes from streaming. That’s not nearly as much as any other hit act. But BTS seems big, usually for a week or less.

And notice, they didn’t go head to head with Friday’s new releases. They launched mid week. By Friday, the big surge will be over, unless it turns out that Japanese language market in the US is bigger than we thought. In that case, Clint Eastwood should try again with “Letters from Iwo Jima.”

Remembering Lifetime Oscar Recipient DA Pennebaker, Born 95 Years Ago Today, Always Alive in Our Hearts

0

Today DA Pennebaker (Oscar nominee, 1st ever documentary filmmaker to get an honorary Oscar) would have turned 95 years old. His massive, sprawling family would have gathered in Sag Harbor, Long Island for a big paella and lots of fun, and Penny would have glowed basking in their light. He didn’t grow up with a family. As he often told me, he couldn’t remember his parents ever being in the same room at the same time. So he had 8 kids from three wives and a lot of grandchildren, and so many friends and admirers he couldn’t count them.

He made it to his 94th birthday last July 15th, and I got to celebrate with him and his wife and filmmaking partner Chris Hegedus a few days later. Within two weeks he would pass away at the Sag Harbor house. It was startling because we all thought he’d live forever.

So I’m celebrating Penny’s birthday today. Knowing him for twenty years certainly changed my life. I was very lucky. What I’m remember today is a lot of laughing. Penny loved a good malapropism, a twisted memory of something that might have happened, or might not. He was old enough that it probably did but we always joked about a time when he said, in answer to something, “President McKinley said…” And we responded: “Penny, did you know President McKinley?” He’d pause and say: “I might have.”

The fact is he knew so many people from so many different walks of life. His films had taken him into politics, music, theater, all kinds of things. Think of this: he hung around the White House with Jack and Bobby Kennedy. Like it was normal. He made films about them. He hung around with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Donovan. And Janis Joplin, and Michelle and John Phillips. This week, Richard Brody writes, coincidentally, about Penny filming Stephen Sondheim recording the score to “Company” with Elaine Stritch. And it wasn’t just all these Mt. Rushmore types. He really liked David Bowie, and Depeche Mode, and the films of John Cameron Mitchell and the Coen brothers.

And he really loved Chris. Today she wrote on Facebook: “Missing my dear sweet rascal Penny on his birthday today. We had some amazing adventures together and he was so much damn fun!!”

She ran this little picture, that I thought was so cute and endearing. Look at him beaming.

So happy 95th Penny. I’m toasting you, and hoping you finally met President McKinley!

Tyra Banks Replaces Tom Bergeron as Host of “Dancing with the Stars” as ABC Gets All Multicultural and Diverse

0

Congrats to Tyra Banks. She’s the new host of “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC. She replaced Tom Bergeron, who was axed this week after hundreds of seasons.

Tyra is a star, she’s great, everyone loves her. But ABC could have handled this a lot better. In their mission to become all multicultural and diverse, they were pretty rude to Bergeron and Erin Andrews. But that’s the game in Hollywood. Every week is Shark Week.

Bergeron may have gotten the axe because he voiced unhappiness over having ex Trump press secretary, Lyin’ Sean Spicer, as a contestant. It’s a theory, but since Disney ABC chief Bob Iger loathes Trump, that doesn’t seem likely. It’s more that sensing a change in the culture, ABC decided to freshen up the look of the show. They just did it badly.

Are more changes coming to TV like this one? I would say yes. And a lot of them will be welcome. Bergeron will be fine. And Tyra will be a great success!
