Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” Turns 45 Today, Still in the Top 40 After Four and a Half Decades

0

Good pop never goes away.

Today in 1977 Fleetwood Mac released “Rumours.” It was the follow up to the “Fleetwood Mac” album of 1975, the first with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

That was 45 years ago today.

Last week, “Rumours” sold 15,900 copies and was in the top 40 on all albums charts. This week looks about the same.

“Dreams,” one of the singles from “Rumours” is still on the charts as well. Last year it went top 5 again thanks to a TikTok video.

The other singles from the album, “Go Your Own Way” and “Don’t Stop,” remain top hits on oldies radio. Worldwide, “Rumours” has sold 40 million copies, putting it not far behind “Thriller” and “The Eagles Greatest Hits.”

It was the pinnacle for the Mac, which subsequently released the much admired but lower selling “Tusk” and a couple more albums before breaking up and regrouping several times.

Me? I prefer the ’75 album. When “Rumours” was released in 1977, it was right in the middle of New Wave and punk. Fleetwood Mac was the epitome of corporate rock gone crazy. No album would equal its sales or importance in mainstream pop until Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall” in 1979.

But in ’77, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Blondie, the Ramones and Steely Dan’s “Aja” were far more interesting to me. And now, 45 years later, they’ve all lasted.

I guess the lesson is, Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.

Susan Sarandon Apologizes for Criticizing Police Funeral: “I realize how disrespectful and insensitive it was”

0

Susan Sarandon is apologizing for jumping the gun when she saw something on social media. She criticized the police funeral in New York for Officer Jason Rivera. I know Susan, and I know she is heartfelt in this apology. Let’s move on. But we can learn a lesson to count to a thousand before reacting and posting on social media.

“Moonfall” Shapes Up to Be $150 Mil Bust for Lions Gate with Rotten Reviews and Just $700K Preview Night

0

“Moonfall” made landfall last night.

The $150 mil sci-fi epic had a bad night: just $700,000 in 2,300 locations. The morbidly curious were the ticket buyers.

“Moonfall” will probably be a massive write off for Lions Gate. They expected it, believe me. They’ll be fine.

But for director Roland Emmerich, stars Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, Michael Pena it’s a space disaster.

For perspective, the latest “Jackass” movie made $1.65 million in previews– more than double “Moonfall.” But “Jackass” is made by idiots for idiots. “Moonfall” was supposed to be smart.

I’ve never seen reviews quite like the ones for “Moonfall.” The Emmerich film has 42 on Rotten Tomatoes. Even the “fresh” reviews mention that the movie is terrible but a lot of fun its awfulness. The Rotten Tomatoes editors themselves wrote under “Critics Consensus”: “Whether Moonfall is so bad it’s good or simply bad will depend on your tolerance for B-movie cheese — but either way, this is an Emmerich disaster thriller through and through.”

But you know, if you’ve seen “Spider Man” a few times and would like to see something new, “Moonfall” might be for you!

Denzel Denied BAFTA Nomination Again, Never Had One, Wants to Follow “Macbeth” Star Turn with “King Lear”

0

Denzel Washington has two Academy Awards and six more nominations. But he has never received one nomination from the British Academy.

He has not a single nomination from BAFTA. Not one. And yesterday he didn’t receive one again, this time for his Oscar worthy turn as the main character in “Macbeth.” Trust me, on Tuesday morning Denzel will be nominated for an Oscar again and there’s a good chance he will win.

But no BAFTA.

Luckily, he doesn’t hold everyone in the UK to blame for this insane oversight. In today’s Daily Mail, Washington speaks to London’s number 1 columnist, Baz Bamigboye. He tells Baz that he plans on starring in another Shakespeare play, “King Lear,” as soon as possible.

Denzel tells Baz: “That’s the good stuff. These are great parts — and the greatest challenge.” He said that playing the ageing, troubled king was “absolutely something I want to do.”

And that means a film, too. Denzel doesn’t say this, but I’m sure he would invite Viola Davis to play Lear’s daughter, Goneril. After all, she won an Oscar and a Tony under his direction in “Fences.”

In the meantime, Washington will next film the third “The Equalizer” movie, plus he’s got more August Wilson plays to film like “The Piano Lesson.”

Great interview, and terrific scoop!

“American Idol” Star Fantasia Chosen to Lead “The Color Purple” Movie Musical with Taraji P. Henson

0

In Hollywood terms, Fantasia should be over 50 years old by now. But she is only still just 37!

One the great underrated singers of our time, a winner of “American Idol,” Fantasia Barrino has been chosen to play Celie, the central character of “The Color Purple” in the movie musical version of Alice Walker’s famous book.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Fantasia. But it’s a little strange that Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony Award and has had an Oscar nomination, wasn’t selected to re-create her Broadway role.

“The Color Purple” musical had two lives on Broadway, which is unusual. The first time around it was kind of a mess, although it did play for two years beginning in 2005 with LaChanze in the main role. Then it was revived in 2015 in a totally revamped version with Erivo as Celie, Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery, and Danielle Brooks as Sofia.

This was all after the 1986 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Margaret Avery as Shug.

Now Fantasia will be Celie, Colman Domingo will play “Mister” (the Glover role), Taraji P. Henson will be Shug. Danielle Brooks will reprise her role as Sofia from the Broadway revival.

Maybe Erivo didn’t want to do it again. Who knows? Fantasia can sainnng, as they say. When she sang “Summertime” on “American Idol” in 2006, Simon Cowell almost lost it. Fantasia has been hard to launch as a pop star, her voice is too good and too unconventional for the soulless kind of R&B pandered to on radio now. But she’s a star, and this will cement her career. And she’s only 37!

Producers will be the gang from the movie– Oprah, Steven Spielberg, and Quincy Jones, plus Walker and her daughter. Corey Hawkins and H.E.R. will also be featured. Blitz Bazawule, whose main credit is the Beyoncé video “Black Is King,” is set to direct the fresh take on the musical. Marcus Gardley is the wirter of the screenplay, adapted from Marsha Norman’s book. Warner Bros. will be the releasing studio.

The songs are by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. Willis, sadly, has passed away in the interim. It will be up to Russell and Bray to write a new song so they can go for an Oscar nomination for Best Song.

Kudos to Fantasia! She must have had some great audition. But I’m not surprised.

and here’s a little gem you may not know, Sam Moore and Fantasia singing Diane Warren’s “Blame it on the Rain”

CNN: Jeff Zucker’s Big Problem Wasn’t His Girlfriend, It Was A Lack of Ratings Plain and Simple

0

On Wednesday, as most days, Fox News had five times as many viewers as CNN. That was the day Jeff Zucker was fired.

So far, the reasoning for his expulsion has been that he’d brought his mistress to CNN from NBC and kept promoting her. He did, all that’s true. But that had been going on since 2013. It wasn’t news to anyone inside CNN headquarters.

And Chris Cuomo? That didn’t help. Zucker was clearly covering for Chris and Andrew Cuomo on a lot of levels.

But Zucker had been portraayed recently as feeling very confident about his job since David Zaslav, a friend, the man who owns Discovery Networks, made a big to buy Warner Media from AT&T. Zaslav was going to protect Zucker said many media experts.

No one counted on one important problem while Zaslav’s deal was was going through. CNN has no ratings.

Since the 2020 election ended and took Donald Trump with it, CNN’s ratings have almost disappeared. Case in point: on Wednesday, the entire CNN evening menu of CNN Newsroom-Wolf Blitzer-Jake Tapper-Erin Burnett-Anderson Cooper-Don Lemon averaged about 600,000 viewers per hour. The numbers go up and down a little bit, but 600,000 is the baseline. In the morning, “New Day” hit at 480K. At 7pm, Burnett was the high water mark at 698,000.

And that’s it. CNN is a worldwide news organization that one is watching.

Adding insult to injury there’s Fox News. Reprehensible, purveyors of lies, dangerous, jaundiced, beneath tabloid journalism. Fox News. On Wednesday they had five times as many viewers. Five times. “The Five,” a group of jackals at 5pm, scored 3.8 million. Then came Bret Baier, probably inheritor of Chris Wallace’s Sunday show, with 2.8 million. Then comes Tucker Carlson-Sean Hannity- Laura Ingraham. They’re crazy and awful but they average 3.5 million viewers.

Ouch, right? And don’t forget, somewhere between them, but still far away from CNN, MSNBC comes in between 1 and 2 million. Rachel Maddow’s big ratings run when Trump was under fire is over and she knows it. She’s taking time off to make a movie. But the rest of the MSNBC gang– Ari Melber, Joy Reid, Lawrence O’Donnell– is still outdrawing CNN.

Today, the Wall Street Journal and some other outlets described Zucker as “beloved”  among the CNN staff. It seems hard to believe, but maybe he was. But he was also lazy. CNN has gone to the dogs. No one is watching it. If Zucker’s ratings had been competitive with anyone besides the Weather Channel or Nickelodeon Jr., it’s possible that his years- long open secret relationship wouldn’t have mattered. Without viewers, Zucker had no leverage.

Does CNN turn out a quality product? Absolutely, and it’s trusted around the world during a news crisis. But on a daily hour by hour basis? The clowns are winning.

Grammy Whammy: No Clive Davis Gala This Year Thanks to COVID and Change to Las Vegas

0

EXCLUSIVE Alas, there will be no pre-Grammy gala dinner this year hosted by Clive Davis. Fear not Clive is fine. But between COVID in Los Angeles, a booked Beverly Hilton, and no proper venue available in Las Vegas, everyone involved has deferred to good sense.

Here’s the official statement from Clive Davis and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason:

“Due to the logistical obstacles caused by the ongoing pandemic, including the unavailability of an appropriate venue, we have decided to postpone the 2022 Pre-Grammy Gala. We will resume the celebration next year when we will host an incredible evening in our unique and glittering way, hospitable to our wonderful music artists, music executives, film, television, sports and illustrious politicians who annually love the event like no other.  As previously announced, other GRAMMY week activities will be held in Las Vegas and the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards will continue its tradition as Music’s Biggest Night on April 3 from the MGM Garden Arena.”

The sound you are hearing is weeping from the guests, the musicians, the movie stars, the rock stars, and the caterers. Clive’s dinner is the best night of the year, but we have to be brave. The party will return next year.

So this makes Musicares honoring Joni Mitchell, set for April 1st, an even hotter ticket. And the Grammys themselves, as well, on CBS April 3rd.

4PM UPDATE

Facebook was much worse– closed -26.4%, down 85.24 from from 323 to 237. Triple yikes.

The Dow Jones was down 518.17 or 1.45%.

Not a great day is an understatement.

EARLIER

Spotify is not recovering from its Joe Rogan problem.

Stock price is down 40 bucks today or roughly 20 percent. Over night the stock went off a cliff has just kept sinking.

Yesterday’s closing price was $191.92. Today SPOT opened at $164 and it’s currently at the day’s low of $158.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and especially Young have removed or are removing their music from the site. Joni Mitchell, India Arie, and others are jumping in. Rosanna Arquette is removing her celebrity-politics podcast. These are brand names that are hurting Spotify. More rats may desert the ship this week.

Keep refreshing for a stock update at 4pm.

Box Office: Dreaded Space Epic $150 Million “Moonfall” Starts Tonight, “One of the Worst Movies Ever Made”

0

The reviews for Roland Emmerich’s “Moonfall” are coming in now, and they are not pretty.

I wasn’t able to make last night’s all media press screening, but sources from both coasts mentioned the phrase “one of the worst movies ever made” several times.

On Rotten Tomatoes, things are shaping up the same way. Even the two reviewers who labeled it “fresh” went on to mock the movie. With 8 reviews, the current rating is 25%.

“Moonfall” cost at least $150 million for Emmerich, his producers, and Lions Gate. It stars Patrick Wilson, Halle Berry, and Michael Pena. Wilson and Pena are nice guys, but not exactly box office draws. Berry is an Oscar winner, but this is not her finest moment, I am told. The thinking is she needed a payday movie to underwrite her indie film, “Bruised.” No one can blame her.

Emmerich is famous for making big budget disasters. He made one great movie, “Independence Day,” back in 1996. It was well reviewed and incredibly popular. I loved it. Who didn’t? But that seemed to give him clearance to make terrible, big budget critical flops one after another. His trash heap includes the highly laughable “The Day After Tomorrow,” “2012,” and “Stonewall” (a movie I actually don’t even remember).

Who knows? “Moonfall” could turn out to be a surprise hit. But with COVID still hanging around, and a gigantic winter storm coming through for Thursday night and Friday, disaster looms large.

Come back later for a look at the reviews.

Ratings Giant “Yellowstone” Renewed for 5th Season, Will Fit in Production Before Costner’s New Movie

0

Not a surprise, but “Yellowstone” will get a fifth season.

The ratings giant has been renewed by Paramount TV just in time. Star Kevin Costner just announced he’s shooting a movie called “Horizon” beginning in late August. This is Costner’s big comeback as a film director and movie star, and he’s basing it on the popularity of “Yellowstone.”

Pre-production on “Horizon” will in full sway when “Yellowstone” starts shooting again. The TV series will have to be right on time to make Costner’s “Horizon” start date. Right now “Horizon” is listed as independent film. But it wouldn’t be a shock if Paramount got involved.

For season 5, guest stars Jen Landon and Kathryn Kelly have been upped to regular status. Landon is the daughter of late great “Bonanza” actor Michael Landon. She was a big hit in her late teens on “As the World Turns,” so it’s a nice moment for her to be be on unarguably TV’s biggest series.
