At Critics Choice Awards, “Borat” Star Maria Bakalova Teases a Sequel to the Sequel

0

I never really got to tell the story of the Critics Choice Awards, the best awards show of this season. Yes, it was last Sunday night but right now Academy voters are filling out ballots for the Oscars. The Critics Choice was the last bellwether.

“Power of the Dog” won Best Picture, but “Belfast” won Best Ensemble, a fact that shouldn’t be lost on Oscar voters. While Jane Campion has sewn up Best Director, Best Picture still rests on what has claimed the voters’ hearts. “Belfast” and even “CODA” remain strong adversaries.

The Critics Choice show managed to rack up 1.5 million viewers, which doesn’t seem like much but think of it: most of these, a million, were on the CW Network. Imagine what the CCAs could do on CBS, where they belong. Running on the CW and TBS, the CCAs equaled their 202o numbers, the show that occurred weeks before the pandemic stopped our lives.

This year the awards were held at the Fairmont Century Plaza, newly rebuilt from top to bottom replacing what seemed like the centuries old building that used to stand on Avenue of the Stars. The old Century Plaza was used for everything, and it felt that way. Like the Critics Choice, it is now new and shiny, designed for warmth and humanity. The CCAs fit right in there.

This is the only televised awards at which movie and TV critics sit with the casts of shows and films, and are not relegated to a back room. I was lucky: my table was with Kristen Wiig and her very funny movie, “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” Wiig, known best for “Bridesmaids” and “SNL,” was totally charming in her black pixie haircut. We talked about the “SNL” she hosted from home in May 2020, her Mother’s Day monologue, was which kind of brilliant.

Around the room I got to talk to Will Smith.  He told me he couldn’t believe how well “King Richard” has worked out and that he understood Richard Williams even more now. He was kind of glowing in the presence of Serena and Venus. He said he’d said he’d spent a lot of time with them. I asked, but had he played tennis with them at all? Will blushed. “Not really…” he said, trailing off.

I was thrilled to run into Carey Mulligan, who’s moving with her family to New York to play Leonard Bernstein’s wife, Felicia, in his biopic directed by (and starring) Bradley Cooper. Carey is a breath of fresh air at any event, but she had some more good news: Mumford & Sons is recording a new album right now. How does she know? Her husband is Marcus Mumford. Their album was released in November 2018.

But the most tantalizing scoop of the night: Maria Bakalova, aka Tutar from “Borat: Subsequent Film,” teased a possible subsequent subsequent film. Does that mean a sequel? Listen to this: Maria, who was found in Bulgaria, is now an L.A. actress. She’s beautiful and well spoken, far beyond the hilarious and sad Tutar. She’s got four projects going on now. When I lamented that we might never see Tutar again, Maria replied: “You never know…” A “Borat” sequel, I wondered? “Never say never,” said Maria.

Indeed, Sacha Baron Cohen has been very quiet lately. That’s always a good sign. Cohen’s frequent collaborator, Anthony Hines, I’m told has a terrific film coming called “Robots.” But Cohen is too, too quiet.

PS Best couple of the night: Joshua Jackson, a nominee for “Dr. Death,” and wife Jodie Turner Smith, who was so outstanding in “Queen & Slim.” They met backstage at an awards show, they told me, and it was love at first sight. (I always knew Josh was smart, we share a birthday.) Cheers to them!

LEAH SYDNEY REPORTS FROM THE CCAs:

Rita Moreno telling Andrew Garfield, you are absolutely adorable. Andrew telling her that she was the most “elegant, gorgeous lady in the room” …Guillermo Del Toro and his lovely wife, and fellow “Nightmare Alley” screenwriter Kim Morgan being gracious to all. Kristen Stewart only had eyes for her fiancée, Dylan Meyer.  The women were trying to be as low key as possible, sitting and talking to each other and their table mates. Kristen was saying hello to those she knew, though. …

When I told Jada Pinkett Smith that I really liked her mom, Adrienne, on her successful show “Red Table Talk” (on Facebook, YouTube, etc.) her daughter Willow is on as well, he replied, “You know I hear that a lot.  My Mom tells it like it is.”  Her husband Will, who won for Best Actor, taking pics with all the eager critics from across the country.  Speaking about Jada, did indeed look regal in her headpiece of diamonds, which I found out has 53 diamonds and cost $46.250.

Melanie Lynskey, who truly did not believe she was going to win before the show when we chatted, did indeed win for her turn in “Yellowjackets.” She had the crowd in the palm of her hand when she thanked Producers for “not asking her to change anything about herself.”  Melanie, a real sized woman and a New Zealand native, is married to the equally down to earth Jason Ritter.

Kieran Culkin, who went on to win for Best Supporting Actor for “Succession,” was joking around with Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox at their table, putting all the supposed strife rumors to rest.  Lots of champagne at that table.  Lin Manuel Miranda and Kristen Chenoweth loving up on each other.  Hallie Berry did inspire the crowd, including Marlee Matlin, who pumped her fists in agreement, with her take no prisoners acceptance speech for the #SeeHer Award…

Christian Slater, Michael Keaton chatting together.  The series-ending “This Is Us” table, was having their moment as this was their last CCA show.  Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown and more were just kicking back.

The shining star of the night goes to Jude Hill from “Belfast.”  He was living the dream all night, with his sidekick and co-star Jamie Dornan by his side.  Jude was acting like a pro, even though “Belfast” was his first acting job ever.  When he won as Best Young Actor and thanked “his fellow actor” the iconic Judi Dench, well that garnered the biggest laugh of the night.

“Belfast” Wins AARP Movies for Grown Ups, Surprisingly Putting a Leash on “Power of the Dog”

0

“Belfast” won the AARP Movies for Grown Ups Awards tonight in an under-publicized presentation.

Director Kenneth Branagh and star Judi Dench accepted the award in a pretaped message. Unlike in previous years, the AARP Awards was without an audience and obviously the winners knew in advance they’d been selected.

But it was a surprise that “Belfast” beat “The Power of the Dog” and “CODA.” Could it be an Oscar precursor?

Who else won? Who knows? For some reason, the rest of the show has been kept a secret. Nary a press release has been issued since January. But I think Will Smith took Best Actor. Keep refreshing for more info…

Box Office: Sony Worldwide Anime Hit “Jujutsu” Scores Huge $2.8 Mil in Thursday Previews

0

Ever hear of Crunchyroll? I thought it was something you ate.

They’re an anime production company, formerly called Funimation. Sony bought them a few years ago from Warner Media for a little under a billion dollars.

Now Crunchyroll has the number 2 movie in America. Last night “Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie” made $2.8 million in previews and finished second only to “The Batman.” The anime film debuted in roughly the same number of theaters as A24’s horror him, “X,” which only made $440,000.

“Jujutsu” is already an international hit. It’s made $100 million around the globe. Now it’s come for us!

Just so we have all this straight, the film is directed by Seong-Hu Park and written by Hiroshi Seko. And they are very happy, whoever they are!

What Does Laurie Metcalf Know That We Don’t? “The Conners” Star Takes a Job on HBO’s “Hacks”

0

Laurie Metcalf may know something we don’t.

Waiting for ABC’s “The Conners” to be renewed for a fifth season, the Tony Award winning actress has taken a recurring role on HBO’s hit show, “Hacks.”

“Hacks” stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbeinder. It was nominated for 3 Emmy Awards last year. Smart won, and she just won the Critics Choice Award. So did the series. “Hacks” is on roll as the best new comedy of the last year.

“The Conners” is draining out to an end either this year or next. Metcalf has played Aunt Jackie since “Roseanne” began a hundred years ago. She’s also won not one but two Tony Awards and has been nominated for an Oscar. She’s a consummate actress. But on “The Conners” she’s made to act foolish. it’s a payday.

If “The Conners” is renewed, new shows will begin in the fall. This will be right after or during “Hacks” second season. Metcalf — who also has 3 Emmy Awards and several more nominations — could be on two shows simultaneously. And on different networks. Of course, other network actors have taken jobs on prestigious cable shows, but this seems like an eye roller. If Metcalf has time for “Hacks,” what is that saying about Aunt Jackie?

Other guest stars named for season 2 of “Hacks” are Margaret Cho, Ming-Na Wen, and a relative newcomer named Martha Kelly.

PS A sharp eyed Twitter reader points out that Goodman is featured on HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones.” So maybe they all know something!

Media Hail Mary: Rolling Stone Is At the Point of Ranking the Top 100 Songs from KPop Band BTS

0

Rolling Stone: they’re still doing very good investigative journalism. But their music side is suffering.

Today they released their list of Top 100 Songs by BTS. LOL.

You may be asking yourself first, what is BTS? And second, they have 100 songs?

BTS is the Korean boy band that has a massive following in Korea and other parts of the world. In the US the reaction is more muted. But recently they’ve had a couple of English language hits called “Butter” and “Dynamite.” Their songs are interchangeable, as are their members.

But Rolling Stone, like all of us, is phishing for traffic. The website publishes a lot of Best 100 whatever lists to rile up readers– Best Songs, Best Singers, Best Albums. They figure even if people hate- read these things, they’re reading.

No one expects Rolling Stone to be the music bible it was in the 70s. But still, BTS? (I say it stands for Buy This Soon.)

They chose a five year old BTS song called “Spring Day” as their number 1 of the all the BTS “classics.” God bless. I’ve never heard of it and neither have you. I’m sure BTS followers will be debating these choices all weekend. And I’m sure the next Best 100 songs of the 2000s will feature a lot of these unmemorable pop gems.

PS I hope the traffic is good for RollingStone.com. That’s the whole point!

Thursday Ratings: NBC Trounces CBS with “Law & Order” Block Over “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Station 19”

0

NBC may not have hit comedies but they have outplayed ABC with Dick Wolf shows.

Last night, “Law & Order SVU” crunched “Grey’s Anatomy” handily. “SVU” brought in 4.53 million, widening the gap over “Grey’s Anatomy.” The Shondaland veteran had 1 million fewer eyes.

The difference between “SVU” and “Grey’s” is easy to see: the former stays fresh while the latter has collapsed under the weight of fan favorites being dismissed to make room for Ellen Pompeo’s salary and ego.

“SVU” is now the linchpin in a Thursday night that beats ABC right through the night. The revived “L&O” at 8pm takes “Station 19” and it’s brand new. At 10pm, “Organized Crime” is improving. But it doesn’t take much to beat “Blue Big Sky,” a show no one watches while awake. (I couldn’t even remember its actual name.)

CBS had no new shows last night because of March Madness. But the real madness must be at Shondaland where they’re probably wracking their brains trying to figure out if Patrick Dempsey can come back as his twin brother.

“Yellowstone” Back at Number 1 in DVD Sales, So NBC is Plotting Knock Off California Ranch Drama

0

“Yellowstone” fans have ramped up interest in their show– they must be missing it a lot.

Last week, “Yellowstone” Season 4 re-took the top spot on the home video sales chart. Released last November, Season 4 was number 1 among mostly movies for a week. It returned on January 22nd, then dropped down the chart. Now it’s back on top.

“Yellowstone” is such a hit that the knock offs are coming. NBC is filming a pilot called “Unbroken” starring Scott Bakula. The show will feature “three dynastic ranch families on the central coast of California [that] make love and war in a passionate struggle to survive, ultimately setting the stage for a group of fiercely determined young women to win big for all at the National Championship of Rodeo.”

Yee-hah!

I’m actually surprised there aren’t more contemporary westerns coming a la “Yellowstone.” This one apparently integrates a winery a la “Falcon Crest.” The problem is none of these will ever be as good as the Lorimar series of the 80s– “Dallas,” “Knots Landing,” and “Falcon Crest.” Michael Filerman, Leonard Katzman, and David Jacobs knew what they were doing when it came to pacing and characters.

Steve Martin, Original Cast of “SCTV” Among Dozens of Stars Set for YouTube Ukraine TV Telethon

Ukraine meet You Tube.

Next Saturday March 26th, dozens of stars will participate in a 10 hour telethon to benefit the war torn country.

“Stars in the House for Ukraine” will air live on Saturday, March 26th from 12:00pm ET – 10:00pm ET. It can be viewed and listened to on starsinthehouse.com, Stars In The House YouTube channel, as well as SiriusXM Stars109.

Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley will host the telethon to raise money and awareness for those affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine. Donations of the event will benefit the International Rescue Committee and their humanitarian efforts for those affected by the war in Ukraine.

The star-studded lineup of guests include original SCTV cast members Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin, plus Steve Martin, Annette Bening, Billy Porter, Audra McDonald, Cynthia Nixon, Laurie Metcalf, Norman Lear, and a knock out list of Broadway and TV  stars including Tituss Burgess, Kristin Chenoweth, David Hyde Pierce, Kelli O’Hara, Robin de Jesús, Donna Murphy, Annaleigh Ashford, Jessie Mueller, Josh Groban, Judith Light, John Stamos, Lindsay Mendez, Laura Benanti, Norman Lear, Betty Buckley, Rosie Perez, Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody, Rachel Bloom, and Patrick Wilson.

“For almost 90 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has been responding to the world’s worst humanitarian crises. In Ukraine and Poland, IRC mobilized quickly to assist the vulnerable and displaced by war that privileges impunity and autocracy over accountability and self-determination,” says David Miliband, President and CEO of IRC. “We are grateful to James, Seth, and everyone who will be joining this special 10-hour Stars in the House marathon to draw attention to the needs of those affected by the war in Ukraine, and to give audiences around the world a way to help.”

Review: Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum Make “The Lost City” Not Nearly as Formulaic As It Might Have Been

0

We’ve seen “The Lost City” before, unless you’re born yesterday or a shut in. It’s a lite version of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” a cousin of “Romancing the Stone” and about a dozen others that have come before.

So let’s set the premise aside. There are so many leaps of faith and logic you have to make, you might as well. The set up is that Sandra Bullock is Loretta Sage (yikes), a romance writer but a brainy one. Her books are hits. Channing Tatum’s Alan’s whole career is, improbably, posing on her book covers like Fabio, shirtless with a long wig. Da’Vine Joy Randolph is Loretta’s patient, all knowing publisher. Loretta seems to be her only author. (Makes no sense, must be a tiny mom and pop book company like Harlequin in the early days.)

Anyway, Daniel Radcliffe is sort of Roman Roy or a dumb Murdoch billionaire kid who kidnaps Loretta. He believes material in her book is real and will lead him to a lost city on an island in the Atlantic. So off they go to the island, and Alan follows them to rescue Loretta. He brings along a kind of adventurer named Trainer played by Brad Pitt, who’s going to help him in this effort.

That’s all you need to know. Pitt leaves the scene very soon after being introduced which is too bad. There’s a little hope for something really good when he’s on screen. After he’s gone, Bullock and Tatum are sent in a formula deal where they spar and don’t get along but eventually fall for each other.

The charm of the main stars goes a long way to distract from the well traveled plot and the disarmingly bad dialogue. Four people worked on the screenplay– the sibling directors Adam and Aaron Nee, and Dana Fox and Oren Uziel. Someone obviously wanted this to be glib and “Deadpool”-like. And someone obviously didn’t. So these two tones are at war with each other. Sometimes the script is meta and inside, and sometimes it feels cut and pasted from the 1980s.

The production design is excellent, and so are the bodies of the stars, which are perfect. Sandra Bullock was born the year the Beatles came to America, and she is ravishing. She has an Oscar and can take any project, but I wish she’d get some better material (better than “Bird Box” or “The Unforgivable, her two most recent movies. She says she’s taking a break, but I hope she’s not gone too long. She needs to play an adult and not a ditzy 57 year old.

Channing Tatum has been to the gym. We get that. He’s really put in his time, I guess, because he’s got another Magic Mike movie coming. A hunk in this one, he’s really playing Lou Costello. He gets a lot of credit for this. Especially when Pitt is on the scene, Tatum has to play a lovable fool. He pulls it off with aplomb.

There are worse things than a little familiar entertainment supplied by old friends. So I’m going to look the other way with “The Lost City.” Grab the popcorn and diet soda, kick back in a theater, and enjoy it for what it is. There are previews on Saturday night and a hard opening next week.

ABC Wednesday Night Comedy Dilemma: Which Low Rated Family Is Done, the Conners or the Goldbergs?

0

Wednesday night’s comedy block on ABC was the usual ratings disaster. All the shows performed miserably, and ABC finished in fourth place behind Fox.

Behind Fox!

The big question everyone is waiting to hear about is which of the low rated families will get the axe: The Conners or the Goldbergs?

My guess is, The Goldbergs. They fell well under  3 million viewers this week to 2.79 mil. Jeff Garlin is gone and all the pretending in the world hasn’t worked to make Murray Goldberg’s absence make sense. The show is not funny and not well acted or written. After 9 seasons, “The Goldbergs” are ready to say so long.

“The Conners” has one more season left to it. They finished last with 2.9 million, down 10.5% from the prior outing. At least they have stars like Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman. They also have a chance to wrap up the Conners’ saga once and for all with a fifth final season. The writers can give everyone a happy ending.

This seems like the way to go, but knowing network executives, they’ll do something else entirely. ABC also has to deal with their two other comedy half hours on Wednesday, the Black “Wonder Years” and Home Economics. Each one scores less than 2 million viewers although I am partial to “The Wonder Years.” I hope it continues.
