Exclusive: “Top Gun: Maverick” Features a Scene Between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer “That Will Make You Cry”

On the ground here in Hollywood, living the dream…

Lot of talk about “Top Gun: Maverick,” the long awaited sequel to a movie from the 1980s.

Sources tell me that there is a scene between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer “that will make you cry,” I was warned. Kilmer has survived throat cancer but cannot speak. Nevertheless, he was included in “Maverick” to replay his character from the original film, “Iceman” aka Lt. Tom Kazansky.

The whole has apparently seen the movie at least a year ago. They’ve since waited and waited for the release thanks to pandemic delays.

I asked about the Lady Gaga theme song that plays in the middle of the movie. In the original “Top Gun,” the big song was “Take My Breath Away,” a record you can’t get away from even now on oldies radio.

Said my spy, a little cryptically: “The song is good, but some of us felt it comes in the wrong place in the movie. By the time it plays, the point it’s supposed to make has already been made.”

Well, I’m up for a Lady Gaga song at any time in the movie, in any movie. So we’ll have to wait and see. “Maverick” will unfurl at the Cannes Film Festival in mid May and open two weeks later in June around the world.

And Now, to the Oscars Most Pressing Questions: Who Will Win? Who Will Lose? Who Will Watch?

0

The night– or here in LA, the afternoon — of the season is here at last.

The Oscars: who will win? who will lose? who will watch?

Will Apple become the first streaming service to win Best Picture, with “CODA”? Will “CODA” be the first acronym film since “MASH” to pick up a lot of awards?

Will anyone explain the ending of “The Power of the Dog” to the audience?

Will Netflix’s tenacious campaigning finally yield a winner?

So many questions!

Maybe the biggest one is Who will win Best Actress? For months Nicole Kidman was in the lead with “Being the Ricardos.” Then the focus switched to Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker. In the last two weeks suddenly there is a flurry of interest in Penelope Cruz from “Parallel Mothers,” a movie shabbily treated by the Spanish film board– they didn’t submit it for nomination!

Plus, there are the internal controversies with the Oscars, particularly the non televised “Golden Hour” that the TV audience — and the press– won’t see. Eight categories will be given awards, but everyone will have to wait until the show begins on ABC to learn the winners.

The show will look different, more like the Golden Globes, with nominees seated at tables in the front rows instead of theater seats. How will that go over? And will Adele appear to present, sing, or just stay home? Her Las Vegas fans will be paying attention to that one.

So we wait…and see.. and wait for the ratings tomorrow, which are sure to launch a thousand protests that the End has come.

Me? I’ll be asking myself, Was it worth all the stress and money and exhaustion, and to miss the opening night on Broadway of “Plaza Suite”? Well, at least I know I’m COVID negative. I’ve had three tests in two days!

Nicole Kidman Wows at Annual Armani Oscar Party, Sophia Loren Chooses Designer Event Over Chanel, Saint Laurent

0

So many parties, so few stars, and almost no nominees.

But the party at the newly renovated Giorgio Armani store on Rodeo Drive literally stopped traffic last night.

The event was billed as a top liner for Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman, who was radiant. And Kidman was especially pleased to see her “Rabbit Hole” star from a few years ago, Miles Teller, who’s about to play “Godfather” producer Al Ruddy in the Paramount Plus mini series, “The Offer.” Teller his beautiful wife, Keleigh.

There were a lot of other familiar faces in the party. But when Roberta Armani, the designer’s daughter, went to the front entrance she returned with actual royalty: Sophia Loren, with her son director Eduardo Ponti. By then Nicole had proceeded through the room, so that she and Loren were holding down opposite corners.  The room had what they call “buzz.” Like crazy.

Media mogul Byron Allen was there with his elegant mother, decked out in Armani head to toe. Actor Colman Domingo from “The Walking Dead’ and about 15 other projects was on hand, as was “Dopesick” creator Danny Strong. Young Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James and star of “The Many Saints of Newark” told me about all the projects he was involved with. LA socialites like Kathy Hilton, Nikki Haskell, and Marjorie Gubelman were in attendance.

And then were was “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve, who told me “Dune Part 2″ is already in production. I asked about Zendaya, who appeared just toward the end of ‘”Part 1.” Denis assured me, “There will be plenty of Zendaya in Part 2.” He also said he was knocked out watching the young actress in “Euphoria.”

Sebastian Stan — our Bucky from the Marvel universe– waited to talk to Nicole. I told her, “Don’t get too close, he’ll take a bite out of you.” I was referring to his Hulu movie, “Fresh.” But Sebastian exhibited no dining interest in Kidman.

Sophia Loren– as of yesterday afternoon, she said she was not attending the Oscars. She received compliments for her 2019 movie, “The Life Ahead,” and allowed a few people to have pictures taken with her. She is 87 and more beautiful than ever. The fact that she chose Armani over parties given by Chanel and other designers speaks volumes, I think. Loren is the ultimo classico!

PS Just so you know Armani is not just for the seniors, coming in as we were leaving was “Borat” star Maria Bakalova, who’s taken to the red carpet very nicely. Designer Zac Posen was there, too, with lots of young stars.

Vanity Fair’s Oscar Parties This Week So Far Yielded No Stars: Will Tonight Be Any Different?

0

Poor Vanity Fair.

The ailing celebrity magazine hosted two big advertiser parties this week in Hollywood. One was paid for by Lancome, the other by Bacardi.

The parties yielded few recognizable names. Just Kate Beckinsale, Alana Haim, and Diplo. Amanda Seyfried and Jenna Dewan attended one of them.

WireImage has over 1,000 pictures from the parties and no A listers. A lot of B listers, nice people, but nothing like real Stars.

Will it be any different tonight when Vanity Fair hosts a party after the Academy Awards? The magazine has erected a huge edifice on Santa Monica Boulevard and hopes to pull in a crowd like they did in the old days when Graydon Carter was editor.

But that ship has sailed. Most of the Oscar winners will stop by for a photo op and leave. The people who will stick around will be TV stars. The movie stars will go to Elton John, or to private dinners, or to manager Guy Oseary and Madonna’s party.

Some people will go to Jay Z and Beyonce’s party at Chateau Marmont. But Black Hollywood is protesting that party over recent allegations at the hotel. So that should be a lot of fun.

So stay tuned for the aftermath of Vanity Fair. One celebrity who won’t be there will be Lin Manuel Miranda, whose wife tested positive for COVID. The couple is skipping the Oscars altogether, and will be missed.

POW! Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum Clobber “The Batman” with $11.5 Mil Opening

0

“The Batman” stood down last night.

On its opening night, “The Lost City” took in $9.5 million and trounced the Caped Crusader in his third week of release.

With previews, the Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum romantic adventure raked in $11.5 million for an opening night. “The Batman” drew just $5.5 million on Friday bringing its total to a not shabby $317 million.

“The Lost City” is a marketing and casting triumph. As a film, it’s a B+ at best, comfort food at a time when audiences need it badly. Bullock and Tatum are charming, and the story resonates with the whole genre established 40 years ago by “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

But the marketing: the TV commercials of Sandy pulling leeches off the naked backside of Channing, and all the innuendo, etc delivered in junket interviews has worked just enough to get the public’s backsides into seats. And that’s all that matters!

“The Batman” will pick up another $10 million today and tomorrow. But it will have a long slog to $400 million. It’s still a massive success.

Rumor Has It: Adele May Be Making An Appearance on the Oscars Sunday Night, Maybe for James Bond Tribute

0

Is it true? Is this best kept secret in Hollywood?

Rumor has it is the name of an Adele song. And rumors about Adele are always rampant. But the one circulating among the cogniscenti Friday night was that the powerhouse best selling singer will make an appearance on the Oscars Sunday night.

First I was told she would sing Van Morrison’s nominated song, “Down to Joy.” Morrison’s negotiations with the Academy fell through he decided to stay on his European tour.

There was also some speculation that Adele would sing one of her own songs for the In Memoriam segment. If she did, a lot of the people featured might come back just to hear her.

The other segment that could fine Adele warbling would be the 60th anniversary tribute to James Bond.

Adele has been pursued by the Grammy Awards to come to Las Vegas for the April 3rd show. But she’s reluctant to shoot her Grammy shot now since the “30” album is eligible for 2023.

Adele last appeared at the Oscars when she sang “Skyfall,” her James Bond theme that went on to win Best Song.

Ordinarily I wouldn’t give you a rumor but this one swirled around Friday night like a cyclone. If it’s not true, or Adele just shows up to present something and doesn’t sing, don’t blame me! But what a ‘get’ that would be for ABC and the Motion Picture Academy — even better than President Zelensky of Ukraine.

Oscars Give Lifetime Achievement Award to Elaine May, She Only Agreed to Come at the Very Last Minute

0

I was shocked when I heard Elaine May turned up at the Governor’s Awards, the Oscars version of Lifetime Achievement on Friday night.

She looked great on the New York Times’s Kyle Buchanan’s Twitter feed. She even cracked that she’d been promised “Zelensky” — the president of Ukraine — was going to give her the award. Instead she had to settle for Bill Murray.

My shock was because all day Friday I heard from people in the great director and writer’s camp that she was absolutely not going to the ceremony.

Even though Elaine had gone to Los Angeles, she had nixed the plan to actually attend the Governor’s Awards.

Within seconds of her arrival at the Hollywood and Highland center, I received an email: “Bill Murray persuaded her to go. I don’t know how it happened.” By all accounts, May was the last to arrive and the first to leave. She didn’t walk the red carpet, and didn’t remain long enough to be in a group picture with the other honorees.

Elaine was feted along with Samuel L. Jackson, Danny Glover, and Liv Ullman. The Governor’s Awards are usually held in November, but this year they were delayed because of the Omicron COVID spike.

So congrats to Elaine, and everyone is glad she changed her mind. The 90 year old was comedy partners with Mike Nichols  in the late 50s and early 60s, became a doctor on screenplays, then directed such hits as “The Heartbreak Kid” and “A New Leaf.” Her list of credits is endless. She also won a Tony Award just three years ago for “The Waverly Gallery.”

WIll “The Goldbergs” Keep Pretending Murray Is Around, Or Kill Off Their Main Character, If the Show is Renewed?

0

Deadline.com is reporting that “The Goldbergs” star Wendi McClendon-Covey has signed a new deal with ABC TV.

The report suggests that this is an indication “The Goldbergs” will be renewed for a 10th season.

The show is fairly low rated, but ABC has nothing to replace it. Still, they have a problem.

As I reported a couple of weeks ago, “The Goldbergs” has been pretending since January that Jeff Garlin’s character, Murray, is somewhere around but on screen. The show uses a stand in for him to pretend that Murray is still in the family.

But Garlin left “The Goldbergs” a few months ago after complaints to HR that he used bad language on the set. Imagine that. Garlin is a comedian and star of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” But in this new pristine environment, his Borscht  Belt ways didn’t go over.

“The Goldbergs” will have to kill off Murray if they’re coming back for Season 10. Getting rid of Garlin won’t be easy. The show already lost the great George Segal to actual death last year.

The sitcom is relatively uninteresting as it stands now. It’s like white noise. It’s like other ABC comedies of the recent past– see “The Middle” — that you’re surprised to discover are still on the air!

Exclusive: Oscar Nominees, Guests, Presenters Will Wear Blue Ribbons in Support of Refugees Around the World

0

Oscars go blue.

With the situation in  Ukraine being front and center, look for numerous celebrities, nominees, presenters and industry professionals to be wearing a blue ribbon with the hashtag #withrefugees.

The ribbons are distributed by the UN Refugee Agency, who have put together this campaign for the celebrities and more to wear the Blue ribbon with hashtag #withrefugees in solidarity with ALL people forced to flee oppression.

Anadil Hossain, who is the Principal Communications Advisor for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the UN refugee agency launched this initiate with help from Bonnie Abaunza.  Hossain notes that “This notes that “This year’s Oscar nominated films include some powerful stories centered on the themes of refugees, displacement, home and belonging —  Encanto, Flee, Three Songs for Benazir, Belfast and Dune —  at a time when the world is witnessing the largest refugee crisis since WW2. Artists have been wanting to show their solidarity for Ukraine and we wanted to ask them to extend this support to the almost 84 million people forced to flee. Whenever. Wherever.  While the ribbons are a symbolic visible gesture, we saw this an opportunity to message around a wider understanding and awareness of this global humanitarian crisis – as the nominated films this year have done with great imagination and empathy.”

Good for the UNHCR and Hollywood for supporting such worthy cause.

“Spider Man” and “Ted Lasso” Win Publicists Award, Francis Ford Coppola Gets Lifetime Achievement Honor

0

The ICG Publicists Awards luncheon was one of the best I’ve ever been to this afternoon.

“The Godfather” director, Francis Ford Coppola, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. I was told Coppola would get his award and leave the Beverly Hilton quickly, but he stayed through the whole luncheon and had a pretty good time.

I asked him about the mini-series, “The Offer,” but he hasn’t seen it yet. “The Offer” tells producer Al Ruddy’s story of how “The Godfather” was made. Coppola tells me he hasn’t seen the series yet. He said “Everyone says they had something to do with the making of The Godfather. Al Ruddy wasn’t on set much because he was out there making deals and saving the picture.”

The Publicists Guild is a unique event because you get to see a lot of people you like some you don’t. The publicists get to see a few press people they’d rather forget existed. It’s very convivial.

This year the winner of the best movie campaign went to “Spider Man: No Way Home.” The TV award went to “Ted Lasso.” Both teams deserve the win, they did amazing jobs.

The Les Mason Award, the highest honor the publicists can bestow on one of its own members, resulted in a tie and was presented to both Sheryl Main and David Waldman (EVP Domestic Publicity, Paramount Pictures) by “Jackass” star  Johnny Knoxville.  Waldman gave one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard at one of these luncheons.

The Publicist of the Year Award went to the very popular Marshall Weinbaum of Disney, presented by David Alvarez from “West Side Story.” The Bob Yeager Award for Community Service was given to Chrissy Quesada Valentine, (VP Global Still Photography, Sony Pictures Entertainment) for her passionate efforts, energy, and talents to help advance the cause of animal rights and welfare, presented by Monica Guzman (Sr. Photo Editor, Sony) and Holly Connors (VP Worldwide Photography, Paramount).

Other honorees were Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy of MGM Studios, and Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, who created the TV series, “Reservation Dogs.”
