Forbes Magazine Stages First Strike in History: Three Days, Plus NY Daily News Remaining Staff Walkout

Forbes Magazine is staging a three day walkout beginning today. It’s their first strike in 160 years.

This is just the latest demonstration of anger by journalists who see the media business being destroyed by corporate greed. This week, the Los Angeles Times lost 115 editorial staffers including big name bylines. Last week Sports Illustrated was gutted by almost the whole staff getting fired.

“We are taking this unprecedented step to show that we will not allow such disrespectful behavior towards our negotiations to continue,” the Forbes union said in a statement. They won’t go back to work until Monday.

The New York Daily News is also set for a walkout today, says Axios online and the New York Times.. The News doesn’t even have a newsroom anymore. They’ve been whittled down to nothing by their owners. The News was once the most popular newspaper in the country. But owner Mort Zuckerman, hobbled by Alzheimer’s, could do very little as the newspaper was hit by the internet’s arrival and his inability to change with the times. The newspaper was sold to Alden Global Capital and run by the penny pinching Tribune Company.

There are reportedly layoffs coming today at Business Insider.com. And the owner of websites like Deadspin and Gizmodo is said to be looking for a buyer.

Justin Timberlake Drops First New Single In Six Years: “Selfish,” Listen to Pop Candy for the Ears

The amazing thing about Justin Timberlake’s new single, “Selfish” (which I keep calling Shellfish) is not the song — even though it’s pretty good. It’s like a piece of pop candy for the ears. “Selfish” is very catchy, and Timberlake’s vocal phrasing propels the song so much that you want to listen to it again, right away.

The marketing has to be congratulated. They’ve built up suspense and turned his release into an Event. Tonight JT will be on the Tonight show. Saturday he’s on “SNL.” Next week surprise show in NY at Irving Plaza. RCA Records has I Heart Radio all lined up, too.

Why? Because we are starved anything halfway decent.

Ratings: HBO’s “True Detective” with Jodie Foster Rises 20% from Last Week, Still Down 50% from Previous Season

“True Detective: Night Country” picked up some steam on Sunday night.

The fourth season of the HBO drama rose 20% over last week in linear numbers — meaning people who watched on HBO and no place else.

Total viewers was 678,000, which is pretty good. But the season 4 average is still off by 50% from season 3 in 2019.

The key demo average is down 76% from 2019.

Still, “Night Country” is growing. HBO says including Max, next day and so on, the total was 2.8 million. That means almost no one is watching HBO at home on TV, but on their phones, computers, and toaster ovens.

Maybe now that Foster has been nominated for a new Oscar, more people will tune in this coming week!

RIP Melanie, One of the Great Folk Pop Singers of the 60s and Early 70s, Dies at Age 76, Had a Hit with “Brand New Key,” and Wrote Coke’s Most Famous Ad Song

Melanie Safka has died at age 76. Her family posted an announcement to Facebook (see below).

Melanie went by just her first name. She had a huge hit with “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain}” but her breakthrough song was “Brand New Key.” It was number 1 on and the charts for weeks.

It was Melanie’s recording of her own song, “What Have They Done to My Song, Ma?” that morphed into the New Seekers’ hit “Look What They’ve Done to My Song.”  In turn, it was used for Coca Cola’s most famous ad as “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” (which claims its own songwriters, weirdly.) The original was so enormous it was covered by everyone. Coke used it for years, and it was even featured in the finale of “Mad Men.” She co-wrote the song, which meant, hopefully, she made a fortune. (If she didn’t, her kids will now.)

Melanie wasn’t particularly ambitious, and left the business almost as soon as she arrived. She kept recording and releasing music to fans but Melanie was not stoking the star making machine.

Jennifer Lopez Launching Her New Album, “This is Me…Now” on “Saturday Night Live” February 3rd

Last year, Jennifer Lopez was sitting front and center at the Grammy Awards with Ben Affleck. Remember, he looked so glum? She was not nominated for anything.

Anyway, she’s found something to do this year instead. JLo will be musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” on February 3rd. Critics Choice Award and Emmy winning star of “The Bear,” Ayo Edibiri, will be the host.

Lopez is launching her album, “This is Me…Now” on the show. How they will handle her famous lip syncing is anyone’s guess. “SNL” used to have a hard and fast rule about that, but I’m not sure they’ve stuck to it recently. Lopez’s first single from the album, “Can’t Get Enough,” has been a dud so far, so she needs “SNL” more than ever.

One thing to say about JLo: she’s not a great singer, but she’s a fun dancer, and a good comedienne. Expect a lot of skits about weddings, and so on.

Billy Joel Comeback Complete: Booked to Play on the Grammy Awards Along with New Single — Mystery Collaboration?

Billy Joel’s “comeback” is in full swing.

The Piano Man has agreed to play on the Grammy Awards on February 4th. That will be two days after he releases his first new single in 31 years.

The Grammys have already announced a few big acts, but they’re also expecting Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. Since the Grammys are famous for having superstar collaborations, imagine Billy with Taylor. He once called her the Beatles of her generation.

Billy is really “Turning the Lights Back On” in a big way!

He’s actually never been away to have a comeback. Billy’s finished up a record 150 shows at Madison Square Garden, in July. He’s also touring more than ever doing one shot dates around the world.

But this activity definitely is connected to Billy turning 75 this year.

Whatever the reason, it’s great to have him so active. We always need more Billy Joel. Let’s hope he turns ALL the lights back on and gives us an album this year!

Hillary Clinton Sends Consolation Note to Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie Over Oscars Barbie Omission

Ever gracious, Hillary Clinton has posted a nice consolation note to Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie over their not being nominated for Oscars.

Clinton knows what it’s like to lose an election but be vindicated in the end. Gerwig and Robbie are wildly rich because of “Barbie” and their movie will last forever. That does take the sting of out of yesterday.

I still feel that the international voting bloc of the Academy had more to do with the nominations than outright sexism. Gerwig has been nominated for Best Director before, for “Ladybird.” She is loved and respected. Robbie, on the other hand, is taken for granted. She deserves a special award for all her hard work.

Netflix Valentine to Oscar Voters: Bradley Cooper and the NY Phil Playing Bernstein Pieces Live for “Maestro”

Netflix is going all out for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.”

They’re taking over David Geffen Hall — aka Avery Fisher Hall — on February 14th.

The invite is to see members of the New York Philharmonic and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin play selections from the “Maestro” soundtrack. This will be followed by an onstage Q&A.

They don’t say this, but my guess is Bradley Cooper will step to the podium even briefly to conduct that orchestra. After all, he spent six years training for this moment.

This sensational idea takes a page from the “Oppenheimer” playbook. I just saw the movie played along with a live orchestra of music from composer Ludwig Goransson.

But this a notch up even from that exciting night. Leonard Bernstein’s life was spent in Geffen Hall — then known as Philharmonic Hall. I hope Geffen himself puts in an appearance. This is not to be missed!

Jon Stewart to Host “Daily Show” Every Monday a la Rachel Maddow MSNBC Deal, Will EP Rest of Week

Jon Stewart is coming home.

He’s going to host The Daily Show every Monday. It’s a deal not unlike Rachel Maddow’s on MSNBC.

The rest of the week he’ll be an Executive Producer and very involved with the show.

The Daily Show has struggled to find a host ever since Trevor Noah left last year.

Stewart hosted the show for years, from 1999 to 2015, until he finally stepped away — mostly, I always thought, because he lost the David Letterman spot on CBS to Stephen Colbert. Since then, Stewart has been an activist and filmmaker. An Apple TV show ran for one season.

The Daily Show airs on Comedy Central, owned by Paramount/Viacom. It’s actually the only show on that channel that I know of, so Stewart’s return — which must be expensive — shows a sign of commitment from the company. It’s particularly important in this election year, although who knows what the new Jon Stewart will be like politically — he’s seemed to have become much more conservative.
