Beatles for Sale: New Scorsese Produced Doc Headed to Disney Plus, Mono Album Box Set

It’s the fall, so it’s time for Beatlemania.

COming November 29th to Disney Plus is a new documentary produced by Martin Scorsese called “Beatles ’64.”

At the same time, we’re getting a box set of vinyl editions of the 2009 Beatles Mono Box set of CDs. That mono box is still quite stunning — if you don’t have it, get it.

The Mono vinyl set includes Meet The Beatles!; The Beatles’ Second Album; A Hard Day’s Night (Original Motion Picture Sound Track); Something New; The Beatles’ Story (2LP); Beatles ’65; and The Early Beatles. They’ve been out of print since the 60s!

I’ll get the box just for Beatles ’65!

The documentary is directed by David Tedeschi, with technology from Peter Jackson, of course. There are new interviews with Paul and Ringo. The film includes rare footage filmed by pioneering documentarians Albert and David Maysles. The live performances from The Beatles first American concert at the Washington, DC Coliseum and their Ed Sullivan appearances were demixed by WingNut Films and remixed by Giles Martin.

“Saturday Night Live” Ignores 49th Anniversary, Plus “Please Don’t Destroy” Trio is Gone

“Saturday Night Live” is pushing its 50th year celebration, as we know from its logo.

But last night was the actual 49th anniversary of the show’s premiere. No mention was made of this because it might confuse viewers. The show has now entered its 50th season.

The actual 50th anniversary would be next fall. But NBC will celebrate year 50 in February, during sweeps, with a prime time special and a big party at 30 Rock.

Last night’s show was overall very enjoyable, with the multi-talented Ariana Grande promoting the “Wicked” movie coming November 22nd. Grande has a wicked sense of humor and is a very good mimic. She imitated fellow singers like Miley Cyrus and Gwen Stefani, and also was hilarious as Jennifer Coolidge.

Stevie Nicks was the musical guest, the oldest one in eons. She sang her new song, “The Lighthouse,” and an old favorite, “Edge of Seventeen.” A much wanted duet with the two singers didn’t materialize, although Ariana made reference to it in her monologue. Sounds like Stevie wasn’t interested.

Not on the show for the third week in a row was the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. The three guys had been making fun videos for the last couple of seasons that were a breath of fresh air. No annoucement has been made, but they seem to be gone. One of their members, John Higgins, is the son of Steve Higgins, a long time “SNL” producer who is seen on camera and works on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show. That would seem a little awkward.

Minimized: James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump imitation. Last week there was nothing. This week he was thrown into the mix of a “Family Feud” parody but not featured. Is JAJ doing this? Or is “SNL” downplaying the caricature rather than promote Trump?

Ratings from last night should be very good. And this week coming up Billie Eilish is appearing to promote her Grammy Award chances. Lorne Michaels is pulling out all the stops for the 49th or 50th anniversary!

Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Stripped of Most Theaters After 3 Weeks, Won’t Make $7.5 Million

It’s no secret Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” is a box office bomb.

In its third week of release, “Megalopolis” was stripped of most of its theaters and was down to 227 screens. Total weekend take was $230,000.

“Megalopolis” has made now just $7.3 million. With a reported cost of $120 million, the sci fi film — with very negative reviews — could not have done worse.

Coppola says he put at least $100 million of his own money into the picture. That money is gone into the ether. It may be the biggest failure of any film ever, surpassing usual punch lines like “Ishtar” and “Heaven’s Gate.”

Whatever Coppola has done, his reputation remains intact as a superior filmmaker. Last night both “The Godfather” and “The Godfather Part 2” were playing in competing cable channels here in New York. They are extraordinary, and nothing can take away from that.

Where can “Megalopolis” go from here? This week Lions Gate will either pull it entirely or leave it in or two venues. The movie will go to streaming where someone will watch it (me). Maybe it will grow a following.

New: Trump Movie “The Apprentice” Makes $1.6 Mil Over Four Days, Audiences Stay Away

The Trump movie “The Apprentice” is a total box office write off.

“The Apprentice,” starring Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohen, has made 1.6 million over the last four days.

It’s playing in 1,750 theaters, a fairly wide release. Average per screen is 908, meaning just nine people — or fewer — have been in every theater where it’s played.

“The Apprentice” had a startling premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May when it had no distributor. There was an immediate issue because much of the financing had come from former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder, who thought he was backing a pro Trump movie. When Snyder discovered the movie showed Trump in a negative way — such as assaulting wife Ivana — the fear was the movie wouldn’t see the light of day.

But Tom Ortenberg stepped in with his Briarcliff Entertainment, and Snyder was persuaded to let the movie be released.

“The Apprentice” really never got much of a marketing push, however, and came off as something of a stealth release. The result is that audiences have stayed away in droves. The only way to save “The Apprentice” now — so it could impact the election – would be to just to put it on streaming services.

Dennis Quaid is frittering away what’s left of his career.

Today Quaid spoke for Donald Trump at his rally in Coachella, California. Not satisfied to have two dead movies at the box office, Quaid told the rally audience he supported Donald Trump to bring back “law and order.”

Trump has 34 felony convictions on his resume. He’s been judged a sexual abuser by a New York judge who has also called him a rapist.

Trump still has trials coming in Atlanta and Washington, DC. He’s not allowed to do business in New York anymore.

Quaid is a has been. His movie, “Reagan,” is a box office bust with $29 million. The movie cost that, meaning it’s 50% in the toilet. His other movie, “The Substance,” is dead with $10 million.

For years, Dennis Quaid was thought to be “the reasonable” brother because his brother, Randy, was considered crazy and for a while unable to re-enter the United States. But now Dennis has shown his genetic tie to Randy. He must be a terrible embarassment to son son Jack, whose mother is actress Meg Ryan.

The last time I saw Dennis Quaid in public was at a Grammy event in Los Angeles in 2019 for Willie Nelson. He and his latest wife rolled in backstage. Quaid looked like he’d been sleeping on park bench for a week. There was no wrinkle remover that would have cured him. He was so horrifying I left him out of the story.

The Trump movie everyone feared has turned out to be…nothing.

“The Apprentice” made $585,000 on its opening including $150,000 in previews.

The movie starring Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong is a total write off, a non starter, after so much publicity.

What happened?

It may be that no one on either side of politics has any interest in seeing a young Donald Trump being groomed as a monster by Roy Cohn, after all.

Republicans weren’t going to go anyway. And Democrats know the story already including the accusation from Ivana Trump that her husband raped her.

“The Apprentice” has top actors and writing. But you can’t make people pay money to see this story.

It’s a shock because “The Apprentice” was meant to be incendiary, and cause trouble in the election.

Briarcliff Entertainment has to now put it on streaming immediately, they have no choice. “The Apprentice” is a box office catastrophe.

Neil Young, Former Reagan Fan, Goes All In for Kamala Harris: “Honest Forthright Truth Teller”

There was a time, long ago, when rocker Neil Young voiced support for Ronald Reagan.

Now he’s all in for Kamala Harris for president. On his website he calls Harris an “honest and forthright truth teller.”

Just a few weeks ago, Young gave Harris’s running mate permission to use his song, “Rockin’ in the Free World.”

It is true he once supported Reagan. He told MTV in 1990: “I was one of those who felt that some ideas he had were good ideas. He had one point that he was stressing in the first six months of his job that he thought the people in the communities and neighborhoods should pull together and try to do things on their own more than depending on government to do it for them.”

Young eventually became a sharp critic of George W. Bush, however. In 2006, he released a record called “Let’s Impeach the President.”

But times have changed, and Young — who’s been political for 50 years — has urged his fans to vote for Harris.

Dan Aykroyd Endorses “Saturday Night” Movie: “Stand-alone masterpiece and surefire candidate for Best Picture”

Except for Bill Murray — who wasn’t part of the original “SNL” cast — no member of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players has endorsed Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night.”

The movie, now in wide release, has not taken off very well. But there’s hope a push this weekend may bring in audiences.

Now Dan Aykroyd has jumped into the fray, calling the movie a “masterpiece” and a possible “best picture.”

That leaves Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, and Garrett Morris to say something.

Dan at least has done something nice for Reitman, who’s directed him in “Ghostbusters” just as his dad, Ivan Reitman, did so well 40 years ago.

Lady Gaga “Harlequin” Album Rare Sales Disaster as “Joker 2” Movie Failure Kills It in 2nd Week

Last week, Lady Gaga dropped a new album called “Harlequin.” It was a companion to “Joker: Folie a Deux,” which was supposed to be a hit movie.

But “Joker 2,” as we call it, has been unmitigated disaster at the box office, literally shunned by all the fans of the original hit movie.

The result is that “Harlequin,” a beautifully sung jazz album with two new songs, is dead, too. Today it dropped to number 97 on iTunes after one week. Sales for its second week were nil, leaving the total at under 30,000 copies.

Gaga must be furious, and rightly so. She worked hard on “Harlequin,” which contains some of her best work ever. But with the movie in shambles, Universal Music hasn’t lifted a finger to promote the collection. It’s dead on the vine.

The only thing that could help “Harlequin” now is for the Grammys to revive it in the jazz categories. The Oscars were supposed to come in to play here, but with the movie gone, Gaga’s original songs probably won’t make the final 5 for Best Song.

All that work, down the drain. What a mess.

Maybe now we know why Gaga released her Bruno Mars duet, “Die with a Smile,” right before “Joker 2.” And she has a new single from her 7th album coming before the end of October. She knew that “Harlequin” was going to relegated to Lost Gem status.

There wasn’t a lot of interest last night in “The Apprentice.”

The film about Donald Trump’s early years, with Sebastian Stan starring and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn made just $150,000 last night.

There’s been a lot of publicity about this film, but that doesn’t seem to have translated into audience. Maybe the subject is just too unpleasant. The film shows Donald forcing himself sexually on first wife Ivana.

“The Apprentice” went into 1,750 theaters last night. A total of $150,000 is a disaster on almost any level. It means literally no one went to see it.

In Manhattan tonight, advance sales look a little better. So it may be that audience is slow to jump on “The Apprentice.” But it’s also not the most advantageous weekend to open a film. Tonight is Kol Nidre, the holiest night of the Jewish year, and tomorrow is Yom Kippur.
