Film Festival Wars: NY Cold Cocks Toronto With Early Announcements of Fincher, Anderson Movies

0

It’s war! This week the New York Film Festival asserted its position in the film festival wars and announced its opening night and centerpiece films two weeks early– David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice,” respectively. Cool! Except that the New York Film Festival announcements usually come after the news from the Toronto Film Festival, which hasn’t announced its lineup yet at all.

Indeed, New York’s announcement usually come around July 29th, a week or so after Toronto’s. But not this year. And that means there’s rumbling on the horizon. Toronto has been claim jumped. Two major titles are now set for New York. Trouble?

After last year’s festival circuit, Toronto decreed that no films that had just played at the quirky and expensive Telluride Film Festival– held a week before Toronto– could come north for premieres. “Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave” were 2013 Telluride hits, and Toronto– aka TIFF– didn’t want to be overshadowed again.

Of course, the issue with Telluride is that they don’t reveal their list until everyone arrives there around August 29th. People come by stage coach and G4 planes over treacherous Colorado mountains, having spent thousands of dollars on a hunch. So right now, no one knows anything.

But if the Fincher and Anderson movies were announced two weeks early by New York where does that leave the suddenly squeezed TIFF? Will New York allow those films to be shown in Toronto first? Unlikely. And if TIFF grabs a bunch of other big names– like “The Imitation Game” with Benedict Cumberbatch,” or Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken,” or Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher”– a Cannes hit– where will that leave Telluride?

One film I’m looking forward to in Toronto is Shawn Levy’s “This is Where I Leave You,” with an all star cast, based on Jonathan Tropper’s novel, and set for release September 12th from Warner Bros. And another possibility is Nick Sandow’s “The Wannabe,” produced by Martin Scorsese, with no distributor yet but a lot of buzz.

Of course, the big difference between Toronto and the other fests is that they have audience and jury prizes. New York is obviously a high profile showcase–and it’s New York. Telluride is there so you can say you went to Telluride, and explain how you got there. Also, Tom Cruise lives there sometimes.

So let the games begin!

Two and a Half Men: Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer Get Married. Really

1

Waiting for the final season of “Two and a Half Men”? The CBS sitcom, awful in so many ways, has come up with a great plot to see themselves off the air. Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer will marry so they can raise a little boy they adopt together. Wretching? Yes. I know you are. The characters are not gay. But this will be some kind of nod to something– lunacy, stupidity, whatever. It makes no sense. But that’s what network TV is for.

When Charlie Sheen starred on “Two and a Half Men,” the so called comedy was notable for just being coarse and vulgar. But with Sheen gone, it’s just meandered into nothingness. Now, with nowhere to go, the writers have come up with this silliness. Sheen, whose character “died” two years ago, may return in some form. The faster this thing is off the air, the better. I guess they had to close it by adding a child since Angus T. Jones, who played Cryer’s son. left to become a religious zealot last year.

“Two and  a Half Men” ends its run without any Emmy awards (Cryer won one, but that was for being a good actor in a bad situation). By the way, wasn’t this already the plot of a bad Adam Sandler movie? Yes, it was.

Tom Cruise: Sucker Punched by Sumner Redstone’s Viacom in Novel About Katie Holmes Marriage

6

When Hollywood heartthrob Steven Weller pulls Maddy Freed out of obscurity for a starring part in his newest, Oscar-worthy film, she feels her career roaring onto the express track. Steven’s professional attention soon turns personal as they are thrown together amid Europe’s Old World charm, and Maddy allows herself to tumble headlong into a fairytale romance with the world’s most eligible bachelor. She knows there’s no truth to the gay rumors that have followed him for years.–From the Simon & Schuster description of “The Actress”

No one ever accused book publishers of synergy with their corporate cousins. In the case of Simon & Schuster, they either have a lot of editorial independence or no one’s figured out that they’re owned by the same company as Paramount Pictures.

True enough Viacom owns both companies. Under the Paramount banner, Viacom produces the “Mission: Impossible” movies for Tom Cruise quite famously. Cruise used to have a long standing deal at Viacom/Paramount until Sumner Redstone “fired” him during the couch-jumping years. But they made up subsequently, and Tom returned with the biggest “M:I” movie of all, “Ghost Protocol.”

I guess the Viacom folks don’t realize that Simon & Schuster has just published Amy Sohn’s roman a clef novel about a Tom Cruise like character who’s possibly gay and gets into a fake marriage with a much younger actress. (See the description above.)

“The Actress” was published on July 1st and even got a big feature review in the New York Times from former film critic Janet Maslin. Subtle as a mallet, the Times review headline read: “Marriage With Eyes Wide Shut: Amy Sohn’s ‘The Actress,’ a Tom Cruise Roman à Clef.”

Booklist reviews said: “This may well be Sohn’s breakout book for its salacious look at a star obviously modeled on Tom Cruise and for its magnetic themes of lust and fame.”

This week, “The Actress” is splashed across the National Enquirer, where it’s getting a lot of play telling the “true” story of Tom Cruise.

And it’s not even like “The Actress” was published by S&S imprint Atria, which specializes in celebrity books. It’s from the hardcore S&S label, also the publisher of Hillary Clinton’s “Hard Choices.”

Readers have so far not warmed to “The Actress.” But continued publicity marking it as the Tom Cruise story using different names could gin up interest. Maybe Paramount will option it for Cruise and Katie Holmes as a reunion movie!

Shakira Hits 100 Million Likes on Facebook, Becomes Most Likable Woman in the World

1

I didn’t write this. The whole thing verbatim comes from the press release, which I liked so much because it’s so insane. In a good way. Shakira is the most likable woman in the world. I don’t know her, but I agree! Hips don’t lie!

The official Facebook page of multi-platinum, multi Grammy Award-winning global recording artist and activist Shakira has remarkably reached 100 million likes, making her the first person ever to reach this incredible milestone. With an impressive fan base spanning the entire globe, this achievement classifies Shakira as the “Most Likable Woman in the World.” Shakira’s most recent photo during her visit to Rio de Janeiro for her 2014 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony performance has already collected over 3.5 million likes in only four days, becoming her most liked Facebook Post to date.

“I am honored and humbled about reaching this milestone, because it’s one that’s purely about connecting with my fans from all parts of the globe,” Shakira expresses. “Social media and specifically Facebook has helped myself and other artists bridge the gap between the stage and the audience.  We’ve been able to create a conversation, where both

artists and fans can share with one another their thoughts, achievements, the most important moments of their lives in photographs and videos, and have a real, ongoing dialogue.”

Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s VP of Global Operations and Media Partnerships, also acknowledges this magnificent achievement. “The combination of Shakira’s global appeal, her authentic engagement with fans and her use of Facebook as a multi-media platform has positioned her to achieve the incredible milestone of 100M fans.”

Shakira recently gave an electrifying performance of her newest single, “La La La (Brazil 2014)” featuring Carlinhos Brown, at the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cupâ„¢ on July 13, 2014. The single “La La La (Brazil 2014)” featuring Carlinhos Brown is available on ONE LOVE, ONE RHYTHM: THE OFFICIAL 2014 FIFA WORLD CUPâ„¢ALBUM. This marked the third time Shakira performed at the FIFA World Cupâ„¢, making her the first artist to have three consecutive performances at the global event.  Her hit song “Waka Waka” was the last official song of the FIFA World Cupâ„¢ in 2010, and she performed her smash “Hips Don’t Lie” at the 2006 FIFA World Cupâ„¢ in Berlin.

Forbes Family Sells Out to Hong Kong Investors, Bono and Partners Exit

2

The Forbes family has sold their company to a group of Hong Kong investors after 97 years. The Forbeses aren’t saying how much they’ve sold, but it’s guessed to be the majority stake. Out of the picture now is Bono and Elevation Partners, who’d put money into Forbes a few years ago.

Steve Forbes wrote today on the company’s website: Our new partners respect the Forbes mission and our deep belief in entrepreneurial capitalism and free markets. They are entrepreneurs themselves. They recognize the vital importance of journalistic independence and excellence. It is very much in their self interest: violate those values and you vitiate the value and power of the Forbes name, in which they have made a substantial investment. Their insistence on continuity by keeping the Forbes family involved and retaining the current management team is the best evidence of this commitment.”

Okay, that said, who knows what will happen to Forbes? No one I know reads it or talks about it. The website is a content farm that isn’t exactly journalist friendly. The great era of Forbes ended with Malcolm Forbes 25 years ago, who partied himself into oblivion after his 1989 70th birthday extravaganza in Morocco. (He literally exploded the following year.) Nowadays, straight arrow Steve wanders around the neighborhood looking like Fred MacMurray in “Flubber.”

Good luck to them! I’m sure in no time the famous Forbes building down here on Fifth Avenue will be turned into a CVS.

Colin Firth, Emma Stone Make Magic in the Moonlight with Woody Allen RomCom

2

It’s too simple to say Woody Allen’s “Magic in the Moonlight” is a romantic comedy. It’s so beautifully written, with undertones of philosophy, religion and science, that “MM” is that rare other thing that scores on many levels. It’s also very funny.

Last night stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone were joined at the swanky A list premiere (at the Paris Theater, followed by dinner at Harlow) by Katie Couric and husband John Dolner, French actress Audrey Tatou, “Good Wife” star and Emmy nominee Christine Baranski, actress Dana Delany, “Moneyball” director Bennett Miller, hot-as-a-pistol actor Dane DeHaan, Stone’s boyfriend Andrew “Spider Man” Garfield, plus Oliver Stone, Regis and Joy Philbin, long time Woody pal John Doumanian, former Police Commish Ray Kelly, his wife Veronica, and their son Greg (of Fox 5 fame here), Vogue’s Anna Wintour in sunglasses, and  a wide-smiling Josh Lucas, who left the party with a pair of long legged Danish models ages 18 and 19. (They’re just friends. Really.)

Andrew Garfield, by the way, is sporting a big beard for Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” He’s going to play a priest, but we joked that he looked more rabbi.  It’s all good!

Woody and wife Soon Yi hit the premiere screening, and stayed a few minutes at the Harlow party. But Woody is in the middle of shooting a new movie in Providence, Rhode Island.

“MM” opens July 25th. It’s set in 1928, mostly around Nice and Provence in the south of France. Firth is a famous magician and de-bunker of fake psychics (very popular around that time). Stone is an American giving seances and communicating with the “other world” (where, Firth notes, he’s thought of opening a restaurant– built in audience).

Firth’s pal, played by the not-seen-enough-in-American-films Simon McBurney, convinces Firth’s Stanley to help him unmask Stone’s Sophie as a fraud. They all head to Provence, where Sophie is swindling the wealthy. By coincidence, Stanley’s wealthy aunt, played by a magnificent Eileen Atkins, lives nearby.

There are some other well known names in the mix: Hamish Linklater is the ukelele playing playboy son of Jacki Weaver who falls for Sophie; Marcia Gay Harden is her ambitious mother.  Jeremy Shamos is the on-scene shrink.

Woody often features magic and magicians in his films. A well known theme is that of mortality, the existence of God, and what is the meaning of life. All of this is present in “MM” but I think on a deeper level, and with funnier consequences. There’s a major surprise “reveal” or plot twist that must not be given away. There’s also a scene between Firth and Atkins that should be used for awards consideration. It’s a classic, and beautifully played.

After the masterpiece like “Blue Jasmine,” this film is a romp. Woody usually mixes it up since he releases a film per year. You get the Big Deal, then the smaller release. Ordinarily I’d say “MM” is a smaller Allen film, like “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy.” That may have been the intention. But “Magic in the Moonlight” has more going on than meets the eye– exactly as real magic does.  In the end, it’s a must not miss addition to the stunning Allen canon.

Elaine Stritch Dead at 89; She Told Friends She “Was Ready to Go” But No One Believed It

1

The great, and I do mean GREAT, Elaine Stritch, has passed away in Detroit at age 89. A couple of weeks ago her most recent documentarian told our Paula Schwartz that Elaine had said she “was ready to go.” Of course no one believed it. But a few months ago, when Elaine made her last trip to New York for a screening of the movie at the Paley Center, she stood and said goodbye to everyone from a wheelchair at the top of the steeply inclined theater. She was still quipping, and still carrying on, but she did look tired, and maybe knew something was up that we didn’t. Elaine was one of the all time greats, and it will be hard to imagine New York and theater and show biz and life without her.

There are so many great stories and so many people will tell them. Liz Smith — check her out at nysocialdiary.com– knew her best and promoted the hell out of Stritch. DA Pennebaker captured her on film for the making of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” score, and she became an overnight sensation at around 50! A few years ago, Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus won an Emmy for their HBO film about Stritch’s magnificent one woman show, “At Liberty.”

At Elaine Kaufman’s memorial in 2011, Stritch told how the other Elaine took pity on her when she was new and struggling and gave her a job as a bartender. The gig lasted one night. Stritch, a self confessed functioning alcoholic, served one guy 37 drinks until he keeled over. That was the end of that career!

Stritch was married once, for a long time, loved guys but had no children. Her survivors are everyone she knew, her massive crowds of friends and admirers and fans, not to mention her nieces and nephews and cousins in Detroit who loved her. Her memorial service will have to be held in Madison Square Garden because no Broadway house could hold everyone.

Elaine, please, don’t curse at God when you get to heaven today. But I’m sure at tonight’s premiere for Woody Allen’s “Magic in the Moonlight,” there will be a cheer and a prayer. And all the lights on Broadway will be dimmed.

Garth Brooks World Tour with Trisha Yearwood Has Surprisingly Low Ticket Price

4

Garth Brooks will start his world tour on September 4th in Chicago. His special guest is wife Trisha Yearwood. It’s the first time Brooks has played Chicago in 17 years. So you’d think the ticket price would be pretty high, at least $150.

But guess what? Tickets are just $56 plus tax and fees, coming to $65.50. What? His website says all the tickets will cost that little, making the show completely affordable. There’s a limit to the number you can buy (6). Garth will make his money on merchandise (which everyone will want) and volume– a really sold out auditorium without scalpers taking a cut.

The rest of the world tour dates will be released soon on his website. Album comes on the second Tuesday of November. Downloads are imminent.

Robin Thicke Sells 7K CDs in 2nd Week, as Total Sales Fall to Scary Lows

1

No one wants Robin Thicke’s album “Paula.” And very few people want any other CDs out there either physically or digitally.

In his second week, Thicke sold just 7,205 copies of “Paula,” bringing his total to maybe 30,000. The whole thing is a bust, a wash, it’s a goner, worse even than JLO and Mariah Carey’s new releases.

But the whole chart is a disaster. The number one album, by singer songwriter Sia, sold only 52,000 copies. That’s a new scary low for a debut number 1.  The whole top 10 sold only about 300,000 copies. The whole top 10!

If this were the auto business, people would be jumping out of buildings. There is absolutely no way record companies as they exist now can survive on those sales figures. It’s not like they’re selling something else besides music. Are they?

I did tell you that all CD and digital sales were down for the first half of 2014. Only streaming is up. But it’s not up that much. Where are the releases? Why is there no exciting music, no songs of the summer of 2014? The situation is quite sad. The record companies have encouraged so much sampling, and cannibalizing, that original music has all but been stamped out.

And back to Mariah and JLO. We’re not done with those stories. Those albums should have generated hits. Mariah had them on the CD. What happened? The other album that didn’t produce was Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP. We’re still counting on Gaga’s jazz duets with Tony Bennett to light a fire under sales this fall.

“Rocky” In Broadway Knockout, Latest Show of this Season to Close

0

“Rocky” has been knocked out on Broadway. Despite a stellar set, and actors like Andy Karl who were terrific, the musical version of the Sylvester Stallone classic film never caught on. With bad reviews and no Tony awards, “Rocky” was not long for this world. Yo Adrienne, the show will close on August 17th.

The news comes as the Tupac Shakur musical “Holler If You Hear Me” has announced it’s also closing shop a month after it opened. Already closed from the 2013-14 season: “Mother and Sons” and  “The Bridges of Madison County,” as well as short runs like “Act One, ” “All the Way” and “A Raisin in the Sun.” “The Cripple of Inaashman” and “Of Mice and Men” are next. “If/Then” with Idina Menzel, which started strong, is now on discount.

Wait: “Violet” is on its last legs, and “The Velocity of Autumn” came and went in a minute. I hope the “Realistic Joneses” is gone. Yikes.

What a season! Last year we had Matilda, Pippin, Kinky Boots and Motown. They’re still playing. This year we are left with Beautiful, Les Miz, and Hedwig. I’m avoiding the obvious about Bullets Over Broadway.

Were the shows that bad? No, not really. But ticket prices are high. And the theater district aka Times Square is a mess. The pedestrian mall has turned into a nightmare. Jack hammer that thing up, put back the streets. The mall is filthy and scary. The Great White Way needs an angioplasty– and fast!

Luckily, a great fall season is just around the corner, with “The Last Ship” among the many highlights.
