New Netflix Series Starring Steve Carell Will Mock Trump’s “Space Force” Plan with “Office”-like Comedy

Steve Carell is returning to TV with a new Netflix series. “Space Force” will mock Donald Trump’s plans for an actual Space Force. Carell is a creator of the show with “The Office” co-creator, Greg Daniels. This is already so funny they almost don’t have to make the series. You can just imagine it and start laughing.

A teaser gives us a little idea of what’s to come: “The goal of the new branch is to ‘defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks’…or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”

So think “The Office” maybe never in space– my guess is they’ll talk about space a lot but never get there. Hey wasn’t there a movie called “Office Space.” That would have been a good title, no?

Carell is just coming off great reviews for “Beautiful Boy” and mystifying ones for “Welcome to Marwen” which made $10.5 million and is about to vanish from theaters. Carell’s had a pretty great history with movies overall since leaving “The Office,” from “Date Night” to “Foxcatcher” to “Crazy Stupid Love.” He kind of steals “Vice,” playing right now, as Donald Rumsfeld.

Rachel Maddow Now Commanding a Wide Lead (700K+) Over Sean Hannity in Cable News Race

Rachel Maddow trounced Sean Hannity once again last night. She beat him by 700,000 viewers. The night before, Monday. was similar.

Some nights MSNBC’s Maddow has opened up as much of a million viewer lead over the Fox News talker.

Last night it was 3.27 million to 2.587 million. Hannity is pulling in fewer viewers than “The Five” on Fox News at 5pm or Tucker Carlson at 8pm. And Hannity is supposed to be the network’s star. He’s certainly the highest paid of all Fox News’s anchors.

On top of that Lawrence O’Donnell is similarly beating Laura Ingraham at 10pm. O’Donnell is outdrawing her by at least 300K viewers every night.

So what’s happening? As Trump’s Wall crumbles and the government shut down continues, viewers are obviously turning to MSNBC to get the real story. Fox News isn’t telling them any truths at all, and even the most hardcore Republican viewers– especially those affected by the shutdown– need answers.

“Ghostbusters 3”? We Reported It Here in 2009, Per Ivan Reitman, And Now It’s Happening

Reports yesterday and today about “Ghostbusters 3” directed by Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman.

Readers with long memories will recall we reported the plan for “Ghostbusters 3” in December 2009. Ivan Reitman told us then about the next movie, with all the old stars and new characters including Oscar, the son of Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray’s characters.

It’s been brewing for a decade. In that time, the all-female “Ghostbusters” came out was destroyed by evil internet trolls.

But here’s the original story. “G3” is set for summer 2020. It should be music to Huey Lewis’s ears since he wrote the theme music, lifted by Ray Parker Jr. The original song is “I Want a New Drug.” (Parker had another hit, “Jack and Jill,” that sounded just like Sly Stone’s “Stand.” Hmmm…)

I told you on Saturday that Paris Jackson, 20, had been MIA from social media for a month, since about December 12th.

UPDATE: Paris says on Instagram: “the media is exaggerating per usual.. yes i’ve taken a break from work and social media and my phone because it can be too much sometimes, and everyone deserves a break, but i am happy and healthy and feeling better than ever! gabriel and i have some new music we’re stoked to share with y’all! (@thesoundflowers) hope you guys’ new year started out with lots of love and light and all the things. i’ll be back soon!! xxox”

The Gabriel she’s referring to is a musician named Gabriel Glenn. They’ve formed an unofficial still to be determined music group called The Soundflowers. (Not the Wallflowers.) So far, there’s no evidence of any music but a kind of seventies bad Eagles sounding material.

EARLIER: Today, someone gave ET a statement saying Paris was taking time off and getting treatment for her “emotional health.” I know who the source is, they go to ET like it’s their church. But it’s fine, it’s all true.

Plain speak: she’s in rehab. A close friend told me over the weekend, “The last few months have been very hard for her.”

Paris has battled depression and suicidal thoughts for several years. Who can blame her? Her father was killed, she had to endure the trial of Dr. Murray, not to mention false accusations against Michael from people wanting money from his estate. Now a documentary is coming with more sketchy claims. Paris deserves time to find herself and find ways to cope with all kinds of craziness.

My bet is she comes back better than ever, kicking ass, and taking names.

Hot Hollywood Night in Cold New York for “Glass” with Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Super Hero Sarah Paulson

We had to come home to freezing cold temps to have a real Hollywood night last night in New York for M. Night’s Shyamalan’s “Glass.”

All the stars came including Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, Sarah Paulson, and Bruce Willis, as well as Luke Kirby, who was getting lots of “hey-I-know-that-guy” handshakes from “Mrs. Maisel” fans. He plays Lenny Bruce, and very well. (I asked, he’s Canadian, with Brooklyn blood. That’s why it works.)

After the screening, Universal took the guests to Buddokan on Ninth Avenue, where were joined by Mrs. Jackson aka LaTanya Richardson, who’s getting standing ovations every night in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” And Sarah Paulson’s partner in life, the great actress Holland Taylor, regaled us with stories about her birthday gift from Sarah (a beautiful necklace).

Universal brought in the heavy guns for “Glass,” with all the top execs including Ron Meyer and Donna Langley crossing this great country by plane for the occasion. “Glass” is said to be tracking at a high level for this weekend, although snowstorms threaten the box office. Fans of “Split” and “Unbreakable” will not be disappointed in this double sequel. McAvoy, playing a sort of Incredible Hulk as Sybil, is outstanding, but so is the whole cast. They are very invested in “Glass” shattering expectations.

Sam Jackson, as you know, is the coolest guy in town. How many movies does he have this year? “Uh, five, I think,” he said, counting them as we dined on Buddakan’s delicious treats. Does he ever turn anything down? “Oh yeah. I have to, so all these actors”– he said, pointing around the room– “can work.”

Jackson said it was mostly fun making “Glass,” even filming in Allentown, Pennsylvania “wasn’t bad.” What’s the worst place he ever got stuck for a shoot? “Winnipeg,” he said, “in the winter.” Check out this photo of Sam from “Glass.” I told he looked a lot like Frederick Douglass. He said, sardonically, “I hear he’s doing great things now.” (wink wink)

Meanwhile, McAvoy was still hosting with the most even when I left, and the Paulson-Taylor entourage– who were having a fine time– exited. Bruce Willis checked out after a few minutes so he and wife Emma could get back to their kids in Westchester County.

Bette Midler, the most recent Dolly Levi, has sent out a statement about the original Dolly. Carol Channing, who passed away today at age 97. Carol, by the way, was famed for not missing a performance in the four years she starred in “Hello, Dolly!” from 1964 to 1968.

“There was only one Carol Channing, and there will never be another.  She was that rarest of stage creatures, an absolute original.  From her instantly recognizable voice, to her stature, which was close to 6 feet, with her wide-eyed take on the world she crept into theater-goers hearts and took up permanent residence there.

When Scott Rudin invited me to play Dolly in 2016, I immediately thought of her and went to visit.  How could I not?  She had played the part over 7,000 times around the world, and to the world, she WAS Dolly. It was one of the great afternoons of my life.  She was gracious, and she was generous, sharing with me the legends, the lore and the mechanics of Dolly, much of which had been lost in time.  I will forever be grateful to her for lighting my way to one of the most magical experiences of my performing life, and for the hours I spent in her company.  I flat-out adored her and send her fans, her friends and her son, Channing Lowe, my condolences, although as far as I am concerned, she will live forever.

Lance Armstrong, who’s shown no contrition for cheating, lying, and doping his way to seven Tour de France wins, is back. This is after he was stripped of those seven wins for obtaining them fraudulently.

Architectural Digest is featuring his 6,000 square foot home in Colorado that he shares with his fiancee, who’s also the mother of his two most recent children.

How does he even have a 6,000 square foot house, or a pot to piss in? A year ago, Armstrong settled $5 million with the US government right before a trial that could have cost him $100 million. In 2015 he was ordered to pay $10 million in restitution to his former management company.

This is hysterical. Subway sandwich’s Jared Fogle will be next, I guess. There is no such thing as shame.

AD just pretends nothing ever happened, and the article talks about Armstrong’s art collection, his interior designer, his artist friends, and so on. He says Ed Ruscha is his friend. If so, Ed is an idiot. Robin Williams, who was Armstrong’s friend, was betrayed by Armstrong and told me so. No one can be his friend.

Here’s the quote where I burst out laughing: Armstrong’s love of art goes back decades, to when he was spending half the year racing in Europe. “I used my time [there] as kind of an education in culture and art,” he says.

No, he spent the time in Europe organizing a doping ring so he could win the Tour de France fraudulently.

Wait, you can tour his art collection! Are these people insane? Are there no editors at Conde Nast?

Let’s just over what happened again: Armstrong won 7 Tour de France titles. He was plagued the entire time by rumors of doping. Here’s the entire history of his doping on Wikipedia.

He finally admitted it all to Oprah Winfrey in a 2013 interview. Now, AD acts as if it never happened. This must the Trump effect. A blatant thief shows his bounty off to the public, and brags about it. Armstrong, as you know, is banned from racing. But somehow, like a cockroach, he survives.

The Golden Globes are over, the Critics Choice Awards have passed,  and the Oscars are yet to come.  One of the stand out events was GBK Productions luxury lounge, which was held at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills.  GBK, founded by Gavin B. Keilly, is always the premiere lounge of any awards season —  so much so that Spike Lee stopped in and made sure to support Peace 4 Animals a world respected organization established in 2012 by esteemed animal advocate Katie Cleary.

What we love about GBK is that it brings in small vendors and entrepreneurs to mix with big names. You meet those most interesting people from around the country piloting their own businesses. On the red carpet at the Critics Choice Awards, we ran into eventual Best Supporting Actress winner Regina King. At the Emmys’ GBK suite last fall, Regina bought 100 artfully designed backpacks from small Jacksonville, Florida company Blessed Design. We asked her how it all went. “I loved those people, and their designs. We gave all the backpacks away,” Regina said.

So celebrities can really help the products.  Chaz Dean WEN Hair and Body care was on hand with their own mini salon and previewing their new winter line.   To get in shape Fit-Farm spa/resort in Nashville, Tennessee had the VIP’s create their own personal fitness plan.  “Vice” director Adam McKay tried the Story Electric Bike, they give a bike to charity for every bike sold.  The Artisan Group founded by Valerie S. Guerrero, is always elegant and filled with lovely products from all over the country.  Linda Cardellini loved Yomo Studio Jewelry and perused Seraph design clothes and accessories, Wonderlash, Go Donut smartphone stand as well. Prospeck, a Canadian start up company, offered their Spektrum computer glasses which helps with eye strain.  Keidrich Sallati, as did all the other celebs, ‘test drove’ the Kahuna Chair which offers the coolest, soothing best 4D massage out there, as well as their new LED anti-aging mask.

And more: The Queen of Wakanda, Angela Bassett, just loved the popular Comfitude blankets and chatted with the President of the company, New Yorker Jimmy Steindecker.  Danny Huston confabbing about Italy with the Italian luxury resort of La Corte Dell’Astore, which looks just stunning, no wonder it is a go to destination for savvy travelers.  The lovely “Dumplin” star Danielle Macdonald was excited about going to the hot spot Turks & Caicos Sailrock resort.  Steven Cunningham’s handcrafted quality Warther Cutlery, Nicole Frank’s TWE Wardrobe Evolution for women, Snow Teeth Whitening, Total Life Changes skincare/teas/coffee/oils and delicious Heitz Cellars wines were all popular stops.  Anthony Anderson spent much time at the Knot Standard menswear room, stylish clothes for men. Jennifer Contini’s aka Jenakziti Painted Hearts, showed her off hip, pop fun art, which have long been a staple in Manhattan, Hamptons and more.

And everyone got a little tipsy trying JCB truffle or caviar flavored vodka. Their carafe is a knockout, too! The JCB folks made it a little hard to concentrate toward the end– just try some and you’ll see: Oscar-Emmy-Tony winner Viola Davis tested the product to see if she could get away with murder! (You don’t remember a thing!)

TV: Roseanne Spin-Off “The Conners” Will Be Renewed for Second Season, Even as Ratings Level Off

The “Roseanne” spin off, “The Conners,” is getting renewed for another season. Two cast members have indicated to me that they already know the good news, both Laurie Metcalf and Sarah Gilbert.

The renewal comes despite a rocky first season. They debuted with 10.5 million viewers and last week, their 9th, brought 6.85 million. They have two more episodes in this season, tonight and next week.

What’s interesting is that “The Conners” brings in an extra 2.5 million people who DVR the show. They have a big audience who save it for later. That’s helping them.

Also, aside from juggernaut “NCIS” opposite them, “The Conners” brings in the highest ratings of the night. They also provide a lead in for ABC’s comedy lineup, which doesn’t do as well as “The Conners.” But you’ve got to fill the time with something. And for now, “The Conners” will do just fine.

Metcalf, by the way, is coming back to Broadway this spring with John Lithgow in “Hillary and Clinton.” She’s won back to back Tony Awards in “A Doll’s House Pt. 2” and “Three Tall Women.” She’s one of our great actresses. One upside of “The Conners” is that we’ve gotten to see more of her character, Jackie. That’s a good read to keep the show going!
