Lil Nas X-Billy Ray Cyrus Hit Is Number 1 on Billboard, Trade Mag Sticks to Its Guns Refusing Country Chart Entry

0

Here’s a little update:

The remix of “Old Town Road” with Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, has hit number 1 on the Billboard Top 100 singles charts. But that’s a combined chart of all genres.

Billboard, which calls itself the “bible” of the music biz, refuses to put “Old Town Road” on the country chart. So it’s not there at all.

Meantime, iTunes lists the song at number 1 on its country and pop charts. iTunes is far more important at this point, so the Billboard exclusion is just a sad reflection of their status as out of it. And maybe, racist. Because why else keep a hip hop artist off the country charts?

It’s not a good look for Billboard, which is far from its roots. Its late great editor, Timothy White, must be rolling in his grave.

But now Lil Nas X– I like this guy– is stirring things up again. He says on Twitter he’s making music with Ryan Tedder and OneRepublic. He’s just going to cross all genres and make everyone crazy. We need this!

UPDATE: Elton John’s “Rocketman” BioPic Going to Cannes, As I Told You Twice Last Month

0

I told you twice last month that Elton John’s biopic, “Rocketman,” was going to Cannes. Once on March 7th, and the next time on March 20th.

That didn’t stop the Hollywood Reporter from writing it today, with no mention of my stories. Of course, they don’t tell you that Sir Elton cleared dates on his European tour so he would be available to appear on the red carpet the first week of Cannes.

They also didn’t tell you that he will play the piano, maybe on the red carpet, which would be amazing. In any case, you know the deejay at the Palais des Festivals will have an all-Elton set booming that night.

“Rocketman” will premiere either on Wednesday or Thursday after opening night. Bernie Taupin will be on hand, as will Elton’s partner, David Furnish, maybe their little boys, which would be swell, and the whole cast. Director Dexter Fletcher will be there, too.

And by the way, “Rocketman” opens in the US on May 31st, not on the 24th, as the Reporter claims.

“American Idol” in Steep Ratings Decline Hits Season Low, Loses 15.6% from Last Week, Beaten by Academy of Country Music Awards, Which Hit Their Own All Time Low

0

The new “American Idol” is having big ratings problems in its second season on ABC.

Last night, Idol had its low for the season in its sixth episode. They dropped from 7.2 million viewers to just 6 million– an incredible decline of 15.60%.

“Idol” also lost to CBS’s “Academy of Country Music Awards”– which itself had its lowest ratings ever. But they still beat “Idol” handily.

I don’t know what’s going on with “Idol,” but I do know Katy Perry should be making records and touring, and getting herself out of there. She’s wasting her own music career.

“Desperate Housewives” Actress Felicity Huffman Among More than Dozen Pleading Guilty in College Admissions Scam, Lori Loughlin Not Included

0

Actress Felicity Huffman is one of more than a dozen parents pleading guilty in the college admissions scam. Lori Loughlin is not in this group.

Huffman said in a statement: “I am pleading guilty to the charge brought against me by the United States Attorney’s Office. I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions.”

She added: “I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community. I want to apologize to them and, especially, I want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly. My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her. This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty.”

Huffman paid the least amount of money in the scandal, but is getting headlines because of her fame in Hollywood. Others paid much more, including Loughlin who coughed up $500,000. One day we’ll hear why Huffman did it. It makes no sense. She and husband William H. Macy are the last ones anyone would think would do this.

Famed Character Actor Seymour Cassel Dies at 84 in Los Angeles, Oscar Nominated for John Cassavetes’s “Faces,” Appeared in “Rushmore,” Many Hits, TV Staple

0

Seymour Cassel, the veteran character actor, has died at age 84.

Cassel was nominated for an Oscar in 1969 for John Cassavetes’ “Faces,” but he was a great journeyman actor who appeared in dozens of highly regarded TV shows and movies. He was distinctive, and developed a following among cineastes.

One of them was Wes Anderson, who featured Cassel in movies like “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tennenbaums.” But what a career! You couldn’t change channels in the 60s and 70s without seeing Seymour. He was that much in demand.

Cassel had a big resurgence in the late 80s and early 90s, working with directors like Robert Altman, Barry Levinson, and Steve Buscemi. Seymour appeared in nine episodes of Tracey Ullmann’s award winning “Tracey Takes On…” and never stopped.

I’m told the last couple of years old age kind of socked him, and I’m so sorry to hear it. He was a great storyteller and it was always a pleasure to run into him. He was divorced and had two children. According to the imdb, he gave Slash his nickname. I’m not surprised.

Seymour appeared in two Cassavetes movies, “Shadows” in 1958, and “Faces” (1969). He got the Oscar nod for the second one. He worked with Cassavetes, his friend, a lot, and that’s what I always associated him with when I saw him. He was a cool guy, a total original, and will be sorely missed.

Solange (Beyonce’s Singer Sister) Cancels Major Coachella Appearance after New Album Bombs in Less Than a Month

0

Fans of Coachella got a surprise tonight. A big act has cancelled performance.

Solange Knowles, sister of Beyonce, and a respected R&B artist in her own right, suddenly pulled out of her show at Coachella scheduled for this coming weekend. She was scheduled to appear on Saturday April 13th and the 20th.

Her team posted to Twitter: “Due to major production delays, Solange will unfortunately no longer be performing at this year’s festival. She sends her sincerest apologies, and looks forward to performing at Coachella in the future.”

Yes, but Solange released a new album a month ago, on March 1st, called “When I Get Home.” The album got good reviews, but it entered the charts at number 7. After that it was dead. So far the album has sold just 13,500 copies and streamed enough to total 63,000. “When I Get Home” was basically DOA. And that’s crazy. She was in a position to build and build. But there was no press, no appearances, no TV, no single, nothing. The album has since vanished from all charts.

Now comes the cancellation of the Coachella appearance, which would have boosted interest and sales.

This isn’t the first time Solange has cancelled a major show. She cancelled a New Year’s Eve show in South Africa at the end of 2017 bec=ause of an “Autonomic Disorder,” she wrote on Twitter. “It [sic] been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me.”

Hard to say what her label, Columbia Records, thinks as they fight for sales and hits. Beyonce is also signed to Sony, and they’re not going to rock any boats while they’re waiting for a new release from her.

Coachella 2019 is already plagued by tragedy. A rigger who’d worked with the festival for 20 years fell to his death Saturday.

The festival’s company issued an announcement: “Today, Goldenvoice lost a colleague, a friend, a family member. Our friend fell while working on a festival stage. It is with heavy hearts and tremendous difficulty that we confirm his passing. He has been with our team for twenty years in the desert and was doing what he loved. He was a hard- working and loving person that cared deeply about his team. As our lead rigger, he was responsible for the countless incredible shows that have been put on at the festival. We will miss him dearly,” the company said.

Box Office: “Shazam!” Makes $53.4 Mil, Becomes Surprise Hit Franchise for Beleaguered DC Comics-Warner Bros.

0

Shazam! Didn’t Gomer Pyle used to say that? Shazam!

Well, no one’s thinking about that today as “Shazam!” the movie about a goofy super hero is number 1 at the box office. Zachary Levi is suddenly a movie star and David F. Sandberg is the most wanted director in comic book land.

For Warner Bros. and DC Comics, “Shazam!” is a god-send after so many beleaguered movies on their resume. “Shazam!” has made $56 million in its first weekend (including some early previews). With a $100 million price tag, that means they’ve got a home run.

Sandberg had two previous Warners/New Line movies, each horror films that did fine. Credit Toby Emmerich for believing in him. Levi was “Chuck” on TV, went to Broadway for very good notices in “She Loves Me,” and is currently on “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” the bit hit on Amazon. Shazam has been around since the 1930s, so “Mrs. Maisel” could work in a Shazam joke for Levi’s character. (“Gomer Pyle” started in 1962 so “MMM” may not be there yet.)

Shazam has an interesting history in the comic books. He used to be called Captain Marvel, until a lawsuit between DC Comics and Fawcett Books put an end to him because Shazam was too close to Superman. Then Marvel Comics started publishing their own Captain Marvel. It gets complicated after that, but Captain Marvel eventually fell under Marvel Comics.

Now Warner-DC will be able to do at least two more movies, and re-milk the whole thing for a decade. As Gomer Pyle would say:

Will Ferrell, Adam McKay Realize Gary Sanchez is Yankees Star Catcher, Dissolve 13 Year Old Production Company of Same Name

0

For a long time, people wondered who Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s production company, Gary Sanchez Productions, was named for. Some people thought it was a dog. Then Gary Sanchez became a star catcher for the New York Yankees, which made things confusing.

Now Ferrell and McKay are dissolving Gary Sanchez after 13 years. They didn’t even consider changing the name to Austin Romine Productions. Gary Sanchez Productions gave us the Anchorman and Daddy’s Home movies, and many other Ferrell comedies like “The Other Guys” (which was really good).

But McKay has sort of left the world of comedy for his more socially directed movies like “The Big Short” and “Vice,” each of which produced Oscar nominations. He hasn’t cast Ferrell so far, and probably won’t in his next one, the Jennifer Lawrence starrer about Elizanet Holmes and Theranos.

So they are splitting up. Ferrell hasn’t had a real hit in a while. “Holmes and Watson” was a stink bomb. He just filmed “Downhill” with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. It sounds good on paper, at least. McKay Tweeted a thank you to everyone he’d worked with after Deadline broke the original story today.

Ferrell has remained mum. My guess is, he’s not thrilled. McKay could have cast him as George W. Bush in “Vice,” when you think of it. But Sam Rockwell got the role and the Oscar nomination. Ferrell is very talented. He’s capable of making some smart comedies for time to come. I always loved “Stranger than Fiction.” Stay tuned…

UPDATE Rapped Lil Nas X Gets His Number 1 on Country Chart at Last: iTunes, Better than Billboard

0

Billboard took Lil Nas X’s country song, “Old Town Road,” off its country chart. So Lil Nas X, a rapper, was smart: he added Billy Ray Cyrus to the remix.

Now “Old Town Road” is number one not only on the iTunes pop chart, but it’s number 1 on the country chart.

A rapper now stands atop the Country chart.

Billboard, in what seems like move to keep a black artist off the country chart, made a terrible mistake. Now, as “Old Town Road” is selling, selling, selling, the “Bible” of pop music will have to backtrack fast.

“Old Town Road” is also at the top of all Spotify’s streaming charts!

Now Lil Nas X will have to make a whole album of country sounding songs. And you know what that means!

Lil Nas X Adds Billy Ray Cyrus to “Old Town Road,” Zooms to Number 1 on iTunes After Billboard Boots Him from Country Chart

0

Lil Nas X would not take ‘no’ from Billboard after they booted his “Old Town Road” from the country charts.

He got country royalty Billy Ray Cyrus and added him to a remix of the single. Now “Old Town Road” is number on the iTunes POP chart. It’s also number 1 on the iTunes Rap Chart. However, it doesn’t appear so far on the iTunes country chart.

The difference between Billboard and iTunes charts is this: the Billboard editors decided “Old Town Road” wasn’t ‘country enough.’ On iTunes, it’s the buyers/listeners. Either way, it’s racist. “Old Town Road” is a better song than most on any country charts.

Cyrus saw it two days ago. He Tweeted to Lil Nas: “Been watching everything going on with OTR. When I got thrown off the charts, Waylon Jennings said to me “Take this as a compliment” means you’re doing something great! Only Outlaws are outlawed. Welcome to the club!”

Lil Nas X’s original version is number 3 on iTunes, btw. I think it would be funny if more country artists stepped up to make versions. Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, you’re next.

Billy Ray wrote on Twitter: “It was so obvious to me after hearing the song just one time. I was thinking, what’s not country about it? What’s the rudimentary element of a country and western song? Then I thought, it’s honest, humble, and has an infectious hook, and a banjo. What the hell more do ya need?”

“A few days passed and I went to the studio to do vocals. When I finished the pass, I whistled at the end of the song. Thats when the engineer stood up and said, “that shit is fire” We’re keeping that! Glad you gusys are diggin’ the tune, love seeing all your meme’s…. #OTR”

And that is how he got on the record.

Now the remix is going to be the biggest record of the year. And Billboard looks idiotic. I am very sorry that they’ve done that. White artists have always been allowed on R&B charts (Eagles, Hall & Oates). Charley Pride was a superstar black artist who sang country music. What’s up with these people?
