Broadway Casualty: Idina Menzel’s “Redwood” — Without Any Tony Noms — Closing in Three Weeks

0

The first casualty of the Tony Awards has arrived.

“Redwood,” a musical starring Idina Menzel, will shutter on May 18th.

“Redwood” had mixed to poor reviews. It received not one Tony Award nomination, which is a death knell for an original musical.

“Redwood” will be the first of many to close up shop without awards recognition. “Old Friends,” the Stephen Sondheim revue, and “The Last Five Years,” with Adrienne Warren and Nick Jonas are on the chopping block as well.

Another show that didn’t get much love include “Smash,” which was based on the NBC TV show. No one knows how “Smash” even got to Broadway in the first place.

The big ticket shows “Othello” and “Glengarry Glen Ross” are set to close anyway. The former won’t even make it to the Tony Awards on June 8th. The latter goes to June 28th.

George Clooney’s “Good Night and Good Luck” also closes June 8th after the matinee.

Every year this happens, and it’s frustrating for all the people involved.

In the cases of these $900 a ticket shows, scheduling short runs that expire on the day of the Tony Awards certainly sends a message that the producers don’t care one way or another. The ticket price is also an affront to the Tony committee.

“MI8: Final Reckoning” Popcorn Bucket May Have Clues About Plot with Keys Shaped as Religious Crosses

0

Regal Cinemas has released a video of its popcorn bucket for “Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning.”

Is there a spoiler here?

Two keys, shaped as crosses, are needed to unlock some kind of box, or explosive device, or who knows?

But the crosses, including the indented blue cross between them, seem to indicate Christianity perhaps.

Interesting since Tom Cruise is a member of the Scientology cult, and disavows conventional religions. I doubt he’s leaving the cult, but he did come up with the movie’s story.

Keys can be shaped in many ways. Most are not in the mold of crosses. So it’s not a coincidence. And whatever the outcome of unlocking the device, it can only be done by the two keys fitting together.

Cruise was raised Catholic, was baptized, and thought about becoming a priest. That was a long time ago. After he joined Scientology, he even induced his mother and sisters to jump into the cult.

Stay tuned…

Kanye West “Donda 2” Number 1 on iTunes, Streaming on Spotify Despite Hitler Obsession, Antisemitic Statements, Uncleared Samples

0

We are waking up to Kanye West’s new album, “Donda 2.” It’s number 1 on iTunes.

This is despite West’s virulent antisemitism, obsessions with Hitler, gross behavior with his, and his recent confession of gay incest with a cousin until he was 14.

Will “Donda” remain at number 1 after the first flush of release?

This version of Donda 2 is actually the second one. The first came in 2022. It consists of unreleased material from the original Donda 2, outtakes and remakes. One of the songs is called “Heil Hitler.”

Kanye himself posted a take down letter from Free Maiden, a music group run by DeAndre “Free” Maiden, that says he hasn’t cleared samples on the album and owes their producers fees for three years for previous work. They say: “He’s owed us $ for almost 3 years now, has refused to pay yet keeps stealing our work.”

When the album was released to streaming services on Wednesday it was removed. But it’s back up on iTunes and conscience – free Spotify. Tim Cook must be so proud. (Neither service includes the “Heil Hitler” song.)

Kanye can’t post on Instagram, where he’s banned for all his offensive and frankly, disgusting posts. But he’s more than welcome on Twitter X, owned by Elon Musk, where he runs a kind of ghost account that is not easily found because it has a yellow check mark, meaning it’s a Verified Account for which West pays Musk top dollar..

Here’s an example of a post from yesterday:

Kanye West is vile and shouldn’t be remunerated for anything he releases. Yet, here were are at 7:30am.

Among the songs is “Security,” which begins with an attack on ex wife Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner over visitation with their children.

Review: Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” A Slow, Violent Ride Through the Old West Full of Pretty Pictures

0

Everyone knows the story of “Rust” by now. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot dead on set by a gun that went off in the hand of star and producer Alec Baldwin. Director and co-screenwriter Joel Souza was shot in the shoulder. Production stopped. There were lawsuits, settlements, and trials. Baldwin was acquitted, and filming resumed.

Forget the propriety of resuming and finishing “Rust,” a very slow, kind of violent ride through the old West. Hutchins’ husband negotiated an executive producer credit and all proceeds go to him and his dead wife’s son. It’s not a happy story, and some of the people involved looked worse as time went by.

Call this movie “Fake Grit.” The only redeeming feature of it is that “Rust” looks great. Hutchins must have shot at dusk and dawn only to get the buttery light and rich hues of earth tones. A successor, Bianca Cline, finished her work ably. The whole thing looks like Gordon Willis came in a paint brush using his “Godfather” palette. The panoramas are sweeping and stunning, overtaking deliberately told story whose end you can guess in the first 20 minutes.

But it’s style over substance. The screenplay by Baldwin and Souza is Costner Lite for a modern western. The story is one cliche after another: hard livin’, High Noon shoot outs, barroom brawls, the local call girls, an occasional Native American. A lot of men are shot dead, or stabbed, or pulled by their horses. We’ve seen it over and over. Spoiler alert: the actual spine of this story can be found in reruns of “Bonanza” and “Rawhide.”

Baldwin is miscast. While he looks a grizzled old outlaw cowboy, when he speaks it’s Alec Baldwin. He doesn’t attempt an accent and no should he. His famous tenor doesn’t have the gravity or range of the geography. The acting isn’t all wrong. Patrick Scott McDermott, who looks about 14 when this all started, is the real star. His character, Lucas, a lad defending his little brother after their parents have died, is the focus of the film. Frances Fisher, as his great aunt, actually offers verisimilitude. Josh Hopkins, better known from light fare like TV’s “Cougar Town,” acquits himself as the local sheriff carrying tragedy around like a Samsonite.

Everyone involved say they finished “Rust” to honor Hutchins’ memory. When the action comes to the scene where the cinematographer was actually killed, you wonder if that was such a good idea. It gives the movie and prurient and macabre feel, and takes away from fictional drama. But at least Hutchins gets her memorial. She would have gotten a lot of good jobs after this.

Democrats for Trump Must Be Very Proud: “Thanos” Orders End of Public Funding for PBS, NPR

0

Democrats who supported Donald Trump must be very proud right now.

The totalitarian president who we could nickname “Thanos” has signed an executive order to destroy PBS and NPR.

Congrats! This news comes as the AP — which Trump has banned from the White House press room — scoops that Trump’s planning a military parade in his own own honor on his birthday, June 14th, that could cost $100 million. It’s the kind of parade Hilter or Stalin would organize to show the world military strength.

Meanwhile, kidnappings and illegal deportations rage on.

As for PBS and NPR, Trump calls them “biased media.” He wants to eliminate any objective reporting that would cast a negative light on the hundreds of treacherous actions he’s taking.

The Order begins: “National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) receive taxpayer funds through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).”

It’s a smokescreen to destroy freedom of the press while declaring this in the interest of preserving it. This week, only press that kowtows to him as been allowed in the White House to ask his singularly devoted press secretary about his plans.

Here’s a link to the Executive Order. We anxiously await resistance to this absurd move from anyone.

Here’s a full report from ABC News.

Barbra Streisand’s New Duets Album Goes Straight to Number 1 Two Months Before Release

0

I’ve been telling you about Barbra Streisand’s new duets album for over a year.

Yesterday, Columbia Records confirmed all of my reporting. The album features Paul McCartney, Sting, Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande, James Taylor, Hozier, and more.

The Hozier duet is on Roberta Flack’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Produced by Peter Asher, the song is already at number 21 on iTunes today.

The album — which won’t be released until June 27th — has shot to number 1 on Amazon. That’s advance sales. With all those stars, “The Secret of Life: Partners, Vol 2.” looks to be a massive hit, and a big Grammy contender next winter.

Barbra’s first album, “The Barbra Streisand Album,” was released in February 1963. That’s a year before the Beatles came to America. When “Partners, Vol. 2” hits the charts, Streisand will have the record for a hit album in every one of 7 decades.

Is this her last album? Doubtful. She’s just turned 83. Tony Bennett went on for a decade longer. Barbra is just to keep going, going, going!

Richard Kind Sends Up Bill Belichik and Girlfriend in Hilarious John Mulaney Take on a Fake Talk Show

0

Richard Kind has stolen many TV shows, movies, and plays. When he appeared in John Mulaney’s Broadway show, “All In,” this winter, he was the breakthough player.

But he’s always been the standout, whether it was in the Coen Brothers’ “A Simple Man,” or in the recent season of “Only Murders in the Building.”

For the last few weeks, he’s played the sidekick a la Ed McMahon, in Mulaney’s live weekly talk show on Netflix. The show is called “Everybody’s Live.” Each episode is car crash. It’s the updated version of “Fernwood Tonight,” with Kind playing Fred Willard to Martin Mull’s Garth Gimble. It’s a send up of Joe Franklin. It’s also meant to be watched stoned.

Kind is the main reason to watch “Everybody’s Live.” He’s acting totally on his own planet, from another galaxy, and fully in character. He deserves an Emmy Award, but what category would he be in? Best supporting actor in a fake talk show? The show is not a comedy series, technically. Or is it?

Here’s a clip from last night, and I’ll post a few below. All brilliant. PS Kind travels to LA from NY at the beginning of every week. Maybe jet lag is making him this good.

BTW Part of the fun is that Mulaney knows Kind is the gem of his show.

Tony Noms: Denzel Snubbed, Also Kieran Culkin, “Smash,” “Pirates,” “Stranger Things,” Too, Clooney In But Not “Good Night and Good Luck”

0

The major Tony Awards nominees have been announced.

Denzel Washington famous for the $900 ticket, was snubbed the Awards for “Othello.” Neither was Jake Gyllenhaal.

Shock snub: Kieran Culkin in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” which also didn’t receive Best Revival of a Play. But Bob Odenkirk was nommed for Best Featured Actor in a Play for “GGGR.” Kieran won an Oscar and Emmy this year, there was hope he’d pick up a Tony. Not happening!

George Clooney, who also had expensive tickets, was nominated for Best Actor in a Play. But the play, “Good Night and Good Luck” was snubbed for Best Play.

Omitted from the major awards: “Smash,” the musical based on a TV show, and “Pirates: A Penzance Musical” with David Hyde Pierce of “Frasier” fame. Also not nommed, the very expensive play, “Stranger Things.”

Also cut: Rachel Zegler and “Romeo & Juliet.” Also, Robert Downey Jr and his play, “McLean.”

LaTanya Richardson and Harry Lennix are in for leads in “Purpose,” which is nominated for Best Play. They should all win. Also nominated for Best Actor in “Purpose,” is John Michael Hill. “Purpose” will sweep the Tonys.

There were no noms for “Real Women Have Curves,” a musical. None also for the Sondheim revue, “Old Friends.”

Big winner in musicals is “Maybe Happy Ending,” nominated for Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Darren Criss.

The hilarious “Operation Mincemeat” was nominated for Best Musical, but no lead actors.

Musical “Boop” wasn’t nominated, but its star, Jasmine Amy Rogers,” is in as Best Actress in a Musical.

Full list coming…

Broadway: Updating Tony Nominations at 8:30: George Clooney, Denzel, Kieran in the Mix (Watch Here)

0

The Tony Awards nominations begin rolling out at 8:30 this morning.

In the mix potentially: George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kieran Culkin and other Hollywood stars.

Will they be rewarded or snubbed? Did the $900 tickets for their shows daunt the Tony nominators?
