The Obamas Show No RESPECT for Aretha Franklin on Their Summer Playlist, But They Do Like Beyonce, the Spinners, Donny Hathaway, Rolling Stones

0

I love Michelle and Barack Obama. But they’ve snubbed Aretha Franklin on their summer playlist. Now I’m afraid they are ineligible to get the hat she wore at the 2008 inauguration. Not smart, O’s.

Still, they have fine musical taste when it comes to other choices. They liked the Spinners, Dobie Gray, Stevie Wonder, the Black Keys, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Van Morrison. So that’s something. Their modern taste runs to “Senorita,” Beyonce, and Anthony Hamilton among others.

But they included R&B thief Robin Thicke while eschewing Aretha. For that, there is little forgiveness. How could they? And where is Sam and Dave’s “Soul Man,” which Michelle danced to on stage at the White House with Sam Moore?

Plus, in their hearts, the Obamas may be old white hippies. They included “Get Together” by Jesse Colin Young. Oy vey. Pass the Chardonnay.

And really, kids, if you wanted the hat, you should have showed some RESPECT for number 1.

“Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” Becomes Quentin Tarantino’s Second Highest Grossing Movie Today

0

Here’s a fable with a happy ending.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” becomes his second highest grossing movie today, edging out “Inglourious Basterds” at $120 million.

“OUTH” probably won’t top Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” which stands at $162.8 million.  You can’t have everything.

To think that Tarantino started out as a video clerk and became a household name thanks to his nine movies and relentless promotion thanks to Harvey Weinstein.

Tarantino’s first movie, “Reservoir Dogs,” released by Weinstein in 1992, earned just $2 million in its theatrical run. Two years later, “Pulp Fiction” made $100 million and launched Tarantino into celebrity. Both movies have earned millions since then on video and DVD.

Tarantino’s next release will be a baby in six months with his beautiful Israeli born wife, Daniella Pick. Yes, they were married under a chuppah. Mazel tov!

PS “OUTH” will be up for several Oscars, I’m just sayin… including Best Actor, Supporting Actor, Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay.

Whoops! “ET” Online Pre-Publishes a Story About Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello MTV Performance 6 Days Before the Awards Show Happens, by Accident

0

Whoopsy daisy!

Seems like a concocted celebrity romance has been “outed,” so to speak. Pop singers Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello have had a duet hit single out all summer called “Seniorita.” They’ve smartly fueled sales and airplay by using an old Hollywood trick– pretending to have a romance. They’ve been photographed everywhere. I hope they’ve had fun.

But the LA-based entertainment shows that promote this nonsense are certainly in on it. “Entertainment Tonight” is chief among them. So it’s not a surprise that ET’s online staff writes up stories about events before they happen, since it’s all make believe anyway.

Apparently, ET Online published an unfinished story on August 20th about the MTV VMA Awards, which don’t occur until August 26th. The article is about Shawn and Camilla’s “flirty performance” at the Awards– even though none of this has happened yet. But in their minds, it’s already happened, I guess, since it’s all made up anyway.

Ah, Hollywood.

Two of James Franco’s Many (Many) Unreleased Indie-Released Directed Films Coming This Fall to Theaters, Video

0

I can’t even figure out how many unreleased films James Franco has directed and are waiting for some kind of release. A dozen? More, actually.

Two of them are finally appearing in September and October. First up is “Zeroville,” which features Franco with a lot of pals like Seth Rogen and Danny McBride, plus Joey King and Megan Fox. “Zeroville” has been ready for a while but no one wanted it. Now a small distributor called MyCinema will release it with about a dozen or more producers attached.

Second to come, on October 4th, is something called “The Pretenders.” It’s from the tiny B movie distributor Cleopatra Films and will go straight to video with a limited theater presence. This one features Franco with Jack Kilmer (noted as Val Kilmer’s son in press materials), Jane Levy, Shameik Moore, Juno Temple, Brian Cox, and Dennis Quaid. “The Pretenders” also has about 20 or producer credits.

Franco was on a roll with an Oscar nomination for “127 Hours,” but then determined to become an indie director. He’s made a lot — a lot — of films, none of them profitable and nearly all not well reviewed. The best of the bunch, “The Disaster Artist,” earned an Oscar nomination for Scott Neustadter  and Michael H. Weber for Best Adapted Screenplay. The film made a notable $21 million but then Franco was swept into the #MeToo scandals and the whole thing fell apart.

Apart from “Disaster Artist,” the four films credited to Franco as a director on boxofficemojo.com have made a total of $100,000. “Zeroville” and “The Pretenders” will aim to add to that number.

Review: Taylor Swift’s 7th Album, “Lover”: Title Track Shines But 18 Songs Are Too Much, and Too Similar

0

Only a few of the 18 songs on Taylor Swift’s 7th album are much different than what she’s been doing since “1989” turned her into a pop sensation.

A lot of this, you’ve heard before.

Eighteen songs? Too many. This collection would have benefited from pruning. The stand outs are the title track, plus “The Archer,” “Cornelia Street,” and the clever “The Man.”  I might let “Daylight,” the album closer, grow on me.

But a lot of these songs sound the same. Even if the lyrics are interesting, the orchestrations are redundant. Very rarely does it sound like real instruments are being played, and no one involved gets a solo.

Part of the problem is that Swift’s music leaves no tracks. She doesn’t seem to share music influences, almost as if she’s not influenced by anything in music history. Maybe she isn’t. Her songs have no trace of blues, R&B, jazz, reggae, or even country, which used to be her area. What do you call this? Sometimes I’d call it tedious.

I guess what us “old people” find so perplexing about Taylor’s class of pop acts is that you feel their interest is only in money and getting out a release. Even Madonna has musical influences, even if we’re not always crazy about them. But this generation feels like it’s been created, like androids.

Funny: on Spotify, when “Lover” ends, the next Taylor Swift that plays is “All Too Well” from her “Red” album. It’s so far superior to anything on this record, it’s a little sad. “All Too Well” feels so genuine and exciting, you’re surprised it’s the same person. What happened to that collaborator, Liz Rose? I don’t know. And the producer, Nathan Chapman? It’s like Mariah Carey, and her “Vision of Love” collaborator, Ben Margulies. Oh to hear a banjo on “Lover,” or any thing human.

It doesn’t matter what say, “Lover” will sell a million copies this week, set records, pave the way for Taylor’s Stella McCartney line of clothes, and so on. We’re not in Kansas, anymore.

Summer Box Office Hell: Warners Shuts Down Flop “The Kitchen” After 3 Weeks, Drops Almost All Theaters

0

Melissa McCarthy must wonder what the heck is going on with her career. Earlier this year she was nominated for an Oscar in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” She’s a terrific actress and comedian. She won an Emmy for playing Sean Spicer so hilariously on “SNL.”

But her new movie, “The Kitchen,” is such a dud that Warner Bros. is pulling it almost completely from release on Friday. According to Exhibitor Relations, hey’re cutting its run from 2,700 theaters to just around 600. It’s over, dead, gone.

So far “The Kitchen” has earned just $11 million in its two and a half weeks. It’s been a big disappointment was Warners, as it co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss. They must also wonder what’s going on.

But no liked “The Kitchen.” Reviews were terrible. It has a very low 22 rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Warners is in the soup right now. “Blinded by the Light” is also DOA after 5 days in release. They’ve made around $6 million (rounding up), but it’s over. The Bruce Springsteen-scored movie was supposed to be a big hit. Only, no one did marketing or publicity. The audience was confused, since “Yesterday,” a similar movie, is just finishing its run and has made $70 million. What a mess.

Now Warners is grappling with “It,” Chapter 2. The first installment was a monster hit. But now there’s been very mixed to bad reaction to early screenings. “It” hits on September 6th, and reviews will be held up to the last minute. This sounds like strike 3 in a bad summer.

The good news for Warners is that they’ve got “The Goldfinch,” which everyone has high hopes for, and “The Joker,” which should be a smash. In December they’ll have Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell movie. I’ve also heard great things about “The Good Liar” with Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen. So the fall will exceed the summer, and then no one will remember the bad times.

Lana Del Rey Drops Double Video for Two New Songs, “F It, I Love You” and “The Greatest”

Lana del Rey just dropped a double video for two new songs. One is called “F— It, I Love You” and the other is “The Greatest.”

Lana’s new album, “Norman F—– Rockwell” comes out August 30th, just in time for the Grammy cut off. It was postponed to make way for Billie Eilish, who also sings in a little girl voice, and is younger.

But Lana prevails.

Miley Cyrus Admits Shocking Reason She Was Fired from “Hotel Transylvania” Movie in 2012 and Replaced by Selena Gomez

0

In 2012, Miley Cyrus was hired to voice a character in the animated film “Hotel Transylvania.” She was going to play voice Mavis, the daughter of Dracula (Adam Sandler), in the Sony Picture Animation production.

But before shooting began, she left and was replaced by singer Selena Gomez. No reason was given.

Now on Twitter today Miley admits she was fired. She writes: “I got kicked off hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it.”

Cyrus was 19 at the time. This, and other extreme acts regarding sex, don’t seem very balanced or well considered. I know she was reacting to “Hannah Montana,” but at some point all of this quite bizarre.

MIley Cyrus Posts Long Statement on Divorce from Liam Hemsworth: “I have nothing to hide…I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating”

0

Miley Cyrus, 26, has posted a multi part Tweet to her fans and followers explaining herself re her divorce from Liam Hemsworth. This lady has guts, and she never holds back. Recently, she’s been in public making out with another woman, and there’ve been plenty of sightings of her carrying on, so to speak. Her long romantic history included a relationship with Hemsworth, a break up, a period of Twerking, posing nude, and doing drugs, followed by her make up with Hemsworth, going G rated, marrying the actor, declaring she was queer, and then these new developments.

Here’s what she says:

I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where i was when I was a younger. BUT at this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar.

I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.

But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled,I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here. I’ve learned from every experience in my life. I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring. I’ve grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP.

There are probably more nudes of me on the internet than maybe any woman in history.

I swung on a wrecking ball naked.

I got kicked off hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it.

It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20’s. I have not only smoked, but advocated for weed, I’ve experimented with drugs, my biggest song to date is about dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom.

I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100% of the time. What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed. I have nothing to hide.

UPDATE: Michael Jackson’s Estate Says Ex-PR, Manager Raymone Bain Is Not Authorized to Use King of Pop’s Name for Any Purpose, Charitable or Commercial

0

RESPONSE FROM MICHAEL JACKSON ESTATE
Raymone Bain is not authorized to act on behalf of the Michael Jackson Estate nor to use Michael Jackson’s name in any way for charitable or her own commercial purposes.

Earlier:

Raymone Bain will not give up. Her fifteen minutes of fame thanks to Michael Jackson ended a decade ago but that won’t stop her from trying to cash in on Michael.

Today she announced she’s starting a new “foundation” called “MJ Legacy.” Michael’s Estate will shut this down before dinner.

I feel bad for Raymone, even with her crazy new hairdo. (See video.) She sued the Estate, she exploited  her association with Michael, she keeps looking for a way back in.

You’ll see from the video that there are few people at her press conference. Please, Raymone, stop this. It’s funny, granted, but don’t we have bigger issues in this world?

OMG– she says “Michael Jackson has been a victim over and over again.” Yes– and she’s the victimizer! LOL! She must leave this man and his family alone.
