The Great Graham Parker Hits New York’s City Winery This Monday, Still Squeezing Out Sparks

0

If you don’t have tickets to see Graham Parker this coming Monday at City Winery in New York you may be in trouble. The place is pretty much sold out on short notice.

When I look at the field of pop stars offered to today’s generation, I have to laugh. There was a time when we had Parker, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Garland Jeffreys, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds. Those guys were and still are the real thing.

Graham Parker isn’t in the Rock Hall of Fame, doesn’t care, has gone his own way, and brought with him a magnificent legacy. His stand out album remains “Squeezing Out Sparks,” but that’s only part of a huge catalog catchy, idiosyncratic songs. Look, this was a guy who put out an indie single called “Mercury Poisoning” to get off his label. (Still one of the best ever new wave tracks.)

Parker’s snarling voice is more closely associated with R&B heavy rock, but he even had a top 40 hit back in the day, the kind of record he probably hated (like the Pretenders’ “I Stand by You”) but so radio friendly it’s still drifing through the money making middle of the road. Me, I go for “Heat Treatment.”

Whether you like GP all sweet and ballady or rough and rockin’ I’m sure he’ll serve up both and everything else on Monday. It’s been far too long.

Box Office: “The French Dispatch” Expands to 788 Theaters Despite A Week of Steady Decline

0

Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” has not been an easy release.

Postponed for over a year, the triptych film opened last Friday in just 52 theaters and headed into a steady decline. Every single day since the opening the numbers went down. Yesterday, Thursday, saw a drop of over 81% in 6 days, from $556K to $102k.

Yikes.

Despite this, Searchlight is taking a Hail Mary pass and expanding the all-star experience to 788 theaters this weekend. Will it work? Will audiences flock to a movie that some critics openly hated and preview audiences walked out of?

Here’s the deal if you’re a Wes Anderson fan and are on the fence about “The French Dispatch”: it’s three separate stories. The only through line is that Bill Murray runs a kind of faux-twee French based version of The New Yorker. He’s in the movie a little bit, and Elisabeth Moss even less. I really liked first chapter, with Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, and Tilda Swinton.

But the next two chapters, while amusing and cast with celebrities, become mired in diminishing returns. By the end you’ll need a cappuccino. Which isn’t it say that the production values aren’t as high as possible and completely original. It’s a worthwhile project. But it’s not up to Anderson’s best work. Here’s hoping his next one is more cohesive.

PS Searchlight, which won the last couple of Best Picture Oscars with “Nomadland” and “The Shape of Water,” may not be in the hunt this year. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” didn’t cut it, and “French Dispatch” will merit art noms only. Their last card is the Guillermo del Toro horror film, “Nightmare Alley,” which everyone is crossing fingers for.

SPOILER: Steve Carell Finally Extricates Himself from “The Morning Show” Mess, Gets Back to Movies

If you watch Apple’s “The Morning Show,” then you know what’s happened. And if you don’t, I’ll tell you anyway:

Steve Carell is out of the series, at last.

In Episode 7, Carell’s Mitch, who was a very unlikable and irredeemable Matt Lauer like character, dies in a car accident, possible suicide. It was a season too late, but alright, we’ll take it.

I could not understand why Carell, a terrific actor with a great resume, would take on this role. There was nothing good about Mitch, and no way to bring him back from his long list of malfeasance. He caused incredible heartbreak, and death. He was a liar and a cheat. Didn’t anyone explain this to Carell up front? Now he can read Katie Couric’s book to get a better handle on it.

Carell is lined up for a new series called “The Patient,” about a troubled psychotherapist. But he really has to get back to genial comedies. He’s done well with drama — see him in “Foxcatcher” — but enough is enough. Play to your strengths! Goodbye and good riddance to Mitch!

Hannah Gutierrez, in Charge of the Guns on “Rust,” Says Extremely Difficult to Focus On Her Job Because She Had Two

0

Here’s the statement from the lawyers for Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the “armorer” who was supposed to be in charge of the guns on the set of Alec Baldwin’s “Rust.”

This statement is really peculiar. Hannah says she had two jobs on the set and so was too busy to be focused on either one. What? There’s also a big typo in the statement, unlike RHnot is a word in New Mexico. I just don’t get it.

Gutierrez-Reed and Assistant Director Dave Halls have a lot to answer for. A woman is dead, her son is without a mother, a family has lost their beloved daughter, wife. For nothing. For stupidity.

Olivia Munn Makes Strange Appearance on Seth Meyers’ Talk Show, No Mention of John Mulaney

0

Olivia Munn is in New York for the premiere of her movie, “Violet,” but she didn’t appear in studio last night on Seth Meyers’ talk show. Instead, she Zoomed in, and didn’t mention the elephant in the room. Or she kinda did.

Munn talked a lot about the impending birth of her child but not about its father, John Mulaney, who is also Meyers’ close friend. Mulaney announced the birth not too long ago on Meyers’ show. But Mulaney’s name only comes up as “John” in reference to his height in an anecdote Munn related about a family friend guessing her baby’s height.

Hmmm…Rumours abound that Mulaney and Munn have broken up after their whirlwind affair, Mulaney’s drug rehab, his divorce, and his subsequent comedy tour in which he discusses his intervention and rehab. Neither Munn or Mulaney have addressed the possible rehab, and Mulaney is about to start another leg of his tour tomorrow night in San Diego.

A strange night on Seth Meyers. It demands A Closer Look, by someone. Like Amber Ruffin. Now that would have been funny!

Katie Couric Calls Ex Ohio Governor John Kasich “A Tool” for Demeaning Her Job at Yahoo News

0

I kind of love Katie Couric’s book, “Going There.” She’s unsparing and mean to everyone. She doesn’t give a hoot. She’s had it. She’s 65, has money, is married to a rich guy, and figures, why not?

I wish I could do that.

In “Going There,” she devotes a chapter to her short stint at Yahoo News, how stupid and out of touch the people were, and how Marissa Mayer was maybe the most oblivious CEO she ever met. LOL. I get it. For years I’ve tried to make contact with people at Yahoo News only to be ignored. So Katie isn’t wrong.

At one point while she was there, Yahoo News became known as Oath, which Katie observes is close to “Oaf.” I agree.

Anyway. She says she couldn’t get Mayer to give her any resources or pay attention to her. That when Katie wanted to big names for Yahoo News, she had  no leverage and that Mayer didn’t care to help her. She says when she finally had lunch with Mayer it was at the decrepit Le Bonne Soup on West 55th St., a place that should have closed in 1990. (The main media restaurant, Michael’s, is right down the street. Katie must have been fuming to meet in such a dump!)

Katie writes: “I’d later learn this was Marissa’s MO. Not returning emails (and certainly not anything as old-school as a phone call), showing up for dinners with clients when they were already on dessert, leaving powerful people waiting for hours outside her office. Apparently there was a long line of major players who’d left the sprawling Yahoo campus in Sunnyvale, California, feeling less sunny than irate.”

Mayer’s dismissive treatment of her meant Katie couldn’t get interviews with big shots like Hilary Clinton, Donald Trump, or even former Ohio governor John Kasich. On two separate occasions she tried to interview him.

Each time, Kasich asked her:

“Katie, can I ask you a question? You used to be the anchor of the CBS Evening News— now you’re with Yahoo News. What is that like for you?” Twice he did that.

Couric writes: I’d just about had it with this tool. “I don’t know, Governor Kasich,” I said. “You used to be running for president of the United States, and pretty soon you’re going to be out of a job. What is that like for you?”

Well played. I hope she really said to him, too. (PS Mayer eventually got fired for almost burning Yahoo down, and things haven’t improved since then.)

“Going There” is on sale now at independent book stores and amazon, too.

PS I hear Katie had a swell book party last night hosted by former mayor Mike Bloomberg. (Our invite was probably in spam.)

Ex-One Direction Singer Zayn Malik Posts Angry Denial of Domestic Abuse Rumor Concerning Yolanda Hadid

0

Ex One Direction singer Zayn Malik has just posted a disturbing message to Twitter.

Seems TMZ says the grandmother of his child, Yolanda Hadid, mother of Gigi Hadid and ex wife of David Foster, claims he hit her when she visited her daughter’s home.

TMZ is all over this. They even stalked Yolanda Hadid in New York today and asked if this was all true. She ignored them.

But the situation is weird enough that Zayn has posted the following message to Twitter. Zayn is a quiet guy who has not had the success, obviously, of fellow bandmates after quitting the group before it went on permanent hiatus. Something is fishy here and of course TMZ will exacerbate it.

Did Zayn hit Yolanda at all? Was there a miscommunication? Is TMZ just making this whole thing up? So far no charges have been filed and nothing has been said by any of the parties publicly.

UPDATE: Zayn and Gigi have broken up apparently. I’m shocked these two kids couldn’t make it.

In New D Movie Straight to Video, Bruce Willis Is Second-Billed to Former Soap Star Patrick Muldoon

0

The trashing of Bruce Willis’s legacy, whatever that was, continues apace.

His latest is a D movie going straight to video and to airplanes called “Deadlocked.” Bruce, once the highest paid movie star in the world, now gets second billing to former soap star Patrick Muldoon. (Muldoon takes the place here of fill in the blank Frank Grillo, Chad Michael Murray, whatever younger failed soap star turned action hero is available. It’s the formula.)

“Deadlock” is directed by Jared Cohn, who has a decade’s worth of credits for movies no one has ever heard of. In the trailer, Bruce says little and doesn’t move around much. It looks like all his work was done in one day and cut up into various scenes. Otherwise they use a stand in. I’m not sure if Bruce has any idea what’s going on, and it’s getting worse.

“Deadlock” has no fewer than 17 Executive Producers! And three more people with producer credits (they probably did the work). One of the EPs is of course Stephen J. Eads, who I’m starting to wonder about. And so should Bruce’s wife, Emma, and his wife, Demi Moore. There are now trashbins full of these things. There are no fewer than 10– TEN– more coming soon!

Michael Jackson Musical “MJ” Casts Young Michaels and Young Marlon, Previews Begin December 6th

0

“MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical” is coming. Previews begin December 6th on Broadway.

The show announced casting today: Walter Russell III from Harlem, New York, and Christian Wilson from Norfolk, Virginia, will alternate in the role of “Little Michael.” Also announced was Devin Trey Campbell from Bronx, New York, who will play the role of “Little Marlon.”

Tickets are on sale now. So far, it’s show, but that’s par for the course along Broadway. This show will live an die on the performances. The kids will wow audiences, and if the dancing is great and the singing is right, “MJ” could be a big hit. It’s all about Michael from childhood through “Thriller,” with no bad stuff. There’s a lot of pressure on star Myles Frost, but I’ll bet he can do it.
