“Jeopardy!” Queen: Amy Schneider Beats Matt Amodio’s Record of 38 Wins in a Row, Becomes Number 2 on All Time List

0

On “Jeopardy” tonight, a record.

Amy Schneider beat Matt Amodio’s 38-game streak, becoming the contestant with the second highest number of consecutive wins in the show’s history.

Schneider has a long way to go to beat Ken Jennings’s 74-game streak from 2004, which remains the longest in history. Jennings is also host of the show currently, which would be an irony of ironies.

For now, though, Schneider’s run is driving “Jeopardy!” ratings. She is the Tom Brady of “Jeopardy!” that’s for sure. The other contestants sort of stare at her in disbelief.

How long can this on for? So far Schneider has earned a total of $1,319,800. Schneider wasn’t so smart on tonight’s show, however. She bet $25,000 on Final Jeopardy and lost. The answer was the Field Museum in Chicago. She didn’t get it. But she still picked up $12,700 today.

Taylor Swift Insulted (Rightly So) Over Accusation in L.A. Times That She Doesn’t Write Her Own Songs

0

Taylor Swift is absolutely justified to be mad at singer Damon Albarn of the group Blur. He asserts in the LA Times today that Swift doesn’t write her own songs. WTF? You can be critical of Swift, I guess, on some matters but not penning her own material? That’s utterly ridiculous.

After Albarn says this in a Q&A with Mikael Wood, here’s the exchange:

Wood: Of course she does. Co-writes some of them.
Albarn: That doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody, I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes.

Taylor Swift writes plenty of songs without co-writers. She certainly writes her own lyrics. If she gives credit to Jack Antonoff or anyone else I’m sure it’s because they help on orchestration or arrangement. Taylor Swift is one artist I have no doubts about when it comes to writing music.

Also, does that mean every famous songwriting team in history were not songwriters? From Lennon-McCartney and Jagger-Richards to Goffin-King, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein or Lorenz Hart, Ashford and Simpson, Holland Dozier Holland, and so on? Just stupid.

Taylor’s comments below, followed by Antonoff.

Swift 1, Albarn 0.

Review: Two Time Oscar Winner Mahershala Ali Shouldn’t Be Overlooked This Time Around in “Swan Song”

0

Oscar voting starts Thursday and one performance that should not be overlooked is Mahershala Ali’s nuanced turn playing two identical characters in the moody and melancholic Apple TV Plus’s “Swan Song.”

Benjamin Cleary wrote and directed this taut, emotionally gripping sci-fi drama. Ali plays Cameron, an artist in the near future who has terminal cancer. He has kept it a secret from his loving wife (Naomie Harris) and young son Cory (Dax Rey.) Enter Dr. Jo Scott, played with chilling perfection by Glenn Close, who has the cure/answer, but not really. Dr. Scott can recreate Cameron’s body and brain and upload his memories, even the darkest, most troubling ones, buried deep in his subconscious into a new identical body named Jack (also played by Ali.) Cameron has a short time to live and a short time to give his life over to Jack, and Jack will only know he’s Jack and not Cameron for a brief time as well.

“Swan Song” could be complicated if not for the clear, understated and thrilling performance of Ali. He is consistently heartbreaking and luminous on screen, one of the most accomplished actors working today. Awkwafina also deserves a shout out as a fellow dying patient who turned her life over to a double. Awards tastemaker Colleen Camp is making sure that this film is being giving the respect it should, she recently hosted a Q & A moderated by Barry Jenkins with Ali and Harris, and she’s right once again. Ali’s internal struggle is what makes his powerhouse performance in “Swan Song” worthy of an Oscar nod.

Ex-Rock Star Eric Clapton, Slow Mind, Triples Down Anti-Vax Babble: “Mass hypnosis”

0

You’ve got to see this to believe it. Eric Clapton is tripling down on his anti-vax babble with a new video interview. He found some guy in Florida to conduct this crazy interview in which Clapton says that before the pandemic he allowed a doctor to give him many shots for pain in his back. But when virus came he bridled at the idea of a vaccine. He’s a total nut job.

Clapton also says that before the pandemic he thought his career was over. (Not sure why he thought that.) He says that people getting the vaccine under some kind of “mass hypnosis.”

It’s really sad to see that Clapton has spiraled down into being a cranky conspiracy theorist who’s lost his mind.

“I have a calling and I can make use of it,” he says. Thanks, no.

Baby You’re a Rich Man If You Want to Buy Julian Lennon’s Beatles Memorabilia as NFTs

0

Julian Lennon is auctioning off some of prized Beatles memorabilia.

Well, not really. They’re going to be NFTs– non fungible tokens in the pretend world. He’s keeping the items.

The tokens will include exclusive images of the items with video memories supplied by Julian.

“As an artist, I have great respect for all that my father accomplished in his career,” Julian Lennon said in a statement. “As a son, I hold dear the good memories I have of my time with him. I feel incredibly lucky to live in a day and age where innovation allows me to share such personal pieces of my Lennon family history. Through this NFT collection, I’m able to grant exclusive access to special items that I cherish and carry on the legacy of my father in a new way.”

The Lennon Connection: The NFT Collection sale will take place online on Feb. 7 via Julien’s Auctions. It includes Paul McCartney’s handwritten lyrics to “Hey Jude,” John Lennon’s “Magical Mystery Tour” Afghan coat, the black cape John wore in “Help!” and three Lennon Beatles guitars. Again, you don’t get to have these items in your house. You have the virtual version of them.

Julian is in a tough spot, which is why he’s looking for ways to raise money. John Lennon was murdered in 1980, leaving all his estate to Yoko Ono. Julian eventually had to sue Yoko for some part of the estate and reportedly settled on $25 million.

That’s chicken scratch compared to what Lennon’s Beatles and solo records and publishing are worth now– probably $500 million. All of that goes to Yoko and her son Sean Ono Lennon. It’s inequitable to say the least. Julian and Sean should be splitting their father’s estate in half.

But that’s the way it is. Of course Lennon never expected to die at age 40. But he should have had some plan laid out even then. Artists– you gotta love ’em. The nice thing is, Julian and Sean seem to have a very good relationship as brothers.

Bob Dylan’s Blood, in the Tracks: Nobel Prize Winner Sells All His Master Recordings to Sony Music

0

Bob Dylan has finished selling out and cashing in.

He’s sold all his master recordings, current, past, and future, to Sony Music for an undisclosed amount. This follows Dylan selling all his publishing rights last year to Universal Music for over $300 million.

Dylan, on his way to 81 years old. has always recorded for Sony’s Columbia Records except for a brief break in 1974 when his “Planet Waves” came out on David Geffen’s Asylum Records.

“Columbia Records and Rob Stringer have been nothing but good to me for many, many years and a whole lot of records,” said Dylan in a statement. “I’m glad that all my recordings can stay where they belong.”

Stringer said: “Columbia Records has had a special relationship with Bob Dylan from the beginning of his career and we are tremendously proud and excited to be continuing to grow our 60-year partnership. Bob is one of music’s greatest icons and an artist of unrivaled genius. The essential impact he and his recordings continue to have on popular culture is second to none, and we’re thrilled he will now be a permanent member of the Sony Music family. We are excited to work with Bob and his team to find new ways to make his music available to his many fans today and to future generations.”

Stringer has now locked down Springsteen and Dylan. He still to cement Sony with Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett, and then he’ll have the main Columbia-Sony musicians in the catalog til the end of time.

Why are legacy artists selling their rights for huge cash sums? Because they are older, touring is an issue for making money. and they want their estates to be in order. There will be more of this is in the year to come as record companies and publishers will be eyeing the likes of catalogs from Sting, Steven Tyler, and many others.

Sundance Review: Emma Thompson Naked and Unafraid in Stunning “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”

0

Sundance: Oscar winner Emma Thompson (“Howard’s End”) has always been an uncommonly fine actress, whether she was the painfully restrained but deeply caring housemistress in “Remains of the Day” or the painfully restrained but deeply caring Elinor Dashwood in “Sense and Sensibility” (she also got an Oscar for writing the screenplay). You may know her as Nanny McPhee. or as the Baroness in “Cruella.”

Now she’s gone and done something quite extraordinary. At the age of 61, Thompson appears naked in more ways than one in Sophie Hyde’s “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” The movie is “written and created by” Katy Brand, who appeared in the “Nanny McPhee” sequel in 2010 and must be a friend of Thompson. (This movie has strange credits, by the way).

You’d almost think that “Leo Grande” is an adapted play. But it’s not. It’s an original, very original in fact, in its whole execution. I’m not sure how it will get away with an R rating, but who cares? This much is certain: Thompson will be heaped on with awards in 2023. So get ready.

Thompson plays “Nancy” (not her real name), a widow and retired school teacher who hires “Leo” (not his real name) for sexual instruction. They meet in a hotel. Leo is played Daryl McCormack, who looks a little goofy in real life but a hot hombre in the film. He’s going to help Nancy have her first orgasm ever and enjoy her body for the first time in her life.

The conversation between Nancy and Leo is frank and modern. And as Nancy peels off clothes, she also peels herself off like an onion. In doing so, she also seeks to find Leo’s layers, so when they’re not naked and having sex (a glut of which comes at the end of the film) they are finding out important stuff about each other.

Thompson is brave– not because she’s fully unclothed without help from the makeup or props department. Her courage is in allowing herself, an Oscar and Emmy winner with lots of other accolades, explore an intimate world we don’t see in films nowadays. She was one of Mike Nichols’ favorite actresses, and you can see why. She’s willing to plumb depths of her soul.

Other reviews I’ve glanced at talk about this movie being “sex positive” which is lingo for 2022. Brand reaches some nice conclusions and resolutions, the kind you won’t see on Lifetime or Hallmark. “Leo Grande” may shake up the landscape when it finally gets released. In the old days Miramax would have picked this up and gotten Oscar nods for everyone involved. LionsGate has it in the UK. I’m curious to see what happens in the U.S.

PS This is a total aside, but Sundance is brimming with terrific performances by actresses directed by women director. Case in point: Elizabeth Banks in “Call Jane.” More on that in my next piece.

Exclusive: Adele Was Using Non-Union Musicians in Las Vegas Gig, Opposite of Pro-Union Lady Gaga

0

The difference between Adele and Lady Gaga, at least in Las Vegas.

Gaga has been using union musicians since she started performing there a couple of years ago. Adele has not.

Keith D. Nelson, secretary/treasurer of the Musicians Union in Las Vegas, Local 369, says that the band for Adele’s now cancelled 13 “Weekends” gig — 26 shows– had gone outside the normal system to bring in musicians.

According to sources, the band — even though they weren’t part of the union — was rehearsing up to the moment Adele announced the “rescheduling” of the 13 weekends.

When musicians are needed for a show anywhere they are usually brought in through a local “contractor.” But I’m told that Adele used a contractor no one ever heard of, out of Canada, to go around the Local.

Nevada is one of 28 “right to work states” which allows employees to take work in unionized settings even if they’re not members of the union. The other states in this group are mainly poor and “red.” Nevada, ironically, is considered “blue” and financially sound thanks to gambling.

Wait: isn’t Adele supposed to be from working class roots? “They’re attempting union busting,” says Nelson. When Adele was on tour for her “25” album, in places like Radio City Music Hall, she had to have union musicians. This turn of events may be why she wanted to “sit down” in Vegas rather than hit the road.

Nelson adds that Adele is not alone in Las Vegas looking for workers who will go outside the pre-ordained system. But this way, the musicians are without rights if something should happen to their show. In this case, Adele’s band may be up a creek without a paddle.

Nelson says Lady Gaga is the most popular performer in Vegas these days because she observes all union rules with her musicians. I’m not surprised. We know Stefani Germanotta is a mensch.

It’s unclear what happens to the non union musicians now that their Adele has been cancelled, er, rescheduled. They’re not working. Let’s see if they get paid for the 16 weeks.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Play: Actor Playing Adult Title Character Fired for Sexual Misbehavior

0

It’s not just COVID causing trouble on Broadway.

Over at “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” there are other issues of substance. Today it was announced that the actor who’s been playing the adult Harry Potter for almost two years has been fired.

James Snyder was dismissed after an independent investigation that began in November. Snyder acted inappropriately with Diane Davis, the actress who played his wife, Ginny. Snyder is married and has two children.

Snyder and Davis were replacements for original cast members. They started around the same time, in February and March 2019.

“The Cursed Child” started out as two plays, Parts 1 and 2, but was combined into one when it returned from the Broadway lockdown. There are a lot jokes on the internet now about Harry Potter and his magic wand, but we won’t go there. It’s bad enough that Davis’s name is out there. She’s the victim, but bravo to her for her courage in this matter.

A statement from the production states in full:

“On November 19, 2021, the producers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the first time received a complaint from Diane Davis regarding the conduct of fellow cast member James Snyder. Immediately upon receiving this complaint, the producers commissioned an independent investigation by a third party, and Mr. Snyder was suspended pending the investigation’s completion.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the producers decided Mr. Snyder should not return to the production and terminated his contract. Ms. Davis has made the personal decision to take a leave of absence. Out of respect for her privacy—and to maintain the integrity of the investigation—we will make no further comment regarding the matter.

We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive workplace, which is why we have robust workplace policies and procedures in place for all those involved in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This includes strict prohibitions against harassment in any form, as well as channels through which any employee can report conduct that they believe is inappropriate. We will continue to do all we can to ensure the extremely talented team that brings this production to life feels safe, empowered, and fully supported.”

Box Office: “Spider Man 8” Climbs Back to Number 1, Knocking Off “Scream 5”:

0

Spider Man, Spider Man does whatever ais  spider can.

In this case, “Spider Man: No Way Home” does the unexpected and climbs back to number 1 with a $14 million weekend. The 8th Spider Man movie knocked off “Scream 5,” which did a respectable $12 million but finished second.

“No Way Home” is now comfortably lodged at number 4 on the all time box office list with $721 million. It has $40 million to go to over take “Avatar” at number 3.

The rest of the box office is uneventful. Something called “The King’s Daughter” opened on over 2,000 screens and made just $750,000. So much for that whatever it was.

“The King’s Man” is stalling at $31 million. Luckily it’s made $73 million abroad. How do you like that? They loved it in South Korea, France, and Mexico the most. Go figure.

PS The “Spider Man” success has not crossed over for Zendaya in her HBO series, “Euphoria.” The series had 279,000 viewers last week on HBO Prime. The series is rated for adults and everyone over my age for being X rated and sort of ridiculous. If high school were really just a sex party, everyone would go back immediately!
