Johnny Depp’s Career Had Already Tanked Long Before the Amber Heard Marriage, Divorce, and Trial

0

Now that the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial is over, it’s time to get a grip on reality.

Depp’s career was already in the tank long before he and Heard put on their cavalcade of horrors for all the world to see.

The misery of Depp’s resume has nothing to do with Heard. Aside from “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, his list of roles in box office flops was well chronicled here and in other places.

Maybe you’ve forgotten “The Lone Ranger,” a spectacular failure in which he played Tonto. How about “Mortdecai”? Or “Black Mass”? Surely you remember “Transcendence”? ($23 million total). Or “Richard Says Goodbye”? ($325K– not sure it was ever released.)

Even “Alice Through the Looking Glass” was a bust in this country– $77 million, although it did well abroad where English comprehension wasn’t an issue. Then there’s “London Fields,” the movie that brought him together with Heard. When it was finally released after many swipes at re-cutting, the film was seen by no one.

Depp has had four flops just since 2019 including the most recent, “Minimata,” which made $610K abroad, has no domestic box office. The others were worse.

As for the “Pirates” movies, they declined in box office successively over the years. The last one, in 2017, was a big hit internationally but made $172 million here. The foreign crowd is nothing to sneeze at. Depp is a name in the worldwide market in the right project. But here, at least five or more years ago, his star was on the wane.

So let’s not heap all the blame on Amber Heard. Johnny Depp was the architect of his own self-destruction. Even another “Pirates” movie might not resurrect him.

Review: HBO Max’s “Hacks” Comes to A Brilliant and Maybe Permanent End with Season 2 Finale

0

“Hacks” has turned out to be an enormous gem for HBO Max. Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, and the whole cast have managed to synthesize a lot of different gourmet ingredients into a very special meal.

We watched the first six episodes of Season 2 gratefully, digging the whole Deborah Vance on the comeback trail tour bus through the south and west. There were a lot of terrific guest stars, too, including Polly Draper, Laurie Metcalf, and most movingly, Harriet Harris (who I think deserves a guest Emmy nomination).

The show tried to shoehorn in some subplots with other characters but “Hacks” is what they call a two-hander. It’s about Deborah and Ava, Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. They’re the Lucy and Ethel, Mary and Rhoda, Jerry and Newman whose relationship is so perfectly executed we can’t take our eyes off of them. They could go on and on forever.

But now the final two episodes of Season 2 have arrived, and it seems like they will not go on forever. For whatever reason, “Hacks” ends with an ending. All loose ends are wrapped up satisfyingly. I was a little surprised actually. I’m sure it has to do with not knowing if HBO would ask them back. But still…it’s unclear what they would do now if they did return.

This second and possibly final season of “Hacks” did not compete with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” last time around because the latter show was off season thanks to the pandemic. This time, they will go head to head at the Emmys in September. Last time, “Hacks” took Best Actress in a Comedy and Best Direction of a Comedy. It lost Best Comedy to “Ted Lasso.”

This time around there will be more competition. Now Rachel Brosnahan’s marvelous performance as “Mrs. Maisel” will be in the mix. But it will be tough going. Jean Smart is off the charts good. Everything about “Hacks” soars. If this is the last season, it will be much missed. I hope there’s a plan for a season three. (I guess Ava could get to run her own sitcom starring Deborah.) If not, “Hacks” will remain something great in TV history.

Box Office: “Top Gun” Will Cross $200 Million Today After 7 Days, “Downton Abbey” Building Audience

0

Big news: tonight “Top Gun: Maverick” will cross the $200 million mark. It opened one week ago tonight. That’s just 7 days. Last night, the sequel to the mid 80s film made $14 million, mid week. There’s no sign of a slowdown. Still waiting for updates on international numbers…

“Downton Abbey: A New Era” is hitting $32 million tonight and could be at $40 million by Sunday. The audience is building slowly. I went back to see it on Sunday afternoon and the place was filled. It wasn’t just senior citizens, either. There were young people, not white, and they told me they’d become fans of the TV series. So “DA” cuts across everything.

Disney announced today that “Doctor Strange 2” will go to DisneyPlus on June 22nd. It will be 45 days and $900 million worldwide when that happens. So everyone’s happy, especially Benedict Cumberbatch, who didn’t have to wait for a great drama and an Oscar to make his career. He’s set for life. But it would be nice if he had those other things one day, too.

Cyndi Lauper’s Famous Mother, Game for Anything, Passes Away at Age 91

0

Condolences to Cyndi Lauper. Her mother, Catrine, with whom she was very close, has passed away age 91.

Cyndi wrote on social media: “I feel so lucky that I got to play with my mom throughout my life, both as a girl and as a woman. She may have left this world, but not without leaving her mark. Thank you, Mom. I love you.”

Catrine Lauper appeared in Cyndi’s video, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” back in 1984. She also appeared in the videos for “Time After Time” and “Goonies.” In recent years Cyndi reported that her mom was suffering from dementia.

This is a tough one for Cyndi and her family.

Hear the First Song from “Almost Famous” the Musical Coming to Broadway This Fall

0

Cameron Crowe’s great movie, “Almost Famous,” is coming to Broadway as a musical this fall.

They’ve released a song called “Everybody’s Coming Together” that sounds like Tom Petty meets “Hair.” That’s not a bad thing. But “Almost Famous” isn’t about a revolution, as the song says. It’s about a 16 year old reporter coming of age covering a rock band for Rolling Stone. So we’ll see. I really hope it’s good.

The show has no ‘name’ performers but stars of appealing newcomers. Tom Kitt wrote the songs. Derek McLane designed the sets. Jeremy Herrin directs. The show opens in a still to named Shubert Theater in October, with previews beginning September 13th.

Kellyanne Conway Couldn’t Con Book Buyers: Just 25,000 in Sales for “Here’s the Deal”

Here’s the deal: Kellyanne Conway’s book is a dud.

The memoir of her time lying to the American people and making a mockery of everything is sales fizzle.

“Here’s the Deal” sold just 25,000 copies in its first week. The second week should be a lot less, too. The book has already dropped to number 126 on amazon’s best seller list.

Compare Conway’s sales to those of Donald Trump’s dissenting niece, Mary Trump. Her first book, “Too Much and Never Enough,” clocked 1.35 million in his debut week. Michelle Obama? Her “Becoming” was well over a million, as well. And even Donald Trump himself sold about 240,000 copies of a coffee table book last winter, which is now being used as a large coaster. (It was self published by Trump’s self-parody of a son, Donald Jr.)

“Here’s the Deal” is published by Threshold Editions, a sub imprint at Simon & Schuster founded by conservative pundit and former Reagan-Bush lieutenant Mary Matalin, who’s still married after all these years to outspoken liberal and Clinton disciple James Carville.

Conway became famous for making stuff up during her incessant yakking on TV as Donald Trump’s spokesperson. She invented the “Battle of Bowling Green” among other things. Her infamy rose as her husband, George Conway, began tweeting against Trump on an hourly basis. Then her teenage daughter, Claudia, turned against her publicly. Seeing the writing on the wall, that Trump would lose the 2020 election, Conway resigned in August 2020.

(Watch) Mick Jagger Sing “Out of Time” for First Time Ever as Rolling Stones Hit Madrid

0

This is crazy. Until last night, the Rolling Stones never played their 1966 hit “Out of Time” on stage. They included the crazy catchy song in their first show in Madrid last night.

Why? Who knows? I always hoped to hear it. “Out of Time” opened the great Hal Ashby movie, “Coming Home,” in 1977. That’s when it was rediscovered. Previously, “Out of Time” had turned up as an afterthought on “More Hot Rocks” after appearing on the Stones album “Aftermath” a decade earlier. Plenty of people have covered it including Elvis Costello.

Maybe Charlie Watts didn’t like it, and now that he’s gone the Stones are playing it. Maybe there was no room for it but now that “Brown Sugar” has sadly been retired, “Out of Time” has a slot. Whatever the reason, when the Stones return to the States they’d better include it. It’s such a great song.

PS The whole Madrid show was streamed, and I see it’s all over YouTube. This band is amazing. They’re 100,000 years old and have more energy than teenagers!

Verdict! OVER 3.5 Million Watch as Jury Decrees Amber Heard Defamed Johnny Depp, Acted with Malice, Award Depp $15 Million, Heard $2 Mil

0

On YouTube, over 3.5 million people watched the jury return a verdict in the civil trial between Johnny Depp and ex wife Amber Heard.

Depp is not present. He’s in the UK playing rock gigs with Jeff Beck.

The jury says Depp has proven that Amber Heard defamed him. He’s won.

The jury came into the courtroom but evidently forgot to fill out the compensatory damages form. The judge sent them back to their room to finish their work.

The jury has completely vindicated Depp and ruled that Heard acted with “actual malice.”

It’s a stunning loss for Heard, and a victory for Depp. The jury awarded Depp $15 million regarding the Washington Post op ed Heard wrote. They also awarded him $2 million in the case of Heard’s claims about the Daily Mail.

Heard said in a long statement that she was “Disappointed” with the verdict. I’ll bet she is. The breakdown below shows what she now owes Depp. That will be negotiated over the next few weeks since it’s likely she doesn’t have that kind of money. What will be interesting to see is if Depp swaps out the money for a Non Disclosure gag order preventing Heard from writing a book or giving interviews.

BREAKDOWN OF MONEY:

$10 million to Depp in compensatory damages

$5 million to Depp in punitive damages* (capped by law at $350,000)

$2 million to Heard in compensatory damages

Johnny Depp-Amber Heard Verdict Will Be Read at 3PM: Watch Here

0

We’ve finally reached the end of the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard trial. The verdict will be read here at 3pm.

How will it go? Depp fans have conducted a massive campaign against Heard online. Will it matter to the jury? Endless stories about Depp “winning in the court of public opinion” may swing against him.

If Heard loses, she loses everything. Her career is finished. Depp’s career has been dented but if he wins, he could walk out of this mess. If he loses, he really loses.

Just to recap: after a miserable marriage, Heard wrote an op ed talking about being abused. Depp wasn’t named but he sued for her defamation and $50 million. She countersued for $100 million. In court they have burned each other to the ground.

The trial was an easy distraction from inflation, gas prices, the Ukraine, war, abortion, the Supreme Court, racism, COVID, school shootings, political infighting, and so on. It was easy to process, and to discuss at the dinner table without having a destructive fight.

So literally, stay tuned.

Hollywood Shuffle: Warner Bros. Gets MGM’s Leadership Team In Latest Revamp

0

Hollywood is a weird world. A long time ago Mike DeLuca was the rising star at New Line Cinema, part of Warner Bros. But some movies went sour, some other things weren’t positive, and DeLuca was out. Toby Emmerich replaced him.

Two decades later, Emmerich had moved up to run Warner Bros. from New Line as various execs came and went, were pushed out or overtaken. That’s the biz.

Now today, DeLuca returns to Warner’s as the new chief, replacing Emmerich, who will leave to produce very good movies, I’m sure. DeLuca comes from MGM with Pam Abdy. They had a slate of strong films at MGM like “Licorice Pizza” and “Respect” but they had a terrible marketing and PR effort that showed no respect. MGM was sold to Amazon, DeLuca and Abdy abdicated, but they’ve risen like phoenixes at WB.

Crazy, huh?

Toby did a very good job at Warner’s but the studio could not get their middle of the road movies, maybe awards worthy, to get any traction. One by one they failed. They were quality films, too. One of the headscratchers was “Just Mercy,” which I thought was going to be their prestige movie in 2019. But it just died on the vine. What can you do?

No matter who runs the studio, there will be emphasis on the DC Universe, with an effort to catch up to Marvel. Not clear if that’s possible. The recent “Suicide Squad” movie should have been a bigger hit. If I were DeLuca and Abdy I’d try to get Sue Kroll to come back. She’s a genius and could sell sand to the Arabs. She knows how to market a movie. (And please do not bring any MGM people to WB.)

Of course, it’s a different world now. When DeLuca was at New Line, there was no such thing as streaming. At MGM, there wasn’t either. (It was hopeless over there.) So the new chiefs have HBO and HBO Max at their disposal for synergy, and they will use it to good advantage.

And away we go!
