Supreme Court Overturns Abortion: Will Movie, Music, Theater Biz Shun Offending States?

The Supreme Court as expected has overturned Roe v. Wade. We knew it was coming, and it’s horrifying. Trump’s legacy is not only the criminal — with January 6th — but also to send the country back 50 years. It’s a frightening time.

Now possibly 25 states will enforce their “trigger” laws and ban abortion. Those states include Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.

The question now is, will movie productions still shoot in those states? Will music artists tour there? Will national tours of Broadway shows do business in those states?

It’s hard to imagine actors and musicians doing business in states that have banned abortion. Some of those states mentioned above don’t matter, anyway. But Tennessee includes Nashville and Memphis. Texas means Austin as well as Dallas and Houston. Louisiana is a prime state for filming because of tax breaks. So it will be instructive to see what the reaction is: will our artists allow their money to flow into such objectionable states?

Broadway: “The Minutes” Turned Into Seconds Last Night With Main Cast Out from COVID

0

Last night theater patrons got a surprise at the Roundabout Theater on 54th St.

Six of the main 11 actors at “The Minutes” by Tracey Letts were out of the show including Tracey Letts, Blair Brown, and Austin Pendleton were among those who had a separate piece of paper in the Playbill announcing their understudies would fill in for them.

“The Playbills were filled with paper,” said a patron.

No disrespect, but a lot of the audience came to see the principal players. There were some exits minutes before the lights went down. And some stayed to see a great play anyway.

COVID remains an issue all over Broadway, which is why masks should be required and vaccine cards should be checked. Other shows are suffering from this as well. Lets hope “The Minutes” don’t take hours to recover!

UPDATING: “Elvis” Thursday Previews Take in Impressive $3.5 Million Similar to “Bohemian Rhapsody”

0

There’s a lot more important things happening in the news this morning…

But… the numbers are in for “Elvis” previews last night…$3.5 million is a actually an impressive take in wide release…just $400,000 less than “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a music bio that eventually grossed over $700 million…

It’s entirely possible that the much hyped Baz Luhrmann movie will make around $20 million in its opening weekend. But word of mouth should be good, and there could be a nice upswing on Saturday. So we’ll cross our fingers…

By all means go see “Elvis” and enjoy tremendous performances from Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, one of our finest ever actors…

Taylor Swift Throws Her Hat in the 2023 Oscar Ring against Lady Gaga with “Carolina”

0

Taylor Swift has thrown her hat into the 2023 Oscar ring.

Her new single, “Carolina,” is from “Where the Crawdads Sing,” the adaptation of the best selling book. It won’t matter if the movie is a hit, just having Taylor on the charts will propel her into the Oscar ring next winter.

Taylor’s main competition so far for Best Song is Lady Gaga’s hit, “Hold My Hand,” from “Top Gun Maverick.” Of course, it’s a long way to the nominations.

Taylor’s already tried for a nomination with her song from “Cats.” But that didn’t work out because, well, because…

Adele Sets 10 Opening Acts for Hyde Park Dates, All Female, Including Kacey Musgraves

0

Adele has her opening acts for her Hyde Park dates.

There are 10 of them, all female, most you’ve never heard of. For Americans the biggest name is Kacey Musgraves.

The others are obscure or UK oriented. British singer Gabrielle, age 52, is listed on the same line as Musgraves above the other names. She has no following in the US but she’s obviously popular across the Pond.

Listen, for a female singer to open for Adele, they have to be good. And brave!

With all these performers, my guess is Adele’s set is 90 minutes, in and out, just the hits and some dirty jokes. We’ll see if any guest stars show up — Chris Stapleton? — or celeb friends in the audience.

Beyonce Chart Status In Peril as Taylor Swift, Charlie Puth and BTS Member Drop Singles Tonight

0

Beyonce’s reign at number 1 may be over tonight by 1am.

Both Taylor Swift and Charlie Puth are dropping new singles tonight. Puth’s is with a member of BTS, the first real test of that group’s individuals since they announced going on hiatus.

Swift’s single is called “Carolina,” it’s her Oscar eligible Best Song for 2023 from the movie of “Where the Crawdaddys Sing.”

Puth has also previewed his single with Jung Kook of BTS. It’s called “Left and Right,” and it already sounds like a hit.

Both of these new singles are original songs, unlike Beyonce’s, which is a cover.

Come back at midnight.

(Watch) Norah O’Donnell’s Scoop Interview with Filmmaker Alex Holder on Trump Jan 6 Documentary

0

Norah O’Donnell got a great scoop tonight on the CBS Evening News. She interviewed filmmaker Alex Holder about the time he spent in the Trump White House in the fall and winter of 2020. She also some more footage from the film, called “Unprecedented.”

I’m a big Norah O’Donnell fan, and not surprised that she and her team pulled this off. The Jan 6 Committee has postponed more hearings until they’ve reviewed the raw footage, and then they’ll call Holder as a witness. It’s brilliant stuff. This should be the end of Trump and his band of treasonous cronies.

Paul McCartney to Play Warm Up Show to Glastonbury for 800 People in UK Village

Paul McCartney is surprising a little English village tomorrow night.

He’s playing a warm up show in Frome, at a place called Cheese & Grain, for 800 people. It’s a warm up for his appearance at the Glastonbury Festival on Saturday.

Tickets are £25 each and limited to two per person.

McCartney was famous back in his early solo days with Wings for doing pop up shows in small UK villages. Wings went around in a van, arrived at pubs, and surprised the patrons.

We are very jealous we’re not in Frome, wherever that is. Let’s hope they film it. Indeed, fans will put it on YouTube.

A spokesperson for the venue, which welcomed Foo Fighters for a surprise gig before they headlined Glastonbury, said tickets were £25 each and limited to two per person who came to buy them.

“In 24 hours time from now Paul McCartney will be performing live, here in Frome, at the Cheese & Grain,” a spokesperson told the local paper in Bristol. “Tickets for this extraordinary experience are available now from our box office in person only and will be available on a strictly first come first served basis. The box office will be open for extended hours this evening until tickets have sold out.”

Flash! Exclusive Clip from Unseen Trump Documentary Headed to Jan 6 Committee Hearing

Filmmaker Alex Holder has released a 1 minute 15 second teaser from his movie “Unprecedented.” Holder is complying with a subpeona from the January 6th committee to turn over all his raw footage. The movie will come out this summer, although Holder hasn’t said yet who is releasing it. I am told that at first the plan was to stream it, but now a theatrical distribution is being talked about so the film can qualify for the Academy Award.

This clip is from December 5, 2020. Holder released with a statement about editorial control of the film. “The Trumps had no editorial control,” Holder said and his lawyer confirmed it.

Adele Drama: Two Big London Shows Coming, But In Vegas Her Cancellations Lead to Lay Offs, Headaches, and Anger

Believe it or not, Adele is getting ready to do two big shows in London.

They are set for July 1st and July 2nd in Hyde Park. They are all sold out, of course.

Will she make the dates? Or cancel the way she did in Las Vegas this past winter and spring. The f bomb dropping chanteuse scrapped 13 weeks in Vegas, a total of 26 shows, without much notice. Fans with tickets bought on secondary sites were left high and dry. They also had to deal with hotel and airline cancellations.

Now the Las Vegas Review Journal reports that Caesar’s Palace is about to lay off dozens of employees partly because of Adele’s sudden change of mind. Caesar’s has never announced replacement dates for the 26 shows. Their Colosseum– which just hosted a run of sold out shows from Sting — is reportedly moving on with new new bookings, but the loss of revenue from Adele has stung in a real world way.

Hitsdailydouble.com says Adele might be rebooking at Planet Hollywood in Vegas, which is managed by Caesar’s. But so far nothing has happened, no one’s heard a thing, and there is a lot of anger among Vegas crews and musicians over the cancelled dates.

Back to Hyde Park: the capacity for concerts is 65,000. If Adele cancels these shows, there will be 130,000 very angry fans. So all eyes will be on London next Friday and Saturday.

PS So far, all other scheduled shows at Hyde Park for the Eagles, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones feature five or six opening acts. So far, no one has been announced to open for Adele.
