Kathie Lee Gifford Debuts Her Broadway Musical “Scandalous”

0

Kathie Lee Gifford worked for 12 years on “Scandalous,” her Broadway musical about feminist evangelist pill popper and trailblazer Aimee Semple McPherson. Joy Philbin was telling me that during the intermission last night of the show’s premiere. “She called us over and said, I’ve been working on this musical. Then she played us a two hour CD of the songs.” Regis Philbin, sitting on the aisle, nodded in assent. Kathie Lee had just left their morning talk show to be with her kids and write “Scandalous.” “You can’t believe her dedication to it,” Regis said.

And so “Scandalous” has opened to mixed to good reviews,  a solid B. if were were to grade it But it’s very entertaining. Stars Carolee Carmello, George Hearn and Roz Ryan lead a cast that is wildly talented. The set at the Neil Simon Theater is unusually intimate. While the songs are not as memorable as they could be, the overall effect is energizing. And those leads are amazing. Carolee Carmello is not to be missed Semple McPherson. Roz Ryan, gives the show a B12 shot of soul. It’s a welcome jolt.

Kathie Lee inspires loyalty. Not only were Regis and Joy there, but her whole “Today” family turned up including Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Natalie Morales, and Al Roker. Hoda Kotb, Kathie Lee’s hilarious and sexy co-host, was not only at the show but accepting congrats for her pal. Hoda’s “date” for the night was Liza Minnelli, in great form. I asked her how she liked that Living Landmark dinner last week. “It went on sooo long,” she said. “I was tired.” But for this show, she said: “Hoda called and I said, alright, Let’s go!” She punched the air.

Frank Gifford was all smiles. “This show is finally out of my house!” he said. “I’ll miss it.” You remember back in the day Kathie Lee drove us crazy with stories on the air about her kids, Cody and Cassidy. You’d think they’d grow up to be crazy showbiz kids. Indeed. they are the loveliest kids, so well spoken, so interesting, attractive, bright. I am not kidding. Just like the Philbin girls. What a pleasure to talk to them, like adults. They even have jobs. These kids will not be sitting around eating bon bons.

Meanwhile, Joan Hamburg of WOR was in the audience, along with Jimmy Nederlander Sr. and Jr. (the latter with wife Margo), the great–I mean great- Broadway star Lillias White, as well as theater’s very funny Jackie Hoffman, and even Meredith Vieira. Yes, Meredith who is not on “Today” anymore, came to support Kathie Lee. How cool is that?

So people give Kathie Lee a lot of grief. But she hung in there for 12 years, had a vision, and put this show on Broadway. Aimee Semple McPherson does not get a glossed over portrait either. She’s a complex character. She even faked her own death once. Carmello nails it, and sings like her life depends on it. The result is she can’t speak between performances right now. It’s one or the other. But you’ve got to hear her and all of them, right away, at the Neil Simon.

PS Roz Ryan is appearing at the 54 Below Club on November 25th, on a night off. I’d make my reservations now if I were you!

Woody and Mia, 20 Years Later: The Sad Irony of Her Brother

2

Twenty years after Woody Allen and Mia Farrow notoriously broke up, there is a sad irony today. Mia’s brother John Farrow has been arrested and is being on $800,000 bail. Authorities in Arundel County, Maryland say two boys who are now adults have come forward to accuse Farrow for child sex abuse from 2000-2008. The police say there are more, and are actively looking for other victims. John Charles Villier-Farrow is a 66 year old yacht salesman.

The story brings a peculiar irony. In 2002, Mia accused Woody Allen, her former boyfriend, of molesting their adopted daughter. She demanded supervision for all of Woody’s visits with that child and with the biological child they shared. Eventually she turned all of her kids against Woody, and he hasn’t seen them in nearly two decades.

Of course, Allen was innocent. He had done nothing wrong. Farrow had needlessly put him through the ordeal of being investigated by a team of doctors from Yale New Haven Hospital. But Farrow marshaled her troops against Woody. including her brother John, who spoke out against Allen at the time. Farrow could not get over the hurt of Allen running off with her adopted of-age daughter, Soon Yi Previn. But Allen and Soon-Yi have remained together all this time, and have two adorable daughters.

Meantime, Mia–who was determined to destroy Woody–had an alleged pedophile right under her very nose. And of course Mia has had a peculiar history herself: she was 21 when she married Frank Sinatra, who was twice her age. And her most famous movie was “Rosemary’s Baby,” directed by Roman Polanski.

Graham Nash: Listening to Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” is “Quite Difficult for Me Personally”

6
One of my favorite people, Graham Nash, writes about the Beatles and Joni Mitchell in a new book called “101 Essential Rock Records/The Golden Age of Vinyl From the Beatles to the Sex Pistols.” Graham writes about Joni’s seminal album, “Blue,” that includes the songs “Carey” and “California.” A classic among Joni’s series of classics. I like it that their seduction happened in Ottawa at the Chateau Laurier. It looks like a romantic medieval castle.
Nash:
“I first met Joan in Ottawa, Canada in 1967.  The Hollies were playing a show there and Joni was playing at a local club. There was a party thrown for us after our show, and when I entered the room I noticed a beautiful woman sitting down with what appeared to be a large bible on her knees. I kept staring at her and our manager at the time, Robin Britten, was saying something into my ear and distracting me from my quest. I asked him to be quiet as I was checking Joni out.  He said “if you’d just listen to me I’m trying to tell you that she wants to meet you.”
David Crosby had told me earlier that year to look out for Joni should I ever get the chance to meet her.  Joni and I hit it off immediately, and I ended up in her room at the Chateau Laurier and she beguiled me with 15 or so of the most incredible songs I’d ever heard.  Obviously I fell in love right there and then.  She touched my heart and soul in a way that they had never been touched before.
It’s well known that Joni and I were boyfriend and girlfriend for a couple of years.  It was a ridiculously wonderful time for us both; people said that we ‘lit up a room’ when we entered. But good things sometimes come to an end, and our relationship did.
Listening to “Blue” is quite difficult for me personally.  It brings back many memories and saddens me greatly.  It is, by far, my most favorite solo album, and the thought that I spent much time with this fine woman and genius of a writer is incredible to me.  I watched her write some of those songs and I believe that one or two of them were about me, but who really knows?
Blue will be, and really deserves to be, her best work… so stark, so deep… so Blue…”

Liz Lemon Is Getting Married on “30 Rock” (Here’s the Invite)

0

Liz Lemon is getting married on the last day of November sweeps. It’s also the day Katie Holmes opens on Broadway in “Dead Accounts.” The fictional “30 Rock” character is marrying Chris Chross, her boyfriend played by James Marsden.
“She’s 42. No big whoop. Bring your own snacks.” Liz has had a lot of bad boyfriends, starting with Floyd (Jason Sudeikis), and others played Jon Hamm and Matt Damon. In the end Liz–played by Tina Fey– gets an X Man. “What the What?!” the invite reads. Maybe she’ll get pregnant right away and have the baby before “30 Rock” ends its run in May.

Idiotic People’s Choice Awards For Low IQ Comic Book Fans

0

The laughable idiotic People’s Choice Awards have announced their nominees. They are geared for a low IQ comic book crowd, not even a high IQ comic book crowd. It’s the low brow awards of the year, so ridiculous as to almost be a kitsch cult thing. If any of these things is anyone’s favorite thing, then enjoy! When “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” is nominated for something you know we’re in trouble. And favorite dramatic movie– “The Vow”! LOL. Or how about Will Smith, Favorite Actor, star of no movies this year. How hilarious! “Favorite Face of Heroism!” Jeez, Louise!

Oscar Best Actor Nominees: Clash of the Titans Shaping Up

1

The Academy Awards: Best Actor is turning into a Clash of the Titans that may wipe out the second tier great actors we’ve gotten used to seeing in recent years. Right now, the line up includes Daniel Day Lewis for “Lincoln,” Denzel Washington for “Flight,” Bradley Cooper for “Silver Linings Playbook,” and Anthony Hopkins for “Hitchcock.”All except Cooper have Oscars already.

That would leave only slot open. And who would it be? The possibilities start with Ben Affleck, whom we’ve seen in “Argo.” But looming out there is the chance that Hugh Jackman is sensational in “Les Miserables.” Whoops! That would knock out John Hawkes, who’s so good in “The Sessions.” And it would leave a question mark for Joaquin Phoenix,  top notch in “The Master.”

In past years, Phoenix and Hawkes would have been certain nominees from the get-go. But 2012 has turned out to be a bumper crop year for movies.

It’s the same problem in Best Supporting Actor, where Robert DeNiro will be up for “Silver Linings” in a lovely, unexpected performance. Philip Seymour Hoffman remains a knockout in “The Master.” Tommy Lee Jones is strong for “Lincoln.” Alan Arkin is a favorite already from “Argo.”  All are prior Oscar winners. And then there are the unknowns: Russell Crowe could be up for “Les Miz.”  Leonardo DiCaprio will be on the hunt for a nod from “Django Unchained.”

That leaves little wiggle room for newcomers, like the tiger from “Life of Pi.” I’m hearing that after the success last year of Uggie the faithful pooch from “The Artist.” the tiger already has a publicist and a campaign!

Harvey Weinstein Producing All Star Concert Planned for 12-12-12 for Hurricane Sandy

35

Just as he did with the Concert for New York right after September 11th, 2001, Harvey Weinstein is putting on an all star concert for Hurricane Sandy relief. Set for December 12, 2012, “12-12-12″ will feature Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, the Who, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Bon Jovi, and tons more top rank artists. Weinstein is producing the show with John Sykes and with Jim Dolan of Cablevision. Proceeds will go to the Robin Hood Foundation.

The show will likely feature some kind of participation from the Rolling Stones, although they are not part of today’s announcement. But this ’12-12’12” comes the right in the middle of the Stones’  New York area shows on December 8 and 13th. And so far, the Stones have not announced any kind of charitable donation even though their ticket prices alone could raise enough money to support all the people who’ve been displaced and then some. They will be a natural addition.

Don’t be surprised to hear also Paul Simon thrown into the mix. Maybe they can pipe in Sting, too. He’s playing a stadium show in Bangkok, Thailand that night.

Back in 2001, Weinstein and Sykes put together a similar show, The Concert for New York at Madison Square Garden. Many of the same artists were involved then, in a spectacular evening that kicked off with David Bowie.

In a press release: “Event producers, James Dolan, John Sykes and Harvey Weinstein issued the following joint statement: “‘12-12-12’ is shaping up to be a showcase of music royalty. The response from the entertainment community to help those most affected by Hurricane Sandy has been nothing short of astounding. We expect to announce additional legendary performers in the near future and we are confident that the event will ensure those in need will not be forgotten, and vital aid will be directed to rebuilding our communities along the East Coast.”

PS Hopefully, this show will be sold in a way that scalpers like StubHub won’t be able to buy blocks of seats that are resold for thousands of dollars. This group of presenters is too smart to let that happen.

“Lincoln” All Star NYC Screening Brings Spielberg, Stars

1

Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” finally got a New York City screening at the Ziegfeld and the stars came out for it. It wasn’t a premiere– I think that was in L.A. And we’d already seen an early version of “Lincoln” at the New York Film Festival. It’s been slightly changed but not much since then. On second viewing, though, “Lincoln” is better than ever– a sweeping epic, an intimate portrait, with a lot of humor and many dazzling moments. There are three to-be-nominated Oscar performances in Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field, and Tommy Lee Jones. Directing, adapted screenplay, cinematography, makeup, and costumes are all going to be acknowledged.

“Lincoln” is a great film in a great year. Really: we have “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Flight,” and “Argo” all now, “Les Miserables,” “Django Unchained,” and “Zero Dark Thirty” coming, and these are just awards movies. Hollywood has knocked itself out this Christmas.

At the “Lincoln” screening: besides the peeps associated with the film were Anne Hathaway with new husband Adam Schulman, Tony Bennett, Amy Ryan, Judd Hirsch, Tony Danza, Lorraine Bracco with daughter Stella, Matthew Settle, “Precious” screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher who just sold his new movie, “Violet and Daisy,” to Cinedigm; record mogul Clive Davis, Heather Matarazzo, Saul Rubinek, DA Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus, “Silver Linings” producer Bruce Cohen, and our pal Tovah Feldshuh with husband Andy Levy.

Spielberg spoke to the crowd, which consisted of several guilds including SAG. The “LIncoln” ensemble had just come from doing screenings and Q&A’s for the Directors Guild and the National Board of Review, and a few other things, too. They looked exhausted. But Sally Field was chipper (I have a separate interview with her). Daniel Day Lewis was happy to see wife Rebecca Miller (publishing her second novel in March ’13) and her aunt, the famed Joan Copeland. Tommy Lee Jones, Gloria Reuben, Michael Stuhlbarg, James Spader were all there as were several of the wonderful supporting players like Peter Raymond, Stephen Henderson, Peter McRobbie and so on. Doris Kearns Goodwin, the renowned author of “Team of Rivals,” the book upon which Tony Kushner based “Lincoln,”  was also in the mix.

Also there for some reason I couldn’t figure out: tabloid pin up Kellan Lutz, whose name I have never typed before. For some reason, he wanted his picture taken with the “Lincoln” cast. Good for him!

“Lincoln” is in limited release right now, but expands soon. The version we saw last night was a little trimmer than the original, but it’s still a massive instant classic. DDL, going for his third Oscar, simply inhabits Lincoln to the point where you forget it’s an actor. He gives, as usual, a breathtaking performance. Field and Jones are spectacular. Sally Field is likely to win her third Oscar as Mary Todd Lincoln. And then there so many wonderful second tier supporting roles–David Straithairn, Hal Holbrook, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Joseph Cross.

Buried in the credits of this huge cast– and I didn’t actually see them– are Oscar winner Kevin Kline and Jean Kennedy Smith, last surviving sibling of the original Kennedy clan.

PS Anne Hathaway had to excuse herself toward the end of the film, then ran back and stood in the back of the theater to watch the ending. The star of “Les Miserables” told me: “It’s amazing. I want to see it again.”

Paul McCartney: No Retirement– Animated Feature at HBO in the Works, New Album

0

Exclusive: Paul McCartney has made a deal with HBO for animated feature for kids. I’m told that the HBO team is working just with McCartney’s solo songs, like “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and “Silly Love Songs,” working up proposals to stitch the whole thing together. At the same time, McCartney is still working with Bob Shaye and Michael Lynn of Unique Films–the guys who made New Line Cinema a stunning success for over 25 years.

I told you some months ago that they were all putting together an adult animated feature. But that one has all new music. This one for HBO is an attempt to use McCartney’s vast solo catalog, which is a great idea. There are tons of great songs like “Another Day” and “Uncle Albert” that would be perfect for such treatment.

Meantime, I am told that Paul has lots of tracks with many different producers like Mark Ronson and Paul Epworth– who made Adele’s big hit “21” album- that he’s fiddling with for a new album. “There are many producers involved,” says my source. McCartney currently has a new live album and DVD out from his “Kisses on the Bottom” project from last spring, called “Live Kisses.”

My source also laughed at recent reports that Paul might retire. “Never,” he said. “He’ll just take more vacations.” McCartney loves to perform live and makes millions from it. He’s got four dates in Canada next week, all sold out.

TVLand Renews “The Soul Man” Which Does NOT Feature the Actual Soul Man

3

TV Land has renewed the mostly awful series called The Soul Man. The series does not star the actual person who is called the Soul Man, R&B legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sam Moore. Cedric the Entertainer is the star, and he’s starting to brand himself “The Soul Man,” which is a no no. Sam Moore has been “the Soul Man” since 1966 when his hit with Dave Prater established them as the most famous R&B duo of all time.

Since Prater’s death, Sam has been immortalized in countless movies, by all the living presidents, at the Kennedy Center several times, at international awards shows like MOJO, by the Grammys. and by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and by Bruce Springsteen.

Last weekend, Moore was a guest at Reggie Jackson’s charity event in Las Vegas where Cedric was hired to entertain the crowd. Cedric, I am told, made very sure to stay away from Moore out of sheer embarrassment. Nevertheless, Robin Leach featured Moore in his column about the event. Singer Jeffrey Osbourne, also there to entertain the audience, flipped out when he saw Sam. Osbourne’s original band, LTD, once worked as Sam’s back up band, and Osbourne remains a devoted fan.

And no, Sam is not calling himself “Sam Moore the Entertainer” to get back at Cedric. He’s too classy for that.
