Pop Charts: Adele Fighting for Number 1 (in a Very Slow Week) with Metalcore Punks and Christian Music

0

The clock is ticking tonight for the weekly pop chart. The cut off is in a few hours.

Adele is fighting to be at number 1 again. But she has competition from two extreme areas–metalcore punk and Christian pop.

Right now, Bethel church’s “Have it All” is at number 1 with 21,972 copies. Hard rock metal punk group Killswitch Engage is at number 2 with 21,790. Adele is third, her “25” album so far has sold 21,297.

Keep refreshing to see who wins.

The chart is very light this week, with little selling of any consequence. According to hitsdailydouble, with 89% of all accounts in, the number 50 album by Tim McGraw has sold 2,306 copies. I mean, are you kidding? How can the business stay in business?

Friday’s big release is a Gwen Stefani solo album called “My Husband Cheated, My Marriage Broke Up, I Started Dating Another Judge on The Voice, will all That Publicity Pay Off?” Only if the songs are good.

Lions Gate Braces for “Allegiant” Disaster as Final Film Scores a Scary Low 11, Described as “Flaccid”

0

It’s all over but for the fighting.

When “Divergent: Allegiant” opens tomorrow, Lions Gate execs will pour some drinks and brace themselves. The weekend box office is not going to be pretty.

“Allegiant” is described today by the New York Times as “flaccid.” Its Rotten Tomatoes score is a lowly 16— make that a very very low 11. Eleven.

And while “Allegiant” should have a decent Friday, that will probably be its big night. On Twitter, a search for #Allegiant turns up mostly plugs from its own account. There doesn’t seem to be much fan action, actually none.

Lions Gate stock, meanwhile, is dropping again this morning. Not a pretty picture.

Nancy Sinatra Mourns Her Brother, Frank Jr, Dead from a Heart Attack

0

The Sinatra family mourn the untimely passing of their son, brother, father, uncle, Frank Sinatra, Jr. of cardiac arrest while on tour in Daytona, Florida.

January 10, 1944 – March 16, 2016

Sleep warm, Frankie…

Nancy Sinatra posted this picture and statement on Facebook for her brother, who died yesterday while on tour. He was 72. Frank Jr. never had a chance. Always in the shadow of his father, he was once kidnapped. His paid ransom was $240,000. How ironic that he has died during what was his father’s centennial celebration. He’s outlived by his mother, Nancy Sinatra Sr., who will turn 99 in September if this news doesn’t kill her. RIP, Frank.

“Indiana Jones” Announcement Omitted George Lucas or Writer on 5th Film

0

Big news this week about a fifth “Indiana Jones” movie.

But the press release from Disney omitted two big elements– the name of George Lucas, and a writer for the film.

Lucas created the “Indiana Jones” characters with Steven Spielberg and has worked on all of their stories. When the “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”– part 4– was being developed, Lucas was rignt in there.

Unfortunately, some fans blamed Lucas for adding “Star Wars” type elements into that story. But you know, Spielberg didn’t do it with a gun to his head.

Now, no one has any idea who’s writing Number 5. Lucas may indeed not be involved at all because “Indiana Jones” has moved from Paramount to Disney. George sold LucasFilm to Disney and walked away from everything– maybe even “Indiana Jones.”

Last year Lucas said in a bunch of interviews that he’d given Spielberg the story idea but was still tweaking it. Maybe Lucas will get a ‘story by’ credit with no other involvement. The answers are as yet unknown.

But this doesn’t signal a break between the two most successful directors of all time. They are still best friends.

Katherine Heigl Is Doing a Cat Food Commercial- Yes, You Read That Right

0

Katherine Heigl is doing a cat food commercial. She’s the new spokesperson for Cat’s Pride Fresh and Light. From “Greys Anatomy” to movie star to this. Well, I don’t know. I always liked her. But something has gone haywire. Cat’s Pride told the Chicago Business Journal that a “portion of every Cat’s Pride Fresh and Light Ultimate Care purchase” will go to a foundation set up in the memory of Katherine’s brother. Hmmm… There’s nothing on the commercial that indicates that– thought I’m sure it’s true. Nevertheless, Heigl should be a star of her own series. She’s a good actress. I hope she gets back on track.

Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” May Be Sunk with Amazon’s Choice of Distributor

0

Poor Kenny Lonergan. His “Margaret” wound up in a long never ending soap opera, a war between Fox Searchlight and him over final cut, distribution and promotion. The writer director of “You Can Count on Me” had a terrible time and it all ended badly.

Now Amazon, which bought his “Manchester by the Sea,” may have sealed his doom again. They’ve made a deal with Roadside Attractions, or what I call Roadkill for the all the movies they’ve dumped or ruined.

This year they’ve released Spike Lee’s “ChiRaq,” which made about $2.5 million. Of course, that meager amount is a fortune compared to Katie Holmes in “Touched by Fire,” which took in $146,000 in theaters. Roadside is the same company that managed to kill Robert Redford’s Oscar chances in “All Is Lost,” JC Chandor’s mini masterpiece.

Roadside also picked up Whit Stillman’s new movie through Amazon, and god knows what they’ll do with that. Of course, the real fear is that they will get their hands on Woody Allen’s new movie. Cue REM singing “It’s the End of the of the World.”

Right now Roadside is sitting with Sally Field in “Hello My Name is Doris.” They did a cheapo stealth premiere in New York, a few days of press (thanks to Field’s superstar press rep Heidi Schaefer at PMK-BNC) and left the movie to work on its own. So far they’ve made $84,000. Sally Field, who won two Oscars, and has rave reviews for this film– let’s see what the future holds when “Doris” expands.

Lonergan deserves better. So did Redford. At least these new releases can count on being on Amazon Prime right away.

Exclusive: “Law & Order SVU” Taking on “The Bachelor/Bachelorette” in Sweeps Episode

0

The old rubric for “Law & Order” was always “ripped from headlines.” The current 17th season of “Law & Order SVU” is no exception. In May the resurgent show will take on “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette.”

A casting call has gone out for a raft of characters participating in a reality show called “Heart’s Desire.” it seems like it may be a combo of both “The Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” with “SVU” looking for a variety of dim but attractive male and female players.

“Heart’s Desire” is run by a married couple called Jeffrey and Regina Prince, who sound more like a parody of Robert and Michelle King, who govern “The Good Wife.” Their names may be an inside joke among New York TV folk.

Jeffrey Prince is described as “smooth – talking, manipulative, not always above board, thrives on conflict, talks out of both sides of his mouth and likes to let people know how smart and in charge he is, unashamedly opportunistic, little regard for others emotions as long as he gets drama and ratings, demanding on his crew and contestants with little sympathy for their feelings or lives.” Regina is “career focused, ambitious,
thick skinned, will say what she needs to get what she wants, ½ of a power couple with her husband Jeffrey
Prince, demanding, calculating, scheming, always looking to push buttons and get good footage, image
conscious, she always puts a good spin on things publicly, but doesn’t mince words behind closed doors.”

One possible twist is that the mother of the main Bachelor, named Ryan, is also a lawyer. He may need one.

“Law & Order SVU” has been a huge hit in the ratings this season, often the highest rated drama of its night. Showrunner Warren Leight is leaving after five seasons of yeoman duty, and breathing new life into an old story. “SVU” is already renewed for the fall.

Keanu Reeves Movie “Exposed” Bombs (Understatement) Makes $122 in UK, $Zero in US

0

Buried in the Lions Gate fiasco of movies bombing all over the place: a January release called “Exposed” starring Keanu Reeves.

In the US, “Exposed” took in no money upon its release. Nada. There’s never been a report for it.

In Great Britain, the number is considerably worse: $122. That’s one hundred twenty two dollars. And no sense. The worldwide total: $140,483.

“Exposed” scored a 6 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lions Gate must be praying for “Allegiant,” which had a stealth premiere on Monday night. So far it has an 18 on Rotten Tomatoes. 27 bad reviews, 6 positive.

Nora Ephron HBO Movie: Not A Dry Eye in the House At Swanky MoMA Party

0

There really wasn’t a dry eye in the house last night at the Museum of Modern Art as Nora Ephron’s son, Jacob Bernstein, unspooled his memorial documentary, “Everything is Copy.” When Ephron died in 2012 at age 71 from pneumonia and leukemia it was a shock to just about everyone who knew her, from family to her wide circle of close friends. She kept her illness a total secret. Why? The grande dame of gossip and old friend Liz Smith says in the film, with a hearty laugh: “She was a control freak.”

Ephron was also hilariously funny, a gifted writer and essayist, screenwriter and filmmaker. In the house last night: everyone from Meg Ryan (who starred in three Ephron films), to Griffin Dunne (his cousin Annabelle coproduced the film with Vanity Fair’s editor in chief Graydon Carter) to Ephron’s husband, writer Nick Pileggi and famously ex husband Carl Bernstein plus Christine Baranski, Alan Cumming, Carol Kane, Tovah Feldshuh, Mort Zuckerman, Hearst’s Ellen Levine, Gayle King and police commish Bill Bratton with journalist wife Rikki Klieman.

In the film, and outspoken: Meryl Streep (star of Nora’s seminal Mike Nichols film “Heartburn” and “Julie and Julia”), Tom Hanks, Rob Reiner, and Nora’s sisters Delia, Amy, and Hallie.

Carl Bernstein, one half of the “All the President’s Men” team with Bob Woodward, finally is interviewed– by son Jacob, no less– about his famous philandering, his relationship with Nora and their hugely acrimonious divorce that resulted in the hilarious book and movie “Heartburn.” (If you’ve never read this novel, you must immediately.)

“Heartburn” was Ephron’s revenge on Bernstein and anyone who questioned her writing skills. It was an enormous hit, and changed her life. Jacob Bernstein noted that his father, a “player” in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, is now happily remarried. “I’m sure he never thought I’d be digging around in his divorce records.”

But indeed it was part of the Ephron-Bernstein divorce decree that Bernstein only be portrayed as a “conscientious and loving father.” On screen, Carl says to Jacob he did that because he was worried about how Jacob and brother Max would view him in the future. In a revelatory moment, Jacob admits it did affect him negatively, which surprises Carl.

Most of “Everything is Copy” is very funny, particularly the archival clips of Nora on Dick Cavett’s nighttime talk show in the 70s, and use of her audiobook readings. There are a couple of sad, alarming moments– the interviews with Mike Nichols were done right before he died, and he looks frighteningly ill. Also, in Nora’s last interview on “Charlie Rose” she is clearly sick, even though he doesn’t question it and apparently no one did. Something was terribly wrong.

But Ephron left clues– as I wrote when she died– that everyone ignored. They were all over her last book. The last part of the film deals with her friends’ surprise about her death. A theme echoed in the movie is that everyone wanted her to like them. Famed journalist Gay Talese gets a good laugh when he says, “I thought I was a close friend”– close enough to be told she was dying– “but instead it’s that f—-ing Richard Cohen” (a friend who was told).

Ah well. Ephron’s mother, Phoebe, a famed screenwriter with her husband Henry (Desk Set, Carousel) told her daughters: “Everything is copy.” As Streep says, “Nothing is private.” Her grandson Jacob has followed that advice. His movie is must-see. The movie premieres on HBO March 21st.

P.S. One of Nora’s best movies, “You’ve Got Mail,” was based on a film called “The Shop Around the Corner,” which was turned into a musical called “She Loves Me.” That show is now being revived on Broadway, and opens Thursday night by coincidence. The revival is quite charming and should be a big hit. You can see the parts of “You’ve Got Mail” that came from it. Nora, as her friends say in the film, had very good taste!

Michael Jackson Debt-Free At Last: Sony Music Buying His Part of Beatles Catalog, Publishing Company for $750 Mil

0

The long saga of Michael Jackson, Sony Music Publishing and the Beatles is coming to an end. Sony/ATV is buying Michael’s estate out of his half the company for $750 million. On March 31st, the Estate will receive a lump sum of $733 million.

Michael Jackson, dead since June 2009, in debt since the 90s, is finally debt free. The shadow that hung over him is finally gone. And he’s not here to see it. What a shame.

The music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney is now fully owned by Sony Music Publishing.

The Jackson estate can now presumably pay off its massive debt and whatever loans remained. When Michael died, he was leveraged to the hilt and owed around $320 million. There were on and off liens against Neverland Ranch and Michael’s family home. The ranch was eventually lost, and is now for sale. In desperation, Michael agreed to 50 or more concerts in London. You know the rest.

Of course, Michael could have sold out years ago and avoided a lot of angst and maybe even his own death. But the Beatles catalog became like the ring in Lord of the Rings or Wagner’s music cycle. No one would part with it voluntarily.

The money will go into the Jackson estate and eventually to Michael’s three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket.

But first, as per Sony’s statement: “The payment also reflects certain contractual and accounting adjustments related to the Sony/ATV joint venture and other commercial opportunities involving Sony and the Estate.”
