Morgan Wallen’s Fans Counter “SNL” Walk Off Criticism, Push 4 of His Singles into iTunes Top 5

0

Morgan Wallen’s fans have fought back.

After the country yokel walked off “Saturday Night Live ” during the show’s closing segment this week, he was heaped with criticism.

Wallen became the first musical guest to exit the show while the credits were rolling. He stepped down off the stage and walked right out.

Usually all the guests stay on stage and chat while the ending music plays.

Wallen next showed up on Instagram with a picture of his plane taking off. He wrote: “Get me to god’s country.”

Since then he posted a new video showing him shooting at a target range, with the song, “Redneck,” playing underneath it

According to several reports, Wallen didn’t care for being on the show and didn’t fraternize with the cast. He declined at the last minute to appear in a filmed skit, too.

But the criticism everywhere has been harsh. The result is Wallen’s fans fighting back, downloading his two new songs, and two recent hits. All four are now in the iTunes top 5.

Ironically, before the criticism began the sales response from Wallen’s appearance wasn’t very strong.

But the walk off ginned up enthusiasm for the two songs he performed. It’s a little strange since the songs — “Just in Case” and “I’m the Problem” — weren’t very good.

Why Wallen was even on “SNL” is a mystery. He was previously canceled by the show during COVID for violating the masking rules at an event prior to what was supposed to his appearance.

The “SNL” audience has never been for country music, either. Now Wallen has only benefited from the appearance. Did it help “SNL” ratings? That remains to be seen.

Broadway’s Star Studded “Glengarry” with Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk Brings Big Stars to Rainy Opening Night

0

A real drenching night didn’t dampen the spirits for the glittery opening last on Broadway of the “Glengarry Glen Ross” revival.

The knockout play stars newly minted Oscar and Emmy winner Kieran Culkin, Emmy winner Bob Odenkirk together with comedian Bill Burr, the exceptionally talented Michael McKean, and sensational Donald Webber Jr — who will all be competing for Tony Awards as Best Supporting Actor.

Patrick Marber directs the timeless David Mamet dramedy, one of the few plays in the history that begs for a third act because it is was too short ad so very funny and sad at the same time.

“Glengarry” — set in a Chicago real estate office in 1969 — is a Damon Runyon-esque tale of brokers desperate for “leads” selling gated communities, and a stupid burglary that goes wrong very quickly.

Considering these talented guys are making their Broadway debuts, the play — arriving in the massive and beautifully renovated Palace Theater — is kind of a surprise gem of the season.

Their combined drawing power brought out a crowd in which you couldn’t throw a stone without hitting a star.

“Succession” players Sarah Snook (who has her own massive hit on Broadway), J Smith-Cameron, and David Rasche all turned out to support Culkin. The line to get through the VIP entrance last night backed up forever with Lorne Michaels, Tony Goldwyn, Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne, Cynthia Nixon, Anthony Edwards, former Senator Al Franken, Katie Holmes, Liev Schreiber, Evan Jongkeit and Zosia Mamet, Ansel Elgort sporting long locks, Eric McCormack, Darren Criss, Patrick Wilson, David Krumholtz, Richard Schiff, Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham, Jason Biggs, Michael Feinstein, McKean’s actress wife Annette O’Toole, and on and on.

Let me tell you, the heartiest laugh heard in the audience was from Cynthia Nixon, who roared with delight at very line. She wasn’t alone. “Glengarry” was the anti-woke enjoyment everyone in the theater needed, as the now classic characters eviscerate not only each other but language itself in Mamet’s masterclass.

From what I’m told, this first time cast of big personalities struggled to cohere in early previews. Even Odenkirk — who steals the show a little bit as ShelleyLevene — conceded it when I spoke to him last night. Among the cast, McKean — who co-starred with Odenkirk in “Better Call Saul”  — showed off unforeseen chops as George, the bumbling veteran salesman. Culkin’s self assured Ricky Roma is proof of the actor’s victory lap year. But the opening performance, fueled by adrenaline, kicked in and lightning struck. Every actor was “on,” to the delight of the crowd. A strong wind has now caught their sails, the GGGR ensemble looks headed for big things.

Sony Confirms April 2028 for Four Beatles Films Told from Each of the Group’s Members Perspectives — With Hot Stars Attached

0

The Beatles will get four simultaneous films three years from now, from Sony Pictures. They were announced at CinemaCon 2025.

The four films are each directed by award winner Sam Mendes, and be billed as “The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.”

I suppose that’s the title, with John, Paul, George, and Ringo as the subtitles.

The lads will be played by four of the hottest young actors working today: Harris Dickinson (John Lennon), Paul Mescal (Paul McCartney), Barry Keoghan (Ringo Starr) and Joseph Quinn (George Harrison).

Listed producers are Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Julie Pastor, and Alexandra Derbyshire — but no one from the Beatles “family” or the heads of Apple Records.

Final credits are not divulged, but Sony confirmed the release on Monday night.

The films will have total freedom to use all the Beatles songs. There’s no doubt that Apple Records will deploy a set of collectible soundtracks with the best sound technology.

The tie-ins should be insane, starting with Sirius XM’s Beatles channel and extending to all kinds of marketing.

Who will write each film? Will they overlap? What material is all based on? Again, no details were given. But the making of four simultaneous films is a mind boggling project. Mendes is a master, so he can surely pull this off. But the cost will be staggering.

Casting should include the roles of Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager, all the wives and girlfriends, plus Allen Klein, the man who successfully turned everyone against each other.

Sony also announced two new Spider Man movies, their bread and butter. “Spider Man: Brand New Day,” and “Spider Man: Beyond the Spider Verse” animated, are the titles. The former film, I’m told, will have a lot of the recent “Spider Man” cast, although the characters may not remember each other.

They will, however, remember the Beatles songs!

What’s Up, Doc? Warner Bros. Canceled $70 Million Hybrid Film “Coyote vs. Acme” Gets a Distribution Deal

0

Warner Bros. didn’t want “Coyote vs, Acme.”

But Ketchup Entertainment does. They’re going to distribute the live action saga of Wiley Coyote.

The film features a stellar cast, including Will Forte, John Cena, Lana Condor and Tone Bell. The film centers on Wile E. Coyote as he takes legal action against the Acme Corporation for the countless faulty products that have hindered his relentless pursuit of the Road Runner.

“Coyote vs. Acme” is produced by Chris deFaria and James Gunn with a screenplay by Samy Burch. Dave Green directed it.

The film cost at least $70 million, and has long been the fascination of fans. Is it any good? My Warner’s insiders told me this winter that it wasn’t, which is why they held it back.

Ketchup, a small distributor, certainly didn’t pay $70 million. But they’re already in the business of releasing classic Warner cartoons. They’ve taken in $8 million in theaters with “The Day The Earth Blew Up,” a Looney Tunes classic. On home video, they”re sure to do well especially among families. “Coyote vs. Acme” fits right in.

Gareth West, CEO of Ketchup Entertainment, said: “We’re thrilled to have made a deal with Warner Bros. Pictures to bring this film to audiences worldwide. COYOTE VS. ACME is a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern storytelling, capturing the essence of the beloved Looney Tunes characters while introducing them to a new generation. We believe it will resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.”

Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice” Series, Added to Amazon Prime With Big Announcement: No One’s Watching

0

Maybe real life under Donald Trump’s presidency is too real to watch a game show.

One game show in particular is not doing well on streaming.

Donald Trump’s TV series, “The Apprentice,” is so far not attracting a crowd on Amazon Prime.

Three weeks ago, Amazon Prime announced it was putting all seven seasons of “The Apprentice,” which aired on NBC, onto their streaming platform. They said it like it was a big deal.

But so far “The Apprentice” has not turned up in Amazon Prime’s top 10 streaming shows.

To be clear: Amazon, which owns MGM studios, already owned “The Apprentice.” It came to them when producer Mark Burnett sold his company to MGM. Burnett owned the rights. So no money was transacted that we know of. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos already announced he was paying Trump the ludicrous amount of $40 million for a documentary about AWOL wife, Melania.

“The Apprentice” can be streamed or purchased on DVDs. There’s been little interest in it in either format.

On DVD. “The Apprentice” 5 DVD set for season is ranked at number 80,182. It’s 113 of all reality and game shows.

Reviews aren’t so good. “The Apprentice” has 681 of them, with an average rating of 2.3.

As for streaming, companies like Amazon don’t give numbers. But it’s not in the top 10. One reviewer wrote: “Well, where do I even begin? This latest episode of The Apprentice was like watching paint dry while being forced to listen to Trump lecture you about “business genius” for three hours straight. I honestly thought I was stuck in some kind of corporate fever dream.”

To be fair, there are some positive reviews. But of the 681, 67% gave it 1 star.

Is there anyone dying to see the episodes of “The Apprentice”? Doesn’t seem like it.

In other news, the stock market has dropped 1,000 points in the last two business days. It’s down more than 3,000 points since Trump’s Inauguration.

Review: “The White Lotus” Penultimate Episode: Nothing Much Happened But Slow Build Up to Finale

0

Not much happened tonight on the penultimate episode of “The White Lotus.”

There was no pay off of last week’s big incest story. The Ratliff brothers didn’t even share a scene.

There was so nervousness about sister and brother this time, with Piper and Lochlan getting uncomfortable. But thank God that was a bust, and Piper retreated to her room. (You could hear the audience echoing Parker Posey’s “Piper, no!”)

The big story was all about Walton Goggins’ Rick and pal Frank, played by Sam Rockwell, going on their murder mission. Rick brought a gun to meet Jim, the man his mother once told him killed his father. Jim is played by the great Scott Glenn, who bears a physical resemblance to Goggins. If Jim doesn’t turn out to be Rick’s father, who left the mother, I’d be surprised.

The best scenes were between Rockwell and Patravadi Mejudhon, the elegant Thai star who plays Hollinger’s wife, Sritala, a famed actress and owner of the hotel. Mejudhon lights up every scene. When she’s with Frank, she’s kittenish and easily impressed. Rockwell is magic once again, fawning all over her, freelancing to keep her busy. When he falls off the wagon, the results seem less dangerous than hilariously weird. Maybe next week he’ll be dressed up as an Asian woman.

Jason Isaacs’ Timothy is the most underwritten character. Knowing he’s going to jail and losing everything, all he does is walk around stoned and fantasize suicide – or murder of his wife or son. He mumbles from taking drugs and drinking. No one notices. Why wasn’t he written as pro-active or smart about his situation?

The most sinister part of the show was Belinda finally speaking to Greg/Gary. He offers her $100,000 not to rat him out to the US authorities. She says she has to think about it. He gives her the evil eye, setting up a red herring for the White Lotus about who gets killed in the final episode. Will Greg murder her? I don’t think so, but you never know.

If violence is coming, the participants are in two groups. One is the guard, Gaitok, who spots the hotel robbers at the fight. His girlfriend prods him to be more courageous, so maybe — since has one of the guns floating around — he’ll do something about it.

Or: One of the robbers, who’s now bedded Lauri (Carrie Coon) has a mean Russian girlfriend. She could come after Laurie. Or Jim’s goons might come after Rick, since he didn’t kill Jim but knocked him off his chair.

Regardless, at this point I’m not sure it matters. There’s no overarching theme to the season. So many of the beats and plotlines are retreads from the first two seasons. Piper and Lochlan wanting to stay in Thailand is the same as the kid in season 1 who remained in Hawaii. The hotel manager nervously sang tonight, same as the hooker in season 2.

In tonight’s episode the sensation Aimee Lou Wood, as Chelsea, had almost the same conversation she had last week with Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) about him being soulless, and so on. Wood is a gem, it’s too bad she hasn’t had more to do than act shocked about Saxon. Let’s hope she’s not collateral damage.

Nothing great for Parker Posey tonight. Victoria has gained no insight into anything going on around her. Her own character was not advanced this week. She hasn’t even questioned what happened to her missing Lorazepam, or wondered if her husband’s total fog could have been caused by the pills. If she’s seen clues that her husband is a criminal or that her sons have had an unacceptable encounter, it has not been shown to the audience.

But there’s a lot of beautiful cinematography.

Next week will come what I feel will be the unsatisfying end of this soap opera. I don’t think of the main cast will die, but again, I might be wrong. I think Gaitok may die a hero, and that Rockwell’s Frank could go on to another season. I hope wherever the White Lotus is set next, the guests go into town and look around a bit more.

Wait: this week’s inside joke, TV star Jaclyn has a last name– Lemon– making her Jac Lemon, get it? Jack Lemmon. I always loved the story of Jack Lemmon taking his mother’s urn to the Ritz Carlton Bar in Boston for one last drink. Now there’s a story!

White Lotus: Carrie Coon Says Mike White Cut Backstory of Non-Binary Daughter After Trump Election

0

For “The White Lotus,” apparently gay incest was okay but possibly having a trans child with different pronouns was not.

In the new Harpers Bazaar, one my favorite actresses, Carrie Coon, reveals that sensitive material was tossed to the cutting room floor.

Coon reports that her character, Laurie, supposedly had a back story including a daughter at home going by they/them pronouns. She might have been trans. Laurie had to explain it to her friends — played by Michelle Monaghan and Leslie Bibb — and of course, they weren’t good with it.

Coon tells HB: “The season was written before the election. And considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike [White] felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation.”

It’s amazing that the graphically displayed sexual threesome involving two brothers passed muster, but this conversation did not. Is this why “White Lotus” feels so slow and dull this season? Very little happens (as we’ll see Sunday night) or otherwise feels timely or provocative. If only there had been more of this kind of thing instead of Jason Isaacs prolonged moping around.

Episode 7 airs tonight. I haven’t seen it, but the word is a little meh. Stay tuned…for 10pm and follow me on Twitter at @showbiz411.

PS Carrie Coon also plays Mrs. Russell on “The Gilded Age,” which will return soon. Mrs. Russell is a social climber extraordinaire, with little restraint at all.

“White Lotus” Ratings Down Almost 10% on HBO with Crazy Incest Episode

Did Morgan Wallen Use His Guitar as a Prop on “Saturday Night Live” Last Night for Two New, Lackluster Songs?

0

Is Morgan Wallen the problem?

The country star sang two songs on “SNL” last night including “I’m the Problem.” But did he play live guitar on them, or just play along”?

From the looks of the videos, his instrument was used as a prop around his neck.

There’s a little strumming but no indication that Wallen even attempted to ‘lip sync’ his guitar.

Five other musicians look like they’re miming their own playing.

The songs — “Just in Case” and “I’m the Problem” — were lackluster at best, and short.

Wallen also played his second number sooner than later in the usual spot on the show. He skedaddled when “SNL” ended. He may have already been home in Nashville by the time the after party began.

Did he sell records last night? Hard to say. The singles were already in the top 10, and haven’t cracked number 1.

Did he even want to be there? Didn’t seem like it. After all, he was banned by “SNL” during COVID.

Let’s go to the video tape:

CBS Sends a Signal to Trump Their Relationship with the Kennedy Center Honors Is Tenuous at Best

0

Just following up on my item from Friday.

Today the CBS Sunday Morning show ran a report on the dismantling of the Kennedy Center. Norah O’Donnell did the report admirably.

What was clear is that the relationship between the network — already strained by the Trump lawsuit again “60 Minutes” — is tenuous at best.

CBS has been broadcasting the Kennedy Center Honors for 41 years. The network sent the signal out this morning that that deal is pretty much over if things continue to deteriorate. The Tiffany network will not be showing the Walmart arts show.

O’Donnell tried to get someone from the Kennedy Center to go on record but no one — not even Trump lackey Richard Grennell — would answer.

She did interview ousted president Deborah Rutter, who made it clear that the Center is not “broke” and “woke” as Donald Trump says. O’Donnell did mention that the largest donor, David Rubenstein — was fired after giving $100 million.

Trump appointee Paolo Zampolli was interviewed. A real estate guy from New York with a long history of legal skirmishes, he’s recommending the addition of cafes, and sending art to the Space station. What that has to do with anything is unclear.

CBS could easily invoke a new show called the Lincoln Center Honors once its contract is over this December. New York and Lincoln Center would love it, and they’d have no trouble getting A listers involved.

As for the Kennedy Center, it’s not impossible to imagine Trump removing the name, or the family asking to have it removed for the time being. This is the opposite agenda of John and Jacqueline Kennedy, who made history by celebrating the arts in Washington.

Not Funny: White House Correspondents Group Cuts Comedian Amber Ruffin from Dinner Over Fear of Trump Reprisal

0

This year’s WHite House Correspondent’s Dinner will be purposely bland.

The WHCA has cancelled comedian Amber Ruffin from giving the annual stand up act entertainment at dinner.

Why? Cowardice, fear of reprisal from a president who has already banned the Associated Press from covering him, and rearranged coverage throughout the administration to exclude mainstream media and promote fringe, right wing groups.

It’s pretty pathetic. The WHCA is supposed to support free speech. Now they — like law firms and banks — are waving the white flag.

Ruffin, a player on Seth Meyers’ talk show — is hilarious. But she’s also a woman, and Black, the two things that scare Trump to death. (She’s also an accomplished writer of Broadway shows.)

The current head of the WHCA is 36 years old Eugene Daniels, who is also Black and looking to make a name for himself next with a show on MSNBC.

Daniels said the board of the WHCA voted unanimously not to have any comedic performances at the April 26th dinner.

“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” he said.

Curiously, the group’s website has no indication of the change and is still touting Ruffin as host (at 6pm Saturday).

Trump, who’s treated the Fourth Estate with no respect, and continually berates and belittles them during press conferences, is being let off the hook by Daniels. It’s a stunning decision.

Daniels said in his statement that the board was “re-envisioning” the dinner and that details are forthcoming. Will they just present awards to reporters and not let anyone speak about the current state of affairs ? My guess is members will feel betrayed by their organization. Ruffin certainly must. I’m curious to see if this is dealt with at all on Seth Meyers’ show this week. After all, it was his 2015 hosting of the dinner — during which he picked up apart Trump mercilessly — that gave the aspiring fascist the idea to run for president at all.

As for Daniels, let MSNBC know he has lost all credibility.
