Media: National Enquirer’s Said-to-be Top Suitor in Sale Would Be Odd Fit with Art Magazine, Luxury Brands

0

The New York Post’s Keith Kelly, the top media writer in New York, says that American Media Inc. has a prospective suitor in its proposed sale of the National Enquirer and other supermarket tabloids.

Yesterday, Kelly spotlighted James Cohen, whose father built Hudson News, the massive newsstand and magazine distributor. Jimmy Cohen, as he is known, has tabloid ink running through his veins. His late sister was beloved gossip columnist Claudia Cohen. Jimmy, Kelly points out, is loaded after selling Hudson to to the duty-free shop pioneer Dufry. He remains on the board of Hudson.

Cohen’s only other publication is a very high end art magazine known to few wealthy and high-falutin’ types, called Galerie Magazine. It’s considered a vanity project for his wife, Lisa, who’s reportedly burned through staff and money like there’s no tomorrow. Their most recent editor who didn’t last was Margaret Russell, who came from Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, and is finishing up a six year term on the Kennedy Center board, appointed by President Barack Obama.

These are not people who flip through the National Enquirer. Or want to know about Jeff Bezos’ beeswax.

Then there’s Adam Sandow, the publisher and lifestyle guru from Miami whose company has been the real engine behind Galerie.  His company, called Sandow, also publishes “Luxe,” one of those thick-with-ads for things no one can afford mags. He’s also involved in high-end beauty magazines, the kind with really thick, glossy pages. These people have never felt newsprint in their hands, except when it wraps fish. They do not know about Wendy Williams or her errant husband, or the 29 year old kid who sued his parents for throwing out his porn collection. They think Kardashian is a carpet store on lower Fifth Avenue.

So this should be interesting. The best thing David Pecker can do is get rid of the Enquirer, and fast. But Cohen and his associates may not be the right, er, fit.

Ratings: “Game of Thrones” was a Game-Changer for HBO Comedies “Barry” and “Veep,” Which More Than Tripled and Doubled Their Numbers

0

“Game of Thrones” 11.7 million viewers on HBO itself (17 mil across all HBO platforms) was a Game-changer for the network.

Both “Barry” and “Veep,” which follow at 10pm and 10:30pm, had huge increases because of “GoT.”

“Barry” shot up from around 424,000 viewers the previous week to 1,775,000. Yikes! And “Veep” went up from 473K to over 1 million.

Of course, “Barry,” the subtly hilarious show about a hit man, is a broader experience. When the “GoT” viewers got to “Veep” they witnessed deft political satire and a character– Amy– who had an abortion, and then went back to work. I don’t know if HBO planned it that way, but the timing of the “Veep” episode was excellent. “GoT” gave them a much bigger audience.

Meanwhile, even Showtime’s “Billions” held its own against “Thrones.” They still managed 751,000 viewers, down just 100,000. So we’ll see how DVR viewing went over the next couple of days. I did have to DVR “Billions,” but it was worth it.

Cannes Announcement Likely Not to Include Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”– As Reported Here April 9th

0

The trade magazines are starting to predict the announcement of films at Cannes this year.

The official announcement comes on Thursday, just before the Mueller report is released. What a day!

I told you on April 9th that Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” was not ready, was not a lock, and would not be announced. The film isn’t ready.

Now the trades are backing off “Once Upon a Time.” Remember when one of them insisted it would play on May 21st, the 25th anniversary of “Pulp Fiction” at Cannes?

Now we’re hearing a list of usual suspects– Almodovar, Malick, Loach. As for the latter: no one in America cares about Ken Loach. No one in America has ever cared about him. He’s also a supporter of the BDS (Big Dumb Shits) who are anti-Israel. So we can skip him. (Boxofficemojo.com doesn’t even monitor his films. LOL.)

I know that Thierry Fremaux has many terrific titles up his sleeve. And Tarantino? Like I’ve said before, a wet print can dry on the flight over.

Ultimate TV Mashup: “This is Us” Emmy Winner Sterling K. Brown to Guest Star on Emmy Winner “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”

0

At last! Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown of “This is Us” is finally starting to step away a little from that treacly series. He announced yesterday on Twitter that he’s doing a guest arc on Amazon’s Emmy winning comedy, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Rather than endure endless deaths and sobbing on the NBC show, Brown has decided it’s time for some laughs. In “Mrs. Maisel,” Rachel Brosnahan is a divorcee pursuing a career in stand up comedy circa 1961. Maybe Sterling will play a comic. He’s the most talented actor on prime time TV and he’s ready for a Denzel-like breakout.

RIP Georgia Engel, aka Georgette from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” 5 Time Emmy Nominee and Beloved Character Actress

0

Georgia Engel has died at age 70. She is famous and beloved for playing Georgette, Ted Baxter’s much put upon girlfriend and then wife on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” She was also featured on “Everyone Loves Raymond.” She was nominated twice for  Emmy Awards on “MTM” and three times for “Raymond.” She also had a recurring role on “Coach.”

It’s funny to think that Engel was only 70. Ted Knight, who played Ted Baxter, was twenty five years her senior. Everyone on the show was much older, but Georgette– thrown into that pool of Emmy winners just as Valerie Harper was leaving to start “Rhoda,” held her own with everyone from Ted to Lou Grant, Phyllis and Murray. She seemed naive on the outside and blissfully unaware of what was going on around her, but Engel imbued Georgette with strong underpinnings. Her highlight was Georgette performing “Steam Heat” at the Teddy Awards (the local Emmys.)

Engel comes in at 16:00.

Georgia Engel was such a delight. Condolences to her family. But she lives on in clips.

Winter Wonderland: “Game of Thrones” Season 8 Premiere Pulled 17.4 Mil Viewers Across All Plaforms, 11.8 Mil on HBO Alone

0

“Game of Thrones” season 8 premiere was a winner any way you see it.

The HBO swords and boots opera brought in a whopping 17.4 million fans across all venues including HBO Go and HBO Now. I see now where all those “NCIS Los Angeles” viewers went last night.

On just HBO, “Game of Thrones” pulled over 11 million viewers, which is less than the 12 million for the Season 7 premiere. But it didn’t matter. HBO is simply offering too many ways to see the show. Listen, if you can get 11 million people to sit down and watch a cable show at 9pm, that’s an insanely good accomplishment!

As for the actual episode, Jon Snow doesn’t seem to still get the news that he’s Dany’s nephew or cousin, and that he’s sleeping with her. Maybe by next week, he will have figured it out. And maybe it was only me, but I really liked the dragon rides!

This episode, “Winterfell,” was good at re-establishing everyone and setting up the ending. There should be some cliffhangers coming up. Me, personally? I think Peter Dinklage will sit on the throne. For some reason, he’s the only I can’t imagine dead. But I know NOTHING. Really.

Aretha Franklin Receives a Rare Posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Five Decades of Accomplishments in the Arts

0

I nearly burst into tears this afternoon when Dana Canedy announced this year’s Pulitzer Prizes.

Aretha Franklin, who passed on August 16th, received a rare posthumous Pulitzer for five decades of accomplishments in the arts. The dedication reads: “For her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades.”

This is just a huge honor. I spoke to Canedy, who said she was just sorry they hadn’t given to Aretha when she was alive. No matter. Aretha is singing and giving thanks from Heaven. All her friends and family are so proud of her. Simply amazing.

Previous special citation winners include John Coltrane, Hank Williams, Ray Bradbury, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin. Bob Dylan won it, alive and kicking, in 2010.

Waiting for “Game of Thrones” Ratings: CBS Sunday Night Audience Way Down May Be Indication of HBO Colossal Triumph

0

We wait for “Game of Thrones” ratings from Sunday night. Cable ratings usually don’t come in for 48 hours, so we’ll see if it takes til tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, one indication that the HBO show really conquered Sunday night: the broadcast ratings for CBS’s “NCIS Los Angeles.” Two weeks ago, that show scored 7.5 million viewers from 9 to 10pm Eastern. There was no “GoT.”  (Last week, “NCIS Los Angeles was pre-empted for country music awards.)

Last night, “NCIS Los Angeles” slipped to 6.7 million viewers. That’s a huge drop off. Did those 800,000 people de-camp to HBO? Could be they were just sampling “GoT” because there was so much publicity.

Aunt Becky Doubles Down: Lori Loughlin and Husband Massimo Giannulli Plead Not Guilty in College Admissions Scandal Case

0

For some reason, Lori Loughlin isn’t getting it.

Aunt Becky from “Full House” and her husband, Massimo Giannulli, have been indicted twice by the US Attorney in Boston for mail fraud in the college admissions scandal.

Most of the other parents who were caught, including Felicity Huffman, have pleaded guilty and will accept their sentences.

But the Giannullis are doubling down. They’re pleading not guilty. They want a trial. Loughling may think this is an episode of a Hallmark Hall of Fame show. They want to take their chances with a jury.

Celebrities often triumph in jury trials because the juries are wowed by their TV personas. But a jury in Boston? An academic city with a smart working class? I’d be nervous about this one.

Anyway, maybe the Olsen twins will make a surprise appearance. This should be good.

Meantime, Hallmark has renewed Loughlin’s Hallmark show, “When Calls the Heart,” for a seventh season, but the actress won’t be back. Hallmark has broken all ties with her.

Madonna Announces Name for New Album, “Madame X,” Described as a “Secret Agent, Traveling Around the World, Changing Identities”

0

Madonna is calling her new album “Madame X.” Madame X, she says, is a “Spy in the house of love.” Madame X is many things including a teacher and a whore according to her Instagram post.

This is a very tired idea. Anais Nin’s popular 1954 novel, “A Spy in the House of Love,” was used by a lot of pop stars in the 1980s as a meme. Everyone discovered this idea at the same time. There was a great single in 1989 by Animal Logic by that name.

Some people who knew Madonna thought her last album, “Rebel Heart,” would be her last. “Rebel Heart” was a flop. Fans come to Madonna’s shows to hear her hits. No radio station will play the new songs because, frankly, they don’t play new songs by any legacy artists.

Madonna’s strength was that she always had her finger on the pulse of new ideas. But at 60, it’s hard to do that. Maybe– cross fingers– she’s had someone write her a really catchy pop song. If it’s there, we’ll all hear it right away.

When is “Madame X” being released? I guess, soon. Who knows?
