Let the tributes pour in for Clint Eastwood, who turns 90 years young today. He’s certainly had the most extraordinary career, from TV westerns to Spaghetti westerns to taking charge of his career and becoming a maverick of independent filmmaking.

Clint’s run of films starting with his masterpiece, “Unforgiven,” in 1992 is remarkable. From “Mystic River” to “Million Dollar Baby,” the 1-2 punch of “Flags of our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima,” the self-iconic “Gran Torino,” right up through “The Mule” and “Richard Jewell,” each one of them is an auteur’s vision played out to perfection.

Even the ones that didn’t work or didn’t catch fire with audiences are remarkable in their own right. I just watched “Sully” on cable, it’s such a clean, economic continuation of Clint’s study of heroes. You can’t not watch it once it begins. Same for “American Sniper,” which surprised everyone when audiences clamored for it.

I first really got know Clint in 2000 when I interviewed him for a special Oscars edition I edited for the late Talk magazine. We met at the Carlyle Hotel dining room. He brought his then wife Dina and their little girl. I brought my friend Susan Lawlor, who was a massive fan who could quote from every Eastwood movie. Everyone hit it off. We talked a lot about “Unforgiven,” one of the greatest movies of all time, in my opinion. It was eight years after its release, and still held up wonderfully. Clint was “only 70,” I guess, had the responses and vigor of a 40 year old. I was blown away by his observations about filmmaking — and he still hadn’t made a lot of the films I mentioned above. You could tell that at 70 he still wasn’t at his peak. Amazing.

Of course, there’s also the early Clint– of “Play Misty for Me,” of “Dirty Harry” and all that. He was a stud, a rogue movie star who was hot and didn’t care what people thought. There were no Oscars in his life before 1993. That’s almost 40 years in the business. On Friday, I happened to see an episode of “Rawhide” on cable. He’s tied up for most of the show, with a very loose rope mind you, watching while various mini melodramas ping pong around him. He never says a word while everyone’s talking. But the focus is on him. And in the end, when Rowdy Yates finally speaks, he kind of hits on the pretty girl who’s been in jeopardy. Very quietly. She turns him down, he just sort of says “shucks,” and that’s it. But he’s the star, and you don’t forget it.

Will we get another Clint Eastwood movie? I sure hope so. “Richard Jewell” was a little gem, but its release was bungled in many ways. Watch it again. An 89 year old made something here that has sharp edges and deep insights. If that’s it, we’re damn lucky. But I suspect we’re not done with Clint Eastwood yet.

Yes, Henry Cavill is coming back as Superman/Clark Kent. And he doesn’t cavil about it.

Henry has left three Instagram messages the size of Kryptonite chunks. First, he talked about a chat he had with Zack Snyder about the director’s infamous “Justice League” cut, coming in 2021. Then he posted a picture of himself in the gym. And then there’s his dog, Kal, named for Superman’s birth name, Kal-El. What more do you need? Will his return be more than just the “Justice League” reboot? I think so. He’s a great Superman. All he needs is a terrific “Man of Steel” script. And who doesn’t love the rest of that cast, starting with Amy Adams?

Just had a little chat with Zack Snyder after a man of steel watch party. Ladies and Gents, it finally happened. The Snyder cut will be out next year! Now, I know there have been two camps over the whole Snyder Cut thing and whether it will ever happen for a while. Just remember, we all get to have more Justice League now, it's a win win. The Telluride Film Festival has decided to press on despite the pandemic. They’ll begin one day early, on September 3rd, to give everyone a chance to find chic enough masks to wear in the Colorado Mountains.

Telluride is a very private festival. They don’t announce their film list until you’ve plunked down a considerable amount of money. This is one festival where you pay for your press pass, and it’s expensive. Everything there is expensive, including the hotels and the airfare. But the upside is intimate private time with the stars and makers of films that may go on to win the Oscar.

Will all the players come this year? I’ll bet they will, simply because of a summer of boredom. Will they get sick? Some will say it would be worth it. Good luck to them. But I suppose the town of Telluride needs the revenue, so one way or another there’s got to be a festival. The dates, by the way, overlap with Venice and precede Toronto.

The New Yorkers and Hollywooders who fly into Telluride should know that Colorado has not been spared from the pandemic. The Rocky Mountain State has had 23,964 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,327 deaths so far.

From the very beginning, the founders of the Telluride Film Festival declined to call it an “annual” event. Like most things with the SHOW, this was intentional. There was an understanding that life is indeed full of uncertainty. Maybe there wouldn’t be a festival every year…and it has made each eventual Labor Day celebration that much sweeter.

We see clearly the obstacles that are cruelly, tragically and stubbornly in our way this year in orders of magnitude our dear founders might not ever have envisioned.

But there has been a determination to proceed, in large part fueled by the voices in our community. This community understands that movies really are empathy machines, that when we assemble to witness the glories of cinema together, something magical happens. We humbly suggest that our world needs the light of cinema and its beautiful by-products of compassion and emotional storytelling alchemy like never before.

We are not ignorant of the devastation facing the world. We feel the fear and distress too. This is why we are committed to observing all guidance as suggested by the consensus of voices of the scientific community with whom we are consulting now. This will not be a business as usual event. Things will look and feel very different.

We’re contacting you today to let you know we’re hard at work to provide a safe and joyous environment that will include an extra day to allow more space within and between screenings, along with all of the necessary safety tweaks and adjustments you’ve become very familiar with, regardless of where you call home.

The festival will begin Thursday, September 3, instead of Friday, and will end on Monday, as usual. We will have a charter from New York City, in addition to our usual charters from Los Angeles, to ensure easier and more controlled transit for our East Coast friends.

Your comfort and safety are the most important things to us. A defining characteristic of our community and especially of the dedicated volunteers who bring you the SHOW, is remarkable willpower – and grit. We promise to marshal these qualities to create the most secure environment possible for all of us.

For those of you who opt to not join us, we absolutely understand and support this decision. Your reasons surely involve heightened personal health concerns and you must do what is the very best for you. We trust and hope you’ll be back with us the next time we can provide optimal conditions for the SHOW. May that be soon.
