Review: Tom Hanks WWII Submarine Movie “Greyhound” Would Have Been a Hit in Theaters, See it On Apple TV

0

If there had been a premiere for Aaron Schneider’s “Greyhound” with Sony Pictures, I would have happily congratulated the director, the star Tom Hanks, and his son Chet, who gives a striking cameo performance in this taut World War II battle drama.

“Greyhound” debuts on Apple TV Friday, it was supposed to be released by Sony in theaters. I sure hope they give it a chance this winter in some theaters because these people worked their asses off to making a very convincing, edge of your seat battle film that’s 90 minutes long and never lets up.

Schneider, who hasn’t had a movie in 11 years since “Get Low” (where was he?), has done a top notch job directing, and Hanks himself wrote the screenplay. It feels a lot like Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” in which Hanks starred. There isn’t a lot of character development, but the casting is good enough that you get the idea about Capt. Ernie Krause as he steers his ship through the treacherous water of North Atlantic in 1942 heading to the UK with a convoy of ships from Canada and Britain trying to dodge Nazi U Boats.

“Greyhound” is fiction in that novelist CS Lewis took the idea for his story in the novel, “The Good Shepherd,” which this inspired, from the real Battle of the Atlantic, the longest every military exercise that ran from 1939 to 1945. Merchant ships had to cross the Atlantic during WWII. These military ships had to protect them. It was not an easy business: at least 75,000 men Allied seamn died over the years. The Germans lost 28,000 out of 41,000 men. Ships were lost. Lewis invented Captain Krause as a religious man who wound up leading a convoy for the very first time in a terrifying crossing.

“Greyhound” probably looks great on a regular movie screen. If you have a large TV set, you’ll appreciate Shelly Johnson’s excellent cinematography. The whole production looks terrific; I’d like to know how they pulled it off for $50 million. Bravo.

Tom Hanks, as usual, pulls off a master class performance. His acting and his writing really seem to be inspired by Clint Eastwood’s later work–there’s no fat, it’s very intense, you’re in the grip of the work. Lewis wrote it that way in his novel. You’re just experiencing this relentless attack through Krause. And all you know about Krause is that he has a lady friend waiting for him played by Elisabeth Shue, who is always a welcome sight.

There’s some very good work among the supporting cast, starting with Rob Morgan and including the accomplished British actor Stephen Graham. There are a lot of young guys as the seamen, all well chosen. I did notice an actor from TV’s “One Tree Hill” named Lee Norris (fans will say I know that guy). But special kudos to Chet Hanks, Tom’s son, who has a really great turn with his dad on screen, quite different than his half brother Colin Hanks. Chet, who’s had his share of non acting publicity, acquits himself beautifully.

Schneider gives “Greyhound” a documentary feel. For Hanks, it’s a little bit “Captain Phillips,” only for a bit until the action begins. And then you don’t have time to think about other movies.

“Days of Our Lives” Surprise As Soap Star Kristian Alfonso Exits After 37 Years, Posts Message Deliberately Excluding Producer Ken Corday

0

“Days of our Lives” producer Ken Corday, the cheapest man in show business, is trimming his sails to make it through another season.

The big news is that Kristian Alfonso, who’s played Hope Brady for 37 years, will not return in September when the show goes back into production. She says it’s time to move on, but it’s pretty clear Corday would not give her what she wanted in a new contract.

Corday has also lost Greg Meng, his executive producer for 31 years. Meng ran the show with Albert Alarr, but again, money brought his “Days” career to an end.

You have to wonder what goes through Corday’s mind as he has grown richer and richer and the show dies on the vine. “Days” production is maybe the worst in television. Sometimes the lighting is so harsh you think the actors will sue for optical damage.

In her parting message, Alfonso very pointedly thanks Corday’s late mother, Betty Corday, aka Mrs. Ted Corday, who ran the show from Day 1 after her husband unexpectedly died in 1965 soon after the series’ launch. Alfonso purposely leaves out son Ken, a misery who is the living example of how the second generation screws up success.

“General Hospital” would be very smart to scoop Alfonso up ASAP.

Exclusive: It Was Prince Andrew Who Gave Kevin Spacey and Ghislaine Maxwell Permission to Sit on the Queen’s Throne

On Saturday the UK Telegraph broke a great story about actor Kevin Spacey and Jeffrey Epstein madam Ghislaine Maxwell– now under arrest — sitting on Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s thrones in 2002 at Buckingham Palace.

Spacey and Maxwell were there with a group that included former President Bill Clinton, who wisely must have declined the chance to do such a disrespectful thing.

Spacey, accused of a number of sexual harassment incidents, is now a pariah in the world, especially Hollywood. Maxwell could be facing life in prison.

But who let them sit in the thrones, as seen in this much distributed photo?

Sources tell me exclusively that it was Maxwell’s buddy, Prince Andrew, who was with them and encouraged them to do it.

On a tour of the Queen’s private residence, Spacey asked Andrew’s permission, and got it. The Prince, says a source, replied: “I don’t believe the Queen is here. I don’t see why not.”

Once Spacey was seated in the Queen’s chair, he summoned Maxwell. “Come be my Queen!” he told Ghislaine, who joined right in.

Andrew was long associated with Maxwell and now dead sex fiend Epstein, as has been well recorded. Now that Maxwell has been arrested and will soon be in New York to stand trial– and/or sing like a bird– the US Attorney for Southern District of New York wants to speak to Prince Andrew. He’s denied everything so far, but unless he can get Maxwell to keep quiet, he could be in a lot of trouble.

Spacey wasn’t doing much in 2002, other than a cameo in “Austin Powers in Goldmember.” It’s unclear why he was in London, although did visit there frequently. In 2004, he started running the Old Vic Theater. In April of that year Spacey said he was “brutally mugged” while walking his dog in a London park at 4:30 in the morning. The muggers obviously didn’t realize he was the Queen!

“Hamilton” CD Soars Back to Number 1 on iTunes, Sells More Copies Over Weekend than It Did Last Week

0

“Hamilton” is on Disney Plus so we’re never going to know how well it’s doing, or did on its first weekend of streaming.

But we do know what’s happening with the CD, which should be some indication.

On Friday and Saturday, the “Hamilton” soundtrack sold over 20,000 copies. Sunday should have added another 10,000.

That’s more copies than it sold in all of last week leading up the DisneyPlus release. Last week, “Hamilton” sold 24,000 copies.

The highest selling Broadway score of all time, “Hamilton” has already sold 350,000 copies since January 1st and at least 3.4 million since its release in 2016. Kudos to Pete Ganbarg and Atlantic Records for snatching up the rights the minute they saw it!

Also on the iTunes chart is the “Hamilton Mix Tape,” on Sony Music, at number 11.

Nick Cordero’s Wife, Amanda, Writes About His Tragic Death: “My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him”

Amanda Kloots, Nick Cordero’s devoted wife, has posted a long, sad message to Instagram following her husband’s death. She writes:

“God has another angel in heaven now. My darling husband passed away this morning. He was surrounded in love by his family, singing and praying as he gently left this earth.

I am in disbelief and hurting everywhere. My heart is broken as I cannot imagine our lives without him. Nick was such a bright light. He was everyone’s friend, loved to listen, help and especially talk. He was an incredible actor and musician. He loved his family and loved being a father and husband. Elvis and I will miss him in everything we do, everyday.

To Nicks extraordinary doctor, Dr. David Ng, you were my positive doctor! There are not many doctors like you. Kind, smart, compassionate, assertive and always eager to listen to my crazy ideas or call yet another doctor for me for a second opinion. You’re a diamond in the rough.
⠀⠀
I cannot begin to thank everyone enough for the outpour of love , support and help we’ve received these last 95 days. You have no idea how much you lifted my spirits at 3pm everyday as the world sang Nicks song, Live Your Life. We sang it to him today, holding his hands. As I sang the last line to him, “they’ll give you hell but don’t you light them kill your light not without a fight. Live your life,” I smiled because he definitely put up a fight. I will love you forever and always my sweet man. ❤️”

UPDATE Unfortunately, I can confirm that the story is true. Nick is said to have passed around 11:30am at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. He really was beloved, a great great guy who had hundreds of people he didn’t even known pulling for him. Fans and friends, castmates and their families were all posting videos singing a song Nick wrote called “Live Your Life.” It was an extraordinary show of support.

There are reports that Nick Cordero has died after a valiant fight and 91 days in the hospital.

Nick was a Broadway nominated actor who starred in many shows including “Bullets over Broadway” and “A Bronx Tale.” He was recently married and had a 1 year old son, Elvis.

UPDATE Kanye West’s Presidential Candidacy Announcement Unexpected Result: Kills Sales of His Music

0

We thought maybe Kanye West’s announcement that he’s running for president would help his music sales.

Alas, it’s had the opposite effect.

Overnight, Kanye’s latest single, “Wash Us in the Blood,” dropped from number 2 to number 27 on iTunes. It has yet to show up on an Apple Music chart. On Spotify, the single has just under 9 million streams, which adds up to very little in actual sales.

None of Kanye’s albums bounced back onto the charts. Not one.

The overall reaction to Kanye’s announcement is not a showing of mass support by…anyone…except Elon Musk. And we’re not  sure about him, are we? His cars have a tendency to explode.

But Elon and Kanye seem to have had some kind of recent meeting. On Instagram, Kanye captioned a photo of them together and called the eccentic entrepreneur “my boy.” He’s glad they’re each wearing orange. He’s forgotten that Orange is the New Black.

What would a Kanye cabinet look like? Kim K as Attorney General, natch. Travis Scott as vice president. Mike Dean, Secretary of State. And the rest he could just sample from previous administrations. The only administration would be an interpolation.

Why Not? Kanye West Says on Twitter and Instagram He’s Running for President This Year, 2020

Because things can’t get much weirder, Kanye West says he’s running for president NOW in 2020.

He writes: We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States

An avowed Trump supporter, Kanye could be having a manic depressive episode. Or really mean it, this weekend. Who knows? We’ve learned not to take anything he says too seriously. He does have a new Christian album coming out soon, and a new single on the charts, so maybe it has something to do with that. I guess we’ll see.

BTW “Wash Us in the Blood,” Kanye’s new single, has so far sold only 4,700 copies. Streaming numbers bring it up to 30,000.
