Grammy Nominations (Main List) Perplex, and The Weeknd, Other Omissions Show Lack of Improvement Over Last Year

0

The Grammy nominations this morning were supposed to be a slam dunk. From all sides, it looked like the choices would be easy. Instead, they are perplexing. So many names no one’s ever heard of. Botched categories. Not a single nod for The Weeknd after he was touted as the leader. So many omissions.

Anyway here’s the list from the General Field, as they call it. I think they’re lucky there’s no audience this year. We’ve drifted into the bizarro world. Alicia Keys must be mortified. Nothing? Are you kidding?

The General Field (Big Four) Categories are here. I’ll add to them once I can find the rest. Also, in Best New Artist, I’m sorry, but Noah Cyrus is a new act?

What? Dave Chappelle Asks Netflix to Remove “Chappelle’s Show” Despite Touting it on “Saturday Night Live”

0

Comedian Dave Chappelle has asked Netflix to remove “Chappelle’s Show” from their service, and they’ve obliged. He posted a video to Instagram explaining:

“They (ViacomCBS) didn’t have to pay me because I signed the contract,” Chappelle says in the video. “But is that right? I found out that these people were streaming my work and they never had to ask me or they never have to tell me. Perfectly legal ‘cause I signed the contract. But is that right? I didn’t think so either. That’s why I like working for Netflix. I like working for Netflix because when all those bad things happened to me, that company didn’t even exist. And when I found out they were streaming ‘Chappelle’s Show,’ I was furious. How could they not– how could they not know? So you know what I did? I called them and I told them that this makes me feel bad. And you want to know what they did? They agreed that they would take it off their platform just so I could feel better.”

Nevertheless, Chappelle was happy to report the show’s inclusion when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” recently.

SHOCKER 2021 Grammy Nominations SNUBS The Weeknd, Gets Zero Nods, Alicia Keys, Bob Dylan Also Strike Out

0

GRAMMY SHOCKER: The Weekend was totally snubbed by the Grammys. No nominations at all for his album, “After Hours,” or any of the hits on it.

EVERY predictor of the Grammys predicted The Weeknd would WIN Best Album and be nominated in many categories. He didn’t even get R&B noms. “After Hours” omission is a scandal. The album sold 1.8 million copies including streaming, nearly 500,000 CDS and downloads.

What happened???

The overall nominations are exceedingly weird. Keep refreshing for the full list.

Now we know why Alicia Keys isn’t hosting the show. She released a new album and they gave her nothing. Nothing. Her “Underdog” should have been in the mix. I’m shocked.

I did say that The Weeknd would be punished for participating in Sunday’s American Music Awards, and I was right.

Bob Dylan was totally overlooked for his acclaimed, “Rough and Rowdy.”
Not even in Traditional or Pop. Nothing.

Lady Gaga’s “Chromatica” album picked up a few nods but no Album of the Year.

Coldplay, whose 2020 album sold two copies and disappeared from the charts, got an Album of the Year nod.

Justin Bieber, whose music is negligible, got nods for his records “Yummy” and “Intentions.”

There was nothing for Ariana Grande either, despite having several releases.

A key winner in the noms is Brittany Howard, of the group Alabama Shakes. Her solo debut album, a sales flop, had several entries.

The “Rock” category is a total embarrassment, by the way. Rock has been so diminished that the nominees barely matter. Many of the “lesser” categories are from people never heard of. It’s quite amazing. If the Recording Academy was going for diversity they also delved into the unknown.

And Post Malone, maybe the height of mediocrity, was nominated for Album of the Year. Don’t tell me publicists and execs weren’t influential this year.

Grammy Nominations Coming Tuesday at 12 Noon EST: Will Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” Prevail And Will Bob Dylan’s “Masterpiece” be Remembered?

0

The 2021 Grammy nominations are coming tomorrow– Tuesday–at 12 Noon. Come back here to see what happens.

Last year’s awards had a glaring omission: Taylor Swift and her “Lover” album got very short shrift. Billie Eilish won Best Album and a bunch of other awards. It was bizarre, and people are still talking about it.

Swift was “punished” basically by the record biz for picking a fight with Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta over ownership of her master recordings. She dared to question the patriarchy. Whoops!

Well, a lot has happened in the biz since last year, starting with a bunch of scandals surrounding last winter’s Grammys. It made for a very bad awards season.

Much has changed except for one thing: Taylor got screwed a second time on her masters. This time they were sold by Braun and Borchetta to an investment fund. Ouch!

Meanwhile, Swift’s album, “Folklore,” was the biggest hit of the year. If things were honky dory, she’d be up for Album, Record, Song, Pop Female Performance at a minimum. Will that be the case at noon?

And then we have the case of The Weeknd aka Abel Tesfaye. He had a big hit album called “After Hours.” But The Weeknd went along with the American Music Awards, accepting their invitation to accept awards and perform his hits. The Grammys traditionally have frowned on repeating the AMAs. If you perform on the earlier show, you’re out of luck at the actual industry awards. Granted, The Weeknd appeared in a surgical mask so you couldn’t see him. This may have been a concession to the Grammys: no footage of The Weeknd from the AMAs.

Last, what about Bob Dylan? His “Rough and Rowdy Ways” was hailed as a masterpiece last winter. Will he be relegated to Traditional and Americana categories? Or will the Grammy committees acknowledge his album was the actual work of art reviewers said? Or will he be totally forgotten?

What follows below is the betting line from SportsBettingDime.com. They have no Dylan and no Best Song nominee from Swift, even though “Betty” should be in there. They’ve also got Fiona Apple’s most recent unlistenable release, “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” which sold 61,000 CDs and downloads, another 40K in streaming of singles, etc. and required massive amounts of caffeine. Their other two Album of  the Year choices are the unremarkable Post Malone and the enjoyable Dua Lipa. We’ll see what happens at high noon.

Reports: Happy Ending as Trump Tower, Surrounding Streets Will Be Liberated from Police Protection, Re-opened

Of the many egregious things that happened the last four years, certainly the one that impacted New Yorkers most was the police presence around Trump Tower and the closing of East 56th Street between Fifth and Madison.

Well, that’s all going to change now that Trump is out as president and his primary residence will be in Palm Beach, Florida.

According to several reports tonight, The NYPD and U.S. Secret Service will work together to lessen the law enforcement footprint around Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue after Donald Trump leaves the White House in January. ABC News and WINS Radio are each reporting the welcome news.

Even better, East 56th St. will be reopened to traffic and business. I hope they have an official ceremony with a ribbon cutting. There’s joy in Mudville again!

Trump will not be welcome socially in New York, neither will Melania. I guess Barron will transfer to a school in Palm Beach near Mar-a-Lago, and we will never have to hear about them again. Next year, Broadway will re-open, society will kick back into high gear, and this whole thing will have been a very bad dream.

As for Trump Tower, no real New Yorkers ever went in there, anyway. No one ate there, and there was reason to be there. It was always a cheap reminder of the developer, who abused his own privileges when he destroyed the famed doors to the Bonwit Teller department store against the edict of the Landmark Commission.

Toldya: Ken Jennings, Greatest Player of All Time, Named Interim Host of “Jeopardy!” When Show Resumes January 11th

0

I told you two weeks ago that Ken Jennings was the next host of “Jeopardy!” My inside sources said he was being groomed for th job and was even given a new job on staff there this year.

Now producers have announced as much, saying Jennings– the greatest player of all time– will get his tryout beginning January 11th.

“Alex believed in the importance of Jeopardy! and always said that he wanted the show to go on after him,” said Executive Producer Mike Richards in a statement. “We will honor Alex’s legacy by continuing to produce the game he loved with smart contestants and challenging clues. By bringing in familiar guest hosts for the foreseeable future, our goal is to create a sense of community and continuity for our viewers.”

They say they’re going to rotate in a few different hosts in January. But by February sweeps, Jennings– unless he proves to be a dud– should get the permanent nod.

Ratings: “American Music Awards” Drops 45% with JLo, Others Lip Synching, Record Low Numbers Average of 3.7 Million Viewers

0

The 2020 American Music Awards on ABC were a ratings disaster, no surprise. The show scored 4.4 million viewers in its first hour and then dropped like a rock to 3.8 and then just 3.1 million as viewers tuned out and left for “The Undoing” on HBO, football on NBC, and test patterns anywhere.

Last year’s show had 6.7 million viewers, it’s about a 45% drop.

The early bigger number was thanks to opening the show with Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes, who sang whining complaints about being rich, famous, and lonely. After that, award after award was a pre-packaged marketing chapter. The Weeknd’s head was covered in surgical tape all night, as if he were having a face lift and rhinoplasty. Why? Who knows?

Taraji P. Henson was an amiable and peppy host, but she was fighting a losing battle in the empty Microsoft Theater.

I’d say this bodes poorly for the real awards shows this winter, the Grammys and Oscars. And even the Golden Globes. This succession of “fake” awards shows has undermined interest in the real thing, that’s for sure.

But this show was particularly awful. Many of the acts lip-synched, most prominently Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, who didn’t even hide it. The few live performances were admirable. I give Katy Perry credit, she just had a baby! Her voice wasn’t perfect, but it was genuine, and she and Darius Rucker were affecting.

The presenters, however, were straight out of US Magazine, low rent, and head scratching about why they were even there. And they looked uncertain, too.

The AMAs, like the People’s Choice Awards a couple of weeks ago, were produced by Dick Clark Productions, owned by the same company as Hollywood trade papers The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, and Variety.

LIVE Review: 2020 American Music Awards Are a Live Trainwreck, Handing Out Statues to Pre-Arranged Winners

0

keep refreshing…

Like the recent People’s Choice Awards, the 2020 American Music Awards on ABC are a disaster. The “Winners” are pre-arranged. They’re either sitting backstage or they’ve pre-taped their acceptance speeches.

Much as I love Taraji P. Henson, she’s hosting a trainwreck in progress.

Justin Bieber, the most overindulged child in the world, opened the show singing his new hits, “Lonely.” and “Holy.” The former is a song in which he whines about being rich and lonely. The second exploits the Cross, and tries to wrap itself in some kind of religious hokum while “rushing to the altar like a track star.”

Bieber is a moron, so okay. But Shawn Mendez, who I thought more of, now performs a duet with Bieber on yet another song about being rich and lonely and misunderstood. A pandemic is wreaking havoc on the world, the US government is in chaos, and this is all they can think of to sing about. Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan they are not. Nothing is blowing in the wind. Air is blowing through their coiffed heads.

What else? Katy Perry had a nice duet with Darius Rucker, trying to revive her dead “Smile” album. The Weeknd, selected as the winner of many awards tonight, performed with surgical tape and mask covering his face. This is to hide from the Grammy Awards, which won’t allow AMAs performers to be on their show in January. Thus, this show has no Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and so on.

But JLo and Maluma did lip synch very badly to some Spanish song. Why does she even bother? No one is buying this record.

As the show wore on, the people who were won more awards. And KPop BTS won the same award they got last year, and said so. LOL.

The American Music Awards are coming from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. There is no one in the audience, but a few fans have been put up in the rafters to simulate lifelike-ness.

So far, the only performance that made sense, in a way, was Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas.

Ratings and updates tomorrow. The People’s Choice was a ratings flop. I suspect the same here.

PS “The Undoing” is on HBO, “The Crown” is on Netflix. The Four Tops are always on Spotify.

Dear Donald Trump:
It’s over. Read this. All GOP read this. At least one Republican has the sense to end this chaos. Thank you, Senator Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.
