Grammys Snub of The Weeknd Comes Back to Bite Them: Singer Says He’s Boycotting Awards in the Future

0

We knew this would be a problem.

The Weeknd tells the New York Times he’s boycotting the Grammy Awards because they totally snubbed him this year.

He says in a story about the Grammys: “Because of the secret committees,” the Weeknd said, “I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys.”

The Weeknd had the best selling album of 2020, “After Hours,” and a number 1 hit that has stayed high on the charts, “Blinding Lights.” His label, Columbia, put out a greatest hits record in advance of the Super Bowl that has been a huge hit, too.

So while the Grammys will have many big stars and performances — and maybe even Adele or Beyonce — they’ll be missing the biggest star of the last year.

This would be as if the Oscars just ignored a main movie of significance in a given year because someone on a committee didn’t like the director or his agent. It can’t be done.

This isn’t the first time the Grammys have omitted a big star or album, and I dare say this isn’t about race. A few years ago they overlooked Justin Timberlake’s highly praised “The 20/20 Experience” album. It was the biggest seller– massive– of 2013. But the Grammys just chucked it. No explanation.

So, it happens.

Justin Bieber is also boycotting the Grammys. That’s because he’s made his album only got a nomination in Pop Vocal, not in R&B, a traditionally Black category. Bieber is not Black. He has delusions of grandeur, or something. Anyway, that’s a fight no one will pick for him. He should be grateful people speak to him.

As for The Weeknd, he clearly doesn’t need the Grammys. I don’t know why the Recording Academy a)let that happen and b} didn’t do something to appease The Weeknd immediately.  But no one asked me.

The show will go on, Sunday, with a 3pm live stream and an 8pm show on CBS.

From January 25th: Nailing Hammer: Armie Hammer, His Father, the Art Scandal, and $100 Mil Foundation

Note: I’m re-upping this story from January 25th because I see Vanity Fair has their version today. Imitation is the sincerest form of imitation, you know.

EXCLUSIVE You may be aware of this winter’s hot story: young, good looking actor Armie Hammer, famous from “The Social Network” and “The Lone Ranger,” is being described in the tabloids as a cannibal. Yes, the kind that eats people. Ex girlfriends are lining up to tell horrifying stories of Armie’s predilections for carving his initials into their thighs and suggesting he roast their not so spare ribs.

Armie, it’s pretty clear, is Christian Grey without a safe word.

But he’s also told a few of these gals that he’s hard up for money, and they believed him. One drove 1,400 miles with him from Los Angeles to Dallas because he said he couldn’t afford the plane fare.

Well, that may not exactly be true. Armie is the great grandson of deceased quarter billionaire Armand Hammer, the man who started Occidental Petroleum. When he died 30 years ago, Hammer was thought to be worth $200 million, which would be about $400 million today. Michael inherited (with his sister, Casey) a sizable chunk of that money, as well as two art galleries and two foundations. The galleries are gone. The foundations together have net assets of over $100 million.

Grandfather Armand was a pretty bad guy, according to biographer Edward Jay Epstein. His son, Julian, was a loser with an arrest record, so everything went to Julian’s son –and Armie’s dad — Michael Hammer. Michael’s claim to fame is that two years ago he settled a multi-million case brought against him and the 146 year old Knoedler Art Gallery, which Michael inherited from his grandfather. At Knoedler, Michael paid himself $400,000 a year in salary and took a 20% commission on sales– even though he was rarely there.

Under Michael’s aegis. Knoedler — founded in 1865 — was liquidated in 2011 under the cloud of fraud and forgery.

The demise of the famed Knoedler Art Gallery in art circles is famous. Michael managed to walk away from accusations of fraud but had to pony up for years of making millions from selling forged paintings to wealthy buyers.

Michael Hammer used Knoedler as a personal piggy bank. Armie’s dad, as described in US District Court Judge Paul G. Gardephe’s decision (see below), bought very expensive cars (including a Rolls Royce worth over $450,000) had the gallery reimburse him, and then sold them for a profit that he pocketed. He also took lots of trips and claimed all of this as business expenses.

Armie benefited from all of it. From the judge’s decision:

“[Michael] Hammer regularly used a corporate credit card to pay for his business expenses
and his personal expenses. He also provided corporate credit cards to his ex-wife, Dru Hammer, and to his sons, Viktor and Armie Hammer, all of whom used these credit cards to pay for both business and personal expenses. In total, the Hammers charged $2.7 million to their corporate cards between 2005 and 2014.”

But what nailed Hammer wasn’t his wild spending. What brought down Knoedler was the big ticket forged art sold through the gallery for years. Michael Hammer successfully persuaded the judge to believe he didn’t know what was going on in his own business. Instead, an associate named Ann Freedman took the fall.

Nevertheless, all those millions spent by the Hammers came from proceeds of those art sales. In the end, Michael Hammer had to settle millions with the defrauded buyers.

In the Epstein book about Armand Hammer called “Dossier: The Secret History of Armand Hammer,” published in 1996, Michael was married to wife Dru, mother of his two sons. a Born Again Christian from Dallas who the author was told was trying to wrangle the entire Hammer fortune. She started a foundation for Christian efforts under the name of her father, Douglas Mobley. It was Mobley, Epstein said, who announced the death of Armand Hammer in 1990.

Michael Hammer had pretty much rejected his grandfather’s Jewish heritage, it was noted. He was donating large sums to Christian organizations. But in 2012, Michael and Dru divorced. She’s been described by the tabloids as the kind of Christian who “lays on hands” and “speaks in tongues.” But a source tells me, “She’s not that bad.” She began her own ministry, Hammeredheart.org, described as “helping women and children who have gone through difficult times through divorce and abuse.”

Years ago, Michael Hammer moved his young family to the Cayman Islands, and that’s where Armie is now with his soon to be ex wife Elizabeth Chambers, and their two children. They are HQd in Cayman because it’s a tax shelter, not for the good education or the food. The Hammer Art Gallery, separate from Knoedler, in Manhattan closed last June because of the pandemic.

The Armand Hammer Foundation carries on. At the end of 2018, the fair market value of the Foundation, according to their tax filing, was over $103 million. Michael paid himself a salary of $305,000. Its biggest asset listed in the tax return is Art Work valued at $66 million.

But he also paid a consulting fee of $750,000 to a local consultant called Bull Canyon, Inc. owned by Mark Alfano, a transplanted New Jersey garage mechanic who takes care of Hammer’s 27 fancy cars. (The number comes from the judge’s summary of the case.) Alfano, 33, has also been identified identified in a local Santa Barbara, California website as chief of staff of the Armand Hammer Foundation.

The second biggest asset noted on their Form 990 of the Armand Hammer Foundation is $4.2 million owed to them by Hammer International, a separate, second foundation with assets of $6 million run by… Michael Hammer. In 2018, Hammer International’s only donation was $337,875 to the First Assembly of God– so Michael’s still a believer. Total expenses came to $183,000 including $11,804 for travel. Certainly, Michael Hammer would have given his movie star son plane tickets for a visit to see mom on the holidays.

As for Armand Hammer’s original business: it has nothing to do with Arm & Hammer baking soda. The original company, Occidental Petroleum, still exists although it’s unclear if Michael Hammer has anything to do with it. He says in his biographical material that he has a long association with them. But his name isn’t listed anywhere on their website.

MusiCares Event Friday Night Accessible for First Time Ever with Performances by HAIM, H.E.R., Jhené Aiko, and John Legend

Every year I tell you about the Person of the Year dinner for MusiCares in Los Angeles. Upwards of 3,000 people jam into the LA Convention Center to rub elbows with stars and see amazing live performances.

Tomorrow night, for the first time ever, the MusiCares event will be accessible to everyone everywhere. The ticket is just $25. I paid for it myself– I figured, parking at the Convention Center would have been 20 bucks anyway. And MusiCares needs the money for musicians.

There will be live performances from HAIM, H.E.R., Jhené Aiko, and John Legend. Plus special appearances by Carole King, Jesse & Joy, Jonas Brothers, Ledisi, Lionel Richie, Macklemore, Mick Fleetwood, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Shakira.

MusiCares is also featuring performances from past years that have never seen by the public, from Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, and Usher.  I saw them– and they are great.

Go to https://support.musicares.org/ and buy your ticket. Buy many! MusiCares supports musicians in need, all kinds of need, from medical to mental to physical to financial. If you love rock and roll and soul and country and pop, this is the most important night of the year!

“Grey’s Anatomy” Without Meredith Grey a Possibility as Ellen Pompeo Wants More Money, or Cancel the Series

0

UPDATE: Thursday night “Grey’s” returned and killed off another main character.

EARLIER: Will “Grey’s Anatomy” make it a 20th season?

Not if Ellen Pompeo has anything to do with it. Pompeo is publicly negotiating for more money to keep playing insipid Meredith Grey beyond this season, number 17.

The show gave her COVID this season and put her in a coma. She’s been in bed whilst dreaming of being on a beach, running into all the other actors fired by Shonda Rhimes over the last 2 decades.

Tonight the series resumes with a crossover special with “Station 19,” the other Rhimes show that’s turned into a surprise success spun off from “Grey’s.”

Meantime, showrunner Krista Vernoff has been giving interviews this week threatening that she’s writing a series finale in case Pompeo doesn’t make a deal with ABC and Shondaland.

But really, ABC doesn’t want to cancel “Grey’s.” The ratings are still good, the show has a lot of fans, there’s a big cast and crew dependent on paychecks far less than Pompeo’s.

Plus, “Grey’s” is an ensemble piece. It never lived or died on the saga of Meredith Grey. If the character dies or moves away, life at Sloan Grey Hospital will continue, and the writers can just tell the stories of the other characters without missing a beat.

Pompeo is already the highest paid female in TV. She’s rich beyond imagination. What else does she want?. She’s not nominated for Emmy awards. She was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2007. Since then she’s become a favorite of the sketchy People’s Choice Awards. If “Grey’s” is cancelled, I guarantee you she’ll be spearheading a reunion series on Netflix within three years.

Vernoff and Rhimes were smart to put Meredith in a COVID coma this season. That’s allowed all the other characters to get on with their business. On daytime soaps producers minimize a character so the audience is used to them not being on screen before they exit. Seems like Pompeo is headed in that direction.

Justin Bieber: This is Why No One Takes Him Seriously, He’s Promoting Socks with Crocs

0

Justin Bieber: why does no one take him seriously? He must wonder that, too, when his head isn’t all the way up his own arse.

His latest single, “Hold On,” is a dud, number 21 and falling after a week. His tour isn’t selling. He’s laughable.

And then comes a press release this morning:

JUSTIN BIEBER SOLIDIFIES CROCS AND SOCKS AS MUST-HAVE FASHION PAIRING WITH SECOND COLLABORATION

“Crocs with socks is definitely the move,” said Justin Bieber. “They’re comfortable, they’re fashionable, and most importantly it’s fun to bring your own style to how you wear them. It’s been a blast bringing this latest collaboration with Crocs to life.”

Imagine receiving such an announcement in the 70s from Stevie Wonder or James Taylor. Think of Bono sending this out right before “The Joshua Tree” album.

Songs in the Key of Crocs? Mud Slide Socks?

Justin Bieber is an embarrassment to the music community and to humanity at large.

In sum: “The iconic silhouette comes bundled with a pair of drew house-branded socks, making it official that Crocs and socks are, indeed, better together. The addition elevates the partnership with a cozy vibe that represents Bieber’s style and personality.”

The whole thing is a crock. LOL. At least he’s consistent.

LOL from Jimmy Kimmel Show: Sacha Baron Cohen Might Be Selling Vaccines to Celebrities

0

This is just outrageously smart and funny. On Jimmy Kimmel, it seems like Sacha Baron Cohen might be selling vaccines to celebrities. His strung out wife, Isla Fisher, appears to be drinking the vaccines 25 at a time. And, of course, the Hollywood Foreign Press is involved.

Highlights include a call from Kanye West. Cohen says: “I can get you Johnson and Johnson. No, not Dakota and Don.”

Also: “Trust me, no one from the Hollywood Foreign Press is getting COVID any time soon.”

And Tom Cruise calls in: “I thought the Thetans were immune.”

Brilliant.

Geraldo Rivera Says He’s “Pondering Running” for the Senate in Ohio Replacing Retiring Rob Portman

0

Fox News broadcaster Geraldo Rivera is thinking of a new career.

He Tweeted today that he’s thinking of running for the US Senate from Ohio, taking the place of retiring Rob Portman.

Geraldo would run as a Republican, which would be funny since he was always aligned with liberal causes prior to meeting Roger Ailes.

Rivera has been living in Ohio with his 5th wife, Erica Levy, and their daughter. They married in 2003. He’s 77, she’s 46. He’ll turn 78 in July.

“Jeopardy!” Guest Host Katie Couric Says She’s Delivered Memoir to Publisher: “I hope you f-ing like it”

Katie Couric has turned in her memoir to publisher Little Brown. She announced the moment on Twitter in the video below. She says it’s very “emotional” and adds “I hope you fucking like it.”

Couric is current guest host of “Jeopardy!” and doing a great job, I think. It’s tough to be the first woman host, but Katie always blazes trails.

Her memoir, I hope, will really get into Matt Lauer, Tom Brokaw, her time at CBS hosting the Evening News, all of it. She better not leave anything out. Of course, there will be a lot about losing her sister and husband each to cancer. And starting the whole StandUp4Cancer charity and awareness of colon cancer.

If she just turned the book in, we’ll see it a year from now.
