Major League Baseball Moves the All Star Game from Atlanta, Will Movie Companies Follow Suit?

0

Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that the All Star Game will not be held in Atlanta this year because of the new anti-voting laws in Georgia.

Bravo to the MLB. Now will movie and TV companies do the same? Tyler Perry has a movie studio in Georgia. Disney/Marvel shoot a lot there, too. What’s happened in Georgia is criminal. Let’s see some liberal filmmakers take a stand!

Meanwhile, MLB, come to Yankee Stadium, please.

Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. issued the following statement in making the announcement:

“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and The Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views. I have decided that the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this year’s All-Star Game and MLB Draft.

“Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box. In 2020, MLB became the first professional sports league to join the non-partisan Civic Alliance to help build a future in which everyone participates in shaping the United States. We proudly used our platform to encourage baseball fans and communities throughout our country to perform their civic duty and actively participate in the voting process. Fair access to voting continues to have our game’s unwavering support.

“We will continue with our plans to celebrate the memory of Hank Aaron during this season’s All-Star festivities. In addition, MLB’s planned investments to support local communities in Atlanta as part of our All-Star Legacy Projects will move forward.  We are finalizing a new host city and details about these events will be announced shortly.”

Pop: Lil Nas X Takes the Week with “Montero,” Twerking with Satan, Sneakers with Drops of Blood

0

What a week for Lil Nas X. And we thought he was a one hit wonder with “Old Town Road.” He’s not.

Lil Nas’s second BIG hit is “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” finished the week at number 1. He beat Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” among other more mainstream projects.

In the complex, artful “Montero,” Lil Nas X twerks with Satan, offers gay themes, dances with the Devil, and religion gone wild. The video, which has had as many plays as the streaming audio– 20 million apiece– has the best graphics seen in a long time.

There’s even a piece in Time magazine explaining the symbolism!

At the same time that “Montero” took off, Lil Nas X caused a mini scandal by selling customized Nike sneakers containing a drop of blood. For people who couldn’t process this, the sneaker business became its own hot topic. Lil Nas X is smart, and knows how to play social media and PR. He got a huge amount of attention this week.

All told, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” had the total equivalent of 230,000 in sales. That came from 39.4 million in streams.

Will there be remixes? Somehow. An album? Inevitably.

The main thing is, Lil Nas X, flamboyant and thoughtful, is very smart, and he’s sticking around.

Justin Bieber Sold to the Koreans: Scooter Braun Sells Company to BTS Owners for $1 Billion

0

Justin Bieber has been sold to the Koreans.

Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, has sold his company, Ithaca Holdings, to the group that owns South Korean boy band BTS, HYBE.

“Global opportunities for artists become exponential with this partnership,”Braun said. “This is an opportunity for us to make history and further innovate the music industry.”

“The two companies will work closely together leveraging our proven track records of success, know-how, and expertise to create synergy, transcend borders and break down cultural barriers,” said HYBE chairman and CEO Bang Si-Hyuk.

HYBE now also owns Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Records, although Borchetta will continue to run it.

Braun’s artists besides Bieber include Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, and Tori Kelly.

The Carlyle Group, which invested in Ithaca Holdings four years ago, will sell off its minority stake as part of the deal.

HYBE was known until last October as Big Hit Entertainment. That’s when they went public.

Braun made the sale at the right time. The generation for his stars is coming to an end. Bieber’s sales are down, and there is no touring right now. When touring resumes, he’ll be able to package Bieber and Grande well beyond their record sales life, as well as combine them with BTS when their era cools off.

Bridgerton Sex Symbol Phenom Regé-Jean Page Not Returning for Second Season, Ditches Hit Show For Greener Pastures

0

Rege Jean Page, the sex symbol phenom who made “Bridgerton” fans swoon, is leaving the show. He’s not returning for Season 2. Eight episodes and he’s outta there.

Wow. The announcement came on Instagram. Page hosted “Saturday Night Live” and picked up a couple of roles, and probably thinks he’s David Caruso. This should be interesting. ShondaLand, the producer, must be furious.

Page was unknown before “Bridgerton” but gained overnight fame like crazy with the show. But this is what happens when newcomers get overwhelmed.

Page just worked four days on  “The Gray Man” in Long Beach, California, a movie quickly becoming known for its ballooning budget over $220 million.

The Instagram post from the show’s fictional Lady Whistledown gossip columnist reads:

“Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” the message began.

“We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family,” it continued. “Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer – more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear.”

UPDATE “Grey’s Anatomy” Hits New Low in Ratings, Drops by 300,000 Viewers as Meredith Wraps Up Beach Blanket Bingo

0

UPDATED: Final numbers were a little higher, 4.5 million. Still the lowest ever, and a disaster.

FRIDAY MORNING: “Grey’s Anatomy” went from critical to near flatline last night in the ratings.

The 17 season drama dropped to just over 4 million viewers, losing 800,000 fans from last week. It’s their lowest rating ever, and is a serious catastrophe.

The episode brought back two characters to join Meredith playing Beach Blanket Bingo. Mark Sloan and Lexi Grey got out their pails and shovels.

But it wasn’t enough to combat the return of Elliot Stabler on “Law and Order SVU,” where 7.6 million people came to see his big reunion.

What a mess “Grey’s” is in. Are they going off the air? Maybe, at this rate. They don’t seem invested in keeping it on, although I will say the constant non-interviews with showrunner Krista Vernoff have been fascinating. There isn’t a day that goes by without this EP blabbing away about nothing in all the Hollywood trades. She seems to be feathering her nest for a non “Grey’s” future.

Next week, below 4 million? Seems so. And then the show will be deader than all those characters on the beach.

Thursday TV Battles: Huge Numbers for “Law & Order” Stabler-Benson Crossover Reunion Crushes “Greys Anatomy”

0

The “Law & Order SVU” reunion cross over CRUSHED everything last night. The Stabler-Benson pairing, the new “Organized Crime” took out “Grey’s Anatomy” and everything on TV.

A whopping 7.5 million — twice the “SVU” regular audience– tuned in for the two hour special.

“Grey’s” did around 4.0 million as Meredith finally got off the beach and started breathing on her own. Ellen Pompeo may have signed a new contract!

“Grey’s” almost fell below 4 million, hitting an all time low and about to sink into a situation that suggests they are wrapping up. It’s been a disaster of a season.

Meanwhile “SVU” in the first hour did 7.6 million, followed by “OG” with 7.55. NBC and Dick Wolf got their big bang. They spent some money on the second hour, too, with Chazz Palminteri as the bad guy, and Dylan McDermott as his son. Meloni is going to have a Renaissance now, and “SVU” could make it to season 25. Nicely done!

Also for the first time in a few years, New York has two “L&O” shows shooting in the city. It’s great for actors, production, everyone. (As long as they don’t shoot in my neighborhood!)

Sinatra as a Character Name? And a Mobster? “Law & Order Organized Crime” Goes There for the First Time Ever

0

In all these years of mob films and TV shows, mobsters named in dramatic pieces and so on, there has never been one named Sinatra.*

Until tonight.

“Law & Order Organized Crime” featured a mob family named Sinatra. Father Manfredi, played by Chazz Palminteri, was killed off at the end of the first episode. His son, Richard, played by Dylan McDermott, takes the name Wheatley. He will be a regular character. But the name Sinatra remains.

Until tonight, the only Sinatras were the family of Frank, the most famous popular singer of all time. During Frank’s lifetime he battled the idea that he was mobbed up or had mob associates. Time was a factor in getting rid of that notion, right or wrong, leaving just Frank’s mellifluous voice and his occasional movie roles as his legacy.

But now it seems we’re going to get a weekly dose of the Sinatra crime family on “Organized Crime,” a show very unlike other “Law & Order” installments. So far, “Organized Crime” seems like it will be about Elliot Stabler seeking justice for the killing of his wife, Kathy. There’s very little law, or order. Or ensemble opportunities, unless the focus changes. This is Elliot Stabler’s show.

Getting rid of Kathy was essential. Elliot needed something to avenge, hence her murder. Also, the sexual chemistry between Chris Meloni and Marisa Hargitay is still there. Benson and Stabler are headed to something, probably during May sweeps. In the morning we’ll see how the ratings were. My guess is they were good.

As for Sinatra, there are other Sinatras out there in the world. But the name has the same resonance as Ketchup or Kleenex. This was an odd choice for the Dick Wolf crowd. We’ll see if Nancy or Tina, Frank’s daughters, have anything to say about it.

Tonight’s Stabler-Benson Reunion on “Law & Order SVU”: A Couple of Trivia Notes for the Fans

0

I don’t know how much fans already know about tonight’s Stabler-Benson reunion on “Law & Order SVU.”

But I did ask an insider with the show what they could tell me that wouldn’t be categorized as a spoiler.

For what it’s worth, here’s what I got:

Director Juan Campanella directed tonight’s show. He goes back to Season 1 in 2000 with Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni in the the first season, so they had a reunion, too. Campanella left the show in 2010 and didn’t return until this past fall.

The first time you’ll see Elliot Stabler in “SVU” tonight is a bar scene with Fin, aka Ice T.

In some of the previews, we’ve seen the detectives outside at night. I’m told that the roof top scene between Benson and Stabler was shot on what may have been the coldest night of the year, half a block from the Hudson River.

There’s no faking on “Law & Order.” New York is their stage set.

See you at 9pm.

Tonight “Law & Order SVU” Could Have Its Biggest Audience Ever with the Return of Elliot Stabler and Actor Christopher Meloni

0

“Law & Order SVU” returns tonight with its first show since February 25th– and a big big BIG twist. Elliot Stabler is back, too, after 12 years, in the person of Christopher Meloni.

“SVU” is on NBC at 9pm with the first part of a crossover to Meloni’s new “Organized Crime,” which airs at 10pm. Meloni’s co-stars include a marquee name– Dylan McDermott — plus Tamara Taylor and Danielle Moné Truitt.

The publicity for this anticipated reunion between Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson and Meloni’s Stabler is off the hook. “SVU” is in its 22nd season, Back when Meloni was a regular, the ratings were around 10 or 11 million. Last year the season average was a pretty healthy 6.5 million. This season the average has been a little under 4 million.

So Meloni’s appearance, and future crossover and guest spots back and forth on the two shows should give the ratings a much needed pop. After all, the idea is to get “SVU” to its 25th season somehow. Maybe next year we’ll see Paul Sorvino or Benjamin Bratt return to the “Law & Order” fold.

Of course, the big competition tonight is ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” where star Ellen Pompeo has been in coma all season, spending her time at the beach as Meredith. The “Grey’s” ratings have been in a steady decline, and the show could be wrapping up its 17 year run.

Charts: Justin Bieber Gets No “Justice” as New Album Displaced at Number 1 After 1 Week, Topped on Singles Chart Too

0

Justin Bieber’s peaches have turned sour.

His new Justice album debuted at number 1 last week. But tomorrow, when week 2 is counted up, “Justice” will fall to the second spot.

The new number  will be Rod Wave’s “Soulfly.” Who is Rod Wave? A nobody, but the Bieber album was a weak launch, the fans are fickle, Travis Bickle.

Bieber is also vanquished on the singles chart, where his “Peaches” — in which he’s a guest star and the least important part of a trio featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon — is going rotten at the hands of Lil Nas X. “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” is a phenom no one saw coming. Lil Nas X’s provocative, controversial salute to Twerking Satan, coupled with a hot video. will be at the top of the chart.

But “Peaches” has paid off for someone: the aforementioned Giveon, whose album has jumped to number 20 out of nowhere. It’s on Not So Fast Records, distributed by Sony’s Epic. Sylvia Rhone gets the win.

Numbers are thanks to hitsdailydouble and Buzz Angle.
