Kate Winslet’s “Mare of Easttown” Rocking, Jumps Another 25% in 3rd Week (Watch First Episode Free)

HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” is a runaway hit. The third episode on Sunday night jumped 25% from last week. The total linear number on HBO at 10pm was 918,000, up from 735,00 the week before and 600K on the premier episode.

HBO will claim double that with HBO Max, which we can’t confirm but I’ll bet it’s not far off the mark.

I have two more episodes in press account but I’m not watching them until the show plays in real time on Sunday night. It’s too enjoyable to bingewatch. Then there are two more episodes that no one’s seen.

In Ep. 3, Kate Winslet — who was excellent already — really sank in, so to speak. She inhabited Mare, vaping away under pressure, everyone in her life falling apart. Mare emerged as an even better detective, but then, at the end, there was a twist no one saw coming: Mare will break the law for her own purposes. That was wild. Now she’s on temporary leave from her job, stripped of her gun and badge.

Now we know something bad will happen. This is great story telling: make your hero vulnerable without their “super powers.”

The other big revelation of the night was seeing her detective buddy Colin Zabel (named for the show’s runner, Craig Zobel) get drunk and hit on her in the bar. Evan Peters has mostly lived in the Ryan Murphy world of “American Horror Story” series. As Zabel (I know a powerful lawyer with that name, which cracks me up), Peters came in as a lamb, an innocent shucks kind of guy and then showed a nasty side again, unexpected.

The whole cast is excellent. They’ve made Jean Smart look as bad as they can– the makeup!– and all the men seem predatory possible killers. The only one who doesn’t is good guy Richard, played by a star, Guy Pearce. You know he did it. Now Richard reveals a failed marriage and a son who doesn’t talk to him. Is the son the killer? Is Richard in town looking for him? It’s one of them, that’s for sure. (Maybe Zabel is the son.)

Like “The Undoing,” “Mare of Easttown” is a page turner for TV. The audience will keep growing week to week. The series sends on May 30th. But Mare could certainly go on to a second season of detective work. Kate Winslet is just off the charts good. She’s got all the awards lined up. Good for her! She already has proven herself over and over on the big screen.

After Nicole Kidman and now Kate have been such huge successes with HBO in this genre, I can’t wait to see who’s next in line.

Conan O’Brien Will End His 28 Year Talk Show Run on June 24th, “But He’s Not Retiring, Will Likely Go to HBO Max”

Conan O’Brien is wrapping his talk on TBS on June 24th. He’ll announce it tonight at 11pm when the show airs around the country.

Conan has had a spectacular run. His original “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” began on September 13, 1993 and ran until til 2009, when Jimmy Fallon took over. As we all know, Conan took over “The Tonight Show” until NBC screwed him and brought back Jay Leno, whom Conan had replaced.

You may recall the big TeamCoco campaign and the tour he went on that brought him to Radio City Music Hall. A Conan movement erupted nationally.

O’Brien moved to TBS shortly thereafter and has held court ever since. On June 24th, he’ll complete 28 years, the longest run ever for a night time talk show host.

And he’s only 58.

Sources tell me he will likely move operations to HBO Max. Weekly? Monthly? No one knows yet.

When I met Conan in the late 80s, he was a writer at “Saturday Night Live.” From there he went to “The Simpsons.” The rest is history including his famous obsession with Adam West, TV’s “Batman.”

Conan isn’t going away, so don’t worry. He’ll be with us — I hope — for a long time.

 

Exclusive: Golden Globes, Under Fire, Propose Sweeping Changes Including Letting Members Live Anywhere in the US, Must Approve on Thursday

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is at a real crossroads, a watershed moment that could end the group’s 73 year run if it’s not handled properly.

They will meet in groups of 2o over the next two days to discuss a proposal drawn by them with the law firm Ropes & Gray. This is the result of accusations of racism and exclusion, of being a private group for far too long with no regulation.

The main points will be an outreach immediately to bring in 20 journalists with an emphasis on finding black writers but being inclusive to people of all colors and races.

Most importantly: HFPA members will no longer have to live in Southern California. They can live anywhere in the United States as long as they can prove they represent foreign publications and can show their clips.

That second point is huge. It will widen the group’s search immensely.

Two hundred publicists as well as journalists and stars and producers have chimed in over the last several weeks about the way the HFPA has treated them over the decades. Not every member of the HFPA is a bad egg. But enough of the old guard has stood in the way of change for too long.

The older members don’t like criticism. The LA Times reports about internal HFPA memos citing their coverage. I wrote stories about the HFPA for years when no one else did or would, and faced the umbrage of a few who were trying to hold on to old ways.

In the last few weeks 88 year old member Phil Berk was finally expunged from the group after mocking Black Lives Matter. I’m told exclusively another older member, Judy Solomon, has quietly retired. The HFPA needs to do more if they’re going to survive. A group vote by Zoom on Thursdays will determine their future.

NBC and Dick Clark Productions are monitoring the situation closely. Sources tell me so far “the members are excited” by the proposal, and it should pass without trouble.

The letter to the 90 members who will vote concludes: “We feel positive about these changes. We believe they will lead us on the path to a brighter future for the association.”

The proposal includes Five Foundational Pillars of Change

They are

Accountability: Fundamental, structural changes to the organization as well as enhancing financial and ethical accountability.

Membership: Revision of membership eligibility and reaccreditation criteria, including substantial increase in size of membership, and removing impediments to diversity.

Inclusion: Increasing racial diversity in membership and at the Board level.

Good Governance: Substantial Board, management, and committee reform.Ethics &

Transparency: High ethical and accountability standards, including a new code of conduct, confidential reporting for internal and external parties, and new grievance procedures with clearly defined consequences


  1. Accountability

The Board will take more serious measures, including but not limited to the Board resigning, if the membership does not timely approve and implement the below reforms. Immediately establish independent review committee to the Board (“Accountability Board” or “Oversight Board”) consisting of racially and ethnically diverse members who will advise the Board and oversee critical organizational reform. °Possible members of this committee to include: representatives from the industry, members of diverse journalistic organizations, and a DEI consultant. Hold new Board elections under new Bylaws no later than September 1, 2021. All current members will be required to meet the same standards as incoming members for reaccreditation of their membership.

2. Membership

Admit at least20 new members in 2021, with a specific focus on recruiting Black members and building an environment to allow for their success, and with a goal of increasing the membership by 50% over the next 18 months. We will continue to reassess further increases to the membership with a specific focus on recruiting Black members and members from other underrepresented groups in each class.

Revision of the membership eligibility criteria and admissions process. Eliminate the Southern California residency requirement and expand eligibility to any qualified journalist living in the U.S. who work for a foreign publication.

°Expand eligibility to journalists who are members of credible media organizations (not exclusively the MPA) and create a pipeline of racially diverse journalists. °Open membership to journalists who work in media beyond print.

°Eliminate the sponsorship requirement and authorize alternative methods for member induction, including by expanding the role of the credentials committee and include third parties on that committee from credible journalistic and other organizations focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. °Remove restrictions on the number of members admitted per year.

°Reconfirm that there are no limitations on the number of members from each territory.

°Develop objective criteria governing the admissions process and involve third parties in the decisionmaking process. °Publicize the modified admissions criteria on the HFPA website and at HFPA events.°Eliminate the distinction between New Members and Active Members so that New Members receive immediate rights and privileges.

3. Inclusion

Develop a comprehensive and longterm strategy for the recruitment of racially diverse journalists, which will include partnerships with credible journalistic and other organizations focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, journalism schools, and other industry professionals whereby aspiring and early career journalists are mentored by members of the Association with the goal of becoming members.

Immediately retain Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultant. Develop a comprehensive DEI strategy.

Mandate regular implicit bias and sexual harassment trainings for all members, the first of which DEI trainings was conducted on April 26, 2021. Enhance the HFPA’s philanthropic outreach, and focus its messaging on its website and social media accounts, including during the Golden Globes and in public statements, to enhance its existing focus on support of racially diverse and underrepresented communities.

4. Good Governance

Hire a professional management staff, including, but not limited to, a Chief Executive Officer, Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, and Chief Financial Officer, with the goal of having the Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer in place by September 1, 2021.

Expand the size of the Board, create an Executive Committee of the Board, and increase the Board’s governance authority and responsibility. Allow nonHFPA members to serve on the Board. Strengthen term limits for officers and directors; lengthen Board terms and introduce staggered terms. Emphasize the distinction between governance and management. Reform the committee structure.

5. Ethics & Transparency

Revise the code of conduct in the following ways:°Define prohibited behavior and add policies, procedures, and training around nondiscrimination, antiharassment, sexual misconduct, and professional conduct standards. °Include sections governing membership and conflicts. Tie violations of the code of conduct to the updated grievance procedure. Set forth clear disciplinary consequences for violating policies. Make the Code publicly available.

Create a new confidential reporting system and grievance procedure by doing the following: Immediately implement an accessible reporting mechanism for those inside and outside the HFPA, including an anonymous, thirdparty hotline, easily accessible through the HFPA website. Hotline will be open and available as soon as possible for the reporting of past, present, and future conduct violations. °A third party will commenceinvestigation of all hotline claims within 14 days of receipt. °Establish a clear process for determining appropriate sanctions.

Eliminate the Board and member vote required to impose sanctions on grievances and instead rely on the findings of independentinvestigations and clear predefined sanctions, including but not limited to suspension or expulsion. °Establish strong confidentiality protections and an antiretaliation policy.

List HFPA members on the HFPA website, along with their biographies, publications, affiliations, and links to previous works. Review press conference procedures, including consulting with publicists. Review structure of press travel.No longer accept promotional items.Strengthen conflict of interest disclosures

This really isn’t an item but Sean Lennon just called Stella McCartney “my sister” on social media, and I am really verklempt. I don’t really know Sean, I’ve talked to him, I’ve seen in my neighborhood. He always seemed like a sweet guy. Stella is one of those great people, just like her mother. A few years ago I was lucky enough to be at a Lincoln Center fundraiser concert and dinner with all the Beatles family and was impressed by close all the kids felt to each other. It was lovely. Dhani Harrison and Julian Lennon, for example, are real mensches. So it’s nice to see this after almost 60 years of the Beatles. All you need is love.

Billionaire couple Bill and Melinda Gates are throwing in the towel. This could be the biggest divorce ever, bigger than Bezos. Even all those billions and their Foundation couldn’t keeo them together. After 27 years and three kids, they are kaput.

Life Returns! Invite to First Screening in A Year Arrives for John Krasinski’s Scary “A Quiet Place Part 2”

Almost the last thing we did in the beforetimes was go to the premiere of John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place, Part 2.” John and wife Emily Blunt were there at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Everyone loved the movie. This was March 8, 2020. We thought “AQP2” was opening in April. It didn’t. And then it started moving around, like everything else.

Today came the first actual screening invite in 13 or 14 months. Paramount is showing “AQP2” to press in two weeks. Hallelujah! It’s been so long, I can barely recall what happened in it.

No, seriously, this was worth waiting. The second film in what is obviously a trilogy picks up right where the first one left off. Added to the mix is Cillian Murphy, who is excellent as another survivor of the alien invasion who’s keeping quiet with a low profile. The kids are just as good as in the first film– they may be adults by now!

Also featured is past Oscar nominee Djimon Honsou, who’s starting to work again after taking some time off.

Paramount will have a big hit with this sequel, and then we’ll wait for Krasinski to give us his big ending.

But it’s so nice to get an invite again! Like old times! It’s like we’ve been unfrozen!

NYC: As City Reopens, Council Delays Vote on DeBlasio’s Disastrous Soho, NoHo Re-zoning Plan

Good News? I hope so. I’m reprinting here Andrew Berman’s report from the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. This about Mayor DeBlasio’s disastrous proposal to unleash real estate developers on Soho and NoHo. He must be stopped. He’s already done so much to wreck the city. And he doesn’t care about Manhattan at all. For example, a tent city of homeless is now set up at Sixth Avenue and 8th St in front of what was Liquiteria (formerly Grays Papaya). On Sixth Avenue between 8th St and Waverly Place on both sides of the avenue stores are for rent like it’s the Great Depression. We have no supermarket in the neighborhood. Businesses can’t survive because of the greedy landlords. This has all happened under DeBlasio, and it’s citywide. (PS Andrew Yang will not solve these problems. Forget about that.)

Berman writes:

“This afternoon, without explanation or comment, the City postponed its vote to certify the Mayor’s proposed SoHo/NoHo (and Chinatown) rezoning, with no new date given. The City had failed to provide required materials about the plan. The plan has to be certified to proceed, and there are only a limited number of scheduled meetings during which this can be done with enough time for it to be voted upon before the end of the year, when the Mayor and much of the current City Council leave office. We will let you know if and when a new date has been scheduled for a certification vote.

“In other positive news, this morning two of the city’s oldest, largest, and most respected tenant and housing advocacy groups came out strongly against the Mayor’s rezoning plan with an op-ed in the Daily Newsread it here. The piece cites and references our study showing how the Mayor’s plan would destroy affordable housing and make housing in these neighborhoods more expensive and the population less socio-economically and racially diverse, and supports our Community Alternative Plan. The piece directly calls upon Council members Chin and Rivera and Borough President Brewer to oppose the plan.

“In recent weeks, opposition to the Mayor’s plan has grown, including from Chinatown/social justice groups, former members of the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, the venerable Municipal Art Society (which lobbied for the city’s first zoning laws), and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Preservation League of New York State.

“Finally, residents of SoHo and NoHo including our friends at the SoHo Alliance and Broadway Residents Committee have filed a lawsuit against the plan — read more here.

“We can’t take anything for granted, and have to keep our momentum going. The coming weeks will be critical in determining if this hyper-development plan, which would destroy these neighborhoods and push out long-time businesses and residents, will be approved and serve as a model for further rezonings throughout our city.”

“Sex and the City” Reboot Will Add Black Characters: Jennifer Hudson Could Return from Original Film as “Louise”

Word today that the “Sex and the City” reboot will add three Black female characters.

Maybe they’ve forgotten– I doubt it– but there was a major Black character in the first movie. Jennifer Hudson, hot off her Oscar win for “Dreamgirls,” played Louise, their new buddy.

Louise just faded away but of course JHud went on to become a superstar. In August we will finally see her as Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” which could result in a new Oscar nomination. JHud is plenty busy.

But wouldn’t it make sense for this limited run reboot for Louise to come back, singing? Since 2008, JHud has openly worked on having the best figure in town, and that won’t hurt. She’s more than ever all about fashion — besides singing and dancing.

And Louise keeps the show PG since we’re not going to see JHud naked or hear her cursing like a sailor!

In the 2008 movie, Louise was hired as Carrie’s assistant to help her manage her life. At the end she returned to St. Louis. But a great storyline would be Louise having made it as a singer and return to New York a star!

Cross fingers this happens.

“American Idol” Will Try To Bolster Ratings By Forcing Contestants to Sing Coldplay Songs Next Week

“American Idol” has found a new way to torture contestants: make them sing Coldplay songs.

Next Sunday, Coldplay’s Chris Martin will mentor the seven finalists, who will then each have to sing one of the band’s songs.

Coldplay’s hits, “Viva La Vida” and “Clocks,” are basically designed for the band and not for others to attempt. They’re fun but kind of droney, with strange lyrics. Also, “Viva La Vida” was the subject of a major plagiarism scandal.

Last night’s “Idol” scored 5.2 million viewers, a little down from two weeks ago but way up from last Sunday when the audience watched the Oscars.

On last night’s show the audience voted out three of the contestants including Alyssa, who I thought had potential to win. Instead, they allowed in some clunkers. We’ll see how this all shakes out. Alyssa is far better than Grace, who made the cut. Maybe one day she’ll be a big star and be a judge on “The Voice.”

 

Disney-Marvel Drops a Black Panther Clue About Michael B. Jordan in New Sizzle Reel: “That man next to you, he’s your brother”

Disney-Marvel announced a schedule of new movies today but the most important one is “Black Panther 2.”

It is now known as “Wakanda Forever” but will not open with Vice President Kamala Harris emerging from a Cincinnati coffee shop sipping a Wakanda Forever blend — although that would be a great scene.

Did they drop a clue about “Wakanda Forever” in the sizzle reel below? At :43 the narration over TChalla and Erik Killmonger says “That man next to you, he’s your brother.” Hold on! Are the two foes brothers in some way? Will Killmonger be revived from death?

Ryan Coogler’s sequel to his billion dollar franchise will come on July 8, 2022, which isn’t too far from now. So we can assume Coogler and co. have a script and know how they will address the death of Chadwick Boseman aka T’Challa aka the Black Panther.

Since the Black Panther can only be blood related, fans are guessing that Shuri, his sister, played by Letitia Wright, will assume the mantle.

But it’s likely that Michael B. Jordan will somehow be repurposed into the screenplay as the hero even after his Erik Killmonger was killed in the first movie. Jordan is now too big a star and too identified with “Black Panther” not to be in the movie. Killmonger will somehow rise from his ashes in the sea. My guess is he’ll marry Shuri, surely. And don’t call me Shirley!

Jordan said in an interview last week that he’s “unlikely” to be in “Wakanda Forever” but wouldn’t rule it out. “Never say never,” he said. He didn’t want to be attached to an out and out lie, obviously. The actor’s next big job is directing “Creed III,” but that seems like it would film after “Wakanda Forever,” which would have to be made this summer and fall in order to make July 8, 2022.

But what if that is a clue in the sizzle reel? Jordan is somehow playing T’Challa’s brother? Then he might be the new Black Panther.

All the rest of the “BP” cast will be back, as well, including Angela Bassett, Danira Gurai, Winston Duke, and new Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya.

It’s amazing to think that Jordan’s career trajectory has just soared and soared. He was on “All My Children” in 2003, “Friday Night Lights” in 2009, and then starred in Coogler’s sensational and moving “Fruitvale Station” in 2013. The director and star formed a bond that lead to “BP” and superstardom. A thrilling story!
