Cannes Exclusive: Scorsese In, Indiana Jones, Almodovar, Depp, Nolan Oppenheimer, All Point to Blow Out Festival This Spring

0

Cannes do!

The next Cannes Film Festival, set for mid- May on the Cote d’Azur, will be fairly sensational from what I hear.

Sources tell me that Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” — long or short, whatever length it is– is in, definitely. It won’t be the opening film and probably not in competition, but Cannes impresario Thierry Fremaux will have Scorsese, De Niro, and DiCaprio on his his red carpet at the Palais du Festivals!

The opening night film will be very special. Pedro Almodovar’s short, “A Strange Way of Life,” will be the premiere, with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal in the famed Spanish director’s first movie with English spoken. A short film — 40 minutes? — is unusual and not easy for theaters to program without a companion piece. But for Cannes opening night, it’s perfect!

I’m told other titles headed for Cannes 2023 include possibly Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” James Mangold’s “Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny,” and Johnny Depp in “Jeanne du Barry.” The latter is said to be set for the night after Almodovar.

Sacre bleu! Stay tuned. All those stars in one place. Cannes is back, baby!

With the Oscars coming into view, and the end of the 2023 awards season, we turn out attention to the next round of movies.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” is at the top of all lists for this year’s new crop. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, “Flower Moon” is set in the West in the 1920s, and it’s based on the book by David Grann. The story concerns the real life murders of Native Americans in Oklahoma when their land is discovered to be sitting on oil fields.

I’m told that the Cannes Film Festival is chomping at the bit to premiere the film, not in competition and not for opening night. It would be just the prestige of that trio walking the red carpet.

So what’s the issue? I’m told by sources that “Flower Moon” is currently clocking in at three hours, twenty minutes. This is nothing new for Scorsese, whose every new film starts at super sized until Oscar winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker summons a succinct two and a half hour final cut out of Scorsese’s masterful shots. But Cannes can’t program such a long film, so they’re waiting to see how this all works out.

So is Apple. They wrote the check for all this. And they’ve got to promise Cannes the film will have a real theatrical run before streaming, and in every country, especially France. Stay tuned…

German Language “All Quiet” Wins British Academy Award, Plus Austin Butler, Cate Blanchett, “Banshees” Actors

0

All is no longer quiet on the Western front.

Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” won Best Picture today at the BAFTA Awards. Berger won best director, and the film won in cinematography as well. All of a sudden the Netflix gfilm, a masterpiece, could win a lot of Oscars.

Best Actor and Actress went to Austin Butler for “Elvis” and Cate Blanchett for “Tar.” Two actors from “The Banshees of Inisherin” won Supporting awards– Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

The show itself, seen in America on BritBox, was eye opening. No one will ever complain about the Oscars again after seeing how primitively the BAFTAs are produced. We got it on some kind of time delay that made no sense as people there in London Tweeted winners we couldn’t see. Very weird.

Box Office: New “Ant Man” Can’t, Man: Marvel Movie Opens with $104 Mil But This May Be Its One Big Weekend

0

The weekend’s big office bonanza is Marvel’s “Ant Man and the WASP: Quantumania.”

Rejected soundly by critics, “Ant Man 3” made $104 million from Thursday through Sunday. Tomorrow is a holiday so there will be a four day weekend announcement, too.

But over the weekend, from Friday through today, “Quantumania” took quantum leaps downward. Each day marked a 27% decrease. Word of mouth cannot be so great, and return visits not as plentiful as for past Marvel blockbusters. This could be the one and only “Ant Man” weekend. Enjoy it while you can!

RIP Actor and Comedian Richard Belzer, Munch of “SVU” and “Homicide,” Famous for Dry Sense of Humor

0

Det John Munch, RIP.

Actor Richard Belzer, who started out as a comedian but became a highly praised dramatic actor on TV, has died at age 78. He’d been living in the South of France for quite some time.

Belzer was beloved as Detective John Munch, first on “Homicide Life on the Streets” and then “Law & Order SVU.” He played the role for 22 years in total. Munch appeared on the original “Law & Order” and “Trial by Jury,” as well. Belzer played him on a total of 11 different TV series and six prime time shows, setting records for popularity and appearances.

Laraine Newman, original player on “SNL,” broke the news of his death on Twitter. She wrote: “I’m so sad to hear of Richard Belzer’s passing. I loved this guy so much. He was one of my first friends when I got to New York to do SNL. We used to go out to dinner every week at Sheepshead Bay for lobster. One of the funniest people ever. A master at crowd work. RIP dearest.”

I knew Richard, he was from Bridgeport, Connecticut. Acerbic and charming, he was famous for going everywhere with his little dog. If he came to Michael’s restaurant or Elaine’s, the the little pup would get a spread out blanket and a bowl of water beneath the table.

Belzer had a pretty awful family life as a kid. Somewhere along the way he became great friends with Jerry Lewis. This was often a topic of discussion for us. Many years ago, Lewis was toasted at the original Friars Club (not the current deteriorated version) in an emotional evening. Belzer was heard calling Lewis “Dad” throughout the evening. It was very touching, and Lewis was grateful for his devotion.

According to my sources, “SVU” often asked Belzer to fly in from France to do cameos, but he was frail and could never make it. His last appearance on “SVU” was in 2016, as seen below. This past Thursday, Munch was mentioned on “SVU” by actor Ice T as Fin, his old partner. I wrote about it on Friday. Fin said Munch had gone back to living in Baltimore, the home of “Homicide,” had opened a bar and was happily married. The producers must have known Belzer was ill, and gave him a fitting goodbye tribute.

Richard Belzer will be much missed.

Directors of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” Win the DGA Award, Set Sights on Oscars

0

The Directors Guild has spoken.

Winner of the 2023 DGA Award for Feature Films are Daniel Scheinert and Danuel Kwan, aka “The Daniels,” for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

This traditionally points to the Oscar at least for Best Direction, if not Best Picture. The Academy voters may split their votes and give the Daniels the directing award and another film Best Picture. But this dye was cast a long time ago.

Other DGA awards went to Bill Hader for “Barry” and Sam Levinson for “Euphoria” — meaning an HBO sweep for TV. Charlotte Wells won for first time feature for “Aftersun.” TV Awards went to the Tony Awards, and “Saturday Night Live.”

Best documentary directing went to “Fire of Love” from National Geographic.

Do I agree with the big award? Well, “EEAAO” is fresh and unusual, full of vibrant images and ideas. Did it move me like “The Fabelmans” did? Or “Tar”? No. I think a lot of Academy voters are confused by it. But you can’t deny its originality and exuberance.

Box Office: “Ant Man” Heads to $100 Mil Weekend, “Magic Mike” Doubles Theaters and Falls 60%

0

Last night came the “Ant Man” and the unvaccinated WASP. After hitting $17.5 mil in Thursday previews, the latest Marvel adventure took in another $28 million. Total $46 million. Add another $56 mil and we’re up over $100 million.

Good stuff, even if reviews are pretty negative. But people need entertainment. And theaters need customers.

On the perplexing side, why did Warner Bros. add twice as many theaters to “Magic Mike”? WB usually has great instincts about supply and demand but they really blew it on this one. “Magic Mike” doubled its theaters and fell 60% from last Friday. How crazy is that? They won’t even get near $20 million total for the two week run by Sunday.

Good news, though: “80 for Brady” will hit $30 million tonight. Another completed pass!

Justice Served: “People’s Court” and Judge Mathis Show Cancelled By Warner Bros. After Two Decades Plus

0

The jury has returned a verdict: Warner Discovery is cancelling its two syndicated court shows.

I’ve confirmed that “The People’s Court” with Judge Marilyn Milian, and “Judge Mathis” with Judge Greg Mathis, have been convicted of being on the air too long. They will wrap this spring after a respective 26 and 24 seasons.

“The People’s Court,” of course, had its first famous run in the 1980s with Judge Joseph Wapner presiding. The show gained infamy when it was included in the plot of Barry Levinson’s award winning movie, “Rain Man.”

This version began in 1997 as a reboot with former New York Mayor Ed Koch in the black robes. But in 2001, Milian came in and has been making rulings ever since. For all those years, dating back to Wapner, TMZ’s Harvey Levin has been lurking in the hallways and interviewing the litigants. Now he’ll be reduced to just stalking ambulances around Los Angeles.

The two shows average 800,000 and 600,000 viewers a day, which in the talk show world is acceptable. They can’t be too expensive to produce since the participants are real people. But the cost cutting throughout Warner Discovery just goes on and on. Warner’s was a powerhouse with “Ellen” for years until she left the game last year. Now they remain with Jennifer Hudson’s refreshing talk show, renewed for a second season.

Daytime syndication is changing fast. “Dr. Phil” is leaving the biz also this spring. “Live with Kelly and Ryan” is betting everything on replacing Ryan Seacrest with Mark Consuelos. Drew Barrymore teeters on the edge. And it’s not easy to find new shows that click. Is Warner’s getting out of court shows completely? We’ll see. Meanwhile, reruns of “Judge Judy” and new shows of Judy’s “Hot Bench” continue to bring in the big audiences.

Priscilla Presley’s Period of Mourning is Over: Promoting Skincare Line on Twitter 1 Month After Lisa Marie’s Death

0

Of course, everyone grieves in their own way.

Lisa Marie Presley died on January 13th. Today is February 17th. It’s basically a month since Priscilla Presley lost her only daughter. She celebrated tonight by posting a plug on Twitter for her new skincare line, Cilla. Too early? Yeah, I think so.

Yes, Priscilla is said to be fighting her own granddaughter, Riley Keough, over Lisa Marie’s estate and custody of her twin girls. If Priscilla loses control of Graceland to Riley she will be sunk financially. So I iguess she has to promote the skincare line in cause she wrests her daughter’s legacy from her own flesh and blood.

Sound like a soap opera? Just call it “Memphis.”

“Ant Man” Mystery: How Anti-Vaxxer Evangeline Lilly Overcame Disney Mandate All Actors Must Be Inoculated

0

“Ant Man and WASP: Quantumania” opens tonight, it’s the third “Ant Man” movie.

Regardless of the actual plot, the bigger mystery is how actress Evangeline Lilly, who plays the WASP, managed to circumvent Disney protocol about the pandemic.

Lilly is a vocal anti-vaxxer, as well as anti-social distancing or any other edict of the CDC. In January 2022 she posted to her 2.4 million Instagram followers:

I was in DC this weekend to support bodily sovereignty while Canadian truckers were rallying for their cross-country, peaceful convoy in support of the same thing.

I believe nobody should ever be forced to inject their body with anything, against their will, under threat of:
-violent attack
-arrest or detention without trial
-loss of employment
-homelessness
-starvation
-loss of education
-alienation from loved ones
-excommunication from society
…under any threat whatsoever.

This is not the way. This is not safe. This is not healthy. This is not love. I understand the world is in fear, but I don’t believe that answering fear with force will fix our problems.

I was pro choice before COVID and I am still pro choice today.

Marvel, the studio that makes “Ant Man” movies, is owned by Disney. Disney issued a strict vaccination rule for all employees two years ago. They were so adamant about it that two actors on ABC’s “General Hospital” were essentially fired in late fall 2021 for refusing to get the shots. Disney pulled back on vax restrictions a year later. But by then, “Quantumania” had been filmed. (Shooting went on for most of 2021.)

I’ve reached out to Disney PR to ask how Lilly got away with not having the vaccination. When they answer, I’ll update this piece.

Lilly — who also promoted anti-vax videos and livestreams–  tells Esquire she expected backlash from her anti-vaxx stance. She tells the magazine: “I know the beast that I’m attacking,” she recalls thinking then. “I know that I have a little pebble and there’s this fucking Goliath giant. If I shoot this pebble, it’s going to wake the giant.” Though she says she asked herself “about six hundred times” whether she should post, she ultimately decided to wake the giant. “I just wanted people out there who were struggling because they were under severe pressure to do something they didn’t want to do to know that they weren’t alone, to know that there were people who actually felt they had a right to say no,” says Lilly.
