Broadway: Carey Mulligan, Bill Nighy Bringing “Skylight” in Long Enough to Get Tony Awards

0

I believe I told you a few weeks ago that David Hare’s hit production of “Skylight” would come from London to get some Tony Awards. Scott Rudin is bringing Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy over in the Stephen Daldry-directed revival just long to get some Tonys and sell out a few weeks.

People are going to be scrambling to see “Skylight” because it’s really great and all the accolades are really deserved. Previews begin April 2nd, and the runs ends June 14th, days after the Tonys. Maybe it can be extended, but this is what Tony season is now, in and out. No more lingering about…

ALSO Larry David’s “Fish in the Dark” starts on Broadway in February, with Anna D. Shapiro directing Larry. I told you some months ago that Larry was coming in with a play.  The cast includes Jayne Houdyshell, Rosie Perez, Jonny Orsini, Jake Cannavale , and Jerry Adler (“The Sopranos”).

What no one else told you: Jake Cannavale is the 19 year old son of Bobby Cannavale and Jenny Lumet. He’s also the grandson of Sidney Lumet. His great grandmother was Lena Horne. Got that? It’s in his freakin’ blood.

Official: Tarantino “Hateful Eight” is a Go for Weinstein Company

0

After much sturm und drang, even a lawsuit and an exclusive from me in May–not to mention a staged reading– Quentin Tarantino’s “Hateful Eight” is a go for the Weinstein Company. We will see it in time for the 2016 Oscars. Everyone from the Tarantino ensemble company is in it except for Christoph Waltz, who is taking an (amicable) break after winning two Oscars. He’ll be back in the future. Tarantino and Weinstein go together like whiskey and bar stools. What fun! Can’t wait!

Here’s the press release:
The distribution of this post-Civil War western will be a major event for
theaters and something that only Quentin Tarantino could dream up. THE HATEFUL
EIGHT will be shot on 65mm film and have the widest 70mm film release in over
twenty years. This unique distribution plan will also feature 35mm and DCP
formats following the initial and exclusive 70mm release. Principal photography
will begin in January with a domestic release slated for the fall of 2015.
Richard Gladstein, Stacey Sher and Shannon McIntosh will produce the film and
the executive producers are Bob and Harvey Weinstein along with G. Mac Brown.
THE HATEFUL EIGHT marks a continuation of the long-standing relationship between
the celebrated filmmaker and the Weinsteins, who have collaborated on all of
Tarantino’s films, from RESERVOIR DOGS through DJANGO UNCHAINED.

Commented Bob and Harvey Weinstein, TWC Co-Chairmen: “We are incredibly excited
to begin production on THE HATEFUL EIGHT, as we know this picture will be as
innovative, brash and of course fun as all Quentin projects prior. There is,
quite simply, no other filmmaker like him, and we are as proud as ever to
continue this partnership that started over twenty years ago.”

Exclusive: Movie About Iconic Female Comic Phyllis Diller is Planned

0

What an irony! Just as Joan Rivers fights for her life, a movie about her sort of mentor is being planned.

A film about Phyllis Diller, the iconic and ground breaking female comic, is being planned. Producers Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield of the Movie Package Company are producing, also with manager Heidi Rothbart and Alan Gasmer. Playwright Jonathan Tolin and Seth Bass are writing the script. No director has been announced.

Diller died at age 95 in the summer of 2012. She was quite a legend, and easily recognized as Rivers’ if not mentor, the trailblazer who made Joan possible. Rivers would pick up the ball and run with it, herself becoming the reason so many female comics soon blossomed.

Right now, a casting call has gone out for an actress to play Diller from around age 35-60. The film concerns her heyday years from the mid 1950s to the 1970s. This was when Diller was a staple on every single TV variety show, regular with Bob Hope and Ed Sullivan, with her wild wigs and caftans.

If it’s done right, and not kitschy, the movie could be a real awards-buzzer for some actress. The producers are looking for a star to play Phyllis but what they really need is a very solid director. Penny Marshall, you should come out of retirement for this.

Adele Withdrawal Causes 2 Unreleased “21” Tracks to Surface on the Web

0

It’s an illness called Adele withdrawal. And so to slake that thirst, Sony has unofficially released two unknown tracks from Adele’s “21” album. Originally they were pulled off the internet on Tuesday morning. But they’re back, and I guess Sony’s attitude is, why not? The wait for a new Adele album is excruciating. It’s also one of those dilemmas– how to follow up such a monster hit like “21”? Nothing will measure up. Really, she should just put an album covering other people’s songs, and get it over with. But here they are, in the meantime:

Brangelina Update: Millions from Wedding Pix Go to Charity, Photog Says He Worked for Free

0

David James, the famed photographer who took Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s wedding photos, tells me he did the job for free. James called me this afternoon from the set of “Star Wars 7,” where he’s the stills photographer. James doesn’t usually shoot weddings. But he knew Brad and Angelina from “Unbroken,” Jolie’s coming film with a lot of Oscar buzz.

How much notice did he have? “About two weeks,” he told me. And he really worked at the wedding. Even though there were only 22 guests, James and his staff stayed busy the whole time. “We were treated very well,” he assured me, but he was not a guest. He didn’t talk to the guests and didn’t know who they were really. But he did work for free, knowing the money for the pictures would go to charity.

To that end, this afternoon Brad and Angie announced all the money from the sale of the pix– upwards of $10 mil– will go to their Jolie Pitt Foundation. As I predicted. They are very good at distributing funds to charitable orgs. It’s a win win.

Joan Rivers: Daughter Melissa Says “She Remains on Life Support”

0

Joan Rivers‘ daughter Melissa has issued a statement this afternoon. “At this time she does remain on life support. I know my mother would be overwhelmed by the continued outpouring of kindness and I want to thank everyone for keeping us in their prayers.”

She added: “On behalf of my mother and our family, we are extremely grateful for all the love and support we’re received.”
Pictures in the NY Daily News suggest that things didn’t go well when they tried to remove the machines that are helping Joan breathe. Her assistant, Graham, is shown looking unencouraged.
Still, it’s a watch and wait period.

In the meantime, watch this classic video of Joan and Lucille Ball on the Tonight Show:

Tom Cruise Edge of Tomorrow Finally Crosses $100Mil–His 1st Since 2005

1

At last! It does seem like Doug Liman’s “Edge of Tomorrow” stumbled over the $100 mil mark domestically sometime over the weekend. This is Tom Cruise’s first non “Mission Impossible” $100 mil movie in nine years. To get there, Warner Bros. was persistent– “Edge” was just in 89 theaters this week, most of them in places no one’s ever heard of.

But it doesn’t matter. All anyone will see when the ink is dry is that Tom hit $100 million after a long, very dry spell.

Now the video comes in October with a different name emblazoned on it– “Live Free or Die” or something like that. Whatever. Maybe now the video box will feature “Edge of Tomorrow” more prominently.

“Edge” is a smart, well made movie. and not the usual Cruise-is-here-to-save-the-world stuff.

Tennis Champ John McEnroe Gets Waterboarded for Real in Anti-Torture Music Video (Watch)

0

Here’s a new video in which tennis ace John McEnroe gets waterboarded– for real. It’s supposed to show how awful torture is. It’s, uh, torture.

“It’s a pretty powerful clip,” says McEnroe in a press release. “A friend involved with the project asked if I wanted to participate, saying he was making a video about living in a police state where people are punished for the smallest of infractions – sort of a ‘this could happen to you’ scenario. It seemed like a sci-fi concept at the time, but given everything that’s been happening around us lately, this video could easily be mistaken for an evening newscast. As for what it was like to shoot my scenes, let’s just say it was an experience I’ll never forget. I read about waterboarding and all the debates, and let me tell you from firsthand experience, it’s a brutal and terrifying form of torture. No one—American or otherwise—should ever have to endure that.”

The music is by a group called Future User.

Brangelina Used “Star Wars,” “Mission Impossible” Stunt Photog for ($10Mil or More) Wedding Pix

0

When Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got married last week, they used an unusual photographer to shoot the event. They didn’t go to Annie Leibovitz, for example, or Mario Testino or Mark Seliger any of the other photogs who’ve shot them for magazine covers or ads.

Instead, the man behind the lens was Brit David James, the famed still photographer who is currently working on “Star Wars 7” for J.J. Abrams. James is famous for shooting many big films including “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”

Brad and Angelina knew him already. James did the stills for Angelina’s upcoming film “Unbroken.” It’s unknown whether he did the job for free. But the credit reads David James/GettyImages. And the pictures were sold to People magazine and Hello! in Britain for upwards of $10 million. The money, I’m assuming, goes to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation for distribution to worthy causes.

In 2008, People and Hello! paid a record $14 million for exclusive of Brad and Angelina with newborn twins Vivienne and Knox. But we’ve had a recession since then. And Time Inc. was spun off as its own company– no Time Warner deep pockets to help them now.

Ashlee Simpson: Why Sell Wedding Photos? She’s Married an Heir to a Fortune

0

Let’s gossip a little this morning. The New York Daily News is very upset that Ashlee Simpson, sister of Jessica, couldn’t sell her wedding photos to Evan Ross. Pish, posh. In this case, no one has to sell anything. Ashlee, you see, has hit the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Evan Ross is commonly described as the son of Supremes singer Diana Ross. But listen, Evan’s dad was Arne Naess, Jr. Arne died in 2004 in a rock climbing accident. But he was already worth at least $100 million. He was the heir to a huge Norwegian shipping fortune. When he divorced Diana in 1999, after 14 years of marriage and two sons, he settled $25 million to her plus support.

It’s not like Diana’s any slouch either. She made good money as a Supreme and continues to tour as a top tier star performer. But Diana didn’t write her own songs, so she doesn’t get publishing royalties. And most of her big hits came before 1972, so she’s currently getting screwed by Spotify, Pandora, and all the digital downloading services.

In other words: Diana’s marriage to Arne Naess Jr. in the mid 1980s was a huge windfall for her. She already had three daughters. But in her mid 40s, Diana gave the billionaire heir two sons. (The other is Ross Naess. Evan took Diana’s name as a performer.) The sons don’t have to work a day in their lives. Trust me. If Ashlee Simpson can make this marriage, her second before age 30, work, she’s in good shape.

A pre-nup? I’d say that Diana Ross won’t have Evan singing “You Keep Me Hanging On” if the marriage doesn’t work out.

And Arne Naess? He had seven children in all, including European pop singer Leona Naess. Arne Naess Jr. died in 2004, a year after his father, Erling Naess. Erling’s brother, Arne (referred to as Arne Sr.) lived until 2009 and was a famous Norwegian philosopher and environmentalist. But it was Erling, Arne’s father, who built the shipping fortune under the company Anglo-Norness. The company was sold in 1973 for $208 million, or roughly $1 billion in today’s currency.

And Diana? She lives in the toniest neighborhood in ritzy Greenwich. Connecticut. Her 12,500 square foot estate is on five acres, with four acres of adjacent waterfront property. She tried to sell the place in 2007 for $39 million but couldn’t. Since the recession, the property is valued at $14.5 million. Diana had her tax billion lowered in 2010.

Presumably, the mansion is filled with gold. Records, that is.

As for Ashlee, long since passed are the “SNL” lip synching scandal and the nose job. She and sister Jessica have really turned lemons (or tuna, as in Chicken of the Sea) into lemonade.
