Joni Mitchell Stunning Surprise Appearance Lights Up Clive Davis All Star Pre-Grammy 50th Anniversary Show

0

Clive Davis knows how to throw an incendiary 50th anniversary version of his pre-Grammy party.

Performers last night included most of the top 10, showing that Clive still has finger in the pulse of the next generation. Post Malone Shaboozey, Teddy Swims, Benson Boone, Samara Joy, and Doechii rocked the Beverly Hilton ballroom with dynamic performances that rocked the A List audience.

Other performers included the sizzling Black Crowes, Michael Buble, and Yolanda Adams, all of whom knocked it out the park, so to speak, for the Triple A List audience.

But the show stopper was an unexpected Joni Mitchell, whose appearances are rare enough. Joni, a long time fan of the Clive Davis dinner, has never taken the stage herself. She did last night, to a thunderous welcome. Sitting in what I call her Solomon Burke throne, Mitchell delivered a mesmerizing version of her signature hit, “Both Sides Now,” that beat even the one she did on Thursday night at Fire Aid.

Joni must have been shocked by the intense, emotional response from the audience because she was only supposed to sing one song. Bolstered by waves of love, she then launched into a rendition of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess” that rivaled even my favorite version by Billy Stewart — or any of the many great singers who’ve recorded this song. It was sublime, a landmark moment in Clive’s 50 years of showcasing artists.

The very appreciative audience included forever Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, plus Barry Manilow — the instigator of this whole party 50 years ago, Motown legends Berry Gordy, the legendary Gladys Knight, and Suzanne DePasse, Frankie Valli, Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, Jennifer Lopez (with manager Benny Medina), Gayle King, Jimmy Kimmel — who functioned as a hilarious co-emcee to Clive, Kenny Babyface Edmonds, Diane Warren, Peter Asher, Ray Parker Jr., Taylor Dane, Sheila E., Jeff Zucker, Paul Shaffer, famed actress Michele Lee, “Laugh In” creator George Schlatter, hit songwriter (“Murder on the Dance Floor”) and New Radicals creator Gregg Alexander, KISS’s Paul Stanley, Ari Melber, Don Lemon, Bill Maher, Kenny G, famed drummer Matt Sorum, singer Estelle, and so on.

Manilow, before his own show stopping performance, declared he started with Clive at Arista Records “in 1823.”

Mr. Brainwash — aka Thierry Guetta — was front and center after making a portrait of Clive and all his artists.

That gives you just a hint of the audience. Even Paris Hilton was there. She lost her Malibu home. She told me, “It’s not the house, it’s the memories, it’s all the art we made with the kids. It’s all gone.”

There were emotional remembrances of both producers Quincy Jones and Richard Perry (the latter featured Rod Stewart, Jane Fonda, Carly Simon, Ruth Pointer, and David Foster.) Universal Music giant Lucian Grange toasted beloved UMB Music publisher Jody Gerson. Recording Academy president Harvey Mason, Jr echoed their sentiments about Los Angeles.

The dinner and show are usually just a a celebration for the Recording Academy. But this year the whole night was a fundraiser for Musicares to support musicians who lost their homes or needed help from the LA wildfires. Davis announced he’d made a substantial six figure contribution himself. He also revealed one from philanthropist Iris Smith, who wasn’t there. (Instead, comic Jeff Ross — in the audience — cracked everyone up by taking a bow.) Hilton Hotels donated $500 per every guest at last night’s event.

The night was another roaring success for Clive, coupled with the fundraising component and many acknowledgments of everything that was lost this last month.

Box Office: “Dog Man” Barks Up $10 Million for Pete Davidson, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” Falls off the Radar

0

Friday night box office:

Pete Davidson is back! He’s gotten rid of some tattoos, but he’s funnier than ever. Pete stars in the animated “Dog Man,” which took in $10 million Thursday and Friday and land at number 1. Watch it do even better tonight.

Horror film “Companion” came in second, with $4 million. Jack Quaid stars with Sophie Thatcher. This could be the beginning of a franchise.

Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” has dropped off the radar. Badly named in light of this week’s tragedy in Washington DC, “Flight Risk” has terrible reviews and a low audience score. Lionsgate hasn’t turned in box office numbers for last night after a rough week. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!

Clive Davis Kicks Off Grammy Weekend With “Small” Private Dinner of A-Listers: See Who Was There

0

Tonight, Clive Davis and the Recording Academy have their annual pre-Grammy dinner and show, this year turned into a fundraising event for Musicares’ efforts for wildfire relief. Donations are already huge.

So last night Clive had another new annual experience: a private dinner for friends and family at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Clive throws it himself, what the almost 93 year old music mogul seems a “small” gathering so the lifetime New Yorker can see friends all at once.

Was their entertainment? Enter pop icon Neil Sedaka, only 86, who sat down at a baby grand piano and knocked out five of his hits like a champ. The guests went wild with standing ovations. Neil was his usual, self effacing sweetheart. The songs, like “Breaking Up is Hard to Do,” “Laughter in the Rain,” and “Solitaire,” have stood the test of time beautifully. Everyone sang along.

And who was everyone? Dame Joan Collins, looking like several million bucks, plus Barry Manilow, songwriters Diane Warren and Kenny Babyface Edmonds, famed record producer and performer Peter Asher, supermodel Beverly Johnson, former Guns n Roses and Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum, the great philanthropist Barbara Davis, her charity fundraiser superstar daughter Nancy Davis and her husband Ken Rickel, star entrepreneur Nikki Haskell, Republic Records chief Monte Lipman, “Laugh In” creator George Schlatter, just to name a few in the small gathering of over 100 luminaries.

I was thrilled to run into Candy Spelling, Broadway producer and mother of Tori, who told me the grim details of her $41 million Malibu home burning down during the fires. She’ll making a big donation tonight.

Tonight marks the 50th anniversary of Clive’s famous pre-Grammy dinner. Davis told the story of how it all began when Manilow, after attending the Grammys as an artist on Clive’s brand new Arista Records, asked where the after party was. Davis responded, “Party? Only 10 people work for us.” But that put a bug in his ear, and the party that people fight to get into was born.

Who’s coming tonight? These are closely held secrets. But come back here Sunday morning for all the dish!

Mel Gibson’s Unfortunately Titled “Flight Risk” Crashes at Box Office After DC Air Tragedy

0

Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” has been crashing at the box office mid week.

The movie starring Mark Wahlberg had one suspiciously great day on Tuesday when it made a shocking $1.5 million.

But the day before, Monday, the very panned film made just $829,143.

After the Tuesday spike, “Flight Risk” really collapsed. On Wednesday it was down 48%, and yesterday another 15%. The total since last Thursday is just $15.3 million.

So what’s going on? First of all, it’s a bad movie. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 21% from critics. The audience meter is 64%.

The bigger issue is timing. After the terrible air tragedy in Washington, DC, who would go to a movie titled “Flight Risk”? This is now literally a title that translates into “Stay away.”

No bad feelings for Gibson, an avowed racist, misogynist, and anti-semite. The movie wasn’t going to do well anyway, but this cinches it.

Will Smith to Present at Grammy Awards 3 Years After Being Suspended by the Oscars After Slap

Will Smith will be presenting an award at the Grammys this Sunday.

It was three years ago that he committed the Slap Heard and Seen Round the World at the 2022 Oscars. He got up out of his seat, walked to the stage, and hit Chris Rock.

The audience thought it was a joke until Will start shouting curse words at Rock.

The result was he was cancelled in a lot of areas. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences suspended him from the Oscars for 10 years. Even if he was nominated, he couldn’t come. (Ironically, he won an Oscar that night!)

Since then, Smith has lost a lot of work. He was in one hit movie, “Bad Boys Ride or Die.” Otherwise his career took a major blow.

But three years– America is no memory at all. If they could re-elect Donald Trump, there must be wide spread amnesia. Smith is trying to make a comeback with a new rap album coming soon from a small label.

Does America forgive and forget? Does Chris Rock? (He probably won’t be hosting the Grammys anytime soon.)

Smith may seem more humbled now. He lost his $41 million mansion in Pacific Palisades during the LA wildfires. Also, over time he’s come out looking a little sad after wife Jada Pinkett said they hadn’t lived together in years.

Again, widespread amnesia may be the answer. In “Men in Black,” Will and Tommy Lee Jones had a device that wiped memories clean. Turns out it was prescient!

In other news, Taylor Swift has also been announced as a presenter, along with SZA, Anthony Kiedis & Chad Smith, Cardi B, Gloria Estefan, Olivia Rodrigo, Queen Latifah, and Victoria Monét.

Lady Gaga Debuts New Song at All Star Six Hour Fire Aid Shows That Raised Millions for Relief

0

The Fire Aid shows may still be going on somewhere.

The four hour show at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles started two hours later than the one at the Kia Forum, each produced by Irving Azoff and his family along with Live Nation and AEG.

Both shows were spectacular showcases of the very best of pop music, like a crazy jukebox full of hits. The shows raised millions for wildfire relief. Not only were they packed with stars, but there were also videos about the fires, and people on stage speaking about losing their homes.

The line ups were so dizzying that people really didn’t leave their seats very much. There was simply too much going on. Just some highlights Stevie Wonder and Sting performing “Higher Ground” after Sting out on a masterclass of hits.

The show in the Dome was divided between younger and older artists. I noticed that a younger crowd — lots of young girls — were seated further back in (somewhat) cheaper seats. They sang along loudly to all their top 40 stars like Billie Eilish and Finneas, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo, and so on.

The older folks had the floor seats and while they were not as vocal for the young women, they stood and sang along to their songs by John Fogerty, Rod Stewart, Stevie Nicks, Sting and Stevie, and ultimately, Lady Gaga.

But that’s what the shows work, which they did as producer Joel Gallen cut back and forth on huge video screens between the two venues. It was interesting at the Dome that Gwen Stefani and No Doubt — our screens coming from the Forum — got a huge reaction as if they’d never left and Gwen hadn’t wasted a lot of time on “The Voice.”

The other act that got a shot in the arm was Katy Perry, escaped from “American Idol.” Perry had a flop album last year, but her live performance remains sensational. She needs some great songs now to resurrect her career.

There were celebrities in the audience, although they kept it low key. When former Vice President Kamala Harris and husband Doug Emhoff took their seats, there was an uproar of applause from that section that almost stopped the show. Downstairs in the press room, I ran into Jessica Alba, who I used to see regularly 20 years ago. Now she’s a mogul and wow — she hasn’t aged! Still a knockout and charming as ever.

Back on stage, the three living members of Nirvana played a raucous rock set with St. Vincent who was also joined by Kim Gordon. The great Waddy Wachtel wailed his guitar through Stevie Nicks’s winning set of hits. Earth Wind & Fire had the most joyous performance of the night, culminating in “September” but also included my personal favorite, “That’s the Way of the World.”

Was I surprised by Rod Stewart, now 80? Yes. He still has his swagger, and when he tosses off “Maggie May” it’s as if time stood still.

One thing about Billie Eilish– that “Birds of a Feather” is sneaky good. It could easily win Best Song at the Grammys this weekend.
It’s a much more traditional pop song than she and Finneas have written. Their unplugged acoustic set tonight was also top notch.

Lady Gaga closed the show with “Shallow,” her winning song from “A Star is Born.” But she also ended the night with a new song she said she and her fiancee wrote together called “All I Need is Time.” It has a very 60s pop sound, seems old fashioned at first, but then you realize you will never get it out of your head. I hope it’s on her new album.

Fire Aid was unexpected, pulled together very quickly and surprisingly organized. PR giant Larry Solters told me the first hour at the Kia Forum his head was spinning. But by the time he got to the Dome, and things were running smoothly at both locations, he could relax — a little.

An historic and memorable once in a lifetime event.

The fundraising continues tonight at the Musicares dinner honoring the Grateful Dead. Saturday more money will be raised at the Clive Davis Recording Academy dinner and show with more A list stars. Then Sunday wraps it all up with the Grammy Awards. The whole Grammy week has been a boon for first responders, survivors, etc.

“Emilia Perez” Star Karla Sofia Gascon’s Past Racist Tweets Unravel A Year of Oscar Campaigning

0

Karla Sofia Gascon, star of “Emilia Perez,” has destroyed the movie’s entire Oscar campaign in one day. It’s tragic because so many people worked so hard to make this movie a hit and to get it the most Oscar nominations of the year.

But the discovery of Gascon’s past racist Tweets has burned down Jacques Audiard’s movie faster than the recent wildfires. Certainly the people who worked on the film like Audiard, the cast and crew must have known this was Gascon’s personality.

But here we are, and it’s terrible.

A post from from Sept. 2, 2020, with a photo of a Muslim family in a restaurant, including a woman in a burka, reads: “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

And it just keeps getting worse.

When “Nomadland” won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2020, Gascon wrote:

“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”

Gascon expressed hate for Muslims and Asians. She had nothing good to say about George Floyd’s murder. She wrote: “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins,” she posted. “They’re all wrong.”

Gascon lost her mind during the pandemic. “So many scientists in the world making bombs, so many scholars constructing objects for space, so many medicinal factories and there’s no one who can get in line with this Chinese shit. (shrug emoji) In the end, it was a tremendous show for a new variant of the flu, avian or coronavirus.”

Journalist Sarah Hagi dug up the Tweets, and while it seems like an effort to undermine “Emilia Perez,” the reality is Gascon’s level of hate is shocking. She wrote these things, for better or worse. The wore part is that she’s the first trans actress to get an Oscar nomination and she’s not a role model for anyone.

My sympathies to Netflix and everyone who worked on the film.

Shock: The Great Marianne Faithfull Has Died at 78, Influential Singer Performer, Girlfriend of Mick Jagger

0

Marianne Faitfull has died at 78. The rock and roll world is in tears. Known for being Mick Jagger’s girlfried in the 60s, Marianne went on to become a hugely influential singer and performer. This is tragic.

Her family sent an announcement to the BBC: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” a statement said. “Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”

She was the Stones’ muse, getting a hit with “Ruby Tuesday.” But she also had her own career and was celebrated for her own contribution to the canon of rock music. Her solo album, “Broken English,” remains a classic.

I only met Marianne once. My friend, Kathy Schenker, spotted her in an optique store in Paris. We were overcome, but the great icon was so nice to us, and we never got over it.

Condolences to everyone.

RIP John Doumanian, Longtime Rep for Close Friend Woody Allen, Appeared in 16 of His Films

0

Fans of Woody Allen’s movies all know the name John Doumanian.

A close friend of Woody’s, agent for Woody’s jazz band with Eddy Davis, John appeared in 15 Allen films and his TV movie, “Don’t Drink the Water.” In “Annie Hall,” he played the coke dealer.

Peter Wolf of the J Geils Band, another close friend, announced John’s passing today.

From 1959 to 1991, John was married also to Woody’s long time producer Jean Doumanian. Seeing his Hitchock type cameos in Woody Allen movies was very comforting. He’s what binds them all together.

Jack Nicholson’s Son, Ray, Stars in a RomDram Co-Directed by Larry David’s Daughter, Cazzie (Trailer)

0

Ray Nicholson is up and running with his movie career.

Jack Nicholson’s youngest son (his mom is Rebecca Broussard) has made a bunch of smaller movies already.

Now he stars in “I Love You Forever,” starring Larry David’s precocious daughter, Cazzie. She co-wrote and co-directed it and appears in it with Sofia Black-D’Elia, Jon Rudnitsky, and Raymond Cham Jr.

“I Love Your Forever” was seen at last year’s SXSW Festival but for some reason not seen at Tribeca, Toronto, or Sundance. The movie has a very healthy 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

WarningL this is not a straight on comedy. It’s a Rom Com that turns into a Rom Dram.
