RIP Ann Morgan Guilbert of “Dick Van Dyke,” “The Nanny,” “Seinfeld” Fame

The great comic actress Ann Morgan Guilbert has died at age 87. She played Millie Helper, wife of Jerry, on “The Dick van Dyke Show” from 1961 to 1966– most of the 61 episodes. The Helpers were next door neighbors in New Rochelle to Rob and Laura Petrie (Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore). Millie was to Laura as Ethel once was to Lucy.

Guilbert never stopped working after that, appearing in countless TV shows.  But her big second run came in 1999, when she played Fran Drescher’s grandmother Yetta in “The Nanny” for many episodes. She also appeared memorably in two episodes of “Seinfeld” as Evelyn, the elder Seinfelds’ friend in Boca Vista, Florida, alongside Sandy Baron.

In 2010, Guilbert finally got her movie gold when she played the grandmother in Nicole Holofcener’s excellent comedy, “Please Give,” opposite Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt. Guilbert was one of those great veteran actors whose career spanned a lifetime in Hollywood. The only award she ever received was a cast member of “Please Give” when the film won the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. But her  work lives on forever.

Monty Python’s John Cleese Backs UK Exit from EU, Says Group’s Chief Should Be Hanged

0

And now for something completely different:

Monty Python’s John Cleese came out in the last few days for Brexit, the British movement to leave the European Union. He also said that Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the EU, should be “hanged.”

Cleese has been on a rant since Saturday on Twitter, fighting with everyone. Fans can’t believe how stupid and right wing he’s become. But maybe four failed marriages and lots of alimony will do that to you.

Cleese is also Trumpian in his argument about limiting immigration:

It’s unclear how the other Pythons feel about Cleese’s declarations. At first I thought it was tongue in cheek. But Cleese seems to be dead serious here. Very strange in deed and causing an uproar in the UK.

Seth Meyers Bans Donald Trump from Appearing on “Late Night” (Watch Video)

0

Seth Meyers has banned Donald Trump from appearing on his show. It’s because Trump has pulled the press credentials of the Washington Post. As Meyers notes, Trump wasn’t coming on his show anyway. But now it’s clear. I love Seth’s show, and I’m thrilled to see this. His “Closer Look” pieces are brilliant.

RIP Henry McCullough, Played Lead Guitar on Paul McCartney’s “My Love,” “Live and Let Die”

0

Henry McCullough died yesterday. He was 72 and mostly famous for playing with Paul McCartney and Wings in the early 70s. He was the lead guitarist on a great album, “Red Rose Speedway” which included his solo on “My Love.” He also played on two classic McCartney singles– “Live and Let Die” and “Hi Hi Hi.” That’s his blistering guitar everywhere. He also played on McCartney’s “Ram” album, and on at least three Joe Cocker albums.

Paul posted on a note on his website: “I was very sad to hear that Henry McCullough, our great Wings guitarist, passed away today. He was a pleasure to work with, a super-talented musician with a lovely sense of humour. The solo he played on ‘My Love’ was a classic that he made up on the spot in front of a live orchestra. Our deepest sympathies from my family to his.”

Susie Essman Says Larry David Told Her About New “Curb” Season Month Ago– Production Should Commence In January (Listen)

0

Actress Susie Essman told WOR’s “Len Berman and Todd Schnitt in the Morning” that she expects that she’ll be part of the new season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

“Larry (David) contacted me about a month ago and he said he’s seriously considering season nine.  So I assume he’s not going to tell me that if he’s writing me out,” Essman told Berman and Schnitt.

Essman plays Susie Greene, Jeff Garlin’s foul mouthed wife, on the show. HBO announced “Curb”  is coming back after being off the air since 2011.  “It seems like January is when we’re going to go back into production,” Essman said.

Grammy Awards Get 10 Year Commitment from CBS, Will Be On When Justin Bieber Does Duets with Cats

0

The Grammy Awards are never going away, like it or not. They’ve just renewed with CBS until 2026. By then they will have been on CBS for 54 years. Also, in 2026 Justin Bieber, a pop star from the 20-teens, will have a duets album with cats. His song, “Anne Frank, I Love You” will be number 7 on the Geezer Chart.

The Grammys’ entire success is due to Pierre Cossette, the producer who invented the show and ran until his death a few years ago. Cossette was an incredible TV mind, a raconteur, a man with taste who also invented the concept of duets or triplets, putting disparate singers on stage together occasionally for huge moments. He brought excitement to the Grammys.

But this year’s show was a mess. There were all kinds of mash ups that didn’t work. Plus the ratings dropped to a 7 year low.

The next show in February 2017 should be better. Adele will be the main attraction. Plus we’ve had big albums from Drake, Beyonce and Kanye West. Also, Paul Simon, a David Bowie tribute with “Blackstar,” and the Monkees should pull in the older crowd. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Sting each should have some new music out before the end of the year.

But the Grammys must return to diversity– and I don’t mean race, I mean the kinds of music they present on the broadcast. Pandering to crap top 40 for ratings is what killed them this year. Where is classical, jazz, opera? Why isn’t Renee Fleming singing on that show? They’ve got to make it smart again, and not a jukebox for people with ADHD. Otherwise it will be DOA.

Pop Phenom: Tony Winning “Hamilton” Score Number 1 on iTunes, Amazon, Star Leslie Odom Goes Top 10

0

The score to Broadway show “Hamilton” is now number 1 on both iTunes and Amazon.com. The Tony winner is setting a record for best selling ever Broadway show CD and download.

It’s also huge on Spotify. The title track has already been streamed over 10 million times. The unofficial count for the number of times the top 10 “Hamilton” tracks hovers around 75 million.

I can’t think of another Broadway show with a CD so popular in recent history, not “Beautiful” or “Rent” or just about anything else.

It’s funny, too, because after all the hype last year about “Hamilton” being rap or hip hop, it actually sounds like a very mainstream pop R&B album when you listen to it at home, far from the stage. That’s the beauty of it. As I wrote last summer from the opening at the Public Theater, “Hamilton” is full of hooks and melodies. And it’s all original. Nothing is sampled.

Now all “Hamilton” is missing is a hit single. I’d suggest “Helpless.” But not having a single means that fans are buying the whole album all the time, and not cherry picking different songs. They want the whole experience.

One more plus from the “Hamilton”mania: Tony winning star Leslie Odom Jr’s self titled album on S-Curve Records has risen to number 10 on iTunes where it’s exclusive until June 24th. On Amazon, where you can buy the physical CD then, Odom’s album (he won Best Actor in a Musical) is number 30 just from pent up demand.

“Hamilton” Creators Get Full Four Year Scholarship Named for Them at Wesleyan University

0
“Hamilton” creators Lin Manuel Miranda and director Thomas Kail are getting a full four year scholarship named for them and the Tony winning musical at alma mater Wesleyan University.
The Wesleyan University Hamilton Prize will be awarded to the incoming student (beginning in the class of 2021) who has submitted a creative written work—whether fiction, poetry, lyrics, play, script, nonfiction or other expression—judged to best reflect originality, artistry and dynamism. Miranda and Kail will serve as honorary chairs of the judging committee, which will be composed of other Wesleyan alumni and faculty.
That’s quite an honor for the newly minted Tony winners, and for Miranda– Pulitzer Prize winner this year, as well.

One thing I didn’t mention from Sunday’s Tony Awards: usually the big expected winner of the night walks the red carpet last at awards shows. But Miranda– and his Hamiltonians– came early and made sure to see everyone who wanted to see them. It was very refreshing.

EXCLUSIVE Michael Jackson’s Son Prince Starts Video Production Company, Signs First Act (Gorgeous Triplets)

Michael Jackson’s son, Prince, is becoming an entrepreneur.

He’s started a real video company called King’s Son Productions, registered as a limited liability corporation this past Marchkings son logo in California.

And Prince has signed his first act, gorgeous matching sisters called the Sco Triplets.

Prince named his company after his father, the King of Pop, hence King’s Son. He’s attending Loyola Marymount College and is obviously planning a future in entertainment business.

I think he’ll do just fine even though he’s also putting out a video by Michael Jackson hanger-on Omer Bhatti. Twenty years ago, Michael plucked found this Norwegian kid doing Jacko imitations in Tunisia. (Omer is Norwegian.) Michael kept the kid, and hired his parents as a nanny and gofer at Neverland. Since Michael died, Omer has latched himself onto the Jacksons as an older “sibling.”

Meantime, sister Paris has signed to appear in a magic special this fall with Las Vegas star Criss Angel.

Curb Your Enthusiasm: Press Release Announcing New Season of Larry David Show Greeted Like Second Coming

0

LOL. A press release sent the trades into a tizzy today.

HBO announced Larry David would return for a 9th season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” That’s it. That’s all the news.

When will this happen? How many episodes? Who’s in it?

Answers: nada. Pretty pretty much nothing. Except this one quote which the trades are dining on like caviar for starved piranha: “In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’”

But it’s a good get for new HBO chief Casey Bloys because Larry has not committed to anything in a long time. He’s spent the last few months playing Bernie Sanders on “Saturday Night Live.” He had a Broadway show called “Fish in the Dark.” He’s just had fun being Larry David.

Presumably Jeff Garlin will return. And you know Larry loves J.B. Smoove. Richard Lewis would be missed. Maybe Cheryl Hines could come back for a couple of episodes.

But something tells me Season 9 is farther away than this announcement says. When I asked Larry about a new “Curb” at the opening of “Waitress” back on April 24th, he seemed unenthusiastic and non committal. So applause to Bloys for getting even an announcement. It’s pretty pretty pretty good news.
