UPDATE Famed Greenwich Village Eatery Da Silvano Shuts Doors After 40 Years– Owner’s Divorce Pending

0

THURSDAY 12/22 More going on here than rent hikes according to NY Post. Silvano’s wife of 12 years, Marissa Acocella, is divorcing him. She wanted to see the restaurant’s books. But the restaurant is now closed, and so are the books. Silvano’s talking about moving to Italy. There will be a lot more going on here…Arrivederci, Silvano!

WEDNESDAY 12/21 Da Silvano is no more.

The New York Post reports that Silvano Marchetto has shut down his famed celebrity spot, overpriced but always fun, after 4o years.

Da Silvano was the home of the $52 lambchop, so let’s start there. It was unaffordable even if you were rich. But it didn’t matter. Between the wonderful outdoor patio and the cozy Tuscan restaurant indoors, you were always bound to see someone famous, a movie star, a media star, whoever.  Madonna, Sean Penn, Rihanna, Graydon Carter– you name it.

And while Silvano was crotchety, he was also fun and welcoming.

Cause of death: the rent. The Post says it was up to $41,000 a month. And this is a small restaurant.

What will replace it? A bank? Another CVS? Thanks to greedy landlords, New York is being destroyed. There are dozens of open storefronts for rent everywhere. On Bleecker Street in particular, many signs are up. Small businesses, artisans, designers, all the “interesting places” that people come to see on the weekends– they are disappearing very quickly.

You can thank Mike Bloomberg. He put this in motion. DeBlasio has done nothing. In the era of Trump, it will just go on and on.

Exclusive: Family of Murdered “Voice” Singer Christine Grimmie Files Suit Against AEG Live, Orlando Philharmonic

0

Today in Florida the bereaved family of Christina Grimmie has filed suit against concert promoter AEGLive SE and the Orlando Philharmonic. Grimmie, 22, a singer from “The Voice” whose star was rising fast, was murdered in cold blood last June 10th by a crazed fan while she signed autographs following a performance at Orlando’s Plaza Live Theater. The killer, who committed suicide, was identified as Kevin James Loibl, 27.

The suit was filed by Grimmie’s estate including her parents and brother. The defendants listed are AEG Live and the Orlando Philharmonic, owner of Plaza Live Theater.

The complaint claims that the promoters had no metal detectors and didn’t perform body pat downs to prevent fans from bringing weapons into the facility. They just performed cursory bag inspections. Loibl was thus able to bring in two Glock handguns, two full magazines of bullets, and a large hunting knife. Loibl shot Christina three times before being subdued by her brother. Loibl killed himself on the spot. Grimmie died later at the hospital.

Christina Grimmie was on the fast track to a great career. She was managed by Selena Gomez’s mother, who’d seen her performing on YouTube. The suit details her rapid rise, and how her parents and brother went to work for her in establishing and maintaining the career.

The lawsuit claims that in the past, the Orlando Philharmonic and its security team have used metal detectors and body pat downs for events, but this time, for some reason, did not. The complaint points out that 40% of Florida households contain at least one firearm.

If the lack of security turns out to be true, it’s pretty shocking. Just last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center, we were wanded and sent through a metal detector for the premiere of Denzel Washington’s “Fences.” It’s unfortunately a common occurrence these days.

The Grimmies’ suit was filed by Brian D. Caplan of Reitler, Kailas and Rosenblatt, in New York.

RIP Hit Country Songwriter Andrew Dorff, 40, Brother of Actor Stephen Dorff

0

Andrew Dorff, the hit country songwriter brother of actor Stephen Dorff, has died at age 40. Dorff had many hit with artists like Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney. He’d written songs with Stephen for a mockumentary called “Wheeer,” which Stephen co-wrote and co-produced. It will be released in February.

There’s no cause of death listed so far. But Andrew Dorff was very well known, and very successful. Condolences to his family and friends.

Need a Xmas Gift for a Billionaire? Knockout $600K Dale Chihuly Wall Installation For Sale in Toronto

0

Need a last minute gift for a billionaire? The best thing I saw all year was in a Toronto art gallery owned by the famed Sandra Ainsley. It’s a $600,000 (price approx) Dale Chihuly wall installation that is so magnificent your head spins when you try to take it all in. I’m not always a Chihuly fan, but this piece– 12 feet high, 30 feet long– needs to be in a large mansion, say in Pacific Palisades or Miami Beach. Or maybe an amazing new office building with a huge atrium.

The piece is called Ikebana Doppio Suite #9, 01.875.d24 and it measures 84H x 360W”

The rest of Ainsley’s collections are equally wonderful.

Sandra Ainsley– about 20 minutes outside of Toronto center– has the most amazing pieces I’ve ever seen. She’s the local rep for Chihuly and the art hot spot in Toronto.Sandra Ainsley Gallery is 100 Sunrise Ave. Unit 150 Toronto, ON, M4A 1B3. The phone is 416-214-9490. It’s worth a trip to Toronto just to see all the pieces in person!

Rock Hall, As I Predicted: Pearl Jam, Tupac, ELO, Baez Plus Bombastic Bands Yes, Journey

0

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: they chose six, not five to induct and still snubbed once again  Janet Jackson, Joe Tex. and of course, Peter Wolf and the J Geils Band.

As I predicted: Pearl Jam, Tupac, ELO, Joan Baez plus the bombastic bands Yes and Journey. You can stop believing that the Rock Hall is meaningful in any way. As usual, the people who should have gotten in got the Long Distance Runaround.

Nile Rodgers is getting a special award for excellence, meaning he didn’t make the vote again but this is so embarrassing that the RRHOF has waived him in. They did this a couple of years ago for Ringo Starr.

I really thought J Geils would make it this time. I really thought: how can this insulting treatment go on? And yet, it does. Joe Tex? He’s dead. And listen: no old R&B acts will ever get in again. No living ones will either. Chaka Khan? If only Prince were alive, he’d have made the HBO show and inducted her. But he’s dead, so it’s not possible. Tupac is the black act, he IS dead. Maybe the people who conspired to kill him will induct him. That will get ratings!

Jann Wenner is so hopeful that one of the Beatles will show up for ELO, or that Bob Dylan will come to the HBO filmed ceremony for ELO’s Jeff Lynne or Joan Baez. It ain’t happening. If Dylan didn’t show for Joan’s 75th birthday at the Beacon or the Nobel Prize ceremony, he’s not whoring himself out for Wenner. And Lynne? He’s a lure for McCartney and/or Starr. But you’d think by now they’d gotten how this works.

And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Paul McCartney Was Like a Band on the Run Monday Night at Son-in-Law’s Movie Premiere

0

Jason Binn’s DuJour magazine-sponsored cocktail party for Simon Aboud’s new movie couldn’t have been nicer. Held in the 2nd floor ballroom of the very ritzy new Park Hyatt Hotel on West 57th (across from Carnegie Hall), the party was catered with a slider bar on one side of the room and a risotto station with hand sliced black truffles on the opposite end.

The crowd was swanky and included a lot of Sir Paul’s family including photographer daughter Mary (she’s married to Simon) as well as brother in law John Eastman and wife Jody, their son Lee, who is also Paul’s attorney with his dad, Paul’s son James, the musician; and niece Louise. The late Linda Eastman McCartney must have been smiling down from heaven.

And while all the talk was of Simon’s movie “This Beautiful Fantastic,” which will be released in the US in February by Samuel Goldwyn Company, the growing number of guests were hoping for a Sir Paul sighting.

They got one, alright: Sir Paul and wife Nancy Shevell arrived around 7pm, walked right into the room without fanfare or a bodyguard, and were immediately overwhelmed by a tsunami of well wishers. Before Paul could even see his daughter or son in law, or anyone, he looked like he turned white. In less than four minutes, the McCartneys exited the Park Hyatt. Was it the crowd rushing him? Or the deejay who immediately switched to “Say Say Say” as flashbulbs started popping? That error alerted everyone that Paul was in the room!

The story has a happy ending: Paul and Nancy went downtown to the actual screening on West 23rd St. where they walked the red carpet, took photos on the step and repeat, and hung out under calmer conditions. The movie got a thumbs up from the audience– among its stars is Jessica Brown Findlay, who played Lady Sybil on “Downton Abbey.”

By the way: like sister Stella and mom Linda, Mary McCartney is an absolute doll, very much a real person and totally delightful. No surprise– the McCartney- Eastmans have always been a fun, friendly, classy gang!

Aretha Franklin Sent Flowers to Viola Davis for Critics Choice Award: “From One Natural Woman to Another”

0

EXCLUSIVE Past Oscar nominee and likely 2017 winner Viola Davis got an especially thrilling congrats last week after winning the Critics Choice Award of Best Supporting Actress in “Fences.” She tells me the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, sent her a huge bouquet of roses with this card: “From one natural woman to another.”

“Oh my god,” Viola said, a sentiment echoed by her producer husband Julius Tennon. “You should see these flowers. I couldn’t believe it!” We talked last night at Tavern on the Green at the New York “Fences” premiere party after a wildly successful screening at the Rose Room in Jazz at Lincoln Center. Director-star Denzel Washington was there with the entire cast. Guests ran the gamut from Phylicia Rashad and Ruben Santiago Hudson to Michael Moore.

Aretha was inspired by Davis’s speech accepted the #SeeHer award and the. She said: “I’ve always discovered the heart of my characters by asking ‘why?’ I truly believe that the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are. I just recently embraced that at 51.”

Davis is a hot as a pistol right now thanks to “Fences” and her hit TV show “How to Get Away with Murder.” Viola is so hot that I can tell you exclusively that Meryl Streep is presenting her with a Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 5th, three days before the Golden Globes.

“Fences” opens Christmas Day, and it’s poised for a nice box office take and many Oscar nominations. Seeing it again last night, I was blown away by the August Wilson play which has been adapted and opened up for film. Washington has done a remarkable job. But it’s the performances by every cast member that are heart-rending. Davis is already being talked about like crazy. But Denzel Washington is no slouch. As Troy Maxson, Denzel is on screen most of the time. He is ferociously invested in Troy, revealing him in ways that elevate “Fences” to the venerated status of “Death of a Salesman.” We are witnessing a classic in the making.

Paramount is on fire, too– “Fences,” “Silence,” “Arrival” are all in the Oscar mix along with “Florence Foster Jenkins.” Three months ago everyone feared for Paramount. Now everyone wants to come to their parties. Ah, Hollywood.

Grammy Award Lifetime Achievement Awards to Sly Stone, Nina Simone, Charley Pride, Velvet Underground

0

The Grammy Awards for Lifetime Achievement: gospel singer Shirley Caesar, jazz performer Ahmad Jamal, Charley Pride (one of only a few African American superstars in country music), Jimmie Rodgers (lauded as the Father of Country Music), soul singer Nina Simone, Sly Stone and rock band The Velvet Underground.  If Sly shows up and is in decent shape, that should be quite a ceremony!

Plus the great Mo Ostin, who made Warner Bros. records a powerhouse in the 70s and 80s, and Philadelphia International hit songwriter Thom Bell, are among the Trustee Honors winners along with Ralph Peer (who recorded the first country records, by The Carter Family and Rodgers, in the famed 1927 Bristol Sessions). Alan Dower Blumlein is the Technical GRAMMY Award recipient, and his biggest achievement is the invention of the stereo in 1931.

Mo Ostin is responsible for careers from Bonnie Raitt to Prince to Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, the list goes on and on. Thom Bell — often with the late Linda Creed– wrote some of the most enduring songs of all time including most of the hits for the Stylistics and the Spinners.

Here’s a list of Bell’s credits:

  • 1972: “I’m Stone in Love with You” – The Stylistics
  • 1972: “I’ll Be Around” – The Spinners

  • 1976: “The Rubberband Man” – The Spinners
  • 1979: “Are You Ready for Love” – Elton John (with the Spinners)
  • 1979: “Mama Can’t Buy You Love” – Elton John
  • 1981: “Silly” – Deniece Williams
  • 1982: “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle” – Deniece Williams
  • 1990: “I Don’t Have the Heart” – James Ingram

The other big news is that Debra Lee, head of BET, will be honored by NARAS and Clive Davis at the annual pre-Grammy gala on February 11th. Neil Portnow — great choices, he’s working overtime this year!

Alan Thicke Memorial Brings Together Liberal Leonardo diCaprio and Right Winger Kirk Cameron

0

You can only imagine what’s going through Leonardo DiCaprio’s head (take a look at him in this photo) at Alan Thicke’s memorial. Leo, an avowed liberal, backer of Hillary Clinton, is literally staring holes through the back of the head of crazy right winger Kirk Cameron. They were each on the show “Growing Pains” along with Joanna Kerns back in the 1980s.

Thicke’s daughter in law, Dolly, posted this picture and few others on her Facebook page. Dolly wrote:

“Tonight’s memorial for Alan was just about perfect. So much family and so many historic friends came out to remember our beloved father-figure. Speaking for Alan so beautifully was (I’m realizing now) an all-star cast. We heard from our own Robin Thicke who brought up all dear dad’s best friends, Bob Saget, Bill Maher, Alex Trebec who I had no idea had such old deep ties to our family, the entire cast of Growing Pains including Leo and Kirk Cameron who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time, along with his wife who became an instant friend. The real star of the evening was Joanna Konjevod who came all the way to Santa Barbara with us to help watch our baby girl during the memorial for Brennan and I.”

But oh to be a fly on the wall. Did Leo and Kirk even speak? (I doubt it.) Kirk Cameron put the cray on crazy a long time ago. But what a picture! I hope Bob Saget, who was also a guest, posts some comments soon. Or Bill Maher. Please, guys.

Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” Has a 96 on RottenTomatoes But It’s Not Getting Oscar Action– Yet

0

Good news for Paramount: Martin Scorsese’s “Silence,” which opens on Friday, has a 96 rating on Rotten Tomatoes. There are 27 positive reviews and only one negative one. (Imagine being the one guy who doesn’t get this amazing movie!)

But I keep getting these Oscar prediction updates from places like GoldDerby.com. These sites have turned the Oscars into a kind of 24/7 game. They are often way off the mark and not in touch with the Academy. On these sites, so far “Silence” has not emerged in any form. The leaders of the guessing game are “Manchester by the Sea,” “La La Land,” and “Moonlight.” All of this is based on critics’ awards from across the country.

“Silence” was screened too late for those groups, and too late for the Golden Globes and Critics Choice. So Paramount and Scorsese are rolling the dice for the Oscars. With the right campaigns, they should do very very well. I have to put “Silence” at the top of my list for 2016, followed by those other three already mentioned, plus “Lion,” “Fences,” “Arrival,” “20th Century Women,” “Hell or High Water,” and “Sully.”

Andrew Garfield gives a far better performance– more nuanced, better written, much deeper– in “Silence” than he does in “Hacksaw Ridge.” I hope Academy voters really watch him in “Silence.” Of course, it’s hard to beat Casey Affleck or Denzel Washington this year, but at least let’s get Garfield’s better work in there.

Also watch for Liam Neeson as a supporting actor nod in “Silence.” Mahershala Ali is already the front runner in Supporting Actor for “Moonlight.” He’s certainly my choice. But I’d like to see Neeson, as well as Dev Patel (Lion), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), and Lucas Hedges (Manchester). Also not to be forgotten: Mykelti Williamson and Stephen Henderson from “Fences.” Brilliant work.
