Ariana Grande Says She’ll Return to Manchester for a Memorial Concert

Ariana Grande says she’ll return to Manchester for a memorial concert. “We will not quit or operate in fear,” the singer said on Twitter.

This Preview of Sam Moore Singing on the Warrior Games Commercial Will Blow Your Mind

0

This preview of famed singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer singing on the Warrior Games commercial will blow your mind. The Games are in Chicago June 30-July 8th. I sure hope there’s a full version coming of this song, called “Show for You.” Holy moley! Sam Moore, by the way, is 81. His voice just gets better and better.

Box Office: “Baywatch” is a Wipe Out, “Pirates” May Still Have Some Swashbuckle

0

The Weds-Thursday box office is in. “Baywatch” is a wipe out. Paramount’s taken in $4.5 million over the two nights. The future is dim, to say the least. Projections are for more maybe $20 million over the four day holiday weekend. After Warner’s mess with “CHiPS,” maybe it’s time not to make keep remaking these TV shows. They weren’t good in the first place, they aren’t good now.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” is panned everywhere. But the box office may not be a total disaster, just a “disappointment.” Starting with $5.5 million Thursday night, and $34 million international, there’s some hope for the moment. The film is literally coasting on brand name recognition and “nothing else out there.” If your choice is between nitwit lifeguards, and some good sword play, what’s the answer? Plus you’re looking for Paul McCartney.

Yes, that’s right. 50 years after the release of the greatest rock album ever made, you’re looking for its creator in a Pirates movie. Of course, 240 years after the United States declared independence, a crazy person is president. So all bets are off!

Some good news: the word on “Wonder Woman” is very good. What a relief. More on that later…

Media: Lawrence O’Donnell Off MSNBC “Last Word” Second Night in a Row

It doesn’t look good for Lawrence O’Donnell at MSNBC. There was some hope last week that the talk show network would negotiate a new contract for the popular host. But he’s off the air tonight, and was off the air last night. All signs point to O’Donnell not returning to say goodbye. His contract ends June 4th.

O’Donnell is the second highest rated show on MSNBC, which is having a boom time. O’Donnell and Rachel Maddow are beating Fox News and CNN in the key demos and have built a big following. But O’Donnell has been particularly harsh on Donald Trump. NBC is thought to be leaning toward moving their viewpoint to the center-right. NBC News chief Andy Lack is said to lack interest in O’Donnell.

I think this is such a mistake. O’Donnell is one of the most erudite clear thinkers on TV. He’s really NBC’s Charlie Rose, and they should be appreciating that. But of course, NBC didn’t appreciate Harry Smith, either. And Megyn Kelly is coming…

Bette Midler Accepts Outer Critics Award for “Hello Dolly”: “This is the hardest job I’ve ever had in my whole life”

0

Most of the stars who won awards from the Outer Critics Circle Awards showed up on Thursday afternoon for the annual pre-theater dinner at Sardi’s. Bette Midler came, and accepted her award for Best Actress in a Musical– “Hello, Dolly!”– with class and aplomb. She said: “This is the hardest job I’ve ever had in my whole life. You people on Broadway are nuts. I’ve never encountered people who worked so hard and still are kind of cheerful about it.” She joked: “I mean, I’m riding all the way to the bank…[but] I’ve never had to work this hard.”

Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon, each of whom won for “The Little Foxes,” came on time and stayed through the whole two hour event. Andy Karl, star of “Groundhog Day,” picked up his award, and joked about his notoriously torn ACL. Ruben Santiago Hudson was there for Best Revival of a Play, which he directed– August Wilson’s “Jitney.” Designers, directors, creative people galore all managed to get themselves to Sardi’s. “Come From Away” picked up Best New Musical and “Oslo” was Best Play.

Broadway stars Danny Burstein, Christopher Fitzgerald, and Katie Finneran presented the awards. They proved to be entertaining and glib hosts.

Two award winners, however, skipped the proceedings. Danny DeVito didn’t show, claiming a scheduling problem. But the most egregious absentee was Kevin Kline, who won Best Actor for “Present Laughter.” After calling several times to say when he was coming, he didn’t come at all. You may recall that Kline snubbed his opening night party several weeks ago. All night there was a sigh that said “Kline” at an empty table.

DeVito, making his Broadway debut, didn’t make many friends by his absence. “Hollywood stars don’t take Broadway seriously,” sniffed one OCC nominator.

Despite the “Hello, Dolly!” $40 million box office and the officiousness of producer Scott Rudin, the show did well with the OCC. Gavin Creel won Best Featured Actor and the show picked up some creative awards. Midler got high marks for coming in quietly, hanging out at the back wearing a brightly flowered scarf on her head, for having clearly worked on her speech.

She joked about working “nearly every night– let’s not go there.” She also said: “It hurts. I have acid reflux! Oh my god. The clothes are so tight! …The truth is I’m having a ball. I’m enjoying myself. I’m working with people who are so so skilled and talented…It’s been a really steep learning curve for me. I guess I don’t mind standing up in front of you because you’ve already reviwed the show and I don’t give a shit! But I must say it was time for me come and do this.”

Hollywood Terror Alert: Manchester Tragedy Forces Cancellation of Premieres for Tom Cruise, Wonder Woman

0

The tragedy in Manchester was certain to affect public events, especially large gatherings.

Now comes word that Warner Bros. has cancelled the London premiere of “Wonder Woman” and Universal has done the same for “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise.

London premieres usually take place in Leicester Square, where huge numbers of fans crowd up to see the stars walk the red carpets. Even tight security has its vulnerabilities, but out there– I was there a couple of years ago for “World War Z”– can’t handle every possibility of trouble.

“All of us at Universal have been devastated by the terror attack in Manchester and continue to stand with the community and country as it recovers. Out of respect to those affected by this tragedy we have decided not to move forward with the London premiere for ‘The Mummy’ scheduled to take place next week,” Universal’s statement said.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by the recent tragedy in the UK. In light of the current situation, we will not be proceeding with our plans for the Wonder Woman premiere and junket activities in London,” Warner Bros. said in a statement.

A number of rock acts have cancelled UK shows this week including Blondie, Take That, and of course Ariana Grande, who had just finished a show in Manchester when the bombings occurred.

Johnny Depp and Tom Cruise: Two Movie Stars Who Can’t Really Promote Their Blockbuster Movies

0

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” starts playing tonight in theaters and opens officially tomorrow. You’d think Johnny Depp would be on the cover of magazines, and all over the talk shows.

But as far as I can tell, Depp will only appear on Jimmy Kimmel tomorrow night, taping today. Kimmel is on ABC, which is owned by Disney, which is releasing “Dead Men.” Kimmel will not be asking Depp about his massive financial problems or his scandalous marriage and divorce with Amber Heard.

In two weeks, Tom Cruise opens in “The Mummy,” from Universal. Last night, on the Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon asked his audience to write in suggestions for a game show skit he’ll do with Cruise. The Fallon appearance may be the only one we’ll see for Cruise in an uncontrolled situation. The Tonight Show is on NBC, which is owned by Universal, the studio releasing “The Mummy.” Fallon will not ask Cruise about his relationship with his 10 year old daughter, Suri, in or his reported plans to live in Clearwater, Florida to be near his beloved cult religion, Scientology.

The oddest outcome of the NBC-Universal tie for Cruise will be if he turns up on NBC’s “Today” show. Cruise famously fought with Matt Lauer on the show in 2005. He’s appeared since then, but viewers are looking for a rematch. Lauer must feel uneasy about being constrained from asking Cruise real questions. Maybe that will be a day when Lauer is “on assignment.”

This week, in Australia (his favorite place to promote movies), Cruise evaded questions about daughter Suri while working the red carpet. Universal is following the pattern of past Cruise premieres– having them in foreign countries first and avoiding big US splashes where rogue red carpet reporters might ask embarrassing questions. “The Mummy” will have a premiere in Taiwan and a major one in London.

Either way, promoting a movie with problematic stars is getting problematic. For Depp, this is especially dire because “Dead Men” is getting terrible reviews. A box office “disappointment” looms (I won’t say disaster until we see tonight’s numbers).

For Cruise, if “The Mummy” is a moderate hit, he’ll be more than happy. Cruise hasn’t had a real hit outside of the “Mission: Impossible” movies and “Edge of Tomorrow” for some time. If he can launch even a modest new franchise, there will be overall satisfaction.

Sean Hannity Is Having a Kanye-Type Donald Trump Meltdown on Twitter (Read)

0

Sean Hannity– please stop it. What the heck is going on? You’re having a public meltdown. Get off the Seth Rich story and come back to planet Earth. Seriously, I worked with Sean at Fox News and I liked him. (Don’t shoot me!) I don’t agree with him, that’s different. But when this kind of Twitter stuff starts, it’s time to go to the mattresses (or something). Please, someone give this man a chocolate malted and tell him to calm down.

ADDED: Cars.com has pulled advertising from Hannity’s show. He’s obviously convinced that this is the beginning of the end, as it was with O’Reilly. Not necessarily. He needs a crisis manager.

Sharon Stone Snubbed by amFAR Again as AIDS Group’s Salaries Rise, Income Falls

0

Cannes– rather the Hotel duCap in Antibes–braces again for the annual amFAR AIDS party on Thursday night. For the third year in a row, amFAR is snubbing their most recognized cheerleader celebrity, actress Sharon Stone. After years of being the face of amFAR fundraising, Stone has been systematically shut out by the most recent regime of the party-loving charity.

amFAR is not the biggest AIDS charity by any means. They’re just the most self-congratulatory. The Elisabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is actually worth more than twice as much– $120 million, according to their most recent tax filing. Glaser doesn’t throw parties all over the world, pay a party planner nearly $600,000 a year  to arrange for celebrities (as amFAR does), or pay a CEO $600,000 (as amFAR does).

amFAR’s total assets, recorded in their 2015 tax filing (which covers 2014-15), were just around $53 million. But they know how to have a good time. Their CEO, Kevin Frost, was paid a startling $607,167 in 2015. Frost makes twice as much as the next highest paid amFAR staffer. Not bad. Total compensation of top execs came to $2.5 million. A baker’s dozen of execs make six figure salaries.

Total donations to amFar dropped in 2015 from the previous year by over $1 million. Nevertheless, everyone– including outside contractors– got raises.

amFAR gives a lot of money to hospitals and research centers, certainly. But they’re not always successful. In 2014-15 they gave $550,000 to the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute of Port St Lucie, Florida. Then the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute promptly went out of business. amFAR invested a similar amount in the Institute a year earlier.

And what about these snazzy events you read about? Well, in total amFAR said on their 2015 tax filing that their events finished in the red– negative $10.2 million. The Cannes event in 2015 incurred about $5 million in direct expenses including entertainment, rental fees at the Hotel DuCap, and “other direct expenses” of about $2.5 million. They know how to live it up, too. One of amFAR’s biggest expenses listed for 2015 was travel: a smidge over $1 million. In Cannes, amFAR is known for shuttling staff and celebs around in private cars.

Tickets to tomorrow night’s gala help pay for all this stuff. The tickets are very expensive (unless you’re a celebrity, in which case they’re free).

Taylor Swift Had Nothing to Do with Getting Ariana Grande Home from Manchester

0

For some reason there’s a report circulating that Taylor Swift either chartered a plane for Ariana Grande to come home from Manchester, England or sent her own private plane. Neither story is true.

The source of this miscommunication comes from the Daily Mail, of course. They decided that the plane from which Grande disembarked in Boca Raton, Florida looked like a plane they’d seen Taylor Swift on. Hence, a “story.”

Live Nation, Grande’s tour promoter, put her on their plane for the ride home. Grande has a tour plane– how do people think she got to England, on United Airlines? Live Nation flew her to the UK, was flying her all over for her tour, and then bringing her home.

How Taylor Swift wound up in the story– well, it’s like the old days of PhotoPlay, when movie publicists would plant stories about their stars. These items made the stars seem like gods who helped each other out.

Always remember when reading about celebrities– they pay for nothing. The studios, record companies, and tour promoters always pick up the tab. And it’s charged back to you later.
