Taylor Swift Put Her “1989” Album on Spotify, and the World Yawned: Katy Perry Did Better

0

June 9th– so long ago, Like three weeks. Anyway, Katy Perry had announced her “Witness” album for that date. So Taylor Swift decided to return her catalog to Spotify. This included the “1989” album which never really had a run on streaming. Swift pulled it at the start.

So what happened. For Swift, the world yawned. Since June 9th, the hit record “Blank Space” has 9 million streams. “Bad Blood” has 7.3 million. “Wildest Dreams” has 7.4 million. “Style” is at 6.8 million.

Swift’s biggest hit from “1989” on Spotify: “Shake it Off” with 80 million streams.

Meanwhile, Perry’s new music seemed to captivate the streamers more. “Swish Swish” has 58 million so far. “Bon Appetit” has 66 million. “Chained to the Rhythm,” which has been out since February, has 334 million. An older hit, “Dark Horse,” has 459 million.

Swift still boasts the most streams between the two pop tarts. Her duet with Zayn Malik from “50 Shades Darker” stands at 500 million streams.

Streaming is a particular thing, as it turns out. Harry Styles, the male equivalent of these two, gets very little streaming yet he’s being booked into indoor arenas for next summer– he can sell tickets more than he can sell “records.” Streaming is also skewing younger and more urban.

Murdoch Closes NewsCorp’s “Heat St.” Website, Known for Stories about Bestiality and Pedophilia

0

So this is the end of HeatSt.com, the Rupert Murdoch invented News Corp website that did not fall under Fox News or any other particular heading at the octogenarian Aussie’s companies. It was though to be a sop to Louise Mensch, former Member of Parliament who stood up for Murdoch during the hacking hearings. Her reward was a job in America where her husband, Peter, manages the rock band AC/DC.

But Louise turned out to be more of a mensch than anyone thought. Almost as soon as the site began– they couldn’t use www.heatstreet.com because it belonged to a piercing salon in South Carolina– there was trouble. Donald Trump was on the rise. Even conservative Louise was appalled and began attacking him on Twitter. This was counter to the Fox News agenda. Before a years’ time, she was gone.

bestiality_Heat_Street_-_2017-07-02_19.23.38My Fox sources say that neither Louise nor the two people who succeeded her running Heat St. had any idea what they were doing nor cared about the staff. Mensch declared the site would be like a gadfly, and stand up for world views. But without much traffic, the site quickly started running weirdly salacious stories. Bestiality and pedophilia were specialties. There was a glut of them.

Heatst.com was under the News Corp banner, and apparently FoxNews.com wasn’t interested in it. This was yet another costly failure for the whole of the company– remember The Daily? Oy vey. That online magazine was a catastrophe. My Fox sources say that as long ago as last November Mensch’s right hand man and successor, Noah Kotch, was lobbying Murdoch to put him charge of FoxNews.com. Now he’s got the job; I don’t know what that means for the good people who were working there.

“Wait and see how downmarket Foxnews.com gets,” says a Murdochian source. Up til now, Foxnews.com has tried to be the more thoughtful brother of the fakenews TV network. Expect that to change. Some Heat St-ers will go to Dow Jones Market Watch. Others may open a Manhattan branch of the piercing parlor. Mensch is somewhere near Mars shouting conspiracy theories over the din of AC/DC.

Dan Aykroyd on Singing with Original Soul Man Sam Moore on PBS July 4th Show: “He sings like he was still 19. His presence and talent alone are worth the price of admission”

Dan Aykroyd is psyched to be singing with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grammy winner Sam Moore on PBS July 4th. He Tweeted today: “Elwood and Zee Blues are delighted that original Soul Man, Sam Moore will be joining the Blues Brothers for the “Capitol Fourth” concert in D.C. Sam, the great hit-maker for Stax/Volt, sings like he was still 19. His presence and talent alone are worth the price of admission.”

Moore, 81, just wowed the crowd at Chicago’s Warrior Games last night, performing alongside Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson. The Warrior Games Anthem, “Show for You,” is such a hit that it’s up on iTunes:

Meanwhile, check out Moore’s new version of the “Star Spangled Banner” also on iTunes. It’s the best new version of this chestnut since Whitney Houston.

Donald Trump Posts Video of Himself “Fighting” CNN, Doesn’t Realize How History Will Treat Him

0

Donald Trump continues to dig his own grave with historians. Every day he offers more evidence of mental instability and an inability to be a statesman. He is a small man, with small hands, and a small mind. He actually posted this video himself, to his Twitter account. He thinks it’s funny. He doesn’t realize that historians will skewer him. He will never be taken seriously, even if he stays in office for eight years (god forbid). His lackeys and sick puppets will be writing the story of his presidency. It will be done by scholars and “real” journalists– not Fox News, not Sinclair media, not Dinesh D’Souza. They will accurately portray him as a man not in control of his faculties, in the darkest period of the American presidency.

Box Office: Ansel Elgort Steers “Baby Driver” Hit, Will Ferrell’s “House” Foreclosed, Nicole Kidman Beguiles

0

The weekend box office brought a winner in “Despicable Me 3.” The minions took in $75 million– less than predicted or hoped for, but not bad. The franchise lives on!

Will Ferrell’s “The House” clicked in $9 mil, probably less when the hard numbers come in tomorrow. It’s a write off for everyone. Enough said, at this point.

On the indie side, everything’s coming up roses. Sony has a hit with Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver.” They’ve already grossed $30 million in five days. Word of mouth is great. We thought Sony was waiting for “Spider Man” to save them, but Ansel Elgort did it first. When “Spider Man” opens on Friday, Sony will be sitting pretty.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman is rocking in Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled.” A very strong opening weekend in limited release should bring bigger receipts in weeks to come.

“The Big Sick” is booming– on just 71 screens– wait til it expands.

Even Roadside Attractions is doing ok with “Beatriz at Dinner”– over $4 million. For them, this is revelation!

If you haven’t seen these films– “Baby Driver,” “Beguiled,” “Big Sick,” “Beatriz”– the B movies!– get out there. They’re a nice surprise for summer!

Madonna’s Manager Defends Jay Z Against Claims of Anti-Semitism in New Song

0

I guess I’m lucky that Jay Z’s album has been offered so far just to his Tidal subscribers and people who have Sprint. Apparently in the rap “The Story of OJ,” Jay Z has some lyrics that are causing an uproar over anti-Semitism. I didn’t know this until I caught Guy Oseary’s defense of Jay Z on Instagram. Guy is the manager of Madonna and U2. He’s also very Jewish and very smart.

Here is his take on the situation– where I learn, as you will, too, the content of the song. On his Instagram account he’s getting some flack for this defense. This reminds me of Michael Jackson’s use of an epithet directed at Jews in “They Don’t Care About Us” twenty years ago. Personally, I don’t approve these messages. But here’s what Guy says:

Guy Oseary:

I’ve received a few messages from friends wondering why Jay-Z is putting out anti-semitic lyrics in his new song “The Story Of O.J.” … If you read the lyrics out of context I can understand why people are jumping to that conclusion.. But if you listen to the song in its entirety you will hear that the whole of the song is based on exaggerated stereotypes to make a point.. There are African American stereotypes throughout the song.. The music video directed by @markromanek and Jay is entirely full of exaggerated stereotype imagery of African Americans.. Jewish people do NOT “own all the property in America”. Jay knows this.. But hes attempting to use the jewish people in an exaggerated way to showcase a community of people that are thought to have made wise business decisions.. As an example of what is possible and achievable.. Yes, the “rich jew” the “business jew” the “jew that owns the world” is a stereotype which has been repeatedly used with the wrong sentiment.. meant only to harm the Jewish people. Perpetuating the absurdity that jews are taking over the world.. Fact: There are 7.5 billion people in the world.. Only 14 million of them are jews.. Thats 0.2 percent of the worlds population.. In my opinion, Jay is giving the jewish community a compliment.. ” Financial freedom” he mentions as being his ONLY hope.. If you had to pick a community as an example of making wise financial decisions achieving financial freedom who would you choose?.. Im not offended by these lyrics.. I hear them the way he inteded them to be heard.. Giving “credit” to a community that supposedly understands what it means to have “credit”.. I’m good with that.. 🙌🏽✡️

Box Office: “Despicable 3” Has $29Mil Friday, But Will Ferrell’s “House” is Not a Home

0

Friday box office: “Despicable Me 3” had a $29 million Friday. That’s off from the previous installment, but pretty damn good anyway. You can’t beat a $75 or $80 million weekend for an animated film. Plus the reviews are solid, so number 4 is already on the drawing board. Those Minions are not going away!

Will Ferrell’s “The House” did $3.5 million last. The Warner Bros. comedy gone bad will have an $8 million weekend. It’s basically a write off. Every once in a while Ferrell has a real turkey. Really, really bad stinker. This is going in the books with “Casa de Mi Padre,” another one no one saw.

How bad could “The House” be? The 15 rating on Rotten Tomatoes says it all. Why is it called “The House”? I know it takes place in a house that’s been converted to a casino, but why isn’t the word Casino in the title? Right now it sounds like either a horror film or The Money Pit. Soon to be seen on a plane. Can’t wait.

Adele Cancels Her Last Two Shows at Wembley Stadium Due to Vocal Problems: “I’ve maxed out on Steroids…I can’t crumble in front of you”

Adele has canceled the last two shows on her world, in her hometown of London at Wembley Stadium. Her voice is shot, and she’s mortified. Here’s her post:

Pop Charts: Imagine Dragons Use a $5.99 Amazon Discount to Tie for Number 1 with DJ Kahled

0

And the winner is? Everyone!

As Friday closed for business, the new number 1 album on the charts was either Imagine Dragons’ “Evolve” or DJ Khaled’s “Grateful.” It’s all how you look at it.

The Dragons sold around 107 CDs and downloads. But at Amazon.com, their download only cost $5.99– half price, basically. The DJ Khaled collection– far more interesting– sold around 47,000 CDs and downloads at the regular price.

Who wins that chart? I don’t know. You decide.

Then, according to hitsdailydouble.com, things get trickier. Combining all sales with streaming, the two albums tied at around 138,000 copies. But remember those discounted Dragons.

Neither album will be remembered in five or ten years, but we’re here now and we have to deal with this stuff.

Meanwhile, the Beatles sold 6,000 more box sets at $117.99 of the “Sgt Pepper” 50th edition.  Prince sold 30,000 copies of the 25th anniversary edition of “Purple Rain.”

Radiohead sold 16,000 copies of the “OK Computer” 20th edition. Wait! It’s been 20 years since I ran home to listen to “Karma Police” on my stereo? Wow! Time flies!

Also today, Lin-Manuel Mirando released the “Hamilton Instrumentals.” They have milked this thing to the nth degree.  What’s next? Oh you know they must have plenty more ideas. “Hamilton for Dummies”? “The Polka Version”? And “Hamilton on Ice” featuring Scott Hamilton can’t be far off!

“Spider Man: Homecoming” Director Jon Watts Confirms He’s Directing 2019 Sequel

0

EXCLUSIVE There are few things that are certain in life: birth, death, taxes, and sequels to hit movies.

As Sony prepares to launch “Spider Man: Homecoming” on July 7th to huge numbers, so begins the talk of the sequel.

At the premiere this week for “Homecoming” in Hollywood, director Jon Watts confirmed for me he will directing Part 2.

When does it start, I asked? “Tomorrow morning,” he replied. He said he didn’t know the exact direction Peter Parker would go in next time. But the “Homecoming” sequel will take place after “Avengers 4” and won’t be released until 2019– when Peter is 19 and his portrayer, Tom Holland, is 25.

When I caught up with Holland at the TCL aka Grauman’s Chinese Theater, his response to all this adulation was: “Livin’ the dream!”

For the “Spider Man: Homecoming” premiere seemingly millions of fans lined the street and got to see various Spider – men leaping and doing flips on top of the Audi A8’s, on Hollywood Boulevard. Robert Downey Jr, breezing through on the carpet was his suave, amiable self.  Tom Holland handled it all with treat aplomb: Just another Hollywood premiere with all the madness that comes along with it.
Sony CEO Tom Rothman introduced the film by paying tribute to Marvel’s grand poobah Stan Lee, whom he called, “the patriarch of it all. ”  Lee, who’s a miraculous 94 years old, left early. Michael Keaton and Robert Downey Jr. also skipped the after party but Marisa Tomei and Tom Holland  chatted with the film’s Producer Amy Pascal, Marvel’s Kevin Feige and CAA’s Bryan Lourd.
You could call “Homecoming” “Amy’s Revenge” as Pascal was forced out of the Sony executive suite only to return as a producer with the studio’s potentially biggest hit since “Skyfall.” That’s called really breaking that glass ceiling!
