Bruce Springsteen Excellent New Song for “Thank You for Your Service” Won’t Be Eligible for Oscar, But the Boss Could Perform it Anyway

0

Bruce Springsteen has so much time on his hands– five shows a week on Broadway. But still he found the time to record the closing song to Jason Hall’s movie “Thank You for Your Service,” which opens Friday.

The movie is excellent, by the way, and so is the song. The film stars Miles Teller and Beaulah Kole as two vets who are having trouble adjusting to life after tours of Iraq. Haley Bennett is Teller’s wife, and comedian Amy Schumer makes a terrific dramatic debut as the widow of another vet.

Hall adapted the screenplay for Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper.” And while the basic story is not new per se, Hall and his cast invest so much of themselves into that you really care for these characters. Teller does his best work. And Kole is a revelation.

Producer Jon Kilik asked Bruce Springsteen last year if he could contribute a song to the film. Then last Christmas Day, Springsteen emailed him “Freedom Cadence” as a surprise gift. It’s an adaptation of an traditional army chant, and of course, it’s spectacular. Ron Aniello co produced “Freedom Cadence,” and in the final mix Kilik got to add background vocals. At my press screening we didn’t know this in advance– but everyone sat until the song was over, it’s that good.

Springsteen will in all likelihood still be on Broadway on Sunday, March 3rd, but it’s still possible producers Mike deLuca and Jennifer Todd will ask him to perform “Freedom Cadence” on the show. Unfortunately, it’s not eligible for Best Song as the material already existed. But Bruce will probably get a Golden Globe and Critics Choice nod for the song, so maybe he’ll turn up there.

Just as he did with “Philadelphia” years ago, Bruce really captures the tone of “Thank You for Your Service” with “Freedom Cadence.” It’s too bad it’s not eligible for the Oscar because it really sums up the gravity and beauty of Hall’s message. Please see this movie, and wait for this great bit of dessert at the end.

RIP Songwriter George Young Hits Included “Friday on My Mind” and “Love is in the Air”

Australian songwriter George Young has died at age 71. His brothers formed AC/DC in 1973, and George wound up co-producing several of their albums.

But George Young’s really important credits including co-writing the Easybeats hit “Friday on My Mind” and John Paul Young’s hit “Love is in the Air.”

With co-writer and Easybeat partner Harry Vanda, George Young also had a band called Flash in the Pan. Their debut album yielded the hit “Hey St. Peter,” for which I have a particular affection.

RIP George. Thanks for everything.

Fox News Fires Jerusalem Correspondent John Huddy After His Sister, Juliet, Spills Beans on Network

0

John Huddy has been fired by Fox News. He was the Jerusalem correspondent since 2014. Last spring, Huddy expressed frustration that he was being ignored because his sister, Juliet, had won a $1.5 million settlement from Fox News for sexual harassment. Her complaint was against Bill O’Reilly.

Ironically, John and Juliet’s father, John Sr., had been a long time adviser to Roger Ailes, the now dead and disgraced architect of Fox News.

I knew Juliet from the time we each arrived at Fox News in 1998-1999. But like so many attractive female journalists, Huddy seemed to be doing well, then not so well, then was demoted or disappeared. The same thing happened to Laurie Dhue.

Juliet was demoted to local New York Fox 5, demoted even more, and faded. When the Ailes-O’Reilly scandals broke, Juliet turned out to be one of the women who’d received settlements. She left the network.

But in the interim her brother, John, a respected journalist, had signed up with Fox News. He was sent to Israel in 2014. But this past summer, after Juliet left with her $1.5 million, John appeared in a story on Radaronline.com saying he was worried the network wasn’t using him because of the settlement.

This morning Juliet appeared on former Fox anchor Megyn Kelly’s Today show hour and talked about what it was like at Fox News. “You’re one person about to go up against a machine.” Huddy said. “It is daunting and frightening. And it’s — it holds you back from taking action sometimes.”

Not long after, Mediaite reported that John Huddy had gotten the boot.

Fox News is just as bad as you’ve heard, probably worse these days. I don’t know how anyone can take them seriously. I was there for ten years. I should know.

Watch First Trailer for Daniel Day Lewis’s Bid for 4th Oscar From What Could Be Final Film

0

Daniel Day Lewis will go for a 4th Oscar from his final film, “Phantom Thread,” directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

The drama is inspired by 50s fashion designer Charles James, who was considered America’s “first couturier.” James was born in London but lived in the US. PTA’s movie is obviously not following James’s life exactly.

The trailer also indicates that Focus is going with this title– a strange one, sounds like a send up of “Star Wars.” The movie looks beautiful and dramatic, and a tad humorless. DDL says he’s retiring when this project is done. That’s the pity of the whole thing. I was really hoping to see him as a villain in a super hero movie. (NO, that’s a joke.)

Madonna Uses Four Year Old Adopted African Daughter to Promote Pricey Skin Care Line on Instagram

0

It’s supposed to be cute, but it’s not. On Instagram Madonna has posted a short video of Estere, one of the two girls she adopted from Malawi last year, being prodded to promote the singer’s MDNA Skincare line.

Madonna feeds the lines to Estere about using MDNA products, and it’s not so cute since even Estere doesn’t seem to know what the heck is going on. Does anyone use MDNA? And does Madonna, who often makes over $40 million a year, need more dough? Maybe, since her “Rebel Tour Live” CD-DVD has sold just seven thousand copies since its release a couple of weeks ago.

PS MDNA Skin is only available in the US at Barneys. Five ounces of the Rose Mist costs $120. One point seven ounces of the Rejuvenator is $600. One half of an ounce of the eye stuff is $180. It’s not available in Malawi.

Justin Timberlake Confirms Super Bowl Half Time Show…with Jimmy Fallon…and Janet Jackson?

0

Justin Timberlake has confirmed on Twitter that he’ll be performing at the Super Bowl next February in Minnesota. His post is with Jimmy Fallon, whom I’ve told you several times would be involved. But now I’m hearing that Janet Jackson will also be a surprise guest.

Timberlake and Jackson were unfortunately involved in “Nipplegate” several years ago at the Super Bowl. Well, it was all ridiculous. And now time has passed since the 2004 “wardrobe malfunction.” Cooler heads prevail. Everyone loves Janet, and what a coup it would be to see them back on the Super Bowl sending up their prior “scandal”!

The Fallon involvement comes because the NFL season finale is on NBC, home of the Tonight Show– which can use the synergy and ratings. Timberlake and Fallon together are magic. Jackson will just add to the good feeling and excitement. Maybe she can choreograph a dance with all knees!

I’m happy because “Can’t Stop the Feeling” is the catchiest song of the last two years. It should be a show stopper with all these people involved!

Weekend Box Office Bombs for Gerard Butler, Michael Fassbender, Josh Brolin

0

More bombs at the box office this weekend than in World War II at Normandy:

“Geostorm” with Gerard Butler failed to clear $14 million in wide release with $13.3 million. This thing cost around $150 million.

Sony’s “Only the Brave” with a lot of fine actors includung Josh Brolin made $6.1 million. It cost $40 million, give or take.

“The Snowman” melted with just $3.42 million. Cost: $35-$40 million.

So interesting that “Wonder Woman” was such a hit this summer, yet no one cares about Wonder Woman’s origins. “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” is dead on arrival. So is Andy Serkis’s “Breathe” (which should have been strangled).

Meanwhile, “Marshall” fell by 50% from last week. “Mark Felt” is not being felt by anyone. And “Wonderstruck,” a critics’ favorite, has the audience turning a deaf ear.

Good news for “The Florida Project,” which is finding a deserved audience. And Tyler Perry, despite his new Madea Halloween movie “Boo” being dreadful, scored $21 million and finished in first place.

I’m happy to say that “Victoria and Abdul” is surviving this bad period nicely. They picked up another $2 million over the weekend. It’s just a lovely real movie. Go see it. Judi Dench should never be ignored.

PS My friends at Annapurna are having severe marketing problems. “Detroit” just collapsed this summer. “Brad’s Status” stiffed and is gone. “Marston” is as good as gone. Good movies, but no good reach out. No campaigns. They can fix that. They must.

Hollywood Ending: Big Studios Cutting Losses This Weekend, Pulling Flops From Theaters Earlier Than Usual

0

It’s a bizarre season in Hollywood. Almost nothing is “working,” and the studios can’t afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. They’re pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.

This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on “Blade Runner” after three tough weeks. They’ve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful film by 855. So far, “Blade Runner” has made just $66 million.  Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.

Warner’s isn’t alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruise’s  “American Made” from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews haven’t helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasn’t available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after “The Mummy” and other flops. With both studios, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The biggest decease (de-crease, but pun intended here) is for the revived “Flatliners.” With just $16 million in the till, Sony would be better off paying people to see this turkey. They’re retreating from 1,433 theaters this weekend, leaving “Flatliners” to breathe on its own. It will be completely dead by Sunday.

Also just about dead is the much praised “Battle of the Sexes,” Fox Searchlight couldn’t get anyone to go see it despite great reviews and excellent marketing. I’m actually dumbfounded that it’s made just $11 million. FS is killing off 849 screens. Ouch! And “Battle” was supposed to yield some awards action.

Warner’s, meantime, is facing more trouble than the other studios. Their “Geostorm” is going to be a disaster this weekend. And their “Lego Ninja” movie is leaving 951 theaters after $52 million and five weeks. Better to get out while they can.

And over all this weekend doesn’t look too promising for new films. “Geostorm” should be joined by “The Snowman” and in the kill bin by Sunday.

Here’s to better days– and soon!

PS Here’s an irony: The Weinstein Company’s “Wind River” is at $33 million. It cost around $15 million. Taylor Sheridan’s directing debut might have been an awards contender if certain things hadn’t happened.

Bruce Springsteen Broadway Show Born to Run Through June and Tony Awards at $2 Mil Per Week

0

Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway show is born to run– til June, if it must.

That’s the best way for Bruce to ensure active participation in the Tony Awards. The cut off for eligibility is May 1.

Well, why not? “Springsteen on Broadway” will rake in an average of $2 million per week. It’s a great night and it’s also a good set– two hours, and songs Bruce can do in his sleep. (Not to say every show isn’t new and fresh.)

The original run was a short one, then extended to February 3rd. If Bruce leaves then he will be out of sight, out of mind for Tony voters. If he can make it through May 1st, he’s guaranteed at least a special award if not more.

In the end there will also be a CD once the show closes and most likely an HBO taping. Tony, Grammy, Emmy. Twenty or thirty million dollars. Doesn’t sound too bad. And even with an extension, “SOB”will sell out every night!

PS This show is a producer’s dream– no real overhead except for security. No costumes, no real set, some lighting.

Taylor Swift Releases Catchy New Single, “Gorgeous,” from Upcoming Album– Which Ex Is This One About?

0

Taylor Swift’s whole career is now one take after another on “You’re So Vain.” Her new single, “Gorgeous,” is very catchy. But for the umpteenth time it’s a guessing game about a former boyfriend. Which one? Do I care? She’s capable of writing more interesting songs, no? She’s totally succumbed to Max Martin’s songwriting factory with Shellback producing. She was right a few weeks ago when she sang that Taylor Swift is dead. She’s been replaced by robots.
