Colin Kroll, Co-Creator of HQ Trivia, and Vine, Dead at 34 from Apparent Drug Overdose

0

A year ago, HQ Trivia was so hot you couldn’t get near it. Everywhere I went people were downloading the app and playing the trivia game at 3 and 9pm. People were obsessed with it, especially in New York. And the most anyone won was a few dollars. It didn’t matter. Hundreds of thousands of people were playing the game.

This morning, reportedly, Colin Kroll, the 34 year old co-founder, was found dead in his apartment. He allegedly died of a drug overdose, which also sounds like a suicide. This is tragic and shocking. He had also been the creator of Vine, the popular video social media that set the stage for Instagram and other services. Vine is gone, but it was a landmark.

This comes on the heels of “SNL” star Pete Davidson posting a suicidal note yesterday on Twitter. The result was pandemonium and a NYPD investigation. But Davidson did appear on the show briefly last night. What happens next, no one knows.

There were so many celebrity suicides this year, including Kate Spade. What is going on? There is so much help available. Too many talented people are taking their lives after rocketing to success. Please call

Peter Jackson’s First Produced Non-Hobbit Movie “Mortal Engines” Sinks Like a Stone with Just $7.5 Mil Weekend

0

Peter Jackson. Remember him? We love Peter Jackson. He made billions with “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” series.

But this weekend has not been so good for Pete. The first non-Hobbit movie he’s produced in eons, “Mortal Engines,” is a dud. It sank like a stone at the box office with just $7.5 million for the whole weekend. The budget is listed as $100 million on boxofficemojo.com, but you can always add 20% to those figures.

Universal released “Mortal Engines” without much fanfare. It has no American name actors, so there wasn’t much to promote. Jackson only produced “Mortal Engines.” The first time director, Christian Rivers, has worked for Jackson for years, apparently. But since Peter and Fran Walsh created the project, we can assume they had as much if not more than Rivers to do with making the film.

Just goes to show that even “lords” are mortal!

Alec Baldwin’s Good and Bad Night: ABC Talk Show Sank to Under 1 Mil Viewers, But “SNL” Had Season High Ratings

0

It was a good night and a bad night for Alec Baldwin. His attempt to become ubiquitous on TV met with mixed results.

Alec’s talk show sank to under a million viewers, to 983K, last night. I think his guests were Kerry Washington and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. No one knows because no one watched. Earlier in the week, Alec hosted the Robert F. Kennedy dinner in New York, so you know, it’s not like the interview was considered journalism. Is anyone running ABC? Just asking.

Over on “SNL,” Alec — who is still awaiting a trial for allegedly punching a guy over a parking spot– opened the show as Donald Trump. The parody of “It’s a Wonderful Life” also featured host Matt Damon, Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro (who may all have been at the RFK dinner). It was very funny.  I’ll add the ratings, but they were probably a little higher thanks to the Pete Davidson suicide drama yesterday. (More on that in another post.)

They were: 4.8 million, a season high for “SNL” so far.

Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” Makes $17.2 Mil Without Much Promotion– Will Academy Reward Him with Nominations?

0

Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” made $17.2 million over the weekend with almost no promotion. Will the Academy reward him with nominations? Let’s hope so.

“The Mule” deserves nominations for Best Actor, Picture, Director, Supporting Actress (Dianne Wiest), and Screenplay– at the very least. But Eastwood missed all the early awards groups by turning in his movie at the last minute. So it has no awards momentum. There’s a list of films to choose from, and that’s what’s going on now.

But “The Mule” not only has generated very good reviews, it’s now made money. It did better than its multiple, meaning word of mouth grew after Friday’s opening at $5.7 million. Indeed, the $17.2 million estimate may be low– it could be a total of $18 million when Sunday is fully adjusted.

Clint’s performance alone is worth the price of admission to “The Mule.” He is one sly fox. He’s very funny, self-effacing, and a little meta. But the underpinning of the movie is the sorrow his Earl carries for never being able to live up to his family’s needs. And that sorrow is beautifully expressed in Wiest, who has a scene toward the end that is heartbreaking. I hope the members of the Academy really see this film before Ballots go out in mid January.

Quincy Jones Knew “Green Book” Pianist Don Shirley, Thanks Filmmakers for “Making a Truly Special Film”

0

by Leah Sydney Music royalty Quincy Jones, 85, well knows about the triumphs and hardships of being a black man in the music business throughout some tumultuous times.  “Q” as his pals call him, held court this week at Ysabel in West Hollywood to celebrate director/writer Peter Farrelly’s crowd and critic pleasing “Green Book,” for a room filled with adoring awards voters as well as co-star Mahershala Ali and the mega talented composer of the film Kris Bowers.

Based on the true story of an Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx Tony Lip, (Viggo Mortenson) who is hired to drive a world class Black Pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) on a concert tour from Manhattan to the deep South.  Throughout this often perilous journey they encounter racism and frightening danger.  The result is that the duo forged a life long friendship filled with humor  and humanity.

Quincy explained why “Green Book,” hits so close to home for him.  “I had the pleasure of being acquainted with Don Shirley while I was working as an arranger in New York in the 50’s and he was without question one of America’s greatest pianists…as skilled a musician as Leonard Bernstein or Van Cliburn. So it’s wonderful that his story is finally being told and celebrated.   I did that “chitlin’ circuit” tour through the south when I was with the Lionel Hampton band, and let me tell you…it was no picnic.  And we were a band.”

Quincy continued: “I can’t imagine what it would have been like to do it alone with just a driver.  So Peter, thank you for telling this story of our country’s not so distant history, and capturing on film the ties that can bind us when we spend time listening, talking and living with one another. “Green Book” is a truly special film about friendship and the power of music to bring people together. Mahershala, you did an absolutely fantastic job playing him, and I think yours and Viggo’s performances will go down as one of the great friendships captured on film.”

King Quincy is right on of course.  Watch for “Green Book,” to keep the cavalcade of awards this spectacular film has already garnered  coming and rightly so.

Box Office: “Aquaman” Has $200 Mil Already Without US Release, Animated Spider Man Looks at $30 Mil Weekend

0

Warner Bros. was very smart with “Aquaman.” Still not open in the U.S., the DC Universe underwater extravaganza will cross $200 million this weekend– and it’s not even open in the United States.

Rather than risk another box office disaster with a DC Comics movie, WB went the international route. They’ve cleaned up in China and a few other exotic locales before submerging into domestic waters.

“Aquaman” has a tepid 70% on Rotten Tomatoes– initial exultations calmed down quite a bit. So releasing away from snarky Americans was a good idea. Now they can roll into our theaters next week and not worry about what anyone thinks.

Meanwhile, Sony is scoring a $30 mi plus weekend with “Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse.” That’s good because the total budget is $100 million, they have a ways to go. But it’s all going to have a happy ending. This will balance out the sting of Hugh Jackman’s Jason Reitman-directed “The Front Runner” which is dying with $2 mil in receipts no awards action at all. Sony hasn’t had a great year, but Spidey helps.

Ratings UPDATE: Rachel Maddow-Lawrence O’Donnell OWN Hannity-Ingraham for a Second Week

0

I wrote a couple of days ago how Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell’s fierce two hours on MSNBC beat Fox News’s utterly incoherent Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham all last week and this past Monday and Tuesday.

Ratings are now in for Wednesday, the Dynamic Duo did it again. Maddow is eating Hannity’s lunch with 3.4 million viewers, over 300K better than the unofficial Trump spokesperson. O’Donnell takes Ingraham by more than 100K on Wednesday night. They will take their second week in a row from the Fox News comedies by delivering serious, intelligent stories and observations that are contemporary with the day’s news.

Fox News is losing because it’s just burying its head in the sand. Last night I heard Hannity say “Hillary Clinton” and I just turned it off. They are concentrating on immigration fear and other nonsense while Maddow-O’Donnell are focusing on Michael Cohen and the clear threat to Donald Trump’s presidency. If Trump is only watching Fox News, he WILL wind up forced out of office. It’s time he opened his eyes. Maddow is foretelling his future.

Watch the Teaser Trailer for the “Downton Abbey” Movie– With Theme Music Lushly Re-orchestrated

0
The teaser trailer for the “Downton Abbey” movie is out today. The theme music has been lushly re-orchestrated into a score for movies. Everything looks great, and just seeing it and hearing it all is a pretty nice holiday gift. If you’re missing the cast, of course, Michelle Dockery has a few things out right now. Jeremy Swift has a good comic supporting role in “Mary Poppins Returns.” Brendan Coyle plays the Earl of Lennox in “Mary, Queen of Scots.” Jo Froggat is everywhere. Hugh Bonneville has the terrific “Paddington” movies. Elizabeth McGovern is in “The Wife” with Glenn Close. Allen Leech has a starring role in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” And so on. The only thing I know about the movie is that it picks up eight months after the series ended. And Lily James, who played cousin Rose who moved to America, isn’t in it. Also, it’s a one shot deal, so in all likelihood Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess’s death will be the big dramatic device, but no one has told me that, it’s just a good guess. Can’t wait til next fall!

One Direction’s Zayn Malik Releases Somber 27 Track “Icarus Falls” and Flies to Number 3 on iTunes

0

Zayn Malik has already had a weird year. He released six new singles, and all of them failed. Spectacularly.

Now the former One Direction star has included the half dozen tries on a new, somber 27 track album called “Icarus Falls.” Zayn, you see, has flown too close to the sun with One Direction and as solo act. He had a hit album in 2016 called “Mind of Mine.” He had a hit single called “Pillowtalk.” He had an even bigger hit last year on a duet with Taylor Swift from a “50 Shades of Grey” Movie. He has had a hit girlfriend, model Gigi Hadid. (That hit may have fallen off the charts.)

So he thinks he has a lot to prove with “Icarus Falls.” The digital version has arrived at number 3 on iTunes this morning, blocked from number 1 by a country album and by Bruce Springsteen’s Broadway soundtrack. He’s already released three more tracks from the album, bringing the number of advance singles, promo or otherwise, to 9 out of the 27. Well, that still leaves 16. And that’s a lot.

Early listenings bring this conclusion: “Icarus” is mopey. Zayn is not a dance guy. The tracks are mostly spare, low key efforts. Some are very catchy. I like “Common” and “Imprint” right off the bat. (He doesn’t like long titles.) One of the current 3 singles, “Good Years,” is about his career so far and is written by Herbie Critchlow,  who gave the Backstreet Boys some of their best songs. It’s worth several spins as it sets in. “Sour Diesel,” from that group of 6, I always liked. “I Don’t Mind” and “You Wish You Knew” have potential. Maybe “Rainberry” can become a flavor at Pinkberry.

I root for Zayn. In person, he’s a lovely, shy guy. He’s very earnest and serious. He wants us to take him seriously. I wish “Icarus Falls” had a little humor, or something totally frivolous. But this is what we’ve got. And damn it, we’re going to like it.

RIP Great Jazz and R&B Singer Nancy Wilson, 81, Winner of Three Grammy Awards

0

The great song stylist Nancy Wilson has died at age 81. Nancy Wilson was not a big chart hit maker. But she was a lovely singer who was widely respected in the jazz world. She moved into R&B and was a popular and sought after performer on TV and on Broadway. She won three Grammy awards, and hosted her own TV variety show in the mid 60s. I would liken her to singers such as Dianne Reeves, or even Norah Jones. She’s been out of the spotlight for a few years. But I expect a Renaissance today as she was a “singer’s singer.” Condolences to her family. One of the greats.
