Woody Allen’s Delayed “Rainy Day in New York” Set for Opening in 16 Countries, Beginning End of This Month

The world wants to see more Woody Allen movies, kids.

“A Rainy Day in New York,” delayed by a $68 million lawsuit against Amazon, starts rolling out internationally in 10 days, 16 countries.

First stop is Poland on July 26th, then Lithuania on August 2nd. Coming right after that are Greece, Netherlands, Turkey, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain and Italy among others.

Only the US and UK aren’t settled yet, but they should be soon. “Rainy Day” stars Timothee Chalamet, Jude Law, Elle Fanning, and Rebecca Hall. Hall as so far been supportive of Woody, they worked together famously on “Vicki Cristina Barcelona.” My guess is the others will wait to see what the reviews are before deciding if they want to support Woody, too.

Allen is currently shooting a new film in Spain starring Christoph Waltz, Gina Gershon, Wally Shawn, and Louis Garrell.

PS Let’s hope they show “Rainy Day” in Toronto, at least for the press.

End of An Era: Grammys Will Get New Exec Producer Beginning 2021 as Ken Ehrlich Winds Up 40 Year Run in 2020

It’s the end of an era at the Grammy awards. Executive producer Ken Ehrlich will wind up his 40 year run with the show this January. Beginning in 2021, the EP will be Ben Winston, who has also been EP for James Corden’s late night talk show.

Ehrlich’s retirement was expected, as the Grammys and NARAS are going through a big change this year. Neil Portnow is stepping down from running the whole organization next month. Deborah Dugan of the organization (RED) is succeeding him.

Ehrlich worked for the famous producer Pierre Cossette for years, eventually taking over and forming his own company, AEG/Erhlich Productions. He is indefatigable when it comes to batting home runs, one after another. This past winter he not only produced the Emmy-nominated Grammy show but also CBS specials honoring Aretha Franklin and Motown.

Winston is a six-time Emmy Award winner and a 22-time nominee, he has produced a multitude of shows including “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” co-created “Carpool Karaoke,” and “Drop The Mic” and has produced many music specials for artists such as Bruno Mars, Sam Smith, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber to name a few.

Winston will face the ever growing challenge of bringing ratings to the Grammys while sticking with actual talent. Ironically, Ehrlich’s last show will likely be all about Lil Nas X, “Old Town Road,” and maybe getting an Album of the Year award for Bruce Springsteen. That would be his crowning glory.

Beyonce Shocker Here: Parts Ways with Music Advisor

WEDS AM UPDATE: Beyonce debuted the video for “Spirit” last night on ABC. The video already has 2 million views on YouTube. So does the original video. That’s a total of 4 million. But the single itself has moved up to number 35. It’s interesting that it took the video to ignite fan response. The song on its own was DOA. I am assured however that there are “many singles” on the new “Lion King: The Gift” album coming on Friday.

 

TUES NIGHT: Last week, it was all “Spirit” for Beyonce. She released a new song and a video from the upcoming new “Lion King.” All signs pointed to a hit because of her huge following.

But this week, there is no “Spirit” for the record, which topped out at number 3 on the iTunes chart and is now at 66.

Elsewhere, “Spirit” is invisible. It’s not on any Spotify streaming charts. On AppleMusic, “Spirit” isn’t on the USA top 50. It appears at number 92 on the Global Streaming chart for Apple Music.

Granted, “The Lion King” soundtrack is number 2 or 3 on iTunes. Fans are getting “Spirit” as part of the album.It also appears on an album Beyonce “curated” coming this Friday called “The Lion King: The Gift” coming on her Parkwood Records.

But as a single, it’s a non-starter. Fans would much rather hear Beyonce sing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” with Donald Glover, Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner.

Why? Because like some Beyonce songs, “Spirit” isn’t a song. It has no chorus, no lyrics that anyone understands. If you look at most of Beyonce’s records, they are not singable. “Single Ladies” is one of the very few. “Crazy in Love” is constructed from the Chi Lites’ “Are You My Woman?”

But Beyonce can be happy she received 6 Emmy nominations today for her homemade documentary, “Homecoming.”  That’s quite an accomplishment itself.

One big snub from the Emmys today: no nominations for “The Conners.”

The spin off of “Roseanne” features Oscar nominee and Tony winner Laurie Metcalf, and Emmy winner/Golden Globe winner John Goodman. (How John Goodman doesn’t have an Oscar is beyond me.)

But the show got nothing and neither did its actors. Eleven episodes of strong writing and directing were also shunned.

When the show came back in 2018 as “Roseanne” but imploded, Metcalf was nominated and the show got an editing nod. But this year, nothing for nobody.  Of course, Roseanne’s toxicity may have extended to “The Conners.” It’s sad if so, to punish the people left behind.

Oh well, last year before the Emmy nominations were announced, Goodman told a TMZ video guy who caught him at a gas station that he didn’t care about the Emmys anyway. He was nominated many times as Dan Conner in the old days, and never won.

Sacha Baron Cohen won 3 Emmy noms for his Showtime series from last summer, “Who is America?” He then thanked Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin among others on Twitter. Cohen did pretty well as Showtime got almost no other nominations except for “Escape at Dannemora.”

He writes: “While I am flattered at these nods, it is a shame that my co-stars were not recognized. Particularly Dick Cheney, who I had hoped would come across on camera as someone who’d gleefully sent hundreds of thousands to their pointless death – and boy did he deliver.”

Emmys: HBO Regains Lead in Nominations Over Netflix, 137-117, with “Game of Thrones,” “Veep,” “Barry,” “Succession”

HBO toppled Netflix today with the most Emmy nominations.

The cable service took a record 137 nominations with shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Veep,” “Succession,” and “Barry.”

Netflix came in second with 117. Netflix would have had more but their “Grace and Frankie” wasn’t included. Instead they at least picked up acting nominations for Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin in “The Kominsky Method.”

HBO is in the middle a huge seachange. But their seniorest VP of Publicity, Nancy Lesser, pulled off a coup amid all the chaos. She deserves the thanks of the new HBO execs.

The “Veep” nominations are particularly impressive since the show took a big break, and now it’s over.

Next year, HBO will have “Big Little Lies,””Euphoria,” and many other new shows as well as “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” The party isn’t over yet!

Amazon keeps its toe in the game with “Mrs. Maisel.”

The Emmy nominations are here, and so are the snubs.

Both Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers are routinely excluded from the Emmys. Do the Emmys hate Lorne Michaels? They do give nods to “SNL.” But these two guys are out in the cold again, and it’s so wrong.

Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and their Netflix show “Grace and Frankie” got nada.

Showtime received almost nothing except for “Escape at Dannemora.” The Emmys don’t even acknowledge the existence of “Billions,” a favorite show with an all star cast. Showtime is also almost non existent. Sad!

Also, I’m kind of shocked that Tracee Ellis Ross wasn’t nominated for “Blackish.” She should be top of the heap. The result is six white women, no color. Not very imaginative. Tracee rocks!

Julia Roberts didn’t make the cut for her series, “Homecoming.”

Also completely shut out after years of winning massive numbers of awards: “Modern Family.” Plus ABC’s second season of “The Conners” garnered nothing for the show or its actors.

Sharon Osbourne Reveals Why Ozzy Wasn’t at Grammy Lifetime Achievement Concert to Induct Black Sabbath

In a really terrific and candid interview with Larry LeBlanc, Sharon Osbourne has revealed hubby Ozzy was the only member of Black Sabbath to skip the Grammy Lifetime Achievement concert this past May in Los Angeles.

Ozzy wasn’t alone. Julio Iglesias also didn’t show up, and it was for the same reason. In February, on the actual Grammy show, the Lifetime Achievement winners were basically ignored. They had to pay their own expenses, got no attention Grammy weekend, and were allowed to wave from the audience on the Grammy broadcast.

In exchange, there was the taping of the PBS broadcast in May, which will air sometime this fall (no one knows when). Many showed up and performed including Sam Moore, Valerie Simpson, and Dionne Warwick. But there was no reception, no red carpet, no dinner after the show.

The other members of Black Sabbath showed up, but Ozzy and Sharon skipped the proceedings entirely– and it was just at Hollywood and Highland, a stone’s throw from their house.

Here’s what Sharon told Larry:

“…they wanted to give it (the Lifetime Achievement award) to them in some pissy fucking ceremony that they had. Listen there were artists there (George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Sam and Dave, Dionne Warwick, Julio Iglesias* Donny Hathaway*, and Billy Eckstine*) that got awards that deserved it too. But I just thought because Sabbath– their career spanned 50 years and they are still selling records today–their catalog still sells and their last record that was out 6 years ago was #1 in many countries worldwide–so the other artists they were honoring had great careers and deserved to be honored but they still didn’t have the careers that Sabbath had. So not to put them on the proper (TV) show, it was like, “How dare you?” I was so angry. I just thought, “Fuck you. I am not going to give you the honor of having Ozzy at your shitty ceremony.”

Fans of “The Talk” know that Sharon tells like it is. The Grammys have a funny relationship to older artists. Now I’m hearing talk of potential Album of the Year nominees, as the Grammy deadline is drawing closer (September 30th). I’m not seeing Bruce Springsteen’s “Western Stars,” which means they’re thinking of sticking him in Best Pop, or Traditional, instead of in the main album category where he belongs. “Western Stars” should be Album of the Year, period.
