More Cancellations: Carly Simon All Star Tribute Charity Show at Carnegie Hall for Underserved Students Postponed til Fall

0

The Carly Simon show set for March 19th will be rescheduled for fall. Michael Dorf of City Winery writes:

Due to the Coronavirus spread, Carnegie Hall has prudently cancelled all shows for the rest of March.  We are working to reschedule the Music of Carly Simon for sometime this Fall.  Not only Carly herself, but many of the artists are first disappointed, but also very encouraged to settle on the new date and have this special tribute.

Meanwhile, this being a fundraiser supporting non-profit organizations all providing critical funds for underserved youth, we hope you all can help by either: A) simply transferring your tickets to the new date when that becomes clear and/or B) consider donating one, two or a portion of your tickets to the cause.  We divide up the net proceeds of this event between the following organizations:  Little Kids Rock, Grammy in the Schools, Young Audiences, Church Street, The Orchestra Now, Center for Arts Education, D’Addario Foundation, Sonic Arts for All, VHI Save the Music, and Jazz House Kids.

We very much hope you will not request a full refund at this time, but either come to our future date, and/or consider donating one or all of your tickets to these important organizations.  However, if you must have a refund, please send us a note at……….Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. We will get thru this

More Cancellations: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony in Cleveland is Scrapped, Whitney Houston’s Hologram Will Have to Go Elsewhere

0

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has cancelled its induction ceremony in Cleveland set for May 2nd.

This means that Whitney Houston’s hologram or ghost or whatever will be out of a job.

Other inductees include T. Rex– Marc Bolan is dead anyway. Plus Nine Inch Nails, The Doobie Brothers, Depeche Mode, Notorious BIG is also off the hook.

The Dave Matthews Band and Pat Benatar, who were snubbed even though they got the most votes in the online voting, won’t have to worry about it.

No date was announced for a re-schedule.

Broadway Closing Until April 13th Throws Tony Award Season Into Jeopardy with Some Shows Finished

0

The 2020 Tony Award season is now in jeopardy of being cancelled. There will be no performances until April 13th.

Tonight’s premiere of the British hit, “Six,” is cancelled. Sunday’s opening “The Minutes” is not only over, but the show will likely fold completely. UPDATE: I’m told “The Minutes” will indeed open right after the ban lifts.

Coming in are a dozen new shows for the Tonys including the acclaimed new version of “Company” and Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker in “Plaza Suite.”

Older shows like “Phantom of the Opera” and “Book of Mormon” may not survive the hiatus.

And it’s not just the shows. There are the actors, crews, etc all of a sudden out of work and out of pocket.

Even more concerning will be the businesses around the theater district, from the restaurants to the pizza places, diners, and small shops. Of course, the hotels will suffer as well.

More announcements are coming.

But the biggest problem will be the Tony Awards themselves. Without new shows, the June 7th broadcast on CBS could be cancelled. I hope they will re-think it, and present a show of great Broadway performances anyway.

Broadway Will Shut Down Starting Tonight, New York Will Ban Gatherings Over 500 People

0

Well, that’s it: Broadway theatres will go dark beginning 5 PM, March 12th, today. So much for the premiere of “Six.” Henry the 8th’s wives will have to delay their opening.

The announcement comes as venues and performing arts organizations around New York City and the country have announced closures of their own amid rising concerns about the global coronavirus pandemic. New York’s museums are shutting down, too.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a press conference that no gatherings of more than 500 people will be allowed, excepting schools, hospitals, mass transit, and nursing homes. That ban will be effective beginning 5 PM, March 13.

For gatherings under 500, the seating capacity will be cut in half.

CBS Moves Upfronts to Digital, Cancels Events, Other Networks to Follow; Broadway Considering Shutdown

0

CBS will move its advertising upfront presentations to online and digital for May 13th. No events in New York. The other networks will announce same shortly.

What does this mean for upfronts, which are expensive gatherings in New York? If the networks find they can do all of this digitally and not spend millions, that could be trouble for the future.

A+E Networks, AMC Networks and Fox have already cancelled their live presentations.

“We’ll miss Carnegie Hall and our agency dinners this year, but the health and safety of our clients and the ViacomCBS team comes first,” said Jo Ann Ross, President and Chief Advertising Revenue Officer, ViacomCBS Domestic Advertising Sales. “Our team has been planning for this possibility for weeks, and we have devised a digital showcase to unveil all of the premium content that we’re delivering throughout the company, from CBS Television Network and our robust cable portfolio across the Entertainment & Youth and Premium brands. We won’t miss a beat in engaging with clients around our unmatched offerings and solutions.”

Elsewhere, Broadway is on the brink of shutting down for at least a couple of weeks. Hold on for news.

NY’s Metropolitan Museum to Close for Cleaning, No Re-Open Date Yet, Can Met Gala Be Far Behind?

0

Fifth Avenue’s famed Metropolitan Museum of Art is shutting down starting tomorrow for a deep clean. It’s unclear when it will re-open. But this news does put Anna Wintour’s Met Ball on May 4th in jeopardy, particularly if the Museum doesn’t open again right away. Other museums may follow suit, we’ll watch for announcements.

Press release:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today that it will temporarily close all three locations—The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters—starting tomorrow, March 13, to support New York City’s effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. The Museum will undertake a thorough cleaning and plans to announce next steps early next week.

Daniel H. Weiss, President and CEO of the Museum, stated: “The Met’s priority is to protect and support our staff, volunteers, and visitors, and we have been taking several proactive precautionary measures, including discouraging travel to affected areas, implementing rigorous cleaning routines, and staying in close communication with New York City health officials and the Centers for Disease Control. While we don’t have any confirmed cases connected to the Museum, we believe that we must do all that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our community, which at this time calls for us to minimize gatherings while maintaining the cleanest environment possible. We look forward to soon announcing when we’ll be able to welcome our staff and visitors back to the Museum.”

The Museum has been preparing for this possibility for several weeks, and has developed an operational plan that is now being put in place, which includes provisions to support salaried and hourly staff.

Not Cancelled: Netflix Still Plans Hollywood Press Junket this Weekend for “Uncorked” Comedy Since it’s On “TV” Anyway

0

Netflix has returned to not answering emails about movies because it’s not Oscar season.

I am told that their press junket for “Uncorked” starring Mamoudou Athie, Courteney B. Vance, and Niecy Nash is still set for this weekend in Los Angeles. Damn that virus! But why not? Prentice Penny’s feature debut isn’t going to theaters. We can stay home and watch it!

Press is still being flown in and staying at the Four Seasons Hotel. Good times!

The film is about a man who must balance his dream of becoming a master sommelier with his father’s expectation that he carry on the family’s barbecue business. And barbecue is mostly done outside, so that’s safe!

Netflix and all the streamers are sitting pretty today, as studios are moving and cancelling movies. But my guess is when this is over, people will want to get out of the house and into theaters again ASAP!

Universal Postpones Blockbuster “F9– Fast and Furious 9” from Next Month to Next Year Over Virus Panic

0

Isn’t F7 delete on the keyboard?

Well, “F9” has now been deleted until next year. Universal has cancelled plans to release “Fast and Furious 9” until next spring, April 2, 2021. It was supposed to open on May 22nd.

This is just the latest in a series of movie cancellations for this spring. “F9” would have been a blockbuster, but not if no one can go in the theaters.

Vin Diesel and crew will have to roll elsewhere for the time being.

Cher Cancels Tour With Nile Rodgers After Playing Same Venue as NBA Player Who Tested Positive for Virus

0

Cher’s current tour has been cancelled. Nile Rodgers, whose band was the opening act, just Tweeted the news. The tour had just played the same venue where Utah Jazz basketball player Rudy Gobert tested positive, in Oklahoma City. More tours will fall like dominoes now. Cher also Tweeted, as you can see below.

Cancelled: Paramount’s Much Needed John Krasinski Hit “A Quiet Place Part 2,” Comedy “Lovebirds” Postponed Indefinitely, Adding to Viacom Stock Price Woes

0

update 12:33pm Paramount has also postponed indefinitely “Lovebirds,” with Tiffany Haddish and Kumail Nanjiani. Their press junket was going to be this weekend for a March 27th opening.

THIS is trouble.

Paramount has postponed “A Quiet Place, Part 2” indefinitely because of the virus panic. The sequel to the hit horror film was supposed to open on March 20th. I’ve seen it, it’s terrific, at least as good as the first one. The premiere audience this past Sunday went crazy for it.

But fear — which is the subject of the movie — has sent people running out of movie theaters. With this one gone, and the James Bond movie — there is no spring box office. Unlike James Bond, which was rescheduled for the fall, “A Quiet Place, Part 2” has not been rescheduled. Paramount has been waiting for this film, they’ve had no hits and really need it. And all the money has been spent on promotion.

A bigger problem for Paramount is that their parent company, ViacomCBS, is in trouble. Viacom is fueled by Sumner Redstone’s National Amusements. (Yes, he’s still alive, will turn 97 in May.) Their stock price has crashed in the last month. They recently announced they were going to stupidly sell publisher Simon & Schuster after decades. This news won’t help.
