Happy 79th Birthday, Bob Dylan: Flashback to a Rare 1969 Gospel Album of Dylan Songs Featuring the Great Merry Clayton

0

It’s Bob Dylan’s 79th birthday. We’re celebrating, of course, but also anticipating his new album in a couple of weeks.

So for Bob’s birthday I thought we’d go back to 1969 to a little known album called “Dylan’s Gospel.” The great Lou Adler produced it for his then new Ode Records. Within two years, Ode would take off with Carole King, and Cheech and Chong, among others.

For “Dylan’s Gospel,” an album of Dylan covers, Adler brought in some stunning singers including Merry Clayton (the Rolling Stones, Carole King) and Gloria Jones– the very same Gloria Jones who had a soul hit in the UK with “Tainted Love,” a song Soft Cell would cover in 1979 and turn into a new whole new hit again.

The group called themselves “The Brothers and the Sisters.” There were so many terrific singers including Clydie King, Edna Wright, and so on. All the names are on Wikipedia.

I’m putting the Spotify embed below, and a promotional documentary. But first, Merry Clayton singing “The Mighty Quinn,” which had been a Dylan cover hit for Manfred Mann. Merry, a superstar, makes this a candidate for best track on the album. Merry, out on the West Coast, we salute you as always.

Dylan wasn’t into gospel in 1969. But ten years later he was, just think of “Tight Connection to My Heart.” Adler, as with everything, was ahead of his time. “Dylan’s Gospel” was a flop but it was re-released, I just learned, in 2014. Who knew?

Happy Birthday, Bob! Thanks, Lou and Merry and Gloria.

UPDATED Madonna’s New Nipple-Exposing Instagram Post is Something to Behold, Fan Writes: “You’re losing your marbles”

0

UPDATE Madonna, our agent provocateur, added later, hilariously: And for those of you who are offended in any way by this photo then I want to let you know that I have successfully graduated from the University of Zero F*^ks Given. Thanks for coming to the Ceremony! 🎓 Class of 2020!

EARLIER Madonna’s new Instagram post is a nipple baring, stark look at her inner thoughts. A fan writes: “You’re losing your marbles.” Madonna says: “Current Wardrobe Sitch……………”

PS No judgments here! This looks like a photo from some time ago, and I’m sure Madonna thinks of it as art. I had to censor it for our carriers, but you can see the real thing on Instagram.

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions Tweets Donald Trump: “Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”

0

Earlier today Donald Trump, petty president, attacked his former Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter. Sessions is running for the GOP Senate nomination in Alabama in a run off against someone named Tommy Tuberville. Trump wrote: “3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!”

Now Sessions, so well portrayed by Kate McKinnon on “Saturday Night Live,” has responded: “Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”

Republicans are crazy but really, this is over the top. That this sort of thing is now going in public and is REAL, not a satire or parody, is just INSANE. Sessions was a bad guy before the Trump administration. But we could live with that. Trump has tainted everyone, infected the common discourse, to this point.

Will it go round in circles? I hope so. To be continued…

Mariah Carey’s Fans Are Doing it Again, Gaming iTunes and Pushing The “Glitter” Album Up the iTunes Chart

0

The Mariah Carey fans, who hate me, are doing it again.

They’re gaming the iTunes chart, pushing the “Glitter” soundtrack album from the god awful movie of the same name, back up the chart. They’ve got it at number 13.

The fans did this November 2018 for two weeks, buying around 7,000 copies of “Glitter” and sending it to number 1. It fell off the chart a week later.

Just recently, Mariah’s “lambs” did this with another long and buried album, “E=MC2.” They drove it up to number 1 over a weekend. It hit the top on a Monday and was gone by Friday.

The only difference is that “E=Mc2” was discounted to $4.99. So even though it was money wasted, it wasn’t so much. The “Glitter” download is $8.99. The stakes are higher. Also sitting at number 1 right is a KPop album called “D2,” and those fans are already gaming the chart. So the lambs have a tougher go of it this time around.

“Glitter” sold no copies last week, or the week before. It will be interesting to see what the fans have done. We’ll get the first numbers for today over the weekend. Nature abhors a vacuum, and the Carey fans rush to fill it. I guess this is how they send their stimulus checks.

The Emmys Are More or Less Over: HBO Donates the Money it Spends on Lavish Annual Party to LA COVID Charity

The Emmy Awards will be presented, but not in the usual way. For one thing, there will be no lavish glamorous HBO after party at the Pacific Design Center.

Today HBO donated the money they would have spent to the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles Emergency COVID-19 Crisis Fund.

“On behalf of Bob Greenblatt and myself, we are proud to make this contribution from HBO instead of using it for our traditional Emmy party and FYC events,” said Casey Bloys, president, HBO Programming. “I am tremendously proud of all of our shows in Emmy® contention this year, and I am hopeful they will receive the recognition I believe is richly deserved for all of our talented collaborators, in front of and behind the camera. We look forward to being able to get back to the work we love.”

Per HBO, “The Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles Emergency COVID-19 Crisis Fund is providing essential support to emergent, critical needs identified with the City as it responds to the pandemic, including support for families and small businesses, relief for healthcare workers, critical healthcare equipment, victims of domestic violence, and services for the city’s homeless population.

The HBO Emmys after party is one of the great annual events. Everyone goes there when the show is over. Last year, HBOscored big time with a record number of nominations and wins. I was looking forward to “Succession” and “Barry” and several other HBO shows doing very well this year. Alas, they will, but we’ll have to Zoom into the party.

2021 can’t come fast enough!

Two Arrests in One Day: William Sadleir, A Movie Producer You Never Heard of, Is in a Lot of Trouble with the Law

0

You’ve never heard of William Sadleir (whose name might be pronounced “Sad liar.”) His movie company, Aviron, made bad movies with stars. They were D movies but the stars like Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, and so on didn’t mind the payday and hoped you’d not notice these releases.

In January, Aviron started laying off a lot of people.  Sadlier was ousted from the company.

Today, Sadleir was arrested in Los Angeles on charges that he filed bank loan applications fraudulently seeking more than $1.7 million dollars in forgivable Paycheck Protection Program loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration under the CARES Act, according to the Department of Justice. He took money from the government that was supposed to be for Aviron and paid off personal debts.

But Sadleir’s legal problems are bi-coastal. The US District Attorney in New York is charging him with engaging in multiple fraudulent schemes relating to investments made by a New York-based investment fund. The SEC alleges BlackRock Multi-Sector Income Trust, a registered closed-end management investment company, invested approximately $75 million in Aviron. They say Sadleir used $14 million of the money, again, to pay his expenses.

Whoops!  Sadleir was charged in the Complaint with two counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.  The wire fraud charges each carry a maximum prison term of 20 years.  The aggravated identify theft charge carries a mandatory sentence of two years in prison.

United States Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said:  “As alleged, William Sadleir orchestrated a massive fraud, embezzling approximately $14 million of investor funds from his film company to pay for a Beverly Hills estate, among other fraudulent acts.  Thanks to the dedicated work of our law enforcement partners at the FBI, Sadleir will be held accountable for his behind-the-scenes misdeeds.”

FBI Assistant Director William F. Sweeney Jr. said:  “William Sadleir, the chairman and CEO of Aviron Pictures, is charged today for his alleged role in a nearly $30 million fraud scheme.  He allegedly even went so far as to pose as a female employee of the sham New-York based company he created to further his illegal activity.  Today’s arrest serves as a reminder of the FBI’s dedication to holding people accountable for egregious financial crimes of this nature.”

Aviron’s movies were mostly awful except for one good one, Matthew Heinemann’s “A Private War,” starring Rosamund Pike and Jamie Dornan. The best of the Aviron bunch, it made just $3.8 million.

Taylor Swift’s Sunday ABC Concert Moved 20,000 Copies of Her “Lover” Album, Most of them from Streaming

0

I told you on Monday that Taylor Swift’s “City of Lover” special on ABC Sunday night was a so-so ratings getter.

The show scored just 3.5 million viewers, most in the older demos.

Now the figures are in for record sales this week. Instigated by the special, the “Lover” album sold 20,000 copies this week. Most of those were from streaming. Hard sales came to 4,400.

That’s also kind of meh. Of course, most Swift fans probably own “Lover” already or have streamed it previously. We could probably surmise these customers were the hold outs.

Swift is going to have to come up with something for the second half of 2020 if she’s going to stay in the game with Katy Perry. Adele, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande, her peers in the female pop game. All the others are busy releasing new material or losing lots of weight. The ball is in Taylor’s court.

Tony Bennett Celebrates the 70th Anniversary– Yes, 70th– of His First Hit Single for Columbia Records, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”

0

The amazing Tony Bennett today celebrates the 70th anniversary of his first hit single for Columbia Records, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Tony, who will turn 94 on August 3rd, has been with Columbia nearly every day of those 70 years. (Will Dominic Fike be able to say that one day?)

Here’s a video recap of Tony’s extraordinary career:

Tony’s first really big hit was 65 years ago, when “Stranger in Paradise” went to number 1 in 1955:

(Listen) Lady Gaga Features Ariana Grande on a Hit Duet from Her Forthcoming “Chromatica” Album

0

Lady Gaga’s coming with a new album, “Chromatica,” next Friday. Tonight she releases the second single, “Rain on Me,” a duet with Ariana Grande.

These two have pretty much the best voices of their generations. A duet seemed inevitable. Ariana is just coming off a duet with Justin Bieber, “Stuck with You,” but “Rain on Me” at least was recorded in the same studio, not over iPhones or whatnot.

Both women have their share of diva like disasters. Gaga has run through boyfriends and fiancees. She’s also dealing with serious incidents in her past including rape. Ariana broke up with Pete Davidson after her previous boyfriend, Mac Miller, died. She also had to go through having a concert in Manchester, England end with a bombing that killed 22 people.

Gaga told Apple Beats1 radio host Zane Lowe: “[Rain On Me] is also a metaphor for tears and for the amount of alcohol I was taking to numb myself. I’d rather be dry but at least I’m alive, rain on me.”

Anyway, here’s the song:

Netflix Movie Studio PR in Chaos as Chief Julie Fontaine Exits Her Post And Everything is Up in the Air

0

Netflix’s PR office has been a mess for a long time. Tonight comes news that Julie Fontaine, formerly of Lions Gate, is out as publicity chief in Los Angeles.

Only a few weeks ago, Nancy Bannister, who everyone loved and depended on, formerly of Paramount, left the New York office.

What’s going on? Too many movies, too many cooks in the kitchen, no clear delineations. In Los Angeles, who remains is Lisa Taback, head of awards, whose surgically precise campaigns yielded Netflix dozens of nominations but just two Oscars last season, for Laura Dern, as Best Supporting Actress, and the documentary, “American Factory.” Taback’s budget was said to be north of $100 million.

Netflix really had a hot hand last season, with Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Fernando Mereilles’s “Two Popes,” the documentary “American Factory,” and the animated film, “Klaus.”

Fontaine’s exit comes just a couple of weeks before Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” is going to hit the platform. It might have had a small theatrical release, but with the pandemic, that’s not happening. Still, Spike’s movie will be eligible for Oscars.

Whoever takes over the PR department, Netflix has some advantage this year since they can release movies without putting them in theaters and still be eligible. Thanks to the pandemic they also avoided their annual fight with the Cannes Film Festival.  Will this make the season more pleasant? I certainly hope so since last year was something no one wants to go through again.

And the question is, can anyone in the entertainment press and the “Oscar business” that has developed so grindingly over the last few years, can anyone endure the mishegos of past seasons post-pandemic? (Uh, not me, that ship has sailed.)

So hang on. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
