Second Time Around, Oprah’s Meghan-Harry Interview Beaten by NBC James Spader Drama “The Blacklist”

0

Remember when Oprah’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry scored 17.1 million viewers? That was last Sunday.

The interview swamped Sunday night’s ratings and killed everything in its path. It was all anyone could talk about for days.

Well, CBS re-ran the two hour kvetch fest on Friday night from 8 to 10pm. And guess what? Just over 3 million people showed up.

The first hour was beaten by NBC’s long running drama “The Blacklist” starring James Spader. The second hour did a little better and beat the first hour of “Dateline” on NBC. But the second hour of “Dateline” outdrew Oprah. So there.

If you didn’t tape it, or record it, that’s the last we’ll see of Oprah Royal special for a while. It’s gone into her vaults for future use only by her. CBS can’t show it on Paramount Plus. Oprah’s company, Harpo, will now charge a fortune for those clips.

Good deal, huh? That’s why Oprah has mansions and we’re in five floor walkups. Dig it!

Oprah Meghan-Harry Interview Sparks Piers Morgan Exit and Now Sharon Osbourne-Holly Robinson Peete War

0

Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry was just supposed to take down the monarchy.

But it’s caused a lot of other problems.

First, Piers Morgan went crazy on his British talk show attacking Markle. He lost his mind and wound up walking off the show for good after his colleagues attacked him for being racist.

Then, Sharon Osbourne– a fellow Brit– defended Piers, a lout, on CBS’s “The Talk.” She called him a loyal royalist and seemed to take his side against Meghan. Her fellow hosts, who are Black, went after her live on the air. Sharon tried to fix this by claiming she wasn’t a racist — which she isn’t, but her defense of Morgan is indefensible.

Sharon’s brouhaha drew out Holly Robinson Peete, who was let go from “The Talk” along with Leah Remini a decade ago when they were co-hosts with Osbourne and Julie Chen Moonves. Peete claimed Sharon told her she was “too ghetto” for “The Talk.” And got her fired! (It’s not true. Holly knows that.)

Now Sharon has posted a rebuttal to Twitter, saying:
“In response to Holly Robinson Peete’s accusation of me getting her fired from The Talk, I am sharing an e mail sent to me from Holly one month after she was let go by CBS. As I have stated before, I have never had the ability/authority to get anyone fired from The Talk.”

Listen, Sharon Osbourne does not play. Many years ago I watched her throw a drink in the face of Jonah Hill’s now deceased agent brother for saying something bad about her children. She drenched him. This was at Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy dinner, in front of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, no less.

So Sharon has posted a private letter Peete sent to her back in the day to prove they were on good terms. The letter is below.

Oprah! Wow! What will happen next?

Is There Finally A Last Will for Aretha Franklin? Seems to Be, And It’s a Surprise (But Doesn’t Change Much)

0

Aretha Franklin was a “genius,” as the new TV miniseries describes her, but she was afraid of death. Like most things, she compartmentalized her illness, pancreatic cancer, even as it worsened. When I traveled to Detroit in July 2018, a month before she died, she refused to sign a will, or sign papers regarding a movie that was planned about her. (She was more concerned that their had been a murder recently in the nice hotel where I was staying.)

No one close to her knew the exact details of her illness, even the bodyguards who traveled with her to hospitals. When I asked her directly, “Aretha, can we set aside everything aside and just talk about what’s going on for a minute?” she responded, “No.”

There was no signed Will. This was intentional. She couldn’t, and wouldn’t, deal with it. But when I saw this Will in the Detroit Free Press this week, it made sense. For one thing, Aretha crossed out the fee for junior lawyers and wrote in “200.”

In the letter from Henry Grix, the attorney who drew all this up and presented it this week to the probate court, he mentions that Aretha negotiated lower fees. As Aretha’s friends and close associates will tell you, that rings very true. I laughed out loud when I read that. It’s not that she was stingy– she wasn’t– but she liked a bargain.

After Aretha performed at Elton John’s AIDS fundraiser on November 2, 2017, we all sat together at a big round table where Aretha entertained visitors. She was very thin and frail, and it was clear the end was coming. One of the guests was a probate lawyer from Atlanta whom Aretha had summoned to the show. A Will was on her mind. This man and I spoke at length and stayed in touch, but nothing came of it. He told me later, after she died, “I think she used someone in Detroit.”

That would appear to be Mr. Grix. The Will, unsigned, is full of Aretha’s notes. She mentions David Bennett, her regular lawyer who was very loyal to her. There are other names, including her cousin Brenda and niece Sabrina, in her own handwriting. My gut feeling is that this is ‘it’ even though there is no signature.

This Will doesn’t change much, Aretha’s family will all be provided for. Why Mr. Grix didn’t present it sooner is odd, but he must have his reasons. (How could he forget the worked on this?) I’m sorry there’s been so much contentiousness in the family since Aretha passed. She loved her kids, and her whole extended family. She didn’t intend for them to be in a battle. But she couldn’t face the end, or the reality. I can’t blame her.

You know, Aretha was tough, and I saw plenty of that as her friend. But she was also a sweetheart. I miss her all the time. She got under your skin. And even though we knew the end was coming, her death was a shock. This document actually makes a lot of sense, really. I think her friends will recognize it as a real final statement.

April 8th is coming soon. That will be the 1st anniversary of the death, from COVID, of Aretha’s best friend, sometime fiancee and road manager, Willie Wilkerson at the age of 71. I still can’t believe Willie is gone. If he knew about this Will, he didn’t mention it to me. He was skeptical about notes for Wills found in a cabinet in her house. I can just hear him saying to Aretha now in heaven, “Really? When did you do that?” And Aretha’s eyes are twinkling with mischief.

To Life, Haim: Taylor Swift’s BFFs, Three Nice Jewish Girls From L.A., Are About to Make History at the Grammy Awards

0

To life, to life, L’Chaim! Or rather, Haim!

Haim– pronounced Hay-em– will make their debut on the Grammy Awards Sunday night. They are three nice Jewish girls from Los Angeles whose first gig was at Canter’s delicatessen in the Fairfax district.

Between servings of matzoh ball soup and lean pastrami, the Haim sisters — Danielle, Este, Alana – became stars. They opened for Taylor Swift in 2015 on her “1989” tour and became BFFs.

That same year they were nominated for Best New Artist, but lost. And they didn’t perform on the Grammys.

Think of them as the Kosher Roches.

Sunday night they are suddenly nominated for Album of the Year with their third album, “Women in Music, Part III.”  And their track, “The Steps,” is nominated for Best Rock Performance.

Their dad, Mordechai, was an Israeli soccer player who moved to Los Angeles with their mother, Donna, a “Gong Show” winner from Philadelphia. They went into real estate, but the father’s real love was fronting a rock band.

Last July, on a “deli tour,” Haim was featured in The New Yorker.

Their Album of the Year nomination certainly came out of left field. “Women in Music, Part III” has sold just 32,000 copies according to Buzz Angle/Alpha Data Music since its release last July. With streaming of singles, the total is still a subtle 84,500. They aren’t big radio stars either. And they are now on the “older” side of pop music, in their 30s.

“The Steps” hasn’t even been their biggest hit from “Women in Music, Part III.” That would be “Gasoline,” featuring, natch, Taylor Swift, who will likely win a raft of awards on Sunday night. But a rising tide lifts all boats, and Swift’s is no doubt helping Haim. The question is, does Swift like a little shmaltz?

Chris Harrison Out of “The Bachelorette” Next Season, Replaced After Rachel Lindsay Interview About Racism Explodes In His Face

0

Chris Harrison is out. Bachelor Nation has tossed its long time host after the now famous incident involving Harrison’s interview with Rachel Lindsay about contestant Rachael Kirkconnell’s photos from a plantation party. Harrison  will not host the next season of “The Bachelorette,” Warner Horizon and ABC Entertainment announced on Friday evening.

“We support Chris in the work that he is committed to doing.  In his absence, former Bachelorettes Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe will support the new Bachelorette through next season,” Warner Horizon and ABC Entertainment shared in the statement. “As we continue the dialogue around achieving greater equity and inclusion within The Bachelor franchise, we are dedicated to improving the BIPOC representation of our crew, including among the executive producer ranks. These are important steps in effecting fundamental change so that our franchise is a celebration of love that is reflective of our world.”

Lindsay is a former Bachelorette who is now a correspondent from “Extra.” She interviewed Harrison about the plantation party in light of the first Black Bachelor Matt James. This interview has basically destroyed Harrison’s career as he defends Kirkconnell’s racist past is unbelievable. When Lindsay shows the plantation party photo and says, “What part would I represent at that party?” it’s all over.

Harrison is just lost here. He has no training for this kind of interview. You almost feel sorry for him. He is out of his depth. He subsequently issued an apology. But it wasn’t enough.

Lady Gaga. John Legend, HER, Bruce Springsteen Among Sizzling Performances for MusiCares Streaming Fundraiser

0

Listen, you can see the Musicares MusicforaMission streaming show on their website until March 19th. That’s a week.

I watched it tonight for 25 bucks, a bargain. It’s chock full of amazing performances that only people who’ve been the annual LA shows have seen. And some that no one has seen.

Highlights include Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band doing Born to Run, Lady Gaga singing and playing piano on Carole King’s “You ‘ve Got a Friend,” performances from HER, John Legend, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty singing “Stop Dragging My Heart Around.”

The kids went crazy on Twitter for BTS in a very polished and catchy video that no one’s seen. Usher’s showmanship and dancing were spectacular on Lionel Richie’s “Lady (You Bring Me Up).” The Jonas Brothers do Aerosmith’s “Crazy” with verve and swing. And there are plenty more.

There are also pitches for MusiCares filmed Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Elton John, Mick Fleetwood, and many others.

The performances are so great, and just a fraction of what MusiCares has in its vaults. I think it’s time to get these things out in DVD box set for a lot of money, all for the charity. They will blow you away.

JLO and A-Rod Break Up: If These Two Selfless Humans Can’t Make A Relationship Work, Who Can?

0

The era of JLO and A-Rod is over.

If these two selfless humans can’t make a relationship work, who can?

Page Six broke the story. Alex Rodriguez apparently has been “sexting” if not sexing some babe named Madison LeCroy. (This can’t be her real name. That has to be Myrtle Gilooly.) It’s a tale as old as time.

Are we surprised? Shocked! Aghast! Can’t believe it! Why, A-Rod is a paragon of virtue. Ask his ex-wife. Ask the Yankees. Ask his steroid dealer.

And JLo? She’s so easy to get along with, a real PB&J kinda gal.  Jenny from the block. You should see her presenting coupons at Food Emporium, helping old ladies across the street.

JLo can add ARod to her list that includes P Diddy, Ben Affleck, and so on, not to mention Marc Anthony, who is no dount more upset than we are, he thought this was a done deal.

Brooke Baldwin Got the Last Laugh on CNN Today: She Guest Hosted for Ellen DeGeneres on Her Talk Show

Brooke Baldwin got the old heave ho from CNN recently, quite unceremoniously. They thought she was old news.

Today Brooke got the last laugh on CNN. She guest hosted Ellen DeGeneres’ syndicated talk show today and was great. The show has an average of 1 million viewers vs. CNN’s small viewership at the same hour– 3pm. Good for Brooke! She was a natural, too. Let’s hope this is the start of many cool jobs for her away from CNN.

Ryan Seacrest’s Non Profit Foundation Gives Raises to American Idol Host’s Father and Sister

0

It’s a tough world out there, unless you’re related to Ryan Seacrest.

The “American Idol” host has a 501 c3 non profit foundation that I’ve written about before. The mission is to put radio and recording studios into children’s hospitals.

There are two main staff members working for the Ryan Seacrest Foundation: Ryan’s sister Meredith and father Gary.

According to the foundation’s Form 990 tax filing for 2019, Meredith got a raise to $259,333 to $6,157 in benefits. Meredith is the foundation’s CEO.

Dad Gary, an attorney, was raised to $96,000 for legal services.

These two have a lot to do. They gave away 10 donations of $10,000 each to children’s hospitals, similar to what they’ve done every year.

Celebrity foundations are great ways to give money to your relatives tax free. Seacrest, who’s loaded from “Idol,” his radio show, and producing the Kardashians TV shows, couldn’t be expected to give his relatives taxable gifts. This is so much smarter!

UPDATED Ratings: Greed and COVID Killing “Grey’s Anatomy” as Revised Ratings Just Over 5 Million, Lowest Ever

0

SATURDAY MORNING: ABC revised its numbers for “Grey’s” putting it at 5.1 million. Still the lowest ever, but a stitch higher than that 5 million mark.

FRIDAY MORNING: Last night “Grey’s Anatomy” fell to 4.65 million viewers, a series and season low.

When “Grey’s Anatomy” ended its 16th season in April 2020, the final episode scored a season high 7.7 million viewers. That’s pretty great for a show on the air since Michael Jackson was on trial.

When the series returned this past November for a six episode run, ratings dropped 8.9% to 5.9 million viewers. Whoops! What happened?

Well, everyone was in masks, and COVID had come to Seattle’s Grey Sloan Hospital. Lead character Meredith Grey was in a coma and having dreams of being on Malibu beach dressed in beige.

By the sixth week, “Grey’s” had slipped by 300,000 viewers. Maybe the audience didn’t want to see COVID and death depicted on TV when they were experiencing it at home?

They didn’t like. Last’s night numbers indicate the party is over. Between Pompeo’s slagging of the show– she might leave! she wants more money! — and the killing of popular characters, the show is committing suicide faster than it can be cancelled.

First half hour last night was 4.898 million. Then the audience basically left– dropped to 4.364 million. Yikes!
