Mariah Carey Hawking Line of Christmas Products Like Ornaments and Candy Cane Colored Twine for $49.99

0

All Mariah Carey wants for Christmas is for you to fork over some dough. (It’s tough out there when you have that triple A lifestyle.)

That’s why Mariah, who can’t perform live right now and isn’t selling CDs, is moving into merch big time.

She’s hawking a line of Christmas products starting now with the holidays five and a half months away.

On Lootcrate.com you can order Mariah’s Christmas box for $49.99.

Her LootCrate contains ornaments and gifting essentials “like baker’s twine and exclusive gift labels to holiday baking treats like an exclusive cookie plate.”

The twine, I guess, can be used for lots of things besides wrapping gifts. Not included are Mariah’s Christmas records, the sales of which now account for 99% of her business all year.

Also not included: any of Nick Cannon’s new children.

Is this why Mariah left RocNation Management? Was Jay Z asking her not to do this? Well she had a vision of cash, and all that it was meant to be.

Cannes: Nothing for Sean Penn, “French Dispatch,” Adam Driver, Only American to Win is Caleb Landry Jones (Who, Some Might Ask?)

0

The Cannes Film Festival is finis.

And the winners are– no Americans, at least none who walked the red carpet to great fanfare.

There was nothing for Sean Penn, Wes Anderson, Adam Driver, etc. None of the big stars who got the PR splash from the US picked up a trophy.

But one American did win. Most people don’t know him, but the film community does. Caleb Landry Jones. He won Best Actor for Justin Kurzel’s “Nitram,” an Australian film. The red haired, freckled actor is known for roles in “Three Billboards” and “Twin Peaks” (the newer one), and appeared to great acclaim in Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost.”

“Nitram (Caleb Landry-Jones) lives with his mother (Judy Davis) and father (Anthony LaPaglia) in suburban Australia in the Mid 1990s. He lives a life of isolation and frustration at never being able to fit in. That is until he unexpectedly finds a close friend in a reclusive heiress, Helen (Essie Davis). However when that friendship meets its tragic end, and Nitram’s loneliness and anger grow, he begins a slow descent into a nightmare that culminates in the most nihilistic and heinous of acts.”

Britney Spears Goes on the Offensive, Decries Those Who Never Supported Her Suddenly Giving Public Endorsements

0

Britney Spears has taken to Instagram to warn off Johnny-come-lately’s– to her plight. She’s not interesting in those who never supported her suddenly showing up now to take her side. I guess she’s not impressed by recent posts from her fellow boyband-era singers, etc railing against her conservatorship. She’s really not into her own father making statements questioning the conservator. Really, Jamie Spears should just come in, hand the judge the so-called keys to the kingdom, and get out of Dodge while he can. This isn’t going to end well for him.

Britney writes:

There’s nothing worse than when the people closest to you who never showed up for you post things in regard to your situation whatever it may be and speak righteously for support … there’s nothing worse than that !!!! How dare the people you love the most say anything at all … did they even put a hand out to even lift me up at the TIME !!!??? How dare you make it public that NOW you CARE … did you put your hand out when I was drowning ???? Again … NO … so if you’re reading this and you know who you are … and you actually have the nerve to say anything about my situation just to save face for yourself publicly !!! If you’re gonna post something …. Please stop with the righteous approach when you’re so far from righteous it’s not even funny …. 🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼 and have a good day !!!!! PS if you’re reading this today and you can relate …. I’m sorry because I know what it’s like … and I send you my love 💋💋💋 !!!!

RIP Elliot Lawrence, 96, Won 9 Emmy Awards, 1 Tony, Jazz Composer, Big Band Leader, the Bernard Herrmann of Soap Operas

The composer, jazz musician, big band leader, Elliot Lawrence, died on July 2nd at age 96. He won 9 Emmy awards in his lifetime and a Tony Award. (He was nominated twice.)

Lawrence was musical director for 10 Broadway shows including “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying,” “1776,” and “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Because of his amazing resume, he would probably laugh that I’m citing this, but he was what I would call the Bernard Herrmann of soap operas. From the mid 70s to the mid 80s he was the composer and music director for the Procter & Gamble soaps, “The Edge of Night,” “As the World Turns,” “Guiding Light,” and “Search for Tomorrow.”

Here’s a great interview with Lawrence.

Working like Hermann with a little Henry Mancini thrown in, Lawrence what might be the quintessential soap theme for “The Edge of Night.” Gothic and mysterious, the theme stood on its own as a little work of genius. Contemporary to it was his update for “As the World Turns.”

Here’s the link to his official obit.

First, listen to his “real” work, like this beautiful jazz composition from 1958

and “Elevation,” his jazz hit collaboration with Gerry Mulligan

and then who knew that soap operas would benefit from his musicianship?

RIP Beloved Rapper Biz Markie, 57, “Clown Prince of Hip Hop,” Hit it Big with “Just a Friend”

amFAR Cannes Guests Stingy? Watch Sharon Stone Call Them “Cheap MF’s” During Gala Auction

0

It looks like Sharon Stone worked her tushy off on Friday trying to get the Eurotrash crowd at the amFAR Cannes event to pony up some dough.

VAriety’s Ramin Setoodeh posted a video of Stone calling the crowd “cheap motherf***kers” when no one responded to the offer of some coutour dresses for $200,000.

How much did amFAR actually make Friday night? We may never know. Their last tax filing, for 2019, shows that at their most recent Cannes dinner– in May 2019– they spent nearly $7 million in expenses to put on the freak show by the Mediterranean. Over $1.8 million was just for entertainment.

Last night’s entertainment was Alicia Keys, who sang four songs and didn’t fly over on her own dime. She came first class courtesy of amFAR, like all the other celebs who had to be brought in from the US.

In the old days, Harvey Weinstein would have a bunch of movies in Cannes, and keep the actors around for the amFAR night. But those days are over. All the big movie stars leave now after their movies premiere, so the amFAR event now has to be constructed out of whole cloth. The evening has almost no connection to the Cannes Film Festival, it doesn’t even take place in Cannes, but in neighboring Antibes.

In 2018, the group filed notice that they finished the year in the red, just as they did the year before, when expenses were calculated against revenue. And still they paid millions in salaries to their top executives.

amFAR brought back Sharon Stone this year to run the auction because they know she has a way with the audience. But if she was calling them “cheap mfers,” it might have been like getting blood from a…stone. With the pandemic, the high cost of travel, inflation, and worldwide uncertainty maybe no one wanted a collection of 30 couture dresses. Shocking.

Thanks to Ramin and Variety for posting the video.

Caitlyn Jenner, Running for Governor in California, Joins “Big Brother” in Australia, Flies in While Residents Are Locked Out

Isn’t Caitlyn Jenner running for governor of California?

In her spare time, she’s flown into Australia to be a guest on “Big Brother” in that country. And the people are outraged. Residents of Oz are locked out of re-entering their country because of COVID restrictions. But Caitlyn had no problem surmounting that obstacle.

According to the New Zealand Herald, there are thought to be as many as 34,000 Australians overseas who are trying to get home, yet just 3000 weekly spots. That’s down from a cap of almost 6500 last week after the Federal Government agreed to further limit arrivals in an attempt to lessen the risk of further Covid-19 leaks from hotel quarantine.

It’s so hard to get back into Australia for the poeple who live there that a Stranded Aussies Network has formed on the internet.

The former Bruce Jenner, ex-husband of Kris Jenner and father/step brother of the greedy, gross Kardashian-Jenner, doesn’t seem to care about the problems in Australia. An inveterate poster to social media, she’s failed to mention her trip or new job to her followers.

Anthony Bourdain’s Widow: She “Certainly Did Not” Say Husband Would Be “Cool” with Filmmaker’s Use of Artificial Voice Clips in New Doc

Here’s the story.

There’s a new documentary out today from Focus Features about CNN celebrity travel and food impresario Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain committed suicide in June 2018 after his actress/celebrity girlfriend, Asia Argento, flaunted another romantic relationship in the European tabloids.

(Here are some links to catch you up.)

The doc is from Oscar winner Morgan Neville, who has done something in the film never done before and hotly criticized today by filmmakers who are just finding out about. He used Artificial Intelligence to piece together Bourdain’s voice. He’s got Bourdain reading aloud in the film things he never said and there are no recordings of.

This is considered blasphemy among real documentary filmmakers. It’s also questionably unethical. On top of that, Neville said in a New Yorker interview: ““I checked…with his widow and his literary executor, just to make sure people were cool with that,” Neville said. “And they were like, Tony would have been cool with that. I wasn’t putting words into his mouth. I was just trying to make them come alive.”

His widow, Ottavia Bourdain, responded to that assertion swiftly on Twitter: “I certainly was NOT the one who said Tony would have been cool with that.”

Neville is a serious filmmaker. I can’t for the life of me understand how such an idea was invented in the first place. It would have been one thing to have an actor read Bourdain’s thoughts or emails, but to cobble together his voice from shards and teach it to speak like the subject– this is an outrageous mistake in judgement.

He tells the New Yorker: “I created an AI model of his voice,” Neville says. He goes on to say, “If you watch the film, other than that line you mentioned, you probably don’t know what the other lines are that were spoken by the AI, and you’re not going to know.”

In a GQ interview he explained:  “We fed more than ten hours of Tony’s voice into an AI model. The bigger the quantity, the better the result. We worked with four companies before settling on the best. We also had to figure out the best tone of Tony’s voice: His speaking voice versus his “narrator” voice, which itself changed dramatically of over the years. The narrator voice got very performative and sing-songy in the “No Reservation” years. I checked, you know, with his widow and his literary executor, just to make sure people were cool with that. And they were like, Tony would have been cool with that. I wasn’t putting words into his mouth. I was just trying to make them come alive.”

What???? And no one stopped him to say, Are you insane? Something has gone way wrong here in the thought process that led to this episode.

Watch Video from Bob Dylan’s Grandson, Pablo Dylan, Named for Chilean Poet Pablo Neruda

0

Dylan progeny are everywhere! In the same week that his uncle Jakob Dylan released a new Wallflowers album comes an EP from Bob Dylan’s grandson, Pablo (his dad is Jakob’s brother Jesse, the filmmaker).

The EP is called “Fortitude,” and it’s Pablo’s second EP this year following “Solitude.” The song is called “Ward No. 9” and he says it’s inspired by George Floyd. You can read his comments below from Instagram.

Pablo is named for Nobel Prize winning poet and politician Pablo Neruda. Give him a chance. The hardest thing is for the aforementioned progeny to strike out on their own. He’s in the family business!
