Ratings: HBO Says “Succession” Finale Hit 2.9 Million, But Numbers Aren’t Too Different from Season

“Succession” is a great show, maybe one of the best of all time. But it was not “Game of Thrones.”

HBO says the “Succession” season finale hit 2.9 million across all platforms including the HBO channel and (HBO) Max. This is just from Sunday night and not from the last couple of days of delayed viewing.

On HBO itself, the linear viewing was in the high 800,000 range. The finale did marginally better than the rest of the season, although it was 68% higher, they say, than the Season 3 finale.

All of this is about the same as the average this season. “Succession” is a niche show. The audience only grew to a point, which is why maybe HBO wanted to wrap it up now. No big dragon fights or zombie wars were coming. Just more of the same, which, of course, the hardcore fans loved.

For HBO, “Succession” is a prestige show. It will sweep the Emmys and SAG and Critics Choice Awards. It will live on as a perennial favorite, always admired and much missed. But it’s a finite proposition.

Box Office: Ben Affleck’s “Hypnotic” Goes to VOD After Collapse, Disney’s “Little Mermaid” Hits But Falls Short of Target

Wrapping up the weekend box office.

Robert Rodriguez’s “Hypnotic” was really a bust. Released by Ketchup Entertainment, it never made it out of the bottle. Today, “Hypnotic” goes to streaming platforms after a short, sad run. Total take was $4.7 million. Funny how this stuff works. Star Ben Affleck has had such a big hit with “AIR,” which will be going to the Oscars. But “Hypnotic” failed to hypnotize anyone…

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” made $117 from last Thursday through yesterday, which sounds pretty good. But it fell short of a hope for $120 million and was kind of less than celebratory in its debut. Maybe “Mermaid” will have fins and keep swimming as school gets out.

A24 managed to botch Julia Louis Dreyfus in “You Hurt My Feelings,” a terrific little film made by Nicole Holofcener. I guess they weren’t used to a regular, understandable movie told in one universe. Well, with their connections, “You Hurt My Feelings” will at least get on the NBR’s Indie film list. That’s something.

Taylor Swift Has Sold 5 Million Albums in 5 Months, Has 14 of Them on the Top 100 Right Now During Eras Tour

This has to be a first of some kind.

According to numbers I checked with Luminate, Taylor Swift has sold almost 5 million albums since January 1, 2023.

She has around 14 titles on the iTunes and Luminate top 100 albums charts. That includes 3 versions of her “Midnights” album, and all of her re-recorded “Taylor’s Version” collections of past releases.

This is all in conjunction with her monster “Eras” tour going on right now, which is so sold out even she might not be able to get tickets for under a thousand bucks.

Billy Joel did say a few years ago that Swift is the Beatles of our time. In a sales sense, he’s right.

Swift’s total number through Friday is 4.9 million. She’ll hit the 5 million mark this week. No one else comes close. Just for comparison: Adele has sold 605,000 albums so far this year. Even Morgan Wallen, who’s a big country star despite controversies, has sold just 4 million.

This chapter of pop music history is all about Taylor Swift. Brav-oh.

How Much Did Ed Sheeran’s Lawsuit Win Cost Him? Newest Album Has Sold Just 204K Copies Since Release

Ed Sheeran won his lawsuit but he lost something else in the process.

Sheeran’s latest album, released just as the jury reached its verdict, has been a relative bomb.

After a string of best selling records, Sheeran’s new one — called “Subtract” — has sold only a fraction of his previous collections.

“Subtract” has sold just 204,000 copies since its release almost a month ago. It wobbled out of the gate and never picked up speed. The two singles from the album have been far cries from his previous hits.

It’s unclear now why his record label didn’t wait until the trial was over and some time had passed before they released “Subtract.” Sheeran even appeared on “SNL,” but as with the Jonas Brothers, got no sales bounce. And what if he lost the case? They took a high stakes gamble on that one.

So far no effort has been to step in and save the album, either. This is unlike Ed’s buddy, Taylor Swift, who releases updated versions of her albums every few weeks, adds tracks, invents things and is a marketing genius (or someone in her camp is)..

Swift is on a mega tour, selling out arenas and stadiums. She’s also got about one fifth of the album charts covered with all her different releases. Sheeran should talk to her people.

Will the red haired guitarist be able to bounce back from this mess? Yes of course. He just needs to put some thought into it, and get some cool tracks cooking. I’m sure there’s something from “Subtract” than be revived, with the right ideas.

“Succession” Finale: A Brilliant Shakespearean Ending with Nods to “The Godfather, Part 2” and even Mary Tyler Moore (SPOILERS)

“Succession” has ended, with terrible infighting, backstabbing, and the truth: Kendall wasn’t capable of running the company, and Shiv lived up to her name.

In the end, Shiv did Kendall in, went with Tom, the father of her baby, although she doesn’t love or trust him. Shiv chose “the striver” over her brothers.

As Logan, their father said, “You are not serious people.”

The ending of “Succession” had echoes of “The Godfather II” — Kendall as Michael Corleone winds up alone after many betrayals — and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” You remember that the only person who kept his job at WJM was the clown, Ted Baxter, who turned his back on his friends.

Let’s start with the main trio: Kendall, Shiv, and Roman are just three children with billions of dollars who are still getting ice cream in the ultra expensive Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen (nice mention, now everyone will be trying to get a fresh peach cone).

The beauty of the final episode was the writing. Jesse Armstrong dangled the hope of a united front and then dumped it, viciously. Assembled under their brittle mother’s roof, the kids argue it out, Shiv is told she’s been betrayed by Matsson, and they vow to take the company away from him. Shiv and Roman finally agree that Kendall should be their leader.

Or do they?

Sarah Snook lets that look pass over her face. Either Shiv is unconvinced or she’s already been plotting something. When it comes time to vote, you know she will be a hold out, only the way she does it is as shocking as a killing on “Game of Thrones.”

“You can’t be in charge,” she says to Kendall. “You killed someone.” She’s referring to the waiter who drowned, Chappaquiddick style, after her wedding to Tom, in a car with Kendall. So that’s one sword in. The cutting blow comes from Roman, who reminds Kendall that his children aren’t even his biologically, just “rando’s,” and that Shiv’s unborn child is really the rightful heir to the Roy throne.

And that’s it. Kendall is down. It’s a chilling moment to see what these three can do to each other. It’s even worse because Kendall, with lots of mental health issues, is the most vulnerable. Shiv and Roman see it, and they disembowel him.

Two things Armstrong did not wrap up: the three adult kids bid $10 billion for Pierce Media Group. Presumably they now own it. Will Kendall recover and buy out the other two? And even more importantly, we don’t know the outcome of the presidential election. Will Mencken win and stop the Go Jo purchase of Waystar? The board has voted but the deal is not consummated.

It’s possible, but unlikely, we will see more “Succession” one day, either in a limited series, a movie (HBO likes these things– “Sex and the City,” “Entourage”) that really ends the story. Or maybe we’ll just live on with the memory of Kendall sitting in Battery Park, protected by bodyguard Colin from killing himself.

There’s one postscript. Earlier in the day, or late Saturday, after four years, someone finally drew a comparison between Tom’s last name and that of an obscure long ago real life baseball player who scored a triple play in the World Series and rose to stardom. Tom was named for him, apparently, which signaled his eventual success in taking over the company. I don’t think this hurried last minute news, which went viral, was a surprise. It was a planned leak. But it worked heighten the tension of the ending on social media. Nicely done.

“Succession” can only win Best Drama, Actor (Strong or Culkin or a tie), Actress (Snook), Supporting Actor (MacFadyen), Guest Actor (Brian Cox), plus writing and directing and some below the line credits. If it misses any, the Emmys will never be taken seriously again.

So who won the Cannes Film Festival?

After almost two weeks, Jane Fonda came to town on Friday. Almost everything was done: the parties, the screenings, fighting with security guards, everyone’s inability to get tickets. Both Michael Douglas and Harrison Ford had received accolades. Catherine Deneuve swanned around like a French Queen. All the gelato had been eaten.

But there was Jane, age 85. She came as part of the L’Oreal contingent, which was headed this year by Kate Winslet. First stop: a masterclass in which the audience could ask questions. The answers were bold and beautiful, producing headlines. Robert Redford is a bad kisser and doesn’t work well with women but Jane was in love with him on four of their five pictures.

Fonda said was told to become an activist actress because just being an activist wouldn’t get the message out there. She doesn’t want to make another “Book Club” movie but something really substantial. She and Katharine Hepburn tussled on “On Golden Pond” because they were the two most independent, substantial actors in Hollywood history.

That was Friday.

On Saturday, Fonda — glittering, glowing, glistening — presented the Palme d’Or to director Justin Triet, who made “Anatomy of a Fall.” Triet is the seventh woman ever to win the prize, as Fonda pointed out. When Triet left the stage without her scroll, Fonda, in a nicely comic moment, tossed it at her.

Fonda, who sure doesn’t look 85, has been in three movies this year: “80 for Brady,” “Book Club 2,” and “Moving On.” She could easily make a third “Book Club” but she’s done. She has two Oscars, for “Klute” and “Coming Home.” She could have won for “Julia,” and “The China Syndrome.” If she hadn’t taken a long break during her marriage to Ted Turner, the sky was the limit. She returned with the fun “Monster in Law” and Netflix’s longest running series, “Grace and Frankie.” She can do anything.

In a glittering black beaded gown and regal gray hair, Fonda was the epitome of class, grace and beauty. No one has represented Old Hollywood with such intelligence and style. I hope they send a Palme d’Or because in the end she was the one who deserved it.

Lana Del Rey Is Having a Moment: Cultish Pop Singer Has Hit with Taylor Swift, and Another One Brewing Out of the Blue

Lana del Rey is finally having a moment.

A decade after her one and only actual hit, she’s got a big one with Taylor Swift and another one brewing out of the blue.

In 2013, Lana’s “Young and Beautiful” made the top 10 and continues to be a streaming favorite.

Her subsequent albums, each one considered “brilliant” or “genius,” have done well. But the so-called singles have not been hits like those of other contemporary stars. Del Ray — whose real name is Elizabeth Grant — makes ethereal music with insightful lyrics and complicated melodies. Her hooks are not top 40, but they are memorable. The cool kids get her.

But now, thanks to the Taylor Swift Machine, Lana has a huge hit with “Snow on the Beach.” Swift released the collaboration on her “Midnights” album but with del Rey’s vocals minimized. Now a revised version is out with “More Lana Del Rey” and it’s risen to the top of the iTunes singles chart. The song sounds more like a Lana Del Rey song than a Taylor Swift hit (she has plenty– I really like the new “Hits Different” a lot). But the combo works very well.

Del Rey’s other hit coming is already a smash in Britain. “Say Yes to Heaven” was an outcast from several of her albums. It just never made the cut. Recorded in 2013, the track just drifted around. It was a real cult song, with a rumored 100 mixes by different people who’d loved it. Now the original version has risen from the ashes. It’s on top in the UK and should be here soon, as well.

It’s time for someone to take Lana in hand and put together a Best of collection. Strike while the iron is hot!

Box Office: “Little Mermaid” Splashes to 4th Highest Disney Live Action Reimagined Film Despite Early Protests About Casting

“The Little Mermaid” is a bigger swimmer than anyone could have predicted.

The live action remake of the popular cartoon was the fourth highest of all Disney’s double dips, coming with a $95 million weekend. That’s higher than “Aladdin” with Will Smith in 2019.

The success is extra nice because there were protests up front about casting being “different” than what some limited minded fans imagined. Reviews are positive if not overwhelming, but audience response is excellent. Also, school is getting out, so parents have to take their kids someplace, and everyone’s seen “Super Mario.”

When does Round 3 begin of re-remaking the live action films as dramas? “Cinderella” would be a good place to start.

Elsewhere the box office was not stimulated. A24 followed up their dud, “Beau is Afraid” with a really good film that few saw called “You Hurt My Feelings.” Something called “The Machine,” which no one knows a thing about (in keeping with Sony strategy) made $4.9 million, a bit more than the latest Robert De Niro side movie, “About My Father.” (Lucky for De Niro he has an Oscar nom coming with a hit in “Killers of the Flower Moon” this fall.)

“Fast X” played to the franchise’s fans and has $108K in two weeks. This is like a big TV series now. They’re never going to have new audience. But the loyals keep turning up, and everyone involved has made a ton of money.

John Fogerty Dedicates “Proud Mary” To Tina Turner in Concert: “We’ve lost the Queen of Rock and Roll” (Watch)

Tina and Ike Turner had their first breakthrough hit in 1971 with “Proud Mary.” The song was written by John Fogerty and performed by his group, Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Two nights ago, Fogerty performed “Proud Mary” and dedicated it to Tina after her sad passing this week. He said, “It’s the first good song I ever wrote.” He added: “We’ve lost the Queen of Rock and Roll.”

“Proud Mary” came from CCR’s second album, called “Bayou Country,”

released in 1969.

It was the third track on the second side of a short album. But Tina and Ike heard something, slowed down the beginning famously, then went wild. The rest is history.

Pop Shock: Jonas Brothers New Album Drops Off Top Spots on All Charts After 1 Week Despite Group Selling Out Yankee Stadium Twice

Even the worst pop album to debut at number 3 on the charts would still be in the top 50 for a second week.

But The Jonas Brothers’ “The Album” went from 3 last week to off the top 50 on iTunes and the top 100 on amazon. It’s just gone.

On Amazon.com it’s number 116. It’s not just dead, it’s most seriously dead. Luminate indicates maybe sales of 23,000 last week, about 50% off from the debut week. The current iTunes top 200 has “The Album” at 54.

Was no money put into it? Did the mob do something? I’m wracking my brain going through the lists of things that could happen to a record in the history of this shady business.

The weird thing is the exact same scenario happened to Nick Jonas’s solo album in 2021. After appearing on “Saturday Night Live,” Nick’s album was released, and died.

Now the same thing has happened with “The Album.”

Talk about Stranger Things! It’s not like the Jonas trio isn’t popular. Wherever they go, girls scream. They’ve sold out two nights at Yankee Stadium in August. That’s around 80,000 seats. Is it possible none of those fans bought the new album, or even liked one new song?
