Mariah Carey: New Single May Be Titled “Triumphant” to Mark “Idol” Deal

0

Exclusive: Well, I wrote this more than a week ago, but I’ll tell you again. Randy Jackson, the original “American Idol” judge, manages Mariah Carey. He’s also producing her new album. On Tuesday this past week, Randy flew out to the Hamptons by helicopter from New York to see Mariah for a couple of hours. He was in the city promoting his new line of watches for HSN, which debuted last night.

Randy is bringing Mariah to “Idol” to join him as a judge. It’s the perfect situation. They can finish their album, and Mariah can settle in for a couple of years, hopefully, as her twins are in their formative years. “Idol” will keep her close to home. Plus, when said allbum is released, it will give her an automatic platform from which to  launch and promote it.

Now here’s the newest news: The first single from the album, I am told, is a song called “Triumphant.” When all the “Idol” contracts are signed, and the deal is finalized, both Randy and Mariah will be exactly that–Triumphant. And “American Idol” will be a fun show to watch again. Unlike Jennifer Lopez, Mariah can sing, sing, sing. No doubt we’ll hear a lot of warbling from the judges’ table.

Now we’ll have two members of the same family on competing reality-singing shows because Nick Cannon, Mariah’s hubby, host “America’s Got Talent.” The Carey-Cannons have talent, too!

Sinead O’Connor Comes to NYC, And We Learn She’s Actually A Cutie Pie

0

Sinead O’Connor–yes, we also think of her ripping up the Pope’s picture on TV, causing a lot of trouble, getting married for a week in Las Vegas. So we were a little apprehensive about meeting her last night at Lincoln Center for the memorial tribute to Curtis Mayfield on what would have been his 70th birthday. But here’s what has been learned: Sinead O’Connor is a cutie pie. She’s also got a great knack for gospel. She’s funny and very pleasant. She’s also tiny. She still has the shaved head, wears a priest’s collar and a large cross.

She sang Mayfield’s song, “Jesus” with such impressive force and rhythm that all the soul singers on the Mayfield tribute, including Stax great William Bell, were wowed. O’Connor flew in from Ireland just for the occasion and is headed right home this morning. What made her do it? “I fell in love with Curtis Mayfield,” she said. Someone gave her one of Mayfield’s albums a couple of years ago, and Sinead just flipped. She literally “begged” to be in the Lincoln Center show, an insider told me. She got her wish, won over the audience, and had a ball. She was total fun all night. Go figure.

The Mayfield tribute also featured Fred Cash and Sam Gooden– the original members of his group, the Impressions, sans Jerry Butler, as well as William Bell, Mavis Staples, Meshell Ndegeocello, and TV on the Radio. There were some unknowns, too: Ryan Montbleau (a star in Boston), two singers I didn’t know–Bilal and Aloe Blacc, and a knockout newcomer named Inyang Bassey. The latter was a sensation on “Darker than Blue.” It turns out she’s been working with Moby, is unsigned, and a potential star. Record companies, listen up. This girl can sing but she’s also got style, swagger, and she’s a sweetheart. Here are a couple of links: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvH3X7vs6jQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWQc1eKnHXA. She may also be related to Shirley Bassey, but that’s another story.

Meantime, it was great to catch up with William Bell, who had the first hit at Stax Records in 1961 with “You Don’t Miss Your Water.” He must have been six because he doesn’t look very old now. William told great stories at dinner after the show about Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. He’s going to do a show soon down in the Atlanta area with the Allman Brothers Band. If you’re down there, don’t miss it.

By the way, Avery Fisher Hall was sold out completely for this show. It was quite a tribute to Curtis Mayfield, who died in 1999 at age 57.  He left behind a beautiful, smart widow, Altheida, who’s worked diligently to preserve his legacy for her seven kids with him, and the children from his earlier relationships. Mayfield left behind such a large catalog of hits not all of them could be fit into the show last night. Indeed, at the last minute they dropped “Superfly” as an encore because time had run out. But all the artists joined in on “Move on Up” as a rousing encore.

Now, if only the producers of “Sparkle,” the Whitney Houston movie, would contact Altheida Mayfield and invite her to the Los Angeles premiere. Strangely, she still has heard nothing from Sony Tri-Star or anyone. The original “Sparkle” had five songs written by Mayfield. Four of them have been re-recorded for the new movie, including the hit “Something He Can Feel.”

“The Dark Knight Rises” Makes Strong $30.6 Mil Overnight Despite Tragedy

0

It’s a terrible loss in Colorado. So reporting box office numbers from “The Dark Knight” seems frivolous. But despite the tragedy, “The Dark Knight Rises” was already pre-sold around the country. Boxofficemojo.com is reporting that overnight totals are $30.6 million. The record for midnight showings is the final “Harry Potter” movie, which did $43,5 million.

Friday night’s take will count as the official first night, and I guess that money will be included. But “The Dark Knight Rises” is set to knock off a bunch of records this weekend. Meanwhile, there are numerous messages of condolence all over the internet. And by far the most unusual story so far is that of Jessica Redfield, who narrowly missed being in another shoot-out in a Toronto mall in June. And that’s Canada, which is supposed to be so safe. Some kind of gun control is needed everywhere.

PS Four years ago, “The Dark Knight” took in $67 million on July 18th, 2008. To beat that number, the new movie only has to do $37 million today.

Dark Knight in Aurora, Colorado: 12 Dead, 38 Wounded; Paris Premiere Cancelled

0

Tragedy in Aurora, Colorado: 12 people were killed during a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” and 38 were wounded, including a baby. A gunman named James Holmes entered the theater through the emergency exit, tossed tear gas, and began shooting randomly. Warner Bros. has already expressed its sympathy to the victims in a terse two sentence statement. “Warner Bros. is deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time.”

But in Paris, the opening night of “The Dark Knight Rises” has been cancelled. And in New York, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has announced tightened security at all theaters showing the Batman movie. Just about all the showings of “The Dark Knight Rises” are sold out, so the crowds today and tonight–presold–will be very heavy. The argument for gun control gets a lot stronger now, especially in Colorado, the scene now of two terrible mass shootings in this generation:

Here is a video link to what happened in this horrific tragedy:

Scientology-Like Group Called “Cult” in Trailer for Oscar-Buzzed Fall Movie

0

The trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” is out–you can see it in our video play at the bottom of the home page. It’s loosely based on the storyof how L. Ron Hubbard started Scientology. And the world “cult” is used in the trailer to describe the group that Lancaster Dodd, the Hubbard character, starts. The movie seems to be about a drifter played by Joaquin Phoenix who inspires Dodd but then turns on him. It appears that he has to be eliminated in order for Dodd’s work to go on. Anderson showed a rough cut of the film to Tom Cruise last spring as a courtesy–Cruise appeared in Anderson’s “Magnolia” years ago. Cruise, I was told, wasn’t thrilled with the film. Apparently Anderson has simply persevered. Given the revelations this summer about Cruise and Scientology, “The Master” is set to start a firestorm this fall.

Watch the trailer in the video player.

Katie Holmes Already Has a Broadway Play Lined Up

0

Katie Holmes has not let one minute pass since her quickie divorce. She’s already lined up a Broadway play. Jack O’Brien is set to direct her in “Dead Accounts,” a new play by Theresa Rebeck. Jeffrey Finn is producing. The play consists of five characters. Katie will play the sister of the main character, a wealthy guy who’s left his wife. Rebeck was the creator of the TV show “Smash.” She was given the axe this spring as show runner. Finn produced her last play, “Seminar,” starring Alan Rickman as a reimagined version of famed writing teacher and editor Gordon Lish. It’s unclear who these characters will be based on.

Finn told me on the phone tonight that he couldn’t say how long this had been in the works, or even exactly when it will open. “Sometime in the fall,” he said. The fall runs from September 21st- December 21st. Anyway, “Dead Accounts” had its world premiere last winter in Rebeck’s hometown of Cincinnatti, where it got mixed to poor reviews. Hopefully she’s had time to work on it. One reviewer called it ” shallow and emotionally flat. The characters were uninteresting and very stereotypical. If you remove all the Cincinnati references (which ALWAYS generate a laugh) there are few moments in the show that actually speak to Cincinnati.”

The reviewer at cincinnati.com, a Gannett publication, wrote that the first act “has the bones of a great sitcom.” That was praise, by the way.

I’ve never been to Cincinnati so I can’t judge. But the father, whom Katie’s character takes care of, suffers from kidney stones. I can relate to that. Katie, give him a lot of Oxycodone.

For Holmes, this is swell. This is what she told me she wanted to back in April 2005. Along the way, she did appear in a revival of “All My Sons.” Tom Cruise hovered over that production like a storm cloud. This time, she’s entirely on her own. I’m assuming Katie’s manager John Carrabino, whom she left in 2005 but returned to around 2009, cut the deal. If he calls back, I’ll let you know.

“Dark Knight Rises” to the Occasion: 2000 Sold Out Shows Across the Country

0

UPDATE THURSDAY 7:50pm: Fandango reports 2000 sold out shows across the country, and that “The Dark Knight” is doing as well or better than the record breaking “Avengers” from earlier this summer. Here it comes, Bat – fans. A Bat tsunami!

Fandango, the online movie ticket service, says 91% of all its ticket sales today are for “The Dark Knight Rises.” Christopher Nolan’s third and final Batman movie already has $25 million in advance sales from yesterday. Basically, with scalpers charging huge mark ups for tickets in New York, the Caped Crusader is about to smash all records this weekend. Get this: secondary ticket broker Stub Hub is indicating over 25 sold out screenings in Manhattan starting at midnight tonight and going through the middle of the night and all day tomorrow through Friday night. http://tinyurl.com/c3md3zq. They don’t even have marked up tickets to sell. There are no tickets. Holy ticket drought, Batman! Keep coming back here for updates….

“Mad Men” Outrage: John Slattery and Jessica Pare Snubbed

0

This is a scandal: both John Slattery and Jessica Pare were snubbed by the Emmy Awards for their outstanding work on “Mad Men.” This is sort of unbelievable. First of all, Slattery–Roger Sterling’s acid trip was one of the two highlights of the season. It was a landmark episode. As well, Slattery’s delivery in every scene of every episode almost seems effortless. Slattery’s Sterling is maybe the best character on all of television, frankly. He’s as smooth and wry as well, whiskey and rye. It’s quite maddening that he’s been left out of the Emmys. At the same time, Jessica Pare nearly stole “Mad Men” and the spring TV season as Megan Draper. Her performance of “Zou Bisou Bisou” was maybe the most talked about moment of TV all season. For Slattery and Pare to be ignored means there’s some snafu at AMC. There’s some disconnect, that’s for sure. On Emmy night, these two should have their own party, and have statues presented to them.

Jermaine Jackson Says Mother Did Have Stroke, Wages War to Get Michael’s Money

0

Jermaine Jackson is waging war against TMZ and other outlets who quoted his niece, Paris, last night. Jermaine, with whom Michael Jackson had little or no contact for the last couple of years of his life, is claiming that his mother,Katherine, did in fact have a stroke. He Tweeted: “As Paris tonight clarified, she earlier rushed to end Twitter talk that Mother is ill TODAY, but Paris didn’t expose any “lie” as TMZclaim…The truth is that Mother DID suffer a mini-stroke some months ago. She is fine now, but the timeline doesn’t alter the fact it happened.” Jermaine adds: “This is a serious matter that has been weighed carefully, including taking into account Michael’s thoughts and feelings when he was alive…”

None of this is going to fly. Michael Jackson was estranged from his siblings most of the time. He left them out of his Will, purposely. For years Jermaine, his children, and ex wife lived with Katherine Jackson at her Hayvenhurst Avenue estate in Encino. But all that has changed. Katherine and Michael’s three children have moved to a house in a gated community in Calabasas. The Hayvenhurst house was renovated and is up for sale. Everyone not supposed to be living there has been given the boot. That hasn’t made anyone happy.

All of this squawking about Michael’s Will, and the siblings trying to get money is kind of ridiculous. The Will is not going to be overturned. The Jackson siblings don’t seem to get the reality of their situation three years after Michael’s death.

Flashback 2009: Michael Jackson Manager Tohme Tohme Said Star Could Do “100 Shows”

0

I wrote the story below in March 2009. Today, the godawful Hollywood Reporter has taken some of this info, wrapped up with some other stuff that is all wrong, and delivered a mess about Michael Jackson. Just to set the record straight: I interviewed Tohme Tohme, Michael’s short time manager. I personally and exclusively ascertained that he wasn’t a doctor and wasn’t a special envoy to Senegal, as he claimed. Shortly after this ran, Tohme was fired. He was replaced by Michael’s earlier and most successful manager Frank DiLeo, whom Michael trusted more than anyone. Tohme is now being sued by the Jackson estate. The Hollywood Reporter article is mostly fakakta. Anyway, in effort to un-rewrite history, here goes:

For about a year, since right before the chaos involving his Neverland Ranch possibly being sold at auction, Michael Jackson has had a mysterious new manager.

The man known as Tohme (pronounced toe-may) called himself a doctor. Different sources said he referred to himself either as an orthopedist or orthopedic surgeon. But there was a discrepancy: who was this man, the latest in a long line of managers who seemed to Svengali the pop star?

Yesterday, after many efforts, I finally pinned the 59-year-old Tohme down. A little. He conceded that he is not a licensed physician. “Not at this time,” he said. He refused, after repeated attempts, to say what kind of doctor he might have been at any time. His associates declined as well.

“If you want to talk about Michael Jackson, fine,” he said. “The story isn’t about me.”

But the story is very much about Tohme, who has not only taken over Jackson’s life but has a certain conflict of interest: he acts as a consultant to Colony Capital LLC, the company now partnered with Jackson in ownership of Neverland. Colony bought Fortress Investment’s $23.5 million note on the ranch last year.

More recently, they changed the name of the property to Sycamore Valley Ranch and became partners in the deed with Jackson. A small fortune changed hands, giving Jackson a much needed cash infusion of several million dollars.

But the pop singer always needs more money — he’s like a vampire when it comes to funds. So Tohme restarted talks with AEG Live begun in 2007 about Jackson performing at the O2 Arena in London. Now a staggering 35 dates have been set beginning July 8th. Another 15 are likely. Jackson hasn’t performed live in a full show since September 10, 2001.

Adding to this, Tohme is also responsible for the coming auction of Jackson’s personal memorabilia. He set up the auction with Julien’s Auction House last fall. Contracts were signed. Now Jackson is suing Julien’s, saying he didn’t know what was going on. Julien has catalogs printed, and is going forward. So far, Jackson’s attorney has not filed for a court order to stop the auction.

Sources around Jackson don’t have a high opinion of Tohme. They worry that he’s just the latest person who’s come into Jackson’s life with a personal agenda.

But Thomas Barrack, head of Colony Capital, says Tohme’s a “great guy,” someone’s he known a long time “in the business world, around L.A.” When I asked him how Tohme knew Jackson, Barrack answered: “You’ll have to ask him.” He did say it was Tohme who introduced him to Jackson.

Tohme is fuzzy on this point. “I knew him a long time,” he said of Jackson. At first he said he knew Jackson’s family, then he backtracked and said his relationship was with Michael. We never really figured that one out.

“I love Michael,” Tohme said. “I want what’s best for him. When the problems with Neverland came, I was approached to see if I could help. I knew him for twenty to thirty years.”

Tohme told me he set up the AEG Live deal, even though he was clearly not around in 2007 when I first reported the story. I asked him if he set up the auction. “I did not set up the auction, the auction is not going through!” This is in direct contrast to my conversation with auctioneer Darrell Julien last winter, who sang Tohme’s praises as the pair worked to put it all together.

“We had a certain period of time to empty Neverland last year,” Tohme said. “I was looking for a place for storage, a place to dump a lot of stuff like cars. I called Julien’s and asked if they could do it, come pick it up.” He says an auction could only go through with Jackson’s approval.

Last week, Darrell Julien told this column: “Michael has plenty of storage facilities. He wouldn’t have called me for storage.” True enough: Jackson at different times has had airport hangers at Santa Monica airport filled with his belongings. He’s also had warehouses closer to home near Neverland.

So what about Tohme Tohme, who’s not a doctor? There were a lot of questions I couldn’t ask him because he kept yelling, and refused to answer. I never got to ask him about a 1996 bankruptcy filing on record in the state of California. In the court filing, vs. Marathon National Bank, he listed himself as “Tohme Tohme, Doctor.”

A search of the Lexis Nexis database shows no mention of “Tohme Tohme,” doctor or otherwise, prior to December 22, 2008 when he issued a statement about Jackson’s health.

He was charming in our conversation. He said, “If you play it right, you will be the first one to know everything about Michael Jackson.” I said, thanks, I already was. He said that Michael is in great shape and could easily do 50 shows. “He could do a hundred.”
