Paris Jackson Possible Suicide Attempt Tipped in Tweets

22

Very upsetting news that Paris Jackson, the 15 year old daughter of Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe, may have attempted suicide. ET says Rowe confirmed for them that Paris is hospitalized after the attempt. (Rowe is very close with an ET producer.) She is most likely in West Hills Hospital near Calabasas, California.

But Paris, who seems like a gifted, verbal child, was sending out some odd Tweets on Twitter in the last few days about not sleeping and not being able to study.

Of course, she’s under pressure about making a new relationship with Rowe, and with the crazy trial going on in Los Angeles about her father’s death. None of that is easy. But this may have been catalyzed by something to do with a boy. She wrote on May 28th:

UPDATE: Katie Holmes Movie “Mania Days” Money Hedges its Funds

0

Exclusive: Since Katie Holmes was cast in “Mania Days,” a very minor movie, the production has gotten a lot of press. Now the p.r. geniuses behind “Mania Days” promoting the idea of a romance between Katie and the movie’s little known male star, Luke Kirby, in real life — whatever that is.

But I’ve told you the story about “Mania Days” quite a a while ago. It’s directed and written by Paul Dalio, the son of hedge fund king Ray Dalio. Ray Dalio owns Bridgewater Associates of Connecticut. He presides, presumably, over $80 billion or so of investments.

Since Paul Dalio has no actual credits, but has managed to attract Spike Lee as an executive producer and actors like Christine Lahti, Griffin Dunne and Bruce Davidson in secondary roles, the talk is that Ray Dalio is underwriting this project for his son.

Paul Dalio’s only other credits are making videos for the Maharishi University and the David Lynch Foundation. This isn’t a surprise since Ray Dalio is a big big financial backer of Lynch and of Transcendental Meditation, which is the whole purpose of Maharishi University in Fairfield, Iowa. Basically Katie has traded Scientology and auditing for TM and mantras.

Ray Dalio obviously has his own interest in celebrity and Hollywood. He has also been the major financial backer of Jennifer Lopez’s charitable foundation, formerly called Maribel. He gave the foundation $450,000 in 2009 and $75,000 in 2010 according to Federal Tax Filings.

How did Spike Lee get involved? You’ll notice in the press about the so called Katie-Luke Kirby romance the movie has been reduced to “a Spike Lee production.” It takes money to run Spike’s 40 Acres and a Mule. And frankly, though he’s a great director, Spike hasn’t had a financial hit of his own in a long, long time. Getting him to executive produce a movie financed by the biggest hedge fund creator in the U.S. (if not the world) couldn’t have been hard– there’s a big fee involved.

And what will “Mania Days” be like after all this money and press have been thrown around? No one knows for sure. But last week I spotted Paul Dalio (or his doppelganger) walking around in the West Village during the afternoon, far away from his film set. Maybe he was meditating.

Exclusive: Secret Screening of “The Butler” Draws Oscar Talk

0

Exclusive: Are you getting ready for the Oscars? Lee Daniels is. The director of “Precious” screened “The Butler” two nights ago in New York for family and friends–this was the final cut he told them. Among those in the audience: cast members Forest Whitaker, who saw his film for the first time, singer-actor Lenny Kravitz, and Cuba Gooding Jr. I am told that the screening at Technicolor editing was a huge success. Whitaker was “thrilled.” Actually “he was crying,” said a source.

Audience members cited Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo (who plays their son), and Gooding. I was also told that Alan Rickman and Jane Fonda as Ronald and Nancy Reagan are “iconic” and make indelible impressions. “The Butler” is released on August 12th, same day as “The Help,” with an eye toward multiple Oscar nominations. From the descriptions I got, this won’t be an issue.

“The Butler” is one of two big big big movies from The Weinstein Company this summer and fall pitched for the Oscars– the other is “August: Osage County” starring Meryl Streep. They have others but these are the two biggies we can expect to see along with things like Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine,” Joel Coen’s “Inside Llewyn Davis,” Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska,” maybe Martin Scorsese’s “Wolf  of Wall Street” and so on.

Sharon Jones: Get Well Wishes for Modern R&B Star

0

Just heard that Sharon Jones is taking time off because she has stage one bile duct cancer. Everybody, please send Sharon good vibes, prayers, and best wishes. She and her group the Dap Kings were “discovered” only a short time ago. Sharon is a spunky, fun, soulful bundle of energy, a real doll who worked and worked. She was just born in the wrong era, because if she’d been around in 1973, Sharon Jones would be in every Hall of Fame. The first time I heard her sing was at Harvey Weinstein’s wedding to Georgina Chapman (Harvey the former concert promoter has great ears). A couple of years ago Sharon and the DapKings sold out two nights over New Years at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square. I hope it takes a lot shorter than 100 days, 100 nights for Sharon to make a full recovery!

London: “WWZ” Divides Critics; Helen Mirren Queen Forever

1

From London: While Nikki Finke and Sharon Waxman battle it out in Hollywood Hedda vs. Louella style, the movie critics in London are divided over “World War Z.” The Daily Mail critic, who widely disliked and said to be out of touch in general, hated the movie. But I mean, he displayed anger in his short review that was unwarranted and just wrong. I don’t know what he wanted from a zombie movie. Tap dancing?

Indeed, “WWZ” so far has an 80% on Rottentomatoes. I do think audiences will love it. There’s a sequence set in Malta posing as Israel that is absolutely riveting. Director Marc Forster limited his use of CGI. There are 1,000 extras in that scene alone. There’s also a lot of smaller, intimate moments– especially establishing Brad Pitt as a family man who’s given up life with the CIA or UN or whatever.

There’s also a cleverness to the zombies. Forster and the writers give the zombies a kind of sympathy. I won’t explain anything more other than to say that when Pitt finally has to deal with the zombies one on one, the movie is no longer just explosions and killing. Maybe I can tell you more when we get closer to June 21st and the opening.

Meantime, Pitt, his family, Forster, and the cast went to Paris and then hit like a dozen countries before the US premiere on June 17th…

Also in London: I caught a performance tonight by Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Audience.” This is Peter Morgan’s play about how Queen Liz has had weekly meetings with 12 different prime ministers since she was coronated. Morgan wrote the movie “The Queen” for which Mirren won her Oscar. Stephen Frears directed the movie; Stephen Daldry directed the play.

Mirren is exceptional as the Queen, of course. The play will come to Broadway next spring for the Tony Awards. I am not sure how it will do– “The Audience” is very British. If the Broadway cast is American it won’t work. But the ticket buyers may not get a lot of the references. They must bring Richard McCabe as Harold Wilson. He’s a standout among the seven PMs depicted. Daldry, of course, can do no wrong as a director.

I was sorry to arrive just as Judi Dench closed in “Peter and Alice” after a sold out run. No word on whether it will come to New York. But Dame Judi is in the Oscar race this fall for Stephen Frears’ “Philomena.”

“Mad Men” Only Current Show in Writers Guild 10 Best of All Time

0

It’s quite a distinction. “Mad Men” is the only current TV series on the Writers Guild list of top 25 shows of all time. The only other recent series is “Breaking Bad.” The top show for all time, according to a poll of WGA writers, is “The Sopranos,” followed by “The Twilight Zone.” As the list widens out to its full 101 of all time, some other series like Downton Abbey and The Colbert Report are noted. You’ll see “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Seinfeld” up there as well. As much I love “The Sopranos,” I think I would have chosen “I Love Lucy” as the template for almost all TV. But that’s what these lists are about aren’t they, to get people talking? http://wga.org/content/default.aspx?id=4925

Angelina Jolie is Back on the Red Carpet, Better than Ever

0

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seemed closer than ever Sunday night in London at the premiere of “World War Z.” They had two of their six kids with them– Pax and Maddox. They had friends and family. And they’ve survived this latest harrowing human episode, Angelina’s double mastectomy, as well as the death of her aunt. I’ve spent time with them before during movie launches. But I have to say, they are a lovely, close knit team. There’s nothing fake about it. Weddings rings or not they are in it for good.

“I don’t know what I’d do without her,” Brad said at the “WWZ” after party. It was late and was a little emotional. “She keeps it all going.”

Angelina looked beautiful all night. But what really excited her was Brad’s success. When told “World War Z” was terrific fun, and that Pitt had done a good job, she lit up. “You don’t know how hard he worked on this,” she said. She literally glowed with good will for her partner and father of her children.

Unlike many movie stars, they are a pleasure to be around. At the after party, a reception in the Corinthia Hotel following the extraordinary Muse concert , Jolie and Pitt stayed to the very end. They talked to everyone, took pictures with strangers, and seemed geniunely interested in what was going on.

Brad sat down and talked with co-star Mirielle Enos (from TV’s “The Killing”), Angie chatted with young guys who were friends of friends. CAA agent Bryan Lourd and Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal came by to wish him well, and to support director Forster (he made “Quantum of Solace” for Pascal).

Pitt and Jolie reminded me of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, the other happy “Hollywood” couple. They’ve been through good times and bad, and now it’s all come together.

And I did love Angelina on that black carpet before the movie started. Fans were handing her gifts, asking about her health, holding up signs. She wasn’t just gracious but enthusiastic. It’s rare at her level. And she wasn’t doing it win points. Nice nice nice.

Review: $250 Mil “World War Z” with Brad Pitt-Despite Problems–Is A Hit

0

WITH UPDATES: What a relief: after all the crazy stories, Marc Forster’s World War Z is going to be a hit summer blockbuster. The movie premiered tonight in London at a big black carpet event in Leicester Square. Paramount brought me here and I was worried that this would be a difficult task.

Not at all. Brad Pitt easily pulls off the role of hero as the world is overcome by a virus that turns millions into zombies. Forster and Pitt play it straight, no laughs or inside jokes.

They build characters and tension so that the audience is really involved in the story. Don’t get me wrong. This isn’t The King’s Speech. WWZ is a popcorn movie on the level of Independence Day. But like that summer hit, Forster’s film never flags and is always entertaining.

MORE Paramount Pictures is launching “World War Z” around the world before a New York premiere on June 17th. On Sunday night they kicked off the festivities by producing a rock concert with the group Muse right after the big screening. Muse’s music is heard all through the movie.

The concert, with pyrotechnics, lasted about 45 minutes and was staged in the Royal Horseguard Parade, a place they say has never had am event put on by outsiders. It’s just where the royal family sometimes hosts events. About 15,000 people crowded into this unique setting. Muse rocked the crowd which was orderly but enthusiastic.

Among the guests: actress Jessica Chastain showed up unexpectedly with her extremely pleasant and hardworking Moncler executive boyfriend Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were also right there, along with director Forster the whole cast, various British actors and celebrities, too. There’s no question everyone was relieved the movie had gone over so well. Stories about strife on the set, massive reshoots of the last third film of the film, all of it falls away if the movie turns out alright. And “World War Z” has hit written all over it. So everyone was chummy.

Angelina worked the black carpet at the screening, signing dozens upon dozens of autographs, chatting with fans who’d waited to meet her– and it’s not her movie. She looked amazing as usual in a ful length black Yves St Laurent gown. A fan handed her a stuffed bear holding a heart at one end of the line. Way down at the other, Angelina gave it to a little girl who’d been waiting with her mother. She also took fans’ cameras and orchestrated photos.

“You’re just like a director,” a fan said.

“I am a director,” Jolie replied cheerily.

At the Muse concert, where everyone stood on a low platform facing the stage, I congratulated Brad on starting a possible franchise with “World War Z.” The door is definitely left open for parts 2 and 3. “We’re not really franchise people,” he said, holding Angelina’s hand. Well, they are now.

And who liked the movie most? Jolie and Pitt brought two of their three sons, Pax and Maddox. The kids brought friends and all they watched the movie together. And here’s a little scoop if you’ve read this far: Maddox got to play a child zombie. Even if you can’t spot him he’s there. “We have him in the dark,” Brad said. “Child zombies,” he said, rolling his eyes. That might not play so well.

More on “World War Z” in my next report…

Paris Jackson Debuts Make Up Video on You Tube (See Here)

3

If Hollywood superagent Rick Yorn had any doubts about representing Paris Jackson, a new video on YouTube should make him feel fine. Paris — or someone–posted this video on May 31st without any fanfare. But you can see this 15 year old girl is incredibly poised and personable as she shows how she puts on her eyeliner. If nothing else, she has a career as a spokesperson or infomercial queen. If she goes to J school, Paris could be Katie Couric.

And while Paris no doubt inherited some of her talent from her father, Michael Jackson, she is really an apple that has not fallen far from the tree of her mom, Debbie Rowe. Paris’s various guardians and parent are going to have their hands full with this one. Please, Paris, finish high school!

“World War Z” Readies London Premiere with Brad and Angelina

0

So here we are, surprise! Paramount Pictures has flown me to London so I can witness the international premiere of Marc Forster’s “World War Z” on Sunday night in Leicester Square. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be here along with “Extra” and “Access Hollywood” and “ET,” etc.

The movie doesn’t open for two more weeks, but Paramount is a little nervous. Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly and others have run stories about the movie’s rollercoaster ride to release. But last week Paramount did show the film in New York and Los Angeles to tastemakers and media people who weren’t in Cannes. They got a positive response.

I checked with a few of those guests before agreeing to come here. They assured me “WWZ” is no “After Earth,” that it’s very entertaining, and should do fine. After the screening tomorrow night there’s also a big concert by the group Muse. Their music is all over the film.

Here’s a little strange coincidence: the novel “World War Z” is written by Max Brooks, son of Mel Brooks and the late great Anne Bancroft. I don’t think it’s a funny book– although I could see Mel doing a parody of zombie movies a la “Young Frankenstein.” Good for Max. On Thursday next week, the American Film Institute’s annual gala guest of honor is…Mel Brooks. I will be there. It’s quite a week for the Brooks family, that’s for sure. Anne Bancroft was the most brilliant actress and loveliest of human beings. She must be grinning from ear to ear in heaven. We miss you, Anne!

PS in notes-– In the last day or so it was reported that famed jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller died of a stroke on Thursday at age 57. I am in shock. Miller flew in from a gig in Chicago two months ago and played at Aretha Franklin’s 71st birthday party in New York. He was a gentle giant, a great man, and an extraordinary musician. When we saw him at the end of March he looked fine. Life is short and there are no guarantees. Condolences to his family and friends…
